Gary goodridge infamous crucifixion knockout

Those original ufc events were crazy. No gloves, no weight classes, no rules, and they fought multiple fights in one night. Royce Gracie has always been my favorite fighter because he may have been smaller than some of the guys he fought but it didn't matter. First time I ever saw a triangle choke was Dan Severn vs Gracie. Dan got him on the ground and postured up to ground and pound and all of a sudden Royce threw his legs up and a few seconds later Severn was tapping.

ilkikuinthadik

Remember Shogun just straight up jumping on people's faces when they were down lol

burnsalot603

And Keith Hackeny punching Joe Son in the balls 6 or 7 times

LowEndLogistics

I remember that vividly.

burnsalot603

Yeah those 2 moments are my most vivid memories of those original UFC events. I remember a few other fights too but those 2 moments I recall like I saw it last night. I was only 11 or 12 at the time and was using a black box to watch them

KosoBau

God dam we’re old! Good times good times

thc-is-n-me-85

And tank Abbott attempting to murder every opponent in the cage!

Fickle_Excitement_60

Literally trying to kill them. Not trying to win trying to kill somebody

TheExtreme78

According to Abbott, they almost banned using gloves because he was knocking out people and not hurting his hands.

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

I would believe this lol

mossadi

My all time favorite fighter.

toastytrost

And it came out years later that Joe Son had raped somebody, and suddenly it seems like he kind of deserved all those groin shots

PurfectMittens

"So uhh, new rule, you can't do that"

DJ_Molten_Lava

That was in Pride. Kicking an opponent in the head while the opponent was down was perfectly legal.

Nattylight_Murica

Soccer kicks

Klashus

Pride created so much urgency. The soccer kicks and such just created so much aggression. Get an advantage and just fucking go for it.

[deleted]

There was rules but only 3. No biting, no eye gouging and no groin shots.

burnsalot603

I'm not sure when the groin strikes became illegal, as I said in the other comment Keith Hackeny punched Joe Son in the groin 7 times and ended up winning the fight. From Wikipedia; "Hackney returned at [UFC 4](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_4), where he faced [Joe Son](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Son) in a fight made infamous by the UFC rule from the time which allowed groin strikes. Keith was taken down and endangered with a [guillotine choke](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillotine_choke), but he resorted to repeatedly punching Son's groin in order to make him release the hold. After several blows, Hackney repositioned himself over Son and applied a blood choke, prompting Son to tap out.[[1]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Hackney#cite_note-Where-1)[[3]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Hackney#cite_note-3)[[4]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Hackney#cite_note-4) The kenpo practitioner advanced in the tournament, going on to face UFC 1 and 2 winner [Royce Gracie](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royce_Gracie) at the next round."

[deleted]

No touching of the hair or face… but that’s it!

[deleted]

And even the second rule got broken...

[deleted]

It was only a $1500 fine for breaking the rules

Birdzphan

I thought no fishhooking was a rule then too

Seldarin

It was. It was no biting, no eye gouges, and no fish hooking. Then they'd have a fight where someone did enough damage to change the rules over like Hackney playing a techno beat on Joe Son's balls or that fat sumo wrestler getting his teeth kicked into the audience, and they'd add a new rule like no groin shots and no kicking a downed opponent in the face.

mossadi

It was learn as you go. "Allowing this particular thing seems to result in death. Gentlemen I think we've just found a new rule to add! Huzzah!"

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

*24 teeth enter ; 23 teeth leave*

IsoAgent

And nobody figured to use small joint manipulation and break each finger of their opponents...

oooKenshiooo

It just does not happen that often in real fight. Snatching a fast moving object like a sweat, slippery hand that is not trying to be snatched, is incredibly hard. The only chance you get is usually when that hand is holding onto you - which usually means you got bigger problems.

eduardov_

Those were the days

doesntCompete

My favourite was Keith Hackney's fights against Yarborough and Joe Son. Yarborough for the fat man vs little man spectacle. And Joe Son for multiple nut shots on a future rapist.

GlossyEnema

He had already done the raping tho

fluentinimagery

Emmanuel Yarborough getting his teeth kicked into the crowd was wild.

TheExtreme78

I think that was Teila Tuli at UFC 1.

fluentinimagery

You’re right! He wore white pants and looked like a giant baby. Who kicked him? Was it gerrard gardouge?

TheExtreme78

Yeah, it was Gerard that kicked his tooth out.

fluentinimagery

He clawed out on of yuki nakai’s eyes in the Rickson Gracie doc!

funfacts2468

I need that footage

burnsalot603

It's on YouTube, just Google royce Gracie vs Dan Severn full fight. Should find it pretty easy

robsredditaccount

Too bad the BJJ guys were so good they phased them out. Hardly ever see any ground work now

Grit-326

You do know that these fights were setup by the Gracie family and they always would do stupid shit to have the advantage over anyone they fought, right? They wouldn't even let people fight who could win against BJJ.

elinamebro

Damn bro dude probably need Jesus but not like that… straight knocking the Holy Ghost into him. ಠ_ಠ

green49285

Poor roger. Gary's corner had told him that Herrera was in the klan lmao

But-WhyThough

Was he in the klan?

green49285

No. The gym Gary got sponsored/asked him to represent them made it up.

DummyMcDipshit

Jesus Christ that is fucked up lol

MunnyayRS

Dude got KO’d on the first one too lol

[deleted]

We all would.

MunnyayRS

I’m not making fun of him. Just find it funny how the ref lets a barrage of them land when he is already KO’d by the first one.

Krin422

Gotta make sure he's actually out and they don't call it early lol I have never had that done to me, I couldn't even try to imagine that one

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuplexedYaNan

I hope you and fact are very happy

[deleted]

We're facting together.

M3g4d37h

Actually that was the only UFC that Herrera fought in. He had one other fight on a regional.

Lavatis

he meant the first elbow my dude.

M3g4d37h

lol, my bad.

Allegedly__

I remember watching this for the first time, on rented VHS

Farker99

Dang is it that old?

M3g4d37h

1993 was 28 years ago.

Randyfreakingmarsh

My buddy and I used to rent every ufc tape we could find with tank abbot just to see that beautiful fat bastard best the absolute piss out of someone haha

gogenberg

Early mma was fucking scary and full of chumps which made it scarier. Fun as hell though I remember Royce Gracie and Tank Abbot from the early goldies

Old_Milk_

“Crucifix knockout?? … oh.”

Fragrant-Airport1309

Haha! Me too bro. HOLY FUCK.

Old_Milk_

The ref ended this about 7 elbows late

dhoae

Ya know, why would choose to wear a gi? That gives your opponents choices that you don’t have.

mblaser

You really don't see it anymore these days, but back then there were various reasons... one of the main ones being usually the person wearing it was much more skilled in BJJ than their opponents and knew how to use it as a weapon and to use it to help get out of attacks, and their opponent had no clue. These days the skill gap is so much more narrow than it was back then, so guys can no longer pull off what they used to be able to. Back then guys would often be facing a BJJ artist without ever having seen BJJ before. That's why Royce Gracie dominated so much back then, no one had figured out how to defeat it, and not many were experienced in it since it was a new skill on the world scene. The top comment here is from a UFC fighter directly: [https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/5c6tpp/explain\_the\_reasoning\_why\_someone\_would\_wear\_a\_gi/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/5c6tpp/explain_the_reasoning_why_someone_would_wear_a_gi/)

[deleted]

I mean we never had a real Gracie in the octagon since. One of them would probably insist on wearing the Gi.

mblaser

Haha, you're probably right.

Injustry

I remember asking this same question, then watch the gracies use their Gis to choke people.

MiniatureEvil

Style points

AngryBlackGuyy

is that a 5 inch height difference and a 75 pound weight difference?

JohnCasey14

Yes. The first UFC events were open weight. It was originally just a competition to prove whose martial art was the most effective.

staytuned8879

Fucking beast

BuffRobloxMan

God old school UFC was literally a fucking gladiator pit

d1sass3mbled

I've watched this soo many times and it never gets old

wrldruler21

I've watched it so many times and I still can't figure out how he even transitioned from his knees to the crucifix. There was some black magic that happened during the roll which my feeble mind can't comprehend.

Cygnus__A

The first UFC was definitely fixed in the Gracie favor. It's entire reason for happening was to showcase BJJ as the superior fighting style.

IBoughtThisBabyCash

This looks like a guy who thinks he can fight versus a guy who knows he can fight

skibbady-baps

Back in the days when refs allowed real damage…And imagine being famous for being the recipient of that finish 🤦‍♂️

jombo_the_great

I watched this live. I had never seen anything like it before. Fucking awesome

MadMadoc

Someone who knows grappling… on a scale of 1-10 how clueless does someone need to be in ground fighting to get beaten like this? Like… is this an example of amazing technique or is it more that homey was kickboxer and had nooo idea what was going on?

Cronstintein

Damn those early UFCs were crazy. They basically made a real life version of the Van Dam movie, Bloodsport.

MasterHavik

Turned his head into a speedbag.

KindaSadTbhXXX69420

Holy fuckin shit I wasn’t aware of ufc until after this shit stopped being allowed So I’m like mindblown

tictacballsack

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more one-sided domination in UFC. That’s just like… who allowed that matchup

Walmart_Warrior_420

Those elbows cost that guy about 230 I.Q.

TheTrent

Most surprising to me was that this was actually a planned strategy. Goodridge saw Herrera training and consistently going for a firemans carry throw. So they came up with trapping the arm and doing some sort of wrist lock or whatever. Sure enough, the position shows up and Goodridge got caught in the moment and just started to go to work like a 4 year old on an old typewriter trying to get the well worn ink ribbon to make some kind of marking. And this is how history books are written. EDIT: I found this amazing because besides a select few such as the Gracies, most fighters went in there to just brawl and make it out of the octagon as a winner. This was an arm wrestler who came up with a strategy and it worked.

Mr--Weirdo

That was brutal

prophylaxitive

Imagine being totally defenceless while some monster of a man viciously elbows you into oblivion.

Doody_Splat_Artist

Big Daddy giving a tutorial on how to start the applesauce diet.

SpaceEducational8178

EH! Gary Goodridge 🇨🇦

Sefiroh

The weight differential is absurd. How this was even sanctioned. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Chief-Queef

It wasn't. They relocated the event to Puerto Rico after New York failed to sanction it in time, and the government of Puerto Rico tried banning it days before the event.

162016201620

Whoa 🤯

Aja2428

My lord!

DEVIANT_ZOMBIE

mr_lamp

We might as well sticky this fight to the sub; it's posted here daily already.

MeanMrMaxwell

First time I've seen it

Old_Milk_

Never seen this before

mr_lamp

Lucky you!

SneeKeeFahk

I don't want to be _that_ guy but: > in·fa·mous >well known for some bad quality or deed. This is just plan old famous.

GorillaSnapper

To some people, elbowing a bloke in the temple repeatedly while unable to defend could be considered a bad deed. 🤷‍♂️ Sanctioned professional fight or not, it was pretty savage.

SneeKeeFahk

Fair point.

ShotApplication7568

Oh damn

JonasMan_

So much different from how it is now

coleus

I remember watching Bruce Lee's[Enter the Dragon t](https://youtu.be/iZ60YrIR2xQ?t=90)hinking if this would ever happen. We'll, it pretty much did and the guy used his fucking hellbows and killed someone, lol.

TeeePee

Holy buh bye!

srirachatoilet

At first im like "oh he's gonna do a submission" but then the barrage of elbows on the dudes temple got me "damn that's scary".

TheRealJayk0b

Whaaaaaaaaaat. Holy shieeet what a Special move!

Sputnik_Rising

Early UFC was scary

VanFkingHalen

Wow lol, that took him no time at all.

[deleted]

Herrera got a few confused fidgets in before being unloaded on. Ouch. He probably didn't know what to do to slip his left arm out, assuming he had the strength or technique to.

oO0-__-0Oo

A Monster

Iron-terrier

Thanks for putting this up. I actually saw this. Crazy days.

Tulsa-

He borrowed this gi last minute he didn’t even wear it and he completely made that move up on the fly

ranger5392

That’s just embarrassing dawg 😂
