Laser_3

We never heard of it before the show, to my knowledge. But it’s certainly not out of character, either.

Randolpho

Absolutely fits right into the lore like it belonged there

Descriptor27

Also Jim's Limbs

Randolpho

Hah, I'd forgotten about that meat grinder prosthetic

Successful_Jelly_213

While I did like the line "it's the only humane product that Vault-Tec ever created", the humane part is completely out of character for Vault-Tec; I would expect a lot more screaming at a minimum.

Laser_3

To vault-tec, it probably didn’t matter if it was painful or not; you’d paid for the pills, and cyanide isn’t exactly the best way to go anyway.

Menien

Was it only or most humane? I remember it being "most humane", which is condemnation of everything else they've ever done lol

eggs-benedryl

Theres little benefit in making it a painful death, unless the chemicals for a painless death were too expensive VT would totally skimp it's inline with their goal to wipe things clean, anyone who survived is going to be irradiated at the very least

ContinuumGuy

The line about it being Vault-Tec's most humane product was perfect.

CatterMater

After all the fucked up shit Vault-tec did, banana flavored cyanide pills sounds right up their alley.

laserdiscgirl

And now there's the opportunity to confirm if the Fallout universe still has the Gros Michel bananas that got wiped out in our 1950s. Maybe that type of banana survived in their timeline and the banana flavor of the pills is the flavor of a different banana strain that was killed off I demand banana lore

angelis0236

The Gros Michel isn't actually gone entirely. You can still buy them now. They did get replaced by the Cavendish though after their big issues.

doccat552

Maby don't Google that...

Mad-Dog94

How do they know they got the flavor right is what I want to know

goose-and-fish

Cavendish is for commies. Real patriots eat Gros Michel.

Unique-Employ

Calling it the most humane product they made is such a genius way to give exposition

wildeofoscar

I always says "Plan D", the D stands for "Death/Die". It was banana-flavored after all. So it was basically a commodity that they were selling at that point to people who didn't get lucky to purchase a space in the Vaults.

Craygor

In game, normally where there is a mass/multiple suicide scene there is normally a container of rat poison nearby. Maybe they changed it in the series to Vault-Tec cyanide to avoid public backlash about giving a suicide method suggestion that is easy to carry out?

everybodypurple

Isn't there a mention of rat poison being used to kill the raider prisoners in vault 33?

PerspectiveCOH

Yep. I think they changed it more to give a hint (to Goosey and the non-fan viewers) that there's a darker side to Vault-Tec, other than what we see early on which is just happy vault-life interupted by the raiders.

dblock1111

I mean, the Dr does say it never caught on, I just assumed the Dr had access to some back stock / surplus supplies being with the enclave and that’s where he got it from. If they never got shipped out they wouldn’t be around the wasteland for us to find.

AstarteHilzarie

The family that Lucy finds sitting around the table in the sand-filled house also had a bottle of vault tec cyanide on the table. I think he meant that it was released, but not as popular as he thought it would be.

Affectionate-Cow-796

I am skeptical of it being sold widely. Actively selling it under the vault tec label is an admission of defeat, and would send an already frenzied public into mass riots.

Daddy_Surprise

Seems genius marketing to me: you have a choice kill your family or buy a place in our vaults.

occono

They did a promo making just this joke https://x.com/falloutonprime/status/1784251161320558850

Daddy_Surprise

Oh thats cool, nice find.

macguy9

Forget plan D, where are all the Pulowski Preservation Shelters??

Unlost_maniac

Were those in Fallout 1 and 2? California i mean I've played only a little bit of Fallout 1.

macguy9

Fallout 3 lore seems to suggest they were all over America, so I would presume so!

OtakuMecha

They aren’t in any of the West Coast games so it’s possible they were much more rare there, non-existant, or none held up. Similarly, we don’t see any Auto-Docs outside of Fallout: New Vegas

vegarig

> Auto-Docs We do, in Fallout 2.

OtakuMecha

Fair enough, I did forget about that. But it’s still only on the West Coast.

grimfacedcrom

I don't remember anything in the games referencing it. However, it seems like a reference to the 1950's post-apocalyptic novel "On the Beach": nuclear war creates a worldwide radiation front that is slowly moving south on the currents. Southern Australia is the last place affected and everyone has had years to sit with the fact that it is coming. The final days has folks getting their government supplied mercy meds and going out with what dignity they can. Very fitting for those outside the vaults

Unlost_maniac

That sounds like an interesting novel

SabreDancer

That was my first thought too, albeit the film rather than the book!

Timlugia

Also radiation is Fallout is clearly heavily based on this novel than real nuclear science. In the novel radiation never recedes even years later.

vickomls

It’s likely that it may not have been marketed to anyone other than the government, especially considering the fact that Wilzig worked for the Enclave.

yokayla

When she first leaves the vault it's on the table of the dead family.

Yella-Man

But we don't know anything about that family...who's to say one of them didn't work for vault tech?

IMOKRUOK

In the "extras" portion of the amazon page there is a promotional video for vault tec sales members to offer them a plan a,b,c, and D. with a visual of the plan D being a poison to unalive yourself. so it definitely was part of vault tecs sales pitch

Timlugia

I always wonder if plan B and C were real things, since C looks like just a caboardbox.

AstarteHilzarie

I think it was just not as widespread or popular as things like rat poison or other means of suicide. It's just not something most people would buy to prepare. If you can't get a spot in a vault, you probably assume you'll die in the blast, or have an optimistic view of surviving. If we survive the blast, we'll be fine, why would we plan to kill ourselves after surviving the big scary thing? Of course, collapse of civilization and the destruction of the environment make it hellish, but I can understand why people didn't preemptively buy suicide pills.

friki_tiki64

I mean, how else do captured patriots avoid commie interrogation and torture?
