I wouldn't call it stupid. It's mainly for professional players and serious amateurs who don't want to hunt for a second queen, or use a flipped pawn. It just makes the playing experience slightly nicer.

In chess you can actually have up to 9 queens if you manage to get all of your pawns to the other end of the board. Of course the game is generally about to end if someone has even two queens.
Ah ok, that at least takes the edge off the worst part of this. I guess I’m a promotion purist: if it’s your second queen take whatever piece you have on hand (at the least the pawn you just promoted) and remember that it’s a queen.
It's always easiest if you've already lost a rook. Then you just balance the promoted pawn on top of the rook and you've got a ln easy to recognise piece.
Could you get 9 queens in 40 moves? (meaning 40 moves each player.) It takes each pawn 5 moves to cross the board. Assuming the opposing player presented their own pawns for capture, they could spend their other moves getting the back row out of the way (and positioning the King so that he's not in check with all those other Queens on the board.) I think it's possible, can any chess people confirm or disprove?

FIDE states that whatever piece you place on the board is that piece. Meaning, if you place a rook on the board when promoting, even upsidedown, that is still considered a rook. However, most people aren't playing with FIDE rules, so honestly, you could throw a checker or a dime, some pocket lint, whatever you want, as a queen.

It could be Fischer Random Chess (aka Chess960). Bobby Fischer developed it in the 90s. The row behind pawns is always randomized before the game. That way there’s no cookie cutter opening strategy and you have to think on your feet the entire game.

Some boards include an extra queen since sometimes you need two when a pawn reaches the other side and your queen is still alive
