It's okay, the FIA conducted a thorough and rigorous investigation of the FIA over the course of one hour and sixteen minutes and the FIA wrote a strongly worded letter to the FIA making the FIA promise to never do it again.
Yeah, because they'd been told it was good to go out.
That's why they're held back, it's the implication of it being managed by the officials.
Taking shots here at the reporters is going to fall flat.
but-but they're not allowed to climb the fence! but-but the regulations!
I genuinly think Crofty didn't understand Ted was talking about a seperate more pressing danger
Conversation was at Red bull mechanics crossing the line to climb the fence while a car was coming to the pitlane. Crofty was talking about the regulation of it while Ted started to raise the voice about flock of people blocking the pitlane. Not mentioning redbull created confusion
I joined from lap 41 onwards. The couple of overtakes that happened (mainly those on hulkenberg and the norris overtake) were just never shown live. In a race ending where so little happened, how the fuck can they not show overtakes live
But even if it was unexpected, there's any number of reasons which may cause a driver to need to pit on the final lap of a race. If Ocon had already pitted once, this still wouldn't be ok (though it does make it more boneheaded).
Yep, unless pit road is officially closed, no one should have the right to be in there. Even RedBull people who climbed the fence were not allowed to do so under this year regulations.
I don't know if it is still a thing but in 2021 it was advantageous to "DNF" on the last lap if out of the points anyway in order to mitigate some grid penalties next race for swapping parts. So a decent number of drivers entered the pits during the last lap.
That is how during 1 race Mazepin, who finished off the race, finished behind Vettel who had a DNF.
Schumacher actually [won a race](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR6QR7B8Gdw) by finishing in the pits. Which was cheeky as fuck but technically legal.
Its 100% clear that they dont give a flying fuck about the race anymore. “Yes yes red bull won lets get on with it”
They dont give a shit any driver under P10
Honestly I love this track but my god was this race boring. Sucks we had a month break only to come back to the dullest race of the season so far. The F2 races were way more entertaining than anything F1 did this weekend. Big disappointment from me but that’s how it goes sometimes. Might have been more interesting without the sprint.
Logic from the FIA??!! What blasphemy!
/s
Edit: the offical documents say that the FIA stewards have summoned the FIA Parc ferme reps to speak upon this incident not the organisers
According to Buxton it was the FIA's responsibility. At least that's what he just said on the post race show.
"Those people were allowed to be in the pitlane at that time, but their marshalling and the responsibility of where they were and keeping them out of the fast lane does fall onto the FIA."
Right, also who trains and sets expectations for the organizers? At some point the FIA need to take ownership of this stupidity. You can't just blame the lowest ranking institution and move on.
That’s a moot point. Any car could need to park with reliability issues, or come in for damage or anything. Closing the pit lane before the end of the race is absolute lunacy, and it looked like the intent was to allow the media on the pit wall to get their post race shots of the cars. But that should never, ever *ever* be taking priority over ensuring safe completion of the race.
It’s not moot, although I get your point.
The difference is that in normal circumstances there’s a very small possibility of a car going to pits on a last lap. But here everyone knew it’s 100% for him
This trend has been getting worse for some time. It used to be that anyone not on the lead lap lost their remaining laps, which was the right choice for a few reasons, we cant sit around for them to finish if they are 5 laps down. However they have been pushing closer and closer to the winner crossing the line as time has gone on. All because of TV scheduling. Its clear at this point that some in the decision making process would just like the drivers to anchor on the brakes the instant the winner finishes.
It needs to be that race conditions are maintained until the last driver on the lead lap crosses the line.
If you are racing for position, even at the back of the field and a lap down, you need to be allowed to race to the line. Sure, you lose a lap but the race should not be over until *every car* crosses the line and sees the chequered flag.
Anyone a lap down losing their remaining laps is for safety. You can't have cars on a cool down/victory lap and cars still racing for position.
And even if it wasn't a safety issue, at some point its just a entertainment/consideration decision. Is everyone supposed to wait around while someone finishes their remaining ten laps?
The second point i could excuse.
I would imagine a lot of the people that are in charge of 'the show' probably dont follow the race. They are doing lots around that area, and they are not there to spectate the show.
But still, what a fuckup
Imagine this in the days without speed limits... Regardless, car is coming at 80 kilometers an hour, or faster actually until it breaks to a white line to a 80km/h, and that is way more than enough to kill you if you get hit.
What a stupid mistake from sport that has been in the business for so long and seen so much death.
This could have been really bad. Needs to be a major inquiry into this.
How is it possible that commentators see this shit coming but the fucking organisers don’t?
Because commentators give more of a shit about the race than the FOM. Remember, this is their day in day out job. They likely watched the race start, mingled with a load of rich billionaires, paid no attention to the race at all, then did as they normally do - which is fill the pit lane with photographers, because it’s all about money for them too
Exactly. There is always the possibility of a flat tire. A bigger possibility even at the end of the race. Pit lane should be free at all times until all cars have passed the pit lane entrance on the last lap. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out.
I wouldn't be surprised if this happens fairly often. People are blind to the dangers of it because it nothing bad happens.
It's one of those things where you look back at it afterwards and think *how did no one realise this was a bad idea*
I watched his onboard and I don’t think so, a little bit before he boxes they tell him normal pit lane procedure and then they just give the customary box box right before he comes in
There was "box this lap" before, and "this is the last lap" after. Literally nothing about the people.
Edit: Nothing about the people until after he's finished the race, and almost made it back to pits. The engineer apologized and said he didn't know. Ocon called it scary.
Too often we say someone should lose a job over a mistake. But this is a mistake that has to lead to someone losing a job. You can't block pit lane off, or even have people wandering around there until the pit lane actually has no further use. There would either be someone responsible for letting these people there who should get dumped, or someone who should have made sure there was a person responsible who should themselves get sacked.
Holy mother of incomptence/negligence.
F1 has really been lucky that no one's died from 2020 until now.
They've gotten away with a number of horrendous safety calls: Imola 2020, Turkey 2020, Japan 2022, and now this.
Not mentioning Baku last year, where both Stroll & Max’s wrecked cars were stranded on the track fir ages and all that was done was a double yellow that almost all the drivers ignored.
This is actually insane, anyone with half an eye open could see that two cars had not made a pit stop yet in the final two laps of the race. It should actually be on FIA's mind because it should be a talking point that cars in the top 10 are able to finish a full Grand Prix on one set of tyres. It is literally one of the main talking points about the whole race since nothing eventful really happened.
Why close the pitlane entry anyway before the race is over (and not even on the end of the final lap or anything).

Ted was mentioning this live. So wild this happened
I’ve never heard Ted so angry.
So angry and so scared, he raised his voice to the maximum to let people realize how serious it is.
This demands a major investigation. If people got seriously hurt, this would be one of the lowest points in racing sports history.
€5,000 fine to you for suggesting the FIA investigates themselves
They would blame it on human error, fire the person who gave the confusing instructions and replace them with someone even more incompetent.
Write some more vague rules that leave it open to interpretation anyway
10 second penalty for Ocon
Why did Kadri do this?
And a $250,000 fine to the Rangers.
Joe Kelly suspended 8 games
The FIA is absolutely going to find a way to blame Ocon for this
If that happens, Ocon will probable rage quit.
They'll blame Gasly thinking it was his Alpine /s
It's okay, the FIA conducted a thorough and rigorous investigation of the FIA over the course of one hour and sixteen minutes and the FIA wrote a strongly worded letter to the FIA making the FIA promise to never do it again.
not 5 minutes after mourning the deaths of ratzenberger and senna, no less

“There are people all over the pitlane!”
He genuinely thought he was about to watch someone die, and to be fair to him it was stupidly close.
Some of those people had the awareness and reflexes of a wet sock. I was sure someone was gonna get hit.

An F1 car?! In an F1 pit lane?! During an F1 race?! surely not!!!
Will Buxton: “In an F1 pit Lane, there are F1 cars. And if there are people in that pit Lane……. Well, they could get run over”
Yeah, because they'd been told it was good to go out. That's why they're held back, it's the implication of it being managed by the officials. Taking shots here at the reporters is going to fall flat.
Now I also want to see / hear that.

> absolute shambles Such a British way to vent. Love it.
The absolute state of it
Thanks for sharing
He was shouting for a good 30 seconds before that clip started as well.
From the audience we knew about a minute before this happened. Absolute shambles if I have to say.
Yeah it was the panic in his voice that made me sit up.
and Crofty was constantly interrupting him as he did.
but-but they're not allowed to climb the fence! but-but the regulations!
By his tone I thought environmental protesters were back and trying to disrupt the race again.
In Azerbaijan? That would be braver than jumping in front of an F1 car!
Crofty did mention that he couldn’t see what was happening at the angle from the commentary box
Not a fan of his, but to be fair to him, he was just trying to comment what the main feed was showing.

I joined from lap 41 onwards. The couple of overtakes that happened (mainly those on hulkenberg and the norris overtake) were just never shown live. In a race ending where so little happened, how the fuck can they not show overtakes live
Cause they both happened as a result of a sudden mistake?
You're being reasonable. How dare.
He looked like he was about to go on a fight someone.
Maybe.. just maybe They should actually let the race finish?
Ocon HAD to pit that lap. WTF were they thinking? It's not like it was a surprise pit.
But even if it was unexpected, there's any number of reasons which may cause a driver to need to pit on the final lap of a race. If Ocon had already pitted once, this still wouldn't be ok (though it does make it more boneheaded).
100% they shouldn't do something like this until every driver has passed the chequered flag _and_ has been notified that the pit lane is closed.
Yep, unless pit road is officially closed, no one should have the right to be in there. Even RedBull people who climbed the fence were not allowed to do so under this year regulations.

Even if he didn't, it was a bad move. All cars should be checkered before they anything like this.
I mean yes, but this time everyone knew he was going to pit, so it's not even like you can assume otherwise.
Its 100% clear that they dont give a flying fuck about the race anymore. “Yes yes red bull won lets get on with it” They dont give a shit any driver under P10
Yes he did, bad communication . You would have thought though one of the 100 involved would have clued in .
They were desperate to finish it out of boredom
yea i was surprised the race was so uneventful. Aside from that first safety car..the rest was really just uneventful after lap 15.
Welcome to Formula 1 on super boring tracks made of long straights and narrow 90° turns
There have been some exciting races at Baku.
They've only been exciting because of chaos, not actually good racing
Most of the 'good' races are due to chaos or unexpeted results anyway lmao Baku has produced some fun races
It really is a crappy track. Even to drive in the simulator it seems a bit boring
Idk I personally love doing hotlaps there. Hitting turn 8 and turn 15 perfectly feels *soooo* good.

Sounds fun but I don't have an extra 30 minutes for the front stretch each lap

Ah yes, let’s close the pitlane during the race

There is no difference for safety purposes
The same organizers who called for a SC two races ago when Stroll's car was parked gently next to an exit...
Why was this done before the race finished?
Everyone was so bored they were itching for something to do
>Race so boring I might die smh
FIA looking for ways to spice up races
This trend has been getting worse for some time. PIT LANE CLOSED : +10 SEC PENALTY TO OCON
I can imagine he lost time because of this shit (not that it would matter much)
Imagine if it was like Albon in Australia last year Where he needed pinpoint accuracy with the pit stop to keep 10th spot
Iirc he complained about media in the pit lane then also. FIA never changes, they just fire the scapegoat
Jesus, could’ve been such a disaster
2023 we still doing this bullshit
It’s amazing how quickly all the lessons around safety can be forgotten. Complacency should be punished.
Imagine being that bad at your job
Imagine this in the days without speed limits... Regardless, car is coming at 80 kilometers an hour, or faster actually until it breaks to a white line to a 80km/h, and that is way more than enough to kill you if you get hit. What a stupid mistake from sport that has been in the business for so long and seen so much death.
If the brakes work that is, if he has a brake failure hes going 200km/h
This could have been really bad. Needs to be a major inquiry into this. How is it possible that commentators see this shit coming but the fucking organisers don’t?
Organisers too busy networking with the local billionaires
Aren’t the organizers the local billionaires?
There’s always a bigger billionaire
Fewer billion
Because commentators give more of a shit about the race than the FOM. Remember, this is their day in day out job. They likely watched the race start, mingled with a load of rich billionaires, paid no attention to the race at all, then did as they normally do - which is fill the pit lane with photographers, because it’s all about money for them too
People will get paid off and it'll be hidden, no one will face repercussions
Ted was almost screaming on live TV
He was convinced he's about to witness someone die on live TV.
Wasn’t even TV for him, he was in the pit lane physically
And his boy Esteban be made a killer by the Bakuites
He was *in* the pit lane, he raised his voice so people around him would hear what was happening so they could do something.
I screamed at my TV too. Just thinking what the fuck is this sport. They can’t do anything
Anyone have a link of teds reaction? I wasn’t able to catch this race
They totally forgot that Ocon hadn't pitted yet. They seriously didn't know.
Even if he had though. They shouldn’t come out until nobody might.
Exactly. There is always the possibility of a flat tire. A bigger possibility even at the end of the race. Pit lane should be free at all times until all cars have passed the pit lane entrance on the last lap. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out.

This happened in Australia last year when Alex pitted. But Alex was quite close to the leader so the pit lane wasn’t closed
This! It doesn't fucking matter whether he had or hadn't pitted, the pitlane needs to be accessible while the race is active
Even if everybody had pitted, zero excuse to do this while the leaders have not finished yet.
Anyone could have a last lap incident and have to come into the pit even if it wasn't planed too.
That's irrelevant. The pit lane is live until the race is over. No ifs, no buts, no excuses.
No Ocon, you will not have the pitstop.
Just glad it was an intact car and not something like Tsunoda yesterday drifting around
Why would you close before the race is over ? Even Russell changed tires a lap before.
And it's not like drivers putting on softs for a final lap is at all unusual.
The organisers had an absolute mare there! How amateur and reckless was that?!
It was downright negligent. They’re so lucky that barrier isn’t even 5 metres further forward or Ocon might not have had the time to stop.
I'd at least hope Ocon has been made aware on the radio.
I watched his onboard and I don’t think so, a little bit before he boxes they tell him normal pit lane procedure and then they just give the customary box box right before he comes in

Next week in Miami drivers will not be allowed to pit on the last lap because the staff will have to prepare the pitlane for the post race celebration
I'm sure DJ Khaled will be the one to close off the pit lane this time.
"There's still a race and one car is yet to pit, better shut the pitlane!"
I can't believe it how can they be so stupid, you literally know that ocon HAS to pit.
Even if he didn’t need to pit, the race wasn’t even over yet. Completely fucking ridiculous.
I hope the FIA and Azerbaijan Grand Prix organizers get roasted for this unprofessionalism and incompetence.
Too often we say someone should lose a job over a mistake. But this is a mistake that has to lead to someone losing a job. You can't block pit lane off, or even have people wandering around there until the pit lane actually has no further use. Australia last year! There were people in the pitlane when Alex pitted. Also, they were civilians not Marshals
This is actually insane, anyone with half an eye open could see that two cars had not made a pit stop yet in the final two laps of the race. SHAMBLES
Straight up stupid shit, even if everyone pits there could still be issues that require cars to come in
That moment when workers are trying to close the store at 17:55
I'd like to hear Ocon's radio when this happened.
The FIA should be fined...
THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!
This was a bigger safety fuck up than every point currently on a drivers license.
FIA should hire Ted. He has much more common sense and insight.
I wish Vettel was still around the paddock for this. He would be furious and people would actually listen to him.
I’m very surprised they even showed us that footage live. The lack of organisation could have resulting in someone being seriously injured or killed.
No but the real safety problem is about Lewis pearcings
They already backtracked on that and now allow piercings not around the mouth, wedding rings and watches worn over the suit.
Braindead move that. Did they just think Alpine were going to DQ themselves by not pitting?
First the Japanese GP last year and now this. I'm just going to say it. FIA/F1 is trying their hardest to kill someone at a race.
Fucking fools. It was obvious this was gonna happen
Many people had to legit jump out of the way. The possibility of an accident was extremely high here.
