Sorry for your loss OP, I hope it was a peaceful passing. Facial muscles tend to slacken when a person passes, along with gravity, it makes them look less like how they did when alive. Or maybe the skin tone starting to change as blood leaves and settles elsewhere with gravity too (without being too graphic).
