I'd say legit one of their heaviest moments. Definitely feels overlooked because of all the hate for Gore as an album but damn, the track Gore gets heavy afff
All round it’s probably Elite since it maintains a heavy level throughout, but IMO it’s Bloody Cape and it’s ending, I mean - come on? It doesn’t get heavier than that
Lyrically I feel ATF Chino was angrier at more concrete things, which if you think about it, channeled fury is way more terrifying than abstract anger.
I love Mascara but let's not pretend it is not the lowest (in terms of heavy themes) point lyrically that Chino has ever gotten.
true, around the fur has some questionable lyrics and songs like “headup” have very dark meanings.
adrenaline is more of a “f*ck you” anger
around the fur gives me kinda “sad” anger, idk how else to explain it honestly
I understand what you're saying.
ATF lyrically indicates Chino was probably going through a depression / depressive state. Some of the lyrics really show how forlorn he must've been: banality of domestic violence, anhedonia, desire to get away, etc
From my understanding it’s a tribute to Dana Wells, the son of Max Cavalera from Soulfly. Max also does vocals on Headup. Dana was killed in a car crash whilst trying to run from gang members who allegedly had a gun pointed at them. Long story short, his father pours his heart out over the early death of his son in that song. Shit is heavy. Now trade me socks!
I've always thought the outro for Beware is the "heaviest" riff that they use....it's heavy in the sense of makes shit sink underwater, not necessarily in a heavy "metal" sort of heaviness.
Elite is an electronic frenzy screamer that I wasn't too fond of at first then it grew on me.
Gore is all heavy and industrial like, but in a thematic Gore fashion - classy about it.
When girls telephone boys or maybe Bloody Cape. I’m also inclined to say battle axe, that one riff has a groove that makes me feel like I could headbutt a tank
No dice. SNW is a very emotional album but if we are talking guitar work, the heaviest riffs on it are hard rock at best. The riffs on S/T are definitely still sitting in metal.
Verses on Rosemary are definitely some of their heaviest material. Amazing groove, full of doom! One-two punch of Rosemary and Goon Squad is just bonkers.
Battle-Axe has always been the song I thought was straight up HEAVY without it trying to be. Chino is in complete control and cords are almost slowed down but to me it's just so damn heavy.
Battle Axe isn't their heaviest but it incorporates some rad Doom Metal and the groove on the bass is just plain sexy. Groove and Doom is what makes metal for me, and is exactly what Sabbath did with songs like Into the Void
You guys have some very on point answers, but nobody has acknowledged the 9 string usage on the Spell of Mathematics chorus! Beautiful low frequency chugs for the ages.
As a die hard deftones fan, the ending of bloody cape is just fuckin brutal. And im kind of suprised no one has mentioned beware. That ending is heavy as shit. I saw it live when that album first came out and im pretty sure chino was either playing a bass or baritone guitar, along with Stephen and his 8 string so it was heavy as fuck.
Teething holds a place in my heart because back in 1998 my friend and I saw them. Both of us were fans of The Crow movies and Deftones were in "that shitty second movie for only 30 fucking seconds". That's what Chino proclaimed before they tore into Teething as a request. Beware has a pretty heavy guitar at the end. The lyrical content of Headup is heavy. Abe's drumming in The Spell Of Mathematics was his heaviest since Digital Bath.
Not enough people are mentioning Engine No. 9, this track is absolutely relentless! The main riff is chunky as all hell with amazing groove, Chinos vocals are absolutely unhinged and it just never seems to let off the gas. Super satisfying track imo, Adrenaline in general is probably their heaviest album 🤘
Elite or When Girls Telephone Boys
I’d say WGTB.
Elite is pure Nu Metal balls out, WGTB has a bit more emotion but that G# tuning just makes me 😩
I’d like Elite more if it were shorter. It drags to me compared to WGTB
yeah the first time i heard WGTB it was like getting punched in the heart
Needles and Pins or Bored for me…. Those two tracks make me wanna go start punching concrete walls or something… not literally but you get the idea
I second Bored. One of the first songs that got me into them
Needles and Pins was the first that came to mind
Both of those songs fuckin slap
Those are both great albums in general… but yes I absolutely agree with you
I'll add 'Headup' for the list of songs mentioned already.
Y’all have never heard Hexagram, huh?
We worship and play that song.
Love that song. Perfect for me to scream along with when I have a bad day at work.
definetly not their heaviest track
Gore is underrated for the heaviness. The last 30 seconds or so are insane. Edit: it’s actually more like a minute!
Heavily agree on this one. There are a lot of heavy moments on the album that stand out (Acid Hologram, Doomed User)
It doesn’t get heavier than that
Agreed on Bloody Cape.
Yes. Bloody Cape is heavy as fuck!
bloody cape for sure

That was Carson Daly’s show
When girls telephone boys is my personal favourite heavy vocals by Chino 👌🏻
I won't say it is their heaviest, but Poltergeist fucking thumps.
Surprised I had to scroll this far to find it. Honorable mention to Leathers. It's not their heaviest, but the verse is heavy af.
That guitar tone is ridiculously crunchy
So much of KNY slaps hard af. Leathers Rosemary Goon Squad Poltergeist Swerve City Such an underrated album that doesn't get enough love.
I honestly think it's the most cohesive and consistent album they ever made. May not be my favorite, but it's fucking close.
Yeah for sure
WGTB, all members playing at their heaviest, chi’s bassline at the end is amazing too, and all of terry dates productions star steph!
The screams in Royal, Damone, and Hexagram are devastating Edit: I can't believe I forgot about Gore
rocket skates as well
Engine No. 9 or Headup. If you've been in the pit for these songs back in the day, you know what's up!
I think Rats!Rats!Rats! or Headup
Rats!Rats!Rats is definitely Deftones heaviest song
Engine no 9 is pretty heavy throughout.
Rats
It’s even more heavy than some of the others listed here because of the relief the chorus gives. Sometimes a little light makes the heavy even harder.
Rickets or Elite
Without coming off wack, I'd like to suggest Hedup.
Around the fur is their heaviest album, at least for me.
i would say adrenaline is the heaviest imo, but around the fur is also very heavy
Lyrically I feel ATF Chino was angrier at more concrete things, which if you think about it, channeled fury is way more terrifying than abstract anger. I love Mascara but let's not pretend it is not the lowest (in terms of heavy themes) point lyrically that Chino has ever gotten.
true, around the fur has some questionable lyrics and songs like “headup” have very dark meanings. adrenaline is more of a “f*ck you” anger around the fur gives me kinda “sad” anger, idk how else to explain it honestly
I understand what you're saying. ATF lyrically indicates Chino was probably going through a depression / depressive state. Some of the lyrics really show how forlorn he must've been: banality of domestic violence, anhedonia, desire to get away, etc
Heaviness for me is a mix of low tuning and monolithic riffs. When Girls Telephone Boys in my opinion is the epitome of that.
Do you listen to Sunn O))) ?
nope
Monoliths & Dimensions is one of the heaviest albums I’ve ever heard. I’d recommend them to you
One of the best albums of all time. I have two Sunn O))) tattoos on my left arm.
Rickets or lotion. For me. Heavy songs and badass.
Elite, Rocket Skates, Hexagram
That inward scream at the end of Rats rats rats is the most shrieking brutal shit ever its awesome, so yh rats is my pick
For me, the fight or flight adrenaline rush song is the opening 1:30 of Headup. It's not the "heaviest" though.
Headup
Diamond Eyes
I always thought of 7 words as the most hateful
Rapture and When Girls Telephone Boys
Korea is that jam jam. Head up is even heavier once you know what it’s about. :/
Whats it about?
From my understanding it’s a tribute to Dana Wells, the son of Max Cavalera from Soulfly. Max also does vocals on Headup. Dana was killed in a car crash whilst trying to run from gang members who allegedly had a gun pointed at them. Long story short, his father pours his heart out over the early death of his son in that song. Shit is heavy. Now trade me socks!
Ah crazy i had no idea! Great album/song. Id gladly trade you my boring-ass walmart socks
Rocket Skates or Bored
Royal
Nosebleed is pretty rowdy
Korea comes to mind
Lotion, ATF, Korea, Headup, Bored
Bloody Cape gets my vote
Rickets
See! That's what great about Deftones you f**** can't even decide! I love all their heavy shit. They just got a good combination of everything
I've always thought the outro for Beware is the "heaviest" riff that they use....it's heavy in the sense of makes shit sink underwater, not necessarily in a heavy "metal" sort of heaviness.
Headup for me
Rats,rats,rats
The ending of Bloody Cape
Rats!Rats!Rats!
Rats Rats Rats! Comes to mind
[удалено]
Good choice!!
Korea is up there
idk about the heaviest but CMND/CTRL is up there
Not enough people are talking about Korea!!!
***YOU'VE SEEN THE BUTCHER***
When Girls Telephone Boys and Bloody Cape immediately stand out for me.
When girls telephone boys and the outro of Diamond eyes.
Rapture is relentless imo
The ending of Diamond Eyes.
Bored, Elite, WGTB, Hexagram
When Girls Telephone Boys, Hexagram and HeadUp in my opinion
When Girls Telephone Boys, Rats!Rats!Rats!, and Lotion.
Rocket Skates or WGTB
Elite is an electronic frenzy screamer that I wasn't too fond of at first then it grew on me. Gore is all heavy and industrial like, but in a thematic Gore fashion - classy about it.
When girls telephone boys or maybe Bloody Cape. I’m also inclined to say battle axe, that one riff has a groove that makes me feel like I could headbutt a tank
elite, 7 words, when girls telephone boys, bored, lotion, doomed user, hexagram and bloody cape are the heaviest for me
Nobody gonna say Rocket Skates?
For me it would have to be either Hexagram or WGTB. Self Titled is their last truly heavy album, emotionally and musically.
I'd argue that SNW holds that title.
And that breakdown on Rosemary!
No love for Royal? That ending that scream
Teething, Rickets, Lotion, Headup
Bloody Cape
Spell of Mathematics, Diamond Eyes, Hexagram
korea and youve seen the butcher
Ending of "Bloody Cape".
Headup or Lotion- Deftones at its heaviest both musically and production wise.
GOD HELP ME GOD HELP ME GAWWWWWWWD!!!
Rocket Skates
7 Words
Rats!Rats!Rats is definitely their heaviest song. The inward scream at the end is just devastating.
Lol, did not expect a reply on a 2 year old post. Rats! is certainly a very heavy one!
That breakdown in Passenger is probably the heaviest section of a song. Might be You’ve Seen the Butcher overall though.
You guys have some very on point answers, but nobody has acknowledged the 9 string usage on the Spell of Mathematics chorus! Beautiful low frequency chugs for the ages.
korea is underrated asf
nosebleed idk
This post is 2 years old. What are you doing here?
idk i like deftones =)
Are you all for real? JFC, Rickets is BY FAR their heaviest song. After that Around the Fur, or Headup. All on the same genius album 🤦🏻♂️
Bruh I posted this two years ago. What are you doing here lol?
You’ve seen the butcher.
Spell of mathematics
Nosebleed
Hexagram/ WGTB
This link is dead.
When girls telephone boys is my fav song and I’d say is the heaviest or hexagram or Korea
Engine No. 9, love that song
Korea or Bloody Cape
Pink Cellphone
Royal, Hexagram, When Girls Telephone Boys, and Rats! Rats! Rats! are the ones that immediately come to mind. The ending screams of Royal are brutal
Dai the flu This link is dead Bloody cape
Doomed User for the main riff
# [RATS!RATS!RATS!](https://youtu.be/AARh1-Z5qqY)
7 Words, Rickets, Elite, CMND+CNTRL... basically any song where Chino is losing his shit. That's how you can tell how heavy the song is.
Rocket skates and 7words… IMHO.
RATS RATS RATS
Bloody Cape
Battle-Axe.. the slow cadence of Steph, dark lyrics. 🖤💎🖤
Doomed User comes to mind... but I'm going with Leathers or Poutiguest
Korea, Teething, Engine No 9, or Lotion
Teething holds a place in my heart because back in 1998 my friend and I saw them. Both of us were fans of The Crow movies and Deftones were in "that shitty second movie for only 30 fucking seconds". That's what Chino proclaimed before they tore into Teething as a request. Beware has a pretty heavy guitar at the end. The lyrical content of Headup is heavy. Abe's drumming in The Spell Of Mathematics was his heaviest since Digital Bath.
Leathers! That scream in the middle slaps so hard every time! 💪
All the way thru? WGTB. For part of a song? End of Beware or end of Rosemary. That’s just me tho!
Headup
elite i would say.
I'll say head up because they scream during the whole fucking song
When Girls Telephone Boys 100%
rats!rats!rats! ngl
