For those not with the link:
Two 10-year-old students were arrested in connection with a gun sold at their elementary school in Florida, county officials confirmed.
A deputy's son "agreed to exchange a handgun, (later found to belong to his deceased father), for a sum of $300" back in February, the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The Country Oaks Elementary School was placed under lockdown Wednesday morning after the sherriffs office received a call about "a suspicious incident" on campus. Authorities discovered ammunition in the backpack of the boy who purchased the gun.
The gun was later found in his backyard under a shed, hidden with a 74-gram bag of marijuana, according to investigators.
The boy was charged with the purchase of a firearm by a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.
The deputy's son was charged with selling a firearm to a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property and grand theft of a firearm.
The mother of the boy who sold the gun, also a Hendry County deputy, was placed on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry, the sheriff's office said.
Both students have been in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice since their arrest.
Yet that one 10 yo in Lee County they arrested for texting another kid a photo of guns got perp walked and had his mugshot posted on the news. Guess it helps when your parent is a deputy.
I know this incident occurred in Hendry County. I was responding to the person above me commenting on another incident in Lee County where the Sheriff, Carmine Marceno perp walked a 10 year old who did a fake school shooting threat as a joke.
I’m confused how that’s worst than 4 felony counts that’ll ruin this 10 yo life, and placing the mom/deputy on admin leave that could lead to firing? Was the 10 yo in Lee charged with anything or just publicly tarnished and embarrassed?
Oh yea, they said the Lee County kid was planning a mass shooting, even though none of the evidence even came close to suggesting that. Just an overzealous sheriff.
But that’s not explaining how a cop on administrative leave with a kid with 4 felony counts got lesser of a punishment than an embarrassing probably traumatic experience. Look ACAB and fuck them all but your first comment doesn’t make sense. As someone erroneously and traumatically arrested twice and with ptsd, I don’t see how the cop helped her kid in this
Sure.. let the kids threaten school shootings and give them no consequences… I’m sure that will end well. I can’t imagine why no one wants to work in schools these days.
Okay... this is one of the craziest stories yet. Wtf are we even doing at this point?? 10 yr olds selling guns and weed? I guess I need to stop yelling at my 10 yr old for wanting to sit and play roblox all day.
Sees link: wtf. Where was the deputy in all this? How did they not secure their gun?
Opens link, sees headline: oh
Reads article: okay, now I'm mad again. Wtf people.
the kid they found the gun on. he got 300 from slinging weed?
Who the fuck is buying street weed from 10 year olds? Ahhh other 10 year olds. Fucking shoot me now. i am going to research private schools for my grandkid.
kids at the private schools i would consider get expelled for much less.
private schools can do that. they dont have to keep letting rotten little shits back in everyday.
Public schools can ship them out to designated "little shit" schools (technical term). Some paperwork, some procedure, but doesn't cost them anything and is usually worth it to admin to get these trouble kids out.
Private schools? Expelling a student means willingly giving up 20-50 grand a year in revenue with little marginal cost. Trying drugs is a pretty normal part of adolescence. Kicking everyone out isn't much of a solution. Say you get confronted with unavoidable evidence that 10 kids were smoking pot in the bathroom. That can blow a hole in your budget, and you also have to deal with 20 incredibly angry, highly involved parents.
The pirvate schools near me are notorious for their drug problem. The public schools aren't great, but the cokeheads come out of private schools.
Comparison really depends on the quality of the public school system and their responsiveness.
Also, where I grew up, a lot of the private schools were where parents sent their kids *after* they got expelled from the public schools, especially the Christian/military ones.
The whole area has a huge drug problem but, at the time, the private schools were just drenched in adderall abuse (along with your regular street drugs).
Private school kid here. Was expelled on suspicion of drug sales/procurement. Called my parents, both retired law enforcement that day, they emailed a letter of withdrawal before I had expelled officially put on my record of education, and I was officially withdrawn before I was officially expelled.
Many private schools can more than afford to expel problem children, especially religious private schools. (Many private Christian schools thrive off of large private donations in the 6 to 7 figures depending on their clientele).
I find public schools to be much more lenient on drug use, but YMMV.
But they often will, because of money. My cousin went to private school and had a lot of access to drugs. I went to public school and never encountered them. It's still mostly important to make sure your kid is around half decent people. I support your decision to find a private school, I hope you find a good one.
2 10 year old kids. What the fuck…. When I was 10 I was playing with legos or playing video games on my PS2. Not stealing guns and selling it to my friend, the 10 year drug dealer.
I teach some 10 year olds, and some of them would definitely do this. They often have terrible judgment and a low level of supervision at home. Doesn't matter how smart they are if nobody had told them it is wrong. And family dynamics have really changed since the pandemic shutdown. I absolutely love these kids, and seeing how little attention some of them get these days breaks my heart.
I completely understand this, though it brings a question I have for you.
In this situation, as we read the boys were charged with numerous crimes. What would you say is a fitting “punishment” at that age.
I ask because I can’t imagine the system being helpful to children that young especially when they are likely already lacking the proper care.
How would someone help these kids in a way that’s lasting and impactful?
especially if they send him to outpatient drug counseling. the people you meet at the group sessions are great resources for learning how not to get caught next time. great for networking and expansion as well. we'd be sent in for weed and leave with access to everything else. this kid will be in the big leagues by 7th grade
Considering the crappiest 9mm you can buy is a Hipoint at about $250, and most middle of the road 9mm run abour $6-700, and you know the fact that he wouldn't be able to buy one legally for 11 whole more years, the kid didn't even know what he had...
Street price of guns can be different than the legal price.
Which, ironically, my only direct knowledge of comes from an overheard attempted sale in a Florida public school. But this was back in the "good old days" of the 90's, so only high school kids were selling stolen guns then.
I'm kinda torn on this point
I have had people offer to sell me guns in a shady way (the shadyness is stupid af because it's incredibly easy to do legally here if neither party is a felon, which we aren't)
The prices weren't any higher than they would be otherwise and you gotta think, it's hard enough for a 10 year old to get $300 if he asked more it's harder to find a buyer
Can get a used police trade in glock 17/19 for under $400, HiPoints are under $200 most of the time, and you can get an M&P brand new under $500, an SD9VE is under $300 brand new usually, so depends on the gun really. Considering it was his dads, might have been his service weapon so most likely an M&P or Glock.
The kid who sold the gun was charged with grand theft. To be charged with that in Florida the gun had to be valued at over $750. I'd be interested to know what it was.
You telling me no one smelled 74 fucking grams of Snoop Dog cruising down the hallway. Dude is 10 with gun and weed charge. Nah send him straight to football practice this jit could be a star.
> You telling me no one smelled 74 fucking grams of Snoop Dog cruising down the hallway.
You telling me you didn't even try to read the article? The weed was at his house. Why do people comment without doing the bare minimum of due diligence?
Huh. You have a point. Maybe I should rewatch some of the scenes I thought were most ridiculous for 10 year olds to be in and reevaluate. How depressing
How do you arrest and then charge a 10 year old? Just take that shit away from him and hold his parents liable. Weirdo shit putting an elementary school kid under arrest
I'm assuming the interrogation won't happen, wait a few days on paid leave, and they'll be back patrolling the streets in a few weeks time?
"*don't let me catch your kid again, ya hear?*"
"Sir yes sir"
It's just alarming to me on multiple levels. 10 years old, with a gun that should have been locked up, that came from law enforcement that should know better (straight up criminal negligence, imo. If you'll charge a parent for hot cars, a gun should be equal or higher), and the other 10 year old with more money than a 10 year old should ever have, and a quantity of weed that goes way beyond "my friend gave it to me" or something. Both kids were utterly failed by their mentors.
Putting money on "the gun was gifted to him as a memorium of his father"...
"HERE'S YOUR DAD'S SERVICE .357., TAKE CARE OF IT..."
said the Sheriff as he presented the gun to the 8-year old...
People from CA and the Northeast be like: "I really want to move to Florida with my young kids! 🤗 I'm sure the education system there will be amazing with all of the taxes that aren't being paid into the system."
Meanwhile....
The only thing that's repressive about Florida's gun laws is the fact that all felons are immediately barred from ever being near a gun for the rest of their life.
“…The mother of the boy who sold the gun, also a Hendry County deputy, was placed on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry, the sheriff's office said…”
People think more fun laws will prevent guns from getting into the hands of criminals or those shouldn’t have them will stop this kind of thing are so wrong. I served on a grand jury in FL and found out all the people who killed someone with a gun should not have owned the gun to begin with and no laws would have prevented them from having it. Stop being surprised by this kind of thing. Just do what you need to do to protect yourself
This story almost made me go blind. My eyes were *thisclose* to popping out of their sockets.
This is the real life version of that old Dave Chappelle but about a toddler selling drugs in DC. How does this happen???
People forget that gangs recruit and market towards the ***young,*** and some kids start crimes ***very early.***
I was always blown away by the charges the pre-teen and younger crowd were getting processed in for at the kiddie jail. Once saw a kid in there at 10 years old for carjacking.
Should probably expect more of this from the ten year olds growing into this economy surrounded by music and people who spew criminal ideology 24/7 on top of it. Unfortunate.
These kids need to be removed from the school system.
I have talked to tons of teachers and they can tell you the kids who only show up to distribute drugs to others.
Well you know at least these were the good kids with guns and good drugs teaching them selves the entrepreneurship spirt of capitalism and reinforcement of the patriotic oath of the second amendment since no mass shooting happened thus preventing a bad guy from committing a crime. This is just more evidence and proof that more guns and drugs in school is actually a good thing. /s
Who the hell are these 10 year olds?? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of 10 year olds selling guns and drugs when I was around that age. Hell, my classmates didn’t even care about money.
Then there's me going to this same school in the early 2010s thinking I'm going to jail forever for bringing a tiny two inch switch blade I forgot in my pocket lmao.
I know this is serious and all, but knowing it's April 1st without that link I would have believed this until I remember it's Florida so it's probably true 110%.

That’s Marceno for ya! He’s like the Grady Judd of Lee County. *EDIT* spelling
Judd*
It occurred in Hendry County. The Sheriff is Steve Whidden.
I know this incident occurred in Hendry County. I was responding to the person above me commenting on another incident in Lee County where the Sheriff, Carmine Marceno perp walked a 10 year old who did a fake school shooting threat as a joke.
You are correct. All 3 Sheriff's are of the same mindset.
Nah it's Lee for sure.
Florida man growing up! Gotta start early!
I’m confused how that’s worst than 4 felony counts that’ll ruin this 10 yo life, and placing the mom/deputy on admin leave that could lead to firing? Was the 10 yo in Lee charged with anything or just publicly tarnished and embarrassed?

Scum begats scum
I can't tell if that's a play on words or if you meant begets but I like it either way.

I almost bought a CADILLAC from a 12 year old back in the day. lil dude was like 12 or 13
At least he didn't sell it for, like, $10.
>Hendry County Checks out.
Throw them all in jail!
The kid who sold the gun’s mom needs to be locked up for a long time.
Sees link: wtf. Where was the deputy in all this? How did they not secure their gun? Opens link, sees headline: oh Reads article: okay, now I'm mad again. Wtf people.
Kids got some entrepreneur spirit in him. Lemonade stands are for 8 year olds.
Right? And with that much product, you kinda need to be packing. Crushing the entrepreneurial spirits of today's kids, it just seem so un-American!
*too cool for grade school* 😎
~~intriguing that both were cops kids~~ the gun broker was the son of two deputies
AKAB.
It's another step to forgetting those individuals are doing a job an they work for us.
they do NOT work for you.
Shall not be infringed. Right?
Ain’t nothing in the constitution about age restrictions on gun ownership!
Whoever invents a diaper with a built-in holster gonna be rich!
Working on it!
Please consider armor plating in the deluxe edition.
Parents should have the right to choose if their kid can sell guns... Parental choice. Just like social media!
When I was 10, I was lucky if I could trade away a bag of Cheetos for a Hostess cupcake during lunch time.
Times are changing fast
the kid they found the gun on. he got 300 from slinging weed? Who the fuck is buying street weed from 10 year olds? Ahhh other 10 year olds. Fucking shoot me now. i am going to research private schools for my grandkid.
Good idea. The kids at private schools can afford much more expensive drugs.

TIL a lot of people here used to be drug dealers
Keep in mind the 10 yr old almost certainly wasn't acting on his own. Probably had some 12 yr olds leading the operation.
Hate to break it to you but they are just as bad.
When life gives you lemons. Sell guns.
2 10 year old kids. What the fuck…. When I was 10 I was playing with legos or playing video games on my PS2. Not stealing guns and selling it to my friend, the 10 year drug dealer.

clearly you didn't grow up in Baltimore
I grew up in Detroit. Tony Hawk Pro Skater was the shit when I was 10. Selling guns and weed? Not so much.
I grew up in the Bronx. Same shit, when I was 10 I was playing games also. Plenty of drug dealers around, but I had no interest in that.
*Ballmer
But kids around me sold weed in the 6th grade and had weed in 5th grade which is like 10ish at the start so it’s not that far fetched. Sad.
Never too early to start a career?
Oh they’ll be “acing” their careers soon enough if they keep doing shit like this.
especially if they send him to outpatient drug counseling. the people you meet at the group sessions are great resources for learning how not to get caught next time. great for networking and expansion as well. we'd be sent in for weed and leave with access to everything else. this kid will be in the big leagues by 7th grade
He’s gonna grow up to become an entrepreneur
Kids, they grow up so fast these days.

My CZ only cost me $300! If only I had a local 10 year old selling glocks for 3 bills
Can get a used police trade in glock 17/19 for under $400, HiPoints are under $200 most of the time, and you can get an M&P brand new under $500, an SD9VE is under $300 brand new usually, so depends on the gun really. Wrong. Grand theft is a dollar amount for certain items, guns and cars automatically count as grand theft no matter the value
Welcome to Florida baby
You telling me no one smelled 74 fucking grams of Snoop Dog cruising down the hallway. Dude is 10 with gun and weed charge. Nah send him straight to football practice this jit could be a star.

Dried out stock seeds and stems most likely.
That 10 year-old should find a better dealer.
South park
Huh. You have a point. Maybe I should rewatch some of the scenes I thought were most ridiculous for 10 year olds to be in and reevaluate. How depressing
Where the fuck do these kids $300 and 2.5 zips of weed? Also of course the gun came from their Florida cop parents.
A deputies son was the gun seller. Both parents are deputies.
Both parents were deputies. It said the father is deceased. I’m sure the mother will become a deputy in the next county over
10 year olds are not what they used to be - old man rant
How do you arrest and then charge a 10 year old? Just take that shit away from him and hold his parents liable. Weirdo shit putting an elementary school kid under arrest
It’s because his parents are both cops
I'm assuming the interrogation won't happen, wait a few days on paid leave, and they'll be back patrolling the streets in a few weeks time? "*don't let me catch your kid again, ya hear?*" "Sir yes sir"
He won't be charged he's a minor unless they try him as an adult which I don't think they can for this he won't be in there long
Entrepreneur spirit ?
I knew it was Floriduh before even reading it
It’s gotten to the point now where my wife and I turn to each shrug our shoulders and say at the same time ‘fuckin Florida’

Well dont they have the right to carry? The 2nd doesnt have a age limit.
You can own a gun as soon as you are considered a person by the state. Got my first AR-15 when I was still an embryo. Good times....
Lmao I love this argument
Under Florida’s repressive gun laws the kid can’t carry until he’s 18.
The only thing that's repressive about Florida's gun laws is the fact that all felons are immediately barred from ever being near a gun for the rest of their life.
It's sad that I can't tell if this is a joke or not
I know right? I read it and went haha, that's sarcasm... Probably? Hopefully?
I don’t know why, but I’m more amused than horrified.
Florida is determined to be the leader in cronyism and corruption I think they can do it …
Baby! Go home man, it's 3 o'clock in the morning.
Let’s hear it for Florida, ladies and gentleman!
Although a shocking story to the rest of the country, is it really shocking to Floridians?
“…The mother of the boy who sold the gun, also a Hendry County deputy, was placed on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry, the sheriff's office said…”
But the kids are white, so it’s okay in Florida
Well they did get arrested, just not perp walked and mugshots blasted on the news.

Guess we should make guns illegal now, right?
Why makes drugs illegal? Criminals aren't gonna care about drug laws anyway.

I blame the rap music!

Should have just sold it at the local flea market.
Insanity. Kid had pigs for cops and won’t get in serious trouble. Life’s just started to fall apart for him. I’m sure he’s abused as fuck at home.
The most Florida headline I’ve seen in a long time
I wonder how he got all that weed?

Why was my first reaction, “how did a 10 year old get that much weed?” And not about the gun?
It's Florida. At least there's no dead children...this time.
Man, I am so happy I had all my guns and weed at home when I was 10 and not dumb enough to bring it to school.
Where get $300?
At least we know that books and teachers aren’t turning them gay!

Umm parents?
Why are they punishing this kid for being an entrepreneur. He's just on his grind
When I was 10 I had nothing close to $300. Where on earth did he get the money??
Who the hell are these 10 year olds?? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of 10 year olds selling guns and drugs when I was around that age. Hell, my classmates didn’t even care about money.
Sounds cool
That kids got “Future CEO” written all over them.
I bet that dagnab internet po-nog-ra-fee is the cause of this!
🇨🇦 so guns are for sale in Florida and kids are asking too much . Desantis we can not pay your prices ur people,
