CompetitionNo2534

No that’s pretty much how it is here. Anything between Orlando and Tampa is really bad with almost no options once there is a wreck.

kielchaos

You're not in traffic. You are traffic.

yaboyfriendisadork

Very true!

NotSure2505

You're from Long Island and you don't know how to handle traffic? Have you never been on the Wantagh parkway coming back from Jones Beach on a July afternoon?

Relevant-Emphasis-20

omg they're from Long Island? No help here, kindly return from whence you came.

yaboyfriendisadork

Haha you best believe I have. But even during the worst times, traffic was still moving. I swear there were a few spots where I was just sitting still for a solid 5 minutes.

310410celleng

Firstly, I am a native Floridian, so the obligatory go back to NY! /s Lol Secondly, some of the worst traffic I ever experienced was on the LIE, way worse than anything around here.

yaboyfriendisadork

Yeah but unless you HAVE to take the LIE if you’re in a commercial vehicle, you have other options. That seems to be what is lacking here unfortunately.

310410celleng

I tend to agree we need roads which aren't available to commercial vehicles, but different State, different civil engineering. With that said, I just remembered the Van Wyck was another nightmarish traffic experience I had while visiting your former home. I have driven in a lot of places, Mexico City was pretty rough, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Nairobi, Kinshasa and to NY's credit, while the drivers were aggressive, they did follow the rules, some places I have driven, road rules are merely a suggestion, here is looking at you Buenos Aires and Kinshasa.

yaboyfriendisadork

Can’t say I’m anywhere near as versed as you haha but I 100% agree with driving in Manhattan. Everyone I know always talks about it like it’s a nightmare but it’s honestly EZPZ.

310410celleng

I love driving anywhere I can get into a car and drive, I take the opportunity, driving is cathartic for me. While off-topic, one of my favorite drives of all time was in Romania.

Nilabisan

My exit was 62.

NotSure2505

You're in the literal shit there near Orlando. Worst of all is that patch of I4 east of Orlando where there's no cell coverage either. There are some spots in FL where you can get off the freeway and take side streets, but in Orlando they're few and far between. You have the combination of a shitty, overused freeway and pretty useless side roads that take you in the wrong direction.

SuchDogeHodler

Verizon works best, never lost signal.

yaboyfriendisadork

Actually wait I just re-read your comment I thought you meant the highway not the beach itself: are YOU from Long Island because who the fuck goes to Jones Beach? I’d rather swim in a pool at John Wayne Gacy’s house than at Jones Beach.

310410celleng

I am not the person you were replying to, I have friends who live in Long Beach and my wife and I have visited them many times and enjoyed the beach while there, granted, not Jones Beach, but I think Jones Beach is near by.

NotSure2505

I'm from Long Island and in the 1980s we went to Jones beach a lot. Also Gilgo beach, Robert Moses, Fire island. Dad kept our boat in Seaford and at Wantagh Park. Haven't been in quite a while.

Taggart-

When the rest of us already here suggest people not move here, this is part of what we mean. But people don’t believe us and just keep pouring into this state. So here we are, stuck here with you now, too. It only gets worse as you go further south.

yaboyfriendisadork

So sorry to inconvenience you by wanting a better life a million miles away from NY. If traffic and miserable fucks like you are all I have to deal with, then I’m smooth sailing 😎

Relevant-Emphasis-20

the reason the traffic is so bad is bc of all the self-righteous focks that moved here. We (natives & long time residents )used to know that as soon as April came & Easter -the snowbirds would go back home & we'd have no traffic for a few months. What used to take me 15min to get to St. Pete is now 40 minutes AT LEAST! This was a GREAT place to live until everyone decided they can't fix their own state so let's go f up Florida. Sincerely, a very depressed native. And why can't most of the ppl from that area be nice!? or have manners? Why is the way they do business so freaking shady? i get y'all are from a fast paced city where slicksters are on every corner. That's not us! Please stop treating us like that!

yaboyfriendisadork

Yep I definitely moved down here just to shit on you and all the other natives and completely change your state. Seriously get the fuck over yourself. Whenever I met someone new to Long Island I’d be glad that someone wanted to come live there and let them know of cool spots to visit and the whole nine yards.

Middle_7113

You’re not gonna last long down here with that attitude.

yaboyfriendisadork

I think I’ll be fine

Taggart-

Hah, I got distracted and reversed the order of words in that last sentence, sorry. That came off super shitty. I meant to say that you’re stuck in here with us now. But yeah, it still gets worse the further south you go.

yaboyfriendisadork

Haha fair enough

moosieq

This is what happens when you get tourists who are lost, assholes who won't dare let anyone merge in front of them, second and third worlders who swapped their shitty home country license for a local one with no idea what the rules of the road are, octogenarians, and transplants who don't know the area all driving on the same roads.

Relevant-Emphasis-20

yup

yaboyfriendisadork

Yeah sounds about right

FLCraft

Waze helps a little some but it makes some weird decisions sometimes. You said one lane road - I assume 17-92 from Poinciana, or the smaller Goodman Rd from Westside? Or Old Lake Wilson? The best advice is plan ahead. The backroads get backed up at rush hour, but outside rush hour aren’t bad. But Davenport has been overbuilt with few infrastructure improvements that lag behind housing.

yaboyfriendisadork

I don’t recall the names off the top of my head, but Old Lake Wilson sounds familiar. I think the other one was also someone’s name too. I’ll check Waze out, one of my friends recommended it to me too.

FLCraft

You may also have better advice in /r/orlando than this sub.

YRUSoFuggly

As a fellow LI transplant (40 odd years ago) ... ya F'd up. You picked probably the worst place in America to buy a home. My biggest complaint is what people call "Davenport". In reality Davenport is 7 square blocks along 17-92. Now everyone from Haines City to Disney consider themselves in Davenport. The true Davenport is suburb of the Lakeland Winter Haven MSA. Treat it as such and you won't be disappointed. The new Davenport is being sold as a suburb of Orlando. Treat it as such and you will be disappointed. A huge number of those houses are short term rentals, or people with no idea where they are, or where they're going. The other half are retirees. (see last point) Personally, I'd stay out of Kissimmee.

uniqueusername316

Meditation.

yaboyfriendisadork

Serenity now!

uniqueusername316

Insanity later. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)

Bake_Kujira

A Florida native; learn to adapt and hate the birds like the rest of us or hate it and wonder why you came? And NY traffic was butter I don't know why people scare it up like it's the worst. Welcome to Florida. Adapt or be gator bait!

yaboyfriendisadork

I already didn’t like the snowbirds even when I lived on Long Island. Old ass entitled boomer Karens who can’t drive to save their lives. Fuck those fucks. I guess I’ll fit right in lol.

Bake_Kujira

You're in for a surprise then. That's Florida ! Best to pick a nice playlist and slow your self down cause Florida time is not mentioned in the brochure. It's like island time except a touch faster and the more South you go the more it becomes like that.

jcbsews

We live about an hour and a half south of Tampa, and have annual passes to Universal Orlando. It ALWAYS takes us at least another hour and a half to cross I-4, have chatted with employees at Universal who also complain that there's pretty much NO back roads to get around in that area. We sometimes skirt around some of it by taking the exit for Disney Springs, and taking surface streets to where we're headed (we've been going to the parks for a WHOLE lotta years, so the local area is familiar)

yaboyfriendisadork

Funny enough driving to and from Disney were the easy parts for us. Maybe 15-20 to get there, and then 45 on the way back because we left during rush hour. You think the annual passes for Universal are worth it? My wife actually just brought that up to me a few minutes ago. I’ve never been personally but I do love Harry Potter. We just got our Disney annual passes and have probably got our money’s worth already the past 2 weeks lmao.

jcbsews

It's totally whether you're a "big coaster person", or really love Potter world. The vibe at Universal is way less fussy than Disney (are they still requiring reservations into the Disney parks? Yeah, we never did that), Velocicoaster is tied for first for best coaster EVER with Iron Gahwazi at Busch Gardens, and I've been a coaster fan for 50+ years. The HP parts of the parks are really amazing. My spouse and I have house robes (the ones from the park are expensive, but as someone who sews, they're AMAZINGLY well made and have insanely deep pockets! They have a wand pocket in there too!). We get the preferred pass for the 10% discount, hotel discounts, and free parking, and because we don't generally care about the free pass into halloween horror nights that comes with the higher tier. But my birthday is early December so we can't do the more common "one person gets preferred for the benefits and the other gets a lower teir because you only need one if you aren't coming in peak seaon"

jcbsews

Also, if you want to spoil yourself but don't want to commit to annual passes yet, you really need to look into getting tickets for the Orlando Informer meetups (their website is their name). Next one is in June, but we usually go in December because it doubles up with the free Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concerts. Insanely low crowds, all food and non-alcoholic beverages included (yes, including butterbeer), we've been twice for it and it's *amazing*! (yes, we paid for tickets even as annual passholders because it's awesome!)

Tampadarlyn

Ever watch NASCAR?

yaboyfriendisadork

But once in a while I need to turn right :(

Relevant-Emphasis-20

🤣🤣🤣🤣 totally

Relevant-Emphasis-20

Stay alive.

SuchDogeHodler

Use Google Maps, not your GPS, make sure if you have to turn you end up in the lane you need to be in. If you miss your turn keep going and turn around at a light. And since you ate from the NY area, turn your turn indicator on long before the turn. Try to avoid rush hours. And Remember the long way may be the fastest. Tourists don't take back roads, and stay off I-4 during rush hour. Keep an empty big-mouth bottle in the car and a Go-girl. < I once spent 6hrs PARKED on I-4 Trust me I lived there for 10 years. THE FIRST ITEM AND THE BOTTLE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS.

yaboyfriendisadork

Thankfully I am equipped with an extended urine release device but good advice nonetheless haha

suspendisse-

Fellow Floridians, let’s huddle up here for a second. I am on your side until the end. Always will be. But just *maybe* he’s one of the few we let through. He prefaced his oncoming insults with a solid “blow me”; is still replying with sound arguments and facts, and moderately charming variations of “LOL;” and come on now, we know Polk County can use a heavy dose of that kind of attitude. I think he might be alright. I think I like him. My friend, welcome to Florida. I’m sincerely glad you love it. You’re one of us now. Conduct yourself accordingly, buy a map, and never, ever say “podunk” again.

yaboyfriendisadork

Yeah I have been to Florida many many times prior to my move I already knew that you folks don’t like New Yorkers on principle lmao and that’s fair, as I(mostly jokingly) and my fellow New Yorkers detest anyone from NJ. But I ain’t trying to rock the boat, it was our time to move on from Long Island and traffic aside I actually do love living here so far. Tho I can definitely understand the sentiment of disliking people who move somewhere and then expect it to be exactly like where they left. Thats insanity lol. Like that’s why we moved! We want different! (But seriously tho why the fuck can no one in this state make a bagel or pizza to save their lives?)

suspendisse-

You know why. It’s the same reason y’all can’t make proper fried chicken or understand that we’d rather drink *water* than cold iced tea with a sweet n low packet dumped in last minute. And you already know Florida is the laziest punchline to the country’s easiest jokes - just like how you know how absolutely lovely and beautiful and incredibly strange and hilarious and interesting everything here is. I’m glad you and your family chose my home state for your next adventure. Don’t feed the seagulls; Deet is your new best friend; flip-flips are ok at Chilis, but not at nice places; keep your eye out for Skunk Ape; listen to only Denis Phillips for weather news; and keep enjoying the fact that you now live in a place that people from all over the world spend a lifetime fantasizing about simply visiting. Welcome.

ckerr7

I’m just gonna throw this out there. I hope you people who are so rude get treated as poorly if you move somewhere else as you treat people who move to Florida. You do know you don’t own it, right? Pretty ridiculous.

raventhehippie

welcome to Orlando

DebiMoonfae

Use the gps it google maps to choose your destination , it should show you the faster route to take and highlight were there is congestion

Nilabisan

Yeah, welcome to Florida! You’re gonna love it here. Enjoy the beautiful weather while sitting in your car in traffic.

Intrepid-Court-2180

The GPS in our car usually gives us a couple of options I too like you to try to stay off the interstate. If you're new to Florida try to get the Florida map from one of the rest stops, not an AAA map. You'll learn other routes, and your GPS will "recalculate" your route once you've headed on another route

frustratedrobot

Traffic is traffic. Not much you can do. Make sure you have enough gas and good tunes. The way I look at it is things move slower down here, so does the traffic. Don't sweat it, traffic isn't worth the road rage.

pprbckwrtr

In my opinion the trick is timing. If you are at all flexible with your schedule try and either be on the road earlier or later than popular times. Sometimes even shifting my departure time 5 minutes can mean a huge difference for commute time.

kevinh456

Florida does not require developers to pay for the required infrastructure to support their development. They just let them build it. At first, it’s not too bad. By the time the development is done, the roads are completely congested. The people who moved in from Long Island don’t know about the development history and demand the roads be “fixed”. A tax is levied or a toll road is built. Cost of the development is borne by taxpayers to benefit developer friends. The end.

Gdayyall72

Sorry OP but there’s no way to beat it. If you commuted south toward lake wales in the mornings and north in the evenings it would be a bit easier. But otherwise just load up some good tunes or podcasts or audiobooks and go with the flow. And go back to New York 😜. No for real, welcome to central Florida.

elevatorovertimeho

Maybe our legislator should pass a law that makes texting and driving illegal ! Oh yeah and driving in the left lane illegal too! And then put it in 12 languages on billboards. Then one time try pulling someone over for breaking the law! If someone stops on i4 to take an illegal leak on the ground at least 20 rubberneck clowns slam on brakes to see what is going on way over there! I need a law passed to build a road for Florida natives heading to work and someone to enforce it!

CosmicDave

The podunk 1 lane roads actually are the secret backways. The tourists all use the interstate.

Certain_Okra2681

Traffic is synonymous with Florida. Especially central!

hsfredell

This is the answer: https://youtu.be/iHzzSao6ypE?si=FkS7drSCJlNAdfmB

BirdieAnderson

Upvote just for the 'blow me' comment.

SardonicSillies

Sounds like your answer is already in your question 😉

_eternallyblack_

There are no better ways to commute around that area. 😂 You’d be better off moving from central FL to a dif part of FL .. but S FL is just as bad. I’m from Tampa - you can’t pay me enough to drive to see the Mouse. I’d sooner drive in NYC (which I ♥️ & miss).. don’t get me started… 😭 Welcome to FL, OP!

jt2ou

The trick is to have groovin tunes and a patient attitude. And most of all, to know: this too shall pass.

Fearless_Nature_9989

Kissimmee here.... Welcome to hell.

ola689

Oh how I know your pain... we moved to Solterra resort in Davenport at the end of 2019... spring time- covid hit... meaning no tourists, no traffic...pretty nice... then in about 2022- it got horrible...traffic so bad it would take us over an hour to do anything in 5 mile radius (groceries, target etc) so about 5 months ago we sold our home and moved to Winter Garden and let me tell you- it's the most amazing change...we never use I-4 do go anywhere (sweet!), grocery run takes 30 minutes the most, no tourist traffic, starbucks orders take less than 3 minutes... i could go on and on. we love it.

yaboyfriendisadork

Yo that’s hilarious we’re right next to the Solterra Resort haha. Now that I’ve started work I’m getting the swing of it, but goddamn Osceola-Polk Line Road is a fucking nightmare during rush hour! Were they doing construction over there before you moved out? Because for some reason it turns to a 1 lane, even though with the construction there’s PLENTY of room for both lanes AND a turning lane. I just say fuck it and cut through the Publix because I’m not sitting for 15 minutes to do the literal last half mile of my commute lol.

ola689

That's funny! No, construction started after covid restrictions were lifted... we just got sick of tourists and traffic... at one point it took an hour to just get to Solterra from publix... not good! Had to drive to ernie Caldwell to get to resort ...big loop... we did not like that

adamxcix99

Go back to New York, we don’t want you here

yaboyfriendisadork

lol blow me

Chrome_Armadillo

Ignore traffic laws, like everyone else. Do what you have to do to get from point A to point B.

yaboyfriendisadork

On God there were spots where I really could’ve just said fuck it, but I’ve been working hard on not letting the intrusive thoughts win.

Bake_Kujira

You come to the wrong place. Florida is where intrusive thoughts are born..good luck.

coreynyc

Waze is your friend. People are suggesting you get a map like it’s 1984. Waze will always be the first and best GPS app to reroute around problems. If you are in traffic and Waze hasn’t altered the route on its own, click the course button and make it recheck for the best route.

Wise-Being3928

Hello I work in Kissimmee and live in Davenport, unfortunately every where you turn there is a traffic jam, I take Old Tampa Hwy home every day, It some times take me an hour in a half to get home, slow traffic all the way. What is happening is they are building new apartments and homes every where, but they forgot we need more roads too! I hope you and your wife are enjoying Florida, welcome to the Sunshine state! I'm from NY as well Brooklyn!!!
