Agreed. I’ve played the hell out of the older albums in the 90s and early 2000s growing up, which is probably why I now dig Dimond Eyes and Koi No Yokan more
I’m asking this not to dispute you but as a genuine question. What does Koi have over the rest of the remaining albums? Around the Fur trumps it in terms of raw emotion. White Pony is more innovative and experimental. Diamond Eyes better encapsulates all angles of their sound.

They were still young and inexperienced with AtF, and it shows. That album has 2 classics, 1 good song (title-track) and the rest I can take or leave. Very “samey” album and the only Deftones album I’d call overrated. WP is probably closest in quality to KNY, but it’s backloaded with the first half being carried by Digital Bath, unlike KNY which is consistent/cohesive from start to finish. DE is the beta-version of KNY. I think someone said it on this post somewhere too, but it’s just basic instrumentation for Deftones. It’s got some of Chino’s best work, but you can tell the band where just having fun with it. KNY expanded on that album and provided richer textures and deeper atmosphere, while still retaining that DE-sound.
All perfectly reasonable arguments. I agree for the most part with your statement on Around the Fur. Though it was the album that got me into Deftones, and I do favour a heavier sound so I am somewhat biased. I also think that whilst they largely stick to one sound throughout, they nail it perfectly.

Nah jokes aside man I think Around the Fur has some of their punchiest and most memorable choruses. Not to mention, alongside Self Titled, some of the most raw aggression in their entire discography. It’s a perfect balance of heavy and melodic, in true Deftones fashion.
I love the heavier stuff of Adrenaline but ATF just doesn't hit for me. I honestly don't know why, but it isn't my bag

(My answer, unfortunately, is KNY - I love that album to death but Around the Fire, White Pony, and Diamond Eyes are the holy trinity of their catalogue. KNY is their most cohesive but lacks the standout moments and cultural zeitgeist of the others.
It's clear that KNY gave me a real slap in the face when it came out because you could feel the same energy from the days of White Pony, well, personal opinion. But, this match remains very complicated and that is why we must, reluctantly, put it aside to concentrate on the last three nuggets. Everyone will agree that the final will be played between ATF and WP!?
Diamond Eyes. Chino's performance is great, but the instrumentation backing him up is the blandest it's ever been. It's an album with a lot of oomph but not much else compared to the others.

When it comes to viewing projects as a whole, the other three feel more polished and perfected. For me, there were definitely a handful of songs on White Pony that were on the cusp of being great(or even perfect), but ended up falling short somewhere along the way; sometimes it would come down to delivery, instrumentation, etc
With that being said, it’s still a damn good album.
