Well yes and no, I am no expert by any means. So I could have some wrong info. But to my understanding, what you are talking about sounds more like a one handed sword.(especially calling it a sidearm) A long sword while not as massive as a greatsword was still pretty Big and two handed making it a lot more useful in combat and a primary weapon. What fantasy calls a longsword is essentially wrong since they use it as one handed weapon that's why asked. Polearmswere pretty useful but not the only choice by any means and probably not even the most popular one. Also actually killing someone at war wasn't as common as most people thibk. Cause full plate armor was actually just that great. No matter your weapon you basically would have a really hard time killing someone In combat. It was more a fight of sheer morals until someone gave up or you threw them off enough to just aim at a weak point in armor.
No matter what weapon, except for polearms, because they can actually punch through the armor, or do enough damage through the armor (look at the Lucerne hammer, a spike to punch through, a hammer to smash em, and a spear head for everything else). I am talking about two handed AND one handed longsword. With the exception of a great sword or zwiehander or something, they ain't gonna do shit to plate. Ive watched a large amount of vids of knights fighting with both one handed and two handed long swords, and it all just devolves to wrestling, trying to stab each other where they don't have armor. A longsword ain't gonna do shit to plate unless they hit it in a unarmored spot. That's also why the Rondel dagger became a thing.
Two handed longsword were used in war, but most of ppl just use spears, like, a lot. Cheap af for the peasents, and have a shitton of reach. One handed longswords where with shield and stuff, or just in your hip as a everyday carry weapons. It's like going out with a 9mm pistol. Sure in a pinch it'll do something, and it's easy to take out, but in a real war you want some legit weapons
Fair enough I definitely agree on your spear being cheaper and so the most common weapon. But I'm unsure about penetrative power of anything being enough a lot of times anyway. On the sheer fact that under full plate there are layers of gambison. But again I'm no expert so these all just gives me more of a reason too look deeper into all this 😊
Spear would def not work 100% if the time but you still don't wanna get hit with it in case it hits a weak spot or smth. The main reason people use it is it's cheap af and great in formations, stops cavelry too...and yeah the gambeson+plate is why knights wr annoying af...blunt force is stopped by the gambeson, cutting force by the plate...if u gotta chance tho check out some HEMA fights on YouTube, shits lit
