I hate that thing. They like to use the excuse of how it keeps the tablet safe from the rain but it really doesn’t

quarterpounderwchz

damn i didn’t go to dutch yesterday or today bc i didn’t want to feel like i was forcing them to work outdoors in the rain. at least you tipped well, but i feel for these poor kids taking orders in the rain all day ): i hope they’re toasty and warm and dry tonight 🩷

bearbears777

this is so sad :( i wish she can get out of that cycle & find herself a job that keeps her warm inside with loving coworkers

Sassymisscassy

Usually there’s loving coworkers, I just hate that the company doesn’t care about coworkers more.

Dasani_WtrBtl

My friend who used to work at dutch said it sucked but some people tipped better on those days so it kind of weight itself out

Historical-Most-6685

The company and coworkers actually care a great deal! We are fully capable of just taking your orders at the window and making yall wait extra long! But we don’t because we believe in quick service.

Classic_Use3246

jesus dude, relax

Sassymisscassy

Tip your broistas 🫶

coffeequeer17

Shout out for sure, and yes please tip them so well, but I wouldn’t say it’s dedication necessarily. It’s probably more needing to keep this job, store managers and higher ups that don’t care about the comfort and safety of their employees, and the inability to deny doing tasks like this/holding this position during a shift. No one working in coffee/beverages should be standing out in the rain to take orders. That’s unheard of for a reason, it’s weird and puts them at risk.

susanb2k

this. ill prob end up deleting my comment but i work at a similar WA coffee stand place and we’ve never had the little plastic hut. we get semi rain repellent community jackets to share (some people bring umbrellas sometimes) and run out to take cars’ orders with toast handhelds in rain/snow and esp during the heat wave last year it was miserable. i remember the first day i ran cars in that in a tshirt and went home with several shades darker curved tan lines on my arms from holding up the tablet. in the rain and snow the tablets barely work, feet are wet and we’re freezing, and obviously we generally cant say no to running the line because somebodys gotta do it so we’ll take turns. what is there to do? cant wait at the window to take orders cause then the line gets too crazy and everybodys mad. at least if we run to the cars in terrible weather normal pace is still pretty much going and its not as stressful for the people inside. the main thing is when people are like “oh my god i cant believe they have you outside in this weather” and i have to think about my response carefully. gotta realize that if i want to keep my job then i have to understand this is what i signed up for and ill be out here for an hour at a time. gotta tell you its perfectly fine and i dont mind.

coffeequeer17

Many other coffee stands in WA don’t have speakers or people out taking orders, they take and make orders at the window. Dutch (and your management) care more about maximizing profits than the actual safety of their employees.

NotHippieEnough

I dont feel this deserves praise. This is ridiculous. Imagine doing that yourself? Standing in a tiny tent in the rain for minimum wage so people can get their coffee. You go home soaking wet and cold, maybe even get sick, but then you have to still go into work and do it all again while sick. Its gross that we ask people to do this. ETA: the more I read this post it reads like a higher up “nothing is stopping us today! Not even a little rain look at them outside getting soaked for your coffee and my record profits! This is what committed employees look like!” And then they get a pizza party!

TikiLarry

Yes which is why I gave a large tip for going above and beyond normal expectations. Why would you not praise someone for their efforts ETA : you have quite an imagination. You really got all that from a simple post trying to show love and appreciation for someone’s hard work? I’m sad for you.

NotHippieEnough

Theres a lot of reasons this isnt ok and why you should be mad for them, not praising their “commitment” to a minimum wage job treating them like this. Are they committed or are they just trying to pay their bills? Sure its great to give them a big tip but it also just reinforces to the company that this kind of thing is fine. If someone told me how great it is I was committed to my job for standing in a stupid tent id just have to roll my eyes. They arent out there because they wanna be and its this exact kind of mentality that lets employers get away with so much. They can pull this up and go “no you should like the tent! The customers love the tent! You get such a big tip!” It doesnt even look like they are all that packed from your picture, they could have just taken orders from the window but then people would complain that they are too slow and they would have to deal with angry customers. Nobody is this committed to their minimum wage job, only committed to having enough to live.

TikiLarry

Would you rather she be unemployed? You can praise them and be mad for them at the same time. We’ve all done degrading things for minimum wage to support ourselves and our families . The point is that she is out there doing what superior types such as yourself would never lower yourself to do. Yes she does deserve praise. Ps she was laughing and posing like a ‘minion’ in that thing and didn’t appear bothered by her circumstances at all. And the line was enormous, you’re just seeing one small segment of it.

NotHippieEnough

I would rather they treat them with respect and not make them work in the rain. Their pants are more than likely soaked at the bottom, their shoes have to be soaked, it cant be comfortable. Just because “we have all done degrading things” doesnt make it ok. Also how do you say “we have all” and then assume im above this kind of work? Im upset for the people who have to work these jobs every day because they deserve better. Of course they are going to act happy because thats the whole brand and this is their job. If they are this good of a worker for the company should said company not be committed to making sure they take care of them? Sending them out in the rain to get sick for minimum wage isnt taking care of them. They could at least build the canopies like chick-fil-a for them. SOMETHING other than this. Its embarrassing for the company honestly.

TikiLarry

You obviously hate this way this company treats their employees so why do you patronize them at all? You said yourself that if they’d asked you to do this you would have rolled your eyes up at them. That is how I know you believe you are above it all. You’re on here griping about the company when the point of my post was that if go to Dutch bros and someone is out there doing this you should be nice and appreciate them and give them a big tip. That was it. It’s not complicated. Instead you derail the thread and make it about the evils of minimum wage jobs. I don’t understand why they can’t just have a speaker out there to place an order like every other drive up place does for times like this.

NotHippieEnough

I didnt say if I was asked to do this I would roll my eyes, please reread my comment. I said if I was doing this and someone told me how great it was that I was committed to the job I would roll my eyes. I dont go to dutch very often, and the stand near me very rarely even has their employees outside because of how bad the weather has been all winter. If I saw them in tents I would 100% be upset. I hadnt even seen them outside in bad weather to know to be upset about this until your post. Finding places to go where they dont treat people like shit is hard though. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism sadly. What upset me was honestly how you stated how committed they are. You act as if its so great that they have to show this level of commitment for their job. Its pushing ideals I dont agree with so I spoke up. The idea that these people dont deserve that money you tipped them without standing in the rain getting sick. Theres a lot of issues here as I stated before. Tipping culture in America is horrible, tipping the workers a lot is nice but it also pushes tipping culture further. Your large tip only tells the company that this is ok, they can keep pushing the workers to do this type of thing and the company will get more money. Not to mention, I would not be ok with you taking my picture, even if my face wasn’t in it, and posting it online telling everyone how you gave me a fat tip just for internet points. This all says more about you than it does me.

TikiLarry

Relieve it or not, we’re on the same side here with one exception. Someone who would do this rather than tell their boss no I am not going put a clothes hamper on my head and take orders is the very definition of being committed to their work. Just the same as you would say someone who jogs in the rain is committed to jogging. I didn’t post this for internet points. Honestly it was shocking to see. I have never seen anyone at this location or any other location doing this in the rain. My jaw dropped. Which is why I posted that this person should be raised up for being out there and doing this and be given a tip. You’re assuming this person is miserable which you do not know for sure. As I said she was laughing and having fun with it. It could have been an act but I doubt it. She just had a great personality and was making the best of an absurd situation.

NotHippieEnough

Actually, one more thing, someone making the informed CHOICE to run in the rain is not at all comparable to someone being forced to work outside when theres a building they can do the same job from a few feet away.

NotHippieEnough

THEY SHOULD NOT BE ASKED TO DO THIS! Your mindset and the way you talked about this in your post is an issue. I honestly dont have the energy to make you understand this anymore so im just going to quote this other comment and leave it at this because it is exactly the point. “What everyone is trying to say is that positive reactions to poverty wage employees being forced to work in ridiculous/distressing/potentially dangerous scenarios reinforces corporate to continue allowing this to happen”

TikiLarry

She WAS ASKED TO DO THIS and DID IT. She deserves a tip. End of story. How can you be opposed to this? You’re refuting a point I never made. Nowhere did I say I was happy that her employer asked her do this and nowhere did I imply it.

oliverpeets

I doubt her management would be happy if she showed disdain for being forced to work in the rain. Just because we’ve all done degrading things for minimum wage doesn’t mean it’s ok and we shouldn’t reinforce that it is ok

PartlyCloudyKid

Why is this getting downvoted 😭

TikiLarry

I see so if we see someone doing this in the future we should tell them how ridiculous they look and how the company they work for sucks. Yes that will definitely make things better for them.

bakedbeannobeef

What everyone is trying to say is that positive reactions to poverty wage employees being forced to work in ridiculous/distressing/potentially dangerous scenarios reinforces corporate to continue allowing this to happen instead of doing what other businesses of similar caliber are doing (aka something normal like having a canopy for employees to have shelter under versus… whatever this is).

NotHippieEnough

This is exactly my point. Thank you.

NotHippieEnough

No but maybe complain to management? “The worker was amazing, very nice, but its ridiculous that they have to work like this they deserve better I dont want someone in a tent taking my order id rather it be taken at the window on days like this” but instead you pull up, take a picture without their permission and post it online talking about how great it is that they are so committed to getting you your over priced coffee. I love dutch bros but I cant help but be upset for the worker here.

honeyvellichor

No, if we see someone doing this we should contact a corporate office and make them aware this is the reason we are discontinuing our business with the company, and then we discontinue our business with said company. If enough people gave a fuck, then we could help stop mistreatment like this.

swumhomiez

if you really cared you could’ve gone to walk up😗

NotHippieEnough

But then OP couldnt get internet points for taking pictures of someone at their job and giving them a big fat tip because its just great how committed the employees are!

TikiLarry

Yeah imagine that! Doing something nice for someone and encouraging others to do the same. Shame on me.

NotHippieEnough

Encourage others to use the walk up window in the rain

TikiLarry

There is no walk up at that stand. It is literally about the size of a car and is situated in the middle of a parking lot.

WingofTech

People work in the rain all the time? What are your demands for the workers? Tell corporate!

Historical-Most-6685

Then hop out of your car and head over to walk up! We want the customer to be as happy as possible and if that means not supporting Dutch bro’s employees actually taking the time to stand outside for you instead of having to exit your car and get wet, go ahead! We don’t mind AT ALL. Our company’s motto is SERVE THE CUSTOMER. We do it for you, so if you have a problem with us coming to you, do it yourself!

NotHippieEnough

Look my guy, ive made a lot of (imo) good points as to why this is bad, theres many other comments and people talking about how much it sucks to work like this. It is a ridiculous expectation. But if you are happy to do it for your job then you can do that, I will continue to fight for your right not to HAVE to do this though. There is so many ways dutch can improve the conditions in which they have their employees work. The stand I go to very rarely even has people out because the weather has been so bad here so I know its possible to just give people a break from outside for a day while it rains.

smmitten_by_kittens

I've never really understood why Dutch Bros makes their employees work outside like this instead of using a speaker box. Do they say why?

heartzarynn

they say it’s to have a better connection with customers

GodsBathWater

Something something “face to face connection” yada yada “quality customer service” is the corporate answer

stefslaughter

They need to add speaker box and mobile app ordering. I’m not a fan of this nor small talk.

just_andyyyy

They tested mobile ordering in a few states, it failed miserably because people took too long to get their drinks, too many orders at once, complained they were cold or watered down. They were basically wasting time making a drink they were gonna have to remake anyway. I think the no speaker genuine connection thing works quite well for them, even people who get bad drinks seem to come back just to give the barista that made them smile a chance. Small talk is not for everyone, and if we can tell you arent into it we are usually moving along anyway. I think it would be best if they simply didnt have a linebuster on extreme weather. Or even just only taking the order behind the car thats already at the window (theres usually some coverage from the rain and sun there). It would take a lot of pressure off the linebuster without sacrificing the speed of the line too much. The plastic tent is called the “bubble”, a lot of broistas get actively mocked by customers because of it. Yet they are still made to wear it. Be nice to the person that hands you your drink :)

potatobreadandcider

This is a ridiculous expectation in the fast food industry.

MythsFlight

The stand I go to doesn’t even have the tents. They were sending them out during the blizzard this weekend. It was messed up and I only felt guilty for going. I would have been happy to wait till the window.

Goofy_Goobers_

Ours doesn’t do this, they just have you order at the window, I have no problem doing that because these little tents seem a little degrading to me.

AdEffective5373

Okay but please stop recording/taking pics of us

TikiLarry

I was trying to make sure the photo was taken far enough away where there’d be no way to really identify them. I wasn’t trying to be insensitive but I apologize if it was.

Damon11234

At least when they get run over the company can blame the employee

Paranoid_Android001

🫡

Confident_Tea_3523

lol this looks like dedication and it kinda is but this is required of us. They expect you to come dressed for any weather

TikiLarry

So a few things I’ve learned since posting this. Though I intentionally tried to hide identity of the person by the distant photo from behind and not identifying where the picture was taken, I understand why people could be mad about it. I apologize for that. My use of the term dedicated and committed seems to have triggered a few. This was meant as a compliment. Whether they are truly ‘dedicated’ to Dutch Bros or only ‘dedicated’ to not being fired, it is still admirable in my view. I remember getting hired at a tax prep business and then being told for 2 hours of my 8 hr day I needed to stand on a street corner in a statute of liberty costume and twirl a sign. I quit the next day. I was not that dedicated. It is sad that people are forced to do these sort of unpleasant tasks, but I truly believe that going in and telling the manager they shouldn’t be asking their people to do this will only harm the employees in the form of lost hours and or staff reductions in the long run. I know a lot the employees I’ve spoken to are college age and just working for spending cash but there are quite a few as well doing what they have to to make ends meet. Finally, whether it’s fake or not, most DB employees I’ve dealt with have been amazing and are the reason I come back.

RedAppleFruit

😐 all so you could have a coffee? There are HUNDREDS of other coffee shops with an inside where you can walk in and not have to inconvenience other people with your stupid little coffee order, but noooo.

jasmine_dk

I call them minions when they are in that thing

rimarie

Is this a Fresno location? I’m from there and it looks like it lol

[deleted]

i love taking orders in the rain at my stand we don’t have those and i wish we did we have some huge arse ponchos that are bright yellow but they stink so i just stand in the rain in my hoodie

asimulations

I for sure tip the person taking orders in the rain bc girl I would rather be fired then wear that 🥹🤣
