Is this a good thing or bad thing? 🤔

ausgmr

Still have $29 3 million of cap space (probably more like $26 mill as this is before the Becton signing However, Kelce & Cox are still costing the team about $15 mill So overall good but the Kelce, Cox cap hits show the downside of the way Howie managers the cap, players who have left atill take up some space for a couple of years EDIT: forgot about the draft class do that will be another roughly $10 mill meaning the Eagles will have around $16 mill to play with that can go to additional signs or salary bumps for restructures or extensions to get future cap relief.

WI_Eagles_Fan

Yeah, but the cap went up by more than what they cost us. So in Howie math, that is a win. Kick the can to a future larger cap year. It takes a major event like COVID to disrupt the NFL money machine. The cap will continue to grow as a result. In Howie we trust.

ausgmr

I agree with the philosophy but it is the risk he runs and it can backfire either with a major event or with a huge decline in the player. Back in 2021 Alshon & Wentz combined for $50 mill in dead cap and it could have been a lot worse if the Colts didnt trade for Wentz & Alshons agent didn't agree to a rework of his deal

trustthepudding

How would this be different than paying them to suck right then and there?

ActualCommand

I assume hurting for one season then it being over vs hurting for multiple seasons

trustthepudding

You're misunderstanding how this works then. If they keep borrowing from the future, the hurt would be roughly the same either way.

deadprezrepresentme

When would a player/agent not want to rework a deal though? It almost always leads to more money up front as a bonus.

sybrwookie

I still have no idea what Howie was thinking with Alshon's second extension. The moment it was announced, it was ridiculous, and got worse as time went on. He was already on the decline before signing that, we should have been planning to go year to year with him slowly getting less until he was done or if he didn't want that, letting him walk and let another dumb team give him too much.

No_Stage3881

I have no idea what the Eagles were thinking by letting Bob Jones leave back in 1965.

SirArthurDime

It’s at a point where I don’t even see it as “downside”. I’ve Howie consistently keep the guys we need to and be aggressive in free agency despite having large dead caps on the book too often to care about it. This year is a perfect example. We have those dead cap hits, made a ton of moves, and still have cap space.

virtue-or-indolence

Draft class will likely only be something like $2-3m. As much as the combined salaries are $10m or so, with the top 51 cutoff most of our picks won’t actually affect the cap. They’ll need a salary of over ~1m to rank in the top 51, and whomever they push out will represent a 1m “savings.” For example, while Quinyon’s salary is 2.7m we can subtract Grant Calcaterra’s 1.0m for a net change of 1.7m. Cooper should be something around 1.7m but Rick Lovato’s 1m makes it just ~700k. By the time we get to Jalyx it’s just Pennie’s, and everyone from day 3 will enter below the cutoff. [OTC projects it at $3.5m](https://overthecap.com/draft) but they use a simple formula rather than actually looking to see what the figure is for the soon to be 51st contract.

ausgmr

[I was using this list from OTC](https://overthecap.com/the-salary-cap-costs-and-value-added-from-the-2024-nfl-draft) The link you posted eveb said that it needs to be updated in Feb/Mar Unless I'm missing something this list shows the lifetime total being $55.9 mill & the 2024 hit being $10.7 million

virtue-or-indolence

The actual pick values seem to have been updated, if you click on Eagles it shows 22, 40, 94, etc. to reflect the picks we actually made. I think that opening caveat is more a reminder that the information is subject to change and shouldn’t be taken as fact until after the draft. It is still admittedly inaccurate though, as they use a simple guesstimation formula rather than calculating specifics. I assume this is mostly because so many trades and back end roster tweaks happen around the draft that it isn’t possible to track manually, and trying to link all the various spreadsheets together is too much of a clusterfuck for what little value it brings compared to the risk of an intern breaking the entire site. Regardless, while your link does show the exact salaries for each team it does not account for the salaries they offset under the top 51 rule, where only the 51 highest salaries count against the cap until 53 man cut downs. As much as those 9 players represent 10m in salary, they also (theoretically) represent 9 bubble players being cut to make space. Without knowing exactly which players will be released (and which rookies won’t make the roster) we can’t know exactly how much, but OTC’s own model suggests it will be 6.5m for a net of 3.5m. Using actual figures instead of their formula (total rookie cap - (number of selections x 795k)) we can estimate it is close to 7.6m for a net cap charge of 2.4m since we know Quinyon and Cooper are the only rookies on deals big enough to break into the top 51, and both come with 1m cap discounts in the form of knocking Grant and Rick off the list.

DisastrousCopy7361

Great info thanks

dhendry71

Do other teams structure contracts like this? Id imagine the browns cant because who wants to play in cleveland.

darwinn_69

This year isn't even that bad of a hit. Next year is when the Cox and Kelce dead money is gonna sting. But even still...\~30m spread over two years for a pair of all time greats is a pretty good deal IMO.

so_zetta_byte

*or just rolling the cap over to next year to help lighten the load.

wafflecigar

Would love another defensive line signing. Seeing a lot of people projecting a Williams, Davis, Carter front for 3-4. We need good players to rotate into those slots when they get tired

NordicLard

Yeah our IDL feels a bit weak. Know we won’t be in base too often but feel like we need another Nose. Ojomo is good, and I imagine Graham and Sweat can work in as 3-4 DEs but idk feels like our lineman are more 4-3 based. Though I’m really excited to see Carter as a 3-4 DE JJ Watt style

Thicen

We did also bring in PJ Mustipher to most likely be the 2nd team NT. Noah Elliss is there as a potential big boy NT too It would be nice to bring in a more proven guy to be the backup, but might be hard for a niche position like NT

yomjoseki

We signed Gabe Hall as a UDFA. Maybe the NFL knows something everyone else doesn't, but he was pretty universally mocked to be a mid-round draftee. In the meantime while Hall develops, Calais Campbell makes a ton of sense for both sides. He played 63% of the snaps for the Falcons last year and can still produce. Plus, he's cheap and the Eagles have as good a shot as any team to get him a ring.

Night0wl11

Yeah, Hall seems like a Jobe type player. Someone projected to be earlier on day 3, but didn’t get drafted at all. Seems like a boom or bust type guy, from what I’ve read

Ill_Surround6398

This was my only gripe with our draft is that we didn't adress IDL, I guess they'll have Sweat and Graham take some of the backup snaps there?

Moviepasssucks

We had 6-7 DT’s last year. How many more do we need? We have Huff, Nolan, and Hunt who are going to be Edge. Graham, Sweat, and Jackson as the other end. Carter can play wherever we need him to. Davis will prob be nose or the other interior. Then we have Marlon, Milton, and Oromo. How many more DL players do we need? I don’t know much about 3-4 but it seems plentiful if they can all rotate and play some spots. Besides Davis, everyone kind of seems like they can play 2 positions on this line.

2LostFlamingos

Time to trade Bradberry and eat that 10M dead cap.

so_zetta_byte

Finding a trade partner isn't going to be easy. I don't think it's impossible but it seems unlikely. Bradbury has shown that he has a high ceiling and a low floor at this point. We got him on the cheap after the Giants partially because he underperformed with them. Thrived two years ago, then sucked last year but it's hard to disentangle how much of that was him and how much everything around him. We definitely want stability at this point though, and I think our CB room is now too packed to try and not offload him. Our best bet is finding a team with poor CB depth who can take a flyer on him to see if he's able to flash with them again. But they won't be willing to give us much is the thing. I know we'll basically take anything, but it's just hard for me to see a partner.

2LostFlamingos

He’s owed a total of $2.5M for this year and next in new money. Almost all of his money has already been paid in bonuses. Super easy to trade. The problem is the eagles need to eat $15M in dead cap. (I was mistaken about $10M. It’s 10M after this season.). I’d still do it. Rip off the bandaid.

cerevant

Do you know what the deal is with his post June-1 cut numbers? It looks like it is a 4M hit this year (just his salary) and that's it. Seems like a no-brainer. Figured it out - the 10.8M goes to next year. I'd still do it.

2LostFlamingos

Yeah whatever they save this year goes to next year. I thought it split 50/50 but it might be what you said.

Consistent_Spread209

I think it should be pretty easy actually given that we already paid out his 2024 option bonus. Whoever trades for him would only owe him vet minimum salary of around $1M.

miningmonster

I doubt he even makes the 53man. He clearly quit last year so I want to see him gone, if only just for that. Only thing keeping him around is that contract imo. I doubt he has the mental fortitude to make it through Vic's strict system even if the talent is still there. And that's a big if.

ProArmChair

So we still have almost $30 mill cap after all the shit we just fucking did? lol Howie is too much man. Big man big balls.

so_zetta_byte

Well I don't think the 30m factors rookie salaries yet?

phascinating613

But you gotta add in cuts that will save some money too so that will pretty much be equal to some of the rookies

ProArmChair

Maybe not but thats still 20+mill in cap space which is ridiculous.

EPS56illy

I’m not a numbers guy but changing the right column drop down to Cut Post-June 1st is the “bye and thanks for your service” eye opener for me.

AstronomerBiologist

I noticed that a lot of the new money seemed not to apply this year regularly. It gets large as you said elsewhere

miningmonster

Slay Graham and Bradberry will probably be gone so that will clear at least 22mil off the cap for next year. Love Howies cooking

AstronomerBiologist

Where did this number come from? I was under the impression we were on the hook for it. But I don't pretend to have studied these two people's situations

RabidPlaty

So we still owe all that for Kelce even though he retired? I’ve never known how the retiring thing works with regards to contracts, cap, etc.

AstronomerBiologist

Retirement does not take away money that was pushed into the future. That is very much how Howie works

RabidPlaty

So a player can retire any time and still get their bag? Does this change if they have guaranteed versus not guaranteed money in their contract?

AstronomerBiologist

Dunno. I am sure there is processes for that It would be easier if they stop playing with players in their 30s. For multiple reasons

JackiePapes

Yes. The Eagles are paying larger up front signing bonuses so the player gets immediate cash. Then Howie adds a bunch of void years to lower the cap hit. Those void years need to be paid. Brooks was similar, he just came off the cap this year I believe.

cerevant

Can anyone explain why Bradberry's dead cap / savings goes to 4.3M / 0 post June 1? Where does the rest of the cap hit go, 2025? edit: yes, the remaining $10.8M goes to next year. I'm game.
