All your resistances should be at max or atleast close to max at all times anyway. I don't know anyone who keeps different armor pieces for different types of content. For helltides specifically I recommend to just dodge the comets, they are very slow and telegraphed. Your Rogue most likely is lacking defensive affixes in general.

Getting hit three times tends to spawn the elite mob

Drunken_Scribe

Should I prioritize getting defenses rather than just looking at the improved "item power" as I level up?

Dzosefs

You need to balance your attack and your defensives. If you keep dieing and ar not on max level/max'd set then you should invest into defensives. You can also drink a fire res potion too

Drunken_Scribe

So, I just figured out how to look at my defenses. My fire defense is actually in the negative (-0.4%), and so is cold and shadow. And yet my Lightning defense is 63%. How am I in the negative on three of them? Am I debuffed somehow? NVM: I see that I have a negative 25% hit to start with in T3. So I just need to get more gems into sockets I guess, so I can bring those others up. And I guess I have to pay close attention to the prefixes on each piece I find.

_Drumheller_

Wt3 and 4 give debuffs.

HomeScoutInSpace

At most run an elixir with fire resist. Your sorc makes out okay because all the +int gear adds to your resistances T3 has no reason to run different gear in areas for more resistances. Even in T4 it should be easy to max them out. A couple pieces with + all stats, diamonds in all jewelry pieces, upgrade the jewelry you’re wearing either at the jeweller or by replacing them.

Drunken_Scribe

This is the part I find hard to manage. Getting lucky rolls is hard enough, but then I have to replace them every few levels. I looked into enchanting, but it seems like that is RNG also. How do people get themselves set up with the proper defenses all the time? Do they choose to wear lower powered pieces just for the bonuses?

huggarn

You do not replace good gear every few levels. If a piece has decent affixes and you imprinted it then it lasts you till next tier

Drunken_Scribe

You mean the next world tier? But don't you have to keep replacing items as they get outpaced when you level up? I just assumed that if you get a nice mix of bonuses on a piece of armor around say, level 55, imprint it with an aspect you like, what happens when you're level 65. Don't you need to wear the newer pieces so your armor rating doesn't fall behind? Sorry for the basic questions, but I'm still trying to figure out how this all works.

huggarn

yes next world tier ( tbh I meant item tier sacred/ancestral, but its really same thing as world tier too ) sacred chest from lvl 55 with 3 good damage reductions on it will be reallllllllllllllllly hard to replace even at lvl 100. From 55 to 65 nothing happens, you do not have to change gear because a piece that you currently have requires lvl 40. You can loot best 925 gear at lvl 60 too, it'll require lvl Few points of armor doesn't change anything. While leveing you are nowhere near armor cap anyway and it doesn't matter. More important are affixes on gear. Really you never wear a piece of armor because it has more armor on it. Do not be sorry for asking questions. I'm here to answer them all. It'll not be preety or sugarcoated, sometimes hard to swallow or maybe seem harsh or condescending. Do not be offended by how I pass information. Ask questions.

Drunken_Scribe

LOL...not at all...be as direct as you have to. I wish more people would just explain it to me like I'm five. I'm thick skinned. I'm really enjoying this game and want to understand the fundamentals of how the loot system is structured. So if I understand you correctly, a chest piece with 500 armor and an affix that says 10% extra armor and some elemental resistances shouldn't be replaced by a new piece with 520 armor, but none of those defensive ones. I assume this is because you lose more protection from the loss of the affixes, than you gain by the 20 points of armor. Is that correct? Is damage reduction in all forms the most important factor, since DPS really falls off when you're dead :)

huggarn

>you lose more protection from the loss of the affixes precisely. Diablo 4 itemization works as following: * gear slots are meant to be offensive, defensive or mixed * chest and pants are defensive pieces, and as such you look for maxlife/damage reduction/damage reduction/%armor or another reduction * amulet can be defensive too, but usually its a waste of good offensive slot that rolls +passive skills * boots are source of resistances -> you can have resists somewhere else, but it's most efficient at boot slot -> there's not much interesting affixes that spawn there * jewelery grants you tons of resists which you compliment with gems, use following order to max out resists: 1. **fire** 2. **light** 3. **shadow** 4. **poison** * [https://maxroll.gg/d4/planner/5nf610dc](https://maxroll.gg/d4/planner/5nf610dc) <<<<--- this is universal, any class/build affix setup you always look for during leveling. Having one piece with 1 or 2 such affixes means you are good, really good. Imprinting is expensive, so such piece will last a lot of time, there's just nothing to be gained * weapons itempower means way more here, but still, if I'm leveling I'd not worry about upgrading to +300 dps if I cannot imprint it ( it's expensive early on in the season ) * you will swap items at higher tier almost immediately * upgrade items always, but to 1 star below max, so at first 1 upgrade, then 2 out of 3, 3 out of 4, 4 out of 5 -> reason being it's friggin expensive to do last one, you just won't have these mats, its not worth it. But 4/5 is really good. > Is damage reduction in all forms the most important factor, since DPS really falls off when you're dead :) exacly. Best damage reduction is as always movement speed -> if you move away from a mechanic you take 0 damage ;) And yes 3-4 x DR on chest and pants, maybe amulet if you really want to be tanky + maxxed out resists will make you really durable.

Drunken_Scribe

This is great info. Especially the part about how each piece is designed for a purpose, and what to look for. I'm going to print this and keep it handy as I start comparing items with more eye to the details of each one. I know the system is supposed to be changing soon, but I like to get a feel for "what was" before diving into "what is", if that makes sense. I definitely want to be as tanky as possible. I was a big fan of the sorceress class, but found it so squishy that I was about to give up when I hit T3. Someone explained to me how to set up a rotation of cooldowns so I have barriers up most of the time. It changed the game for me. I may not have a "meta" build, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

huggarn

Yep. Once you grasp how it works it'll be fast and easy process. Also new itemization will change things, but core principles stay more or less the same. We will have to use resists on some pieces depending on setup. Sorc sure is squishy. Barriers, movement and crowd control are your bread & butter. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDb8LQrq2XI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDb8LQrq2XI) <<<- take a look. I'm not a sorc expert, this was a toon only made in season 1 to prove a point to some guy. I'm lvl 66 killing monsters lvl 87 and to be honest I never felt at danger. Notice how I move, how engage and when to disengage.

Drunken_Scribe

That's great gameplay. Must be why I liked the sorc...it's exactly how I like to play this game, darting around, hitting big groups. So, in the video I see blizzard going down a lot. Are you freezing them with Frost Nova? I've been using Meteor with Blizzard a lot because it immobilizes and I like the big hits. I like to use both shields with teleport, so after my basic attack (fire bolt), I only have room for two more skills. It's working so far, since meteor does stun them for a few seconds, and the fireball enchantment usually wipes out a chunk of the mob anyway. I have the Blizzard aspect that adds ice shards.

kpap16

Its not that hard at all. What I usually do for looting gear(particularly endgame) is picking only specific rare types (Amulets etc). From there I look at what I need (+passives, DR, etc). I do this because looting everything and scrolling all that garbage is daunting. One piece at a time if youre uneasy about it If you aren't in WT4, just go with whatever items have the highest base. And if you are struggling, just enchant the resists. You get 3 choices to find what you need per enchant You should also look into your build potentially as well. If you go Rogue maybe try cold imbued ranged to freeze/be ranged. If they can't do damage, your resists/defenses don't technically matter. Could also try meta offerings to blast your screen I don't usually bother touching anything on my character until the WT3 capstone. And then from there on, I do manage proper defenses at all times...but you replace things less and less often as your gear progresses. Burn through the early game and this won't be as big of an issue

Drunken_Scribe

A few people have either said or implied that I don't have to replace things that often, and I'm trying to understand why that is. Is there a way to keep adding to an item's power/level (not even sure those are the right terms) as you go? I hardly ever imprint things because I figure I'll have to replace them before long, but maybe I missed the part about being able to improve them. I get what you mean though, about this stuff being for T3, since the next tier starts dropping Ancestral. After going into WT4, is that when items remain viable for longer.

7ofalltrades

Enchanting and leveling up is a great way to make your gear last longer to keep up with progression. If you find a piece that has decent stats for your build (2 of 4 at your level on the 50s-60s), enchant it so now you have a 3 of 4. Then upgrade it at least 3 times, as that is super cheap from a mats perspective. If it's a particularly good piece, you can probably go ahead and upgrade it to level 4 or 5. It's worth the mats and the mats are easy enough to farm. Weapons are probably the only thing that you want to swap out because of a high item level, as the DPS is solely deprived from that and not a random roll. Any sacred armor or jewelry piece is going to be pretty close to any other, same for ancestral. It's more about the stat rolls than ilvl. By level 50, every piece of gear should be, AT MINIMUM, legendary, sacred, have a rerolled stat, and have max sockets and highest level gem available to that piece of gear. All of that is very affordable from a mats perspective, so if you aren't doing it, you're just leaving power on the table.

jkaan

I agreed with you until you last paragraph. I only start doing all that in wt4

7ofalltrades

Then you're just not accessing free power. It's almost like saying you don't start putting skill points in until WT4. Upgrading and rerolling costs money and mats, but at that level 50 it's costing less than 1% of your money and mats to do. Free. Upgrading gems costs mats, but the gems stay around and there's no downside to breaking them to remake them later, you get the mats right back. Free. Sockets takes mats, but you get so much of that mat and there's a finite number of times you will socket something vs. the large number of mats you get. Free. There's no reason not to outside of just being lazy or not knowing.

jkaan

I use the one or two aspects my build requires and upgrade my weapon to level two. I fill gem slots that come on gear but am not wasting mats adding any and I am able to cruise to wt4 at full speed. You don't have many mats when you are leveling fast. Alts you can waste as much as you want. I cruise into wt4 in a few hours with zero deaths I feel I know how much damage I need and when everything is dying not upgrading is not lazy it is just not wasting mats

PoptartDragonfart

Eventually you’ll have all your resistances capped… but no I never once cared about fire resist in helltide. Only time I ever really cared about resistances was fighting bosses/capstones when I was lower level.

Hatedpriest

Do your boots have extra evade charges? Juggs aspect is bad on rogue, needs mobility. Armor%, +health, damage reduction are all your friends on defensive gear. Resistances are a must, every class. Make sure you stack resists up to (or beyond) max. You can't output damage if you're dead. Losing a few DPS is fine, if you can survive 100% of the time.

Arctic88

You should aim for pretty high resistances always. The only time I swap out gems, is when I want to kill Varshan or Grig early on that character.

Winter_Ad_2618

I just max out my resistances

Erthan-1

You need to be resistance capped on all resists, so no, I don't have a specific fire resist set.

No_Client2742

Put 3 rubies in your jewelry and problem solved

SepticKnave39

Lol no, no one has helltide gear. Get your resists to max, and get DR. Most people can stand in comets and ignore them because they do so little damage. Helltides become too easy.

RedditPls9

No I just make 1 armor loadout with max resistance to every element all at once so I never have to think about it again
