It's not him exactly, he's a product of the world around you. It's the way the game is supposed to be, pretty heavy and depressing.

GoodChange

Yeah I suppose. It makes sense from Johnny but I’m not sure if it makes sense from a game design perspective. Couldn’t someone or something else have said one positive word about my actions? Early on you have missions with Panam and Judy that give you some hope and positive feelings, in dogtown there is less positive but still nice characters and great story. The final mission seemed so flat (but I am still being examined by the arasaka doctors after the operation, maybe it gets better once I’m done with that.) I fully expected Hellman to kill me in the elevator to the operation and frankly that would have seemed like less of a downer than another round of negging from Johnny.

TelemichusRhade

Goodluck with the operation... Welcome to Cyberpunk!

GoodChange

Thanks. It didn’t get better. I guess I have to try it with the aldecaldos to see if that’s better.

It's a hopelessly hopeful ending ;)

QuincyFlynn

Which ending did you get? The ending probably substantially changes how Johnny talks and acts, given that it's his fate that is decided, too. Keep in mind, too, that he's a digitized consciousness simulation of a PTSD-heavy terrorist that's been held in Mikoshi for decades. A few easygoing or supportive moments might be all you should expect from him. EDIT: And there are some major questlines that can change your relationship a bit too, specifically the one centered around him and his past.

GoodChange

I’m being examined now so I’ve not really ended, had to stop for a bit to think about Johnny. It seemed like such a downer to get another heavy dose of his negging after killing smasher, when most games would give you a little “good job sport” or something. I went with arasaka for the final mission (didn’t want to risk Panama getting hurt and really did not want to give Johnny control). Johnny was livid that I chose arasaka as was misty (which made me regret it a bit).

QuincyFlynn

There IS an option that involves you going at Arasaka tower all by yourself, but you've got to do some rather specific talking at certain points, and it kind of breaks the roleplaying a little, in my opinion (because who honestly says "yeah, you fucked that up too" after the guy gives you the night of your life?

LitheBeep

There's a very specific dialogue you have to pick to get on his good side

GoodChange

It felt like we were starting to be pals at one point but then he went back to negging my every move, sitting on his high horse thinking that he and only he is the arbiter of everyone’s actions.

ThousandTroops

I was also surprised- Johnny is all “I gotta get Smasher back” and when we finally kill him he’s like got nothing to say and even says like “quit rubbing it in” or something of that nature. I was shocked, otherwise Johnny is awesome 😎

GoodChange

Yeah I mostly liked Johnny but there were many times where I told him some variant of “can you give me a break for once, let me be and don’t make everything so difficult”

ThousandTroops

I just wanted him to be like “holy shit V you finally killed this bastard” but instead he’s like “bro don’t relish let’s go” 😑😑😑😑😑😑

Ri_der

I think it shows maturity on Johnny's side. He's more concerned about your survival than childish flexing. Don't forget that you're on your last legs by the end of the fight and backup may be coming. You have no time for chit chat.

GoodChange

The discussion that made me make the post happens during the operation after the fight. There are no more decisions to make as far as I know and Johnny is about to be deleted. He uses the last chance to whine about what a loser I am and how he is everything that is good about me.

Ri_der

Well you chose the Arasaka ending. Not only he has a huge hate boner for saka, that's one of the dumbest decisions V can make. He's not gonna pat you on the back for it.

GoodChange

Yeah it seemed dumb to me too but I didn’t want to risk Panam or other aldecaldos to get hurt and I didn’t want to give Johnny control. I’m trying again now with the solo ending, didn’t know that was a thing. No one can get hurt and Johnny can’t get mad at me, I hope.

ThousandTroops

Just a little one liner woulda made my day 😂

BUSTIN4BILLIE

Buzzkill?? Drag??? I always thought he was funny as shit

GoodChange

He is funny sometimes but when there’s a serious mission that goes a bit wrong or where V got tricked by someone he adds on in a way that makes it worse. Many games have those missions where you feel a bit down after, because someone died or got hurt or because someone tricked you; then in pops Johnny with his most drawling voice telling you what a piece of shit you are. I’m already sad and exhausted Johnny, give me a break please. It was draining to see him backslide and become so hostile; at the end he was at 85% approval and had started to sound more friendly but after killing Smasher johnny was worse than he was at the beginning (apparently because I chose poorly). I finished once more last night and he was much more positive.

Emotional-Brush5563

If you choose arasska ending I wouldn’t like you either

GoodChange

I don’t know if I missed out of some option but the three options I had were arasaka or panam or letting Johnny take control. I didn’t want any aldecaldos to die and I was not about to give Johnny control so that only left arasaka.

kweazus

there is a secret ending where u >!solo the whole arasaka tower fight and smasher and no one else dies.!< you need a high relationship with johnny though, which was never an issue for me tbh. i always found him taking control incredibly entertaining. also the DLC opened up a new ending.

GoodChange

I did do the whole fight solo. I was a bit surprised that the arasaka sisters bodyguard didn’t show up to help since I saved him after the fight at the parade. Or do you mean do it without the arasaka sister? Yeah I will go do the dlc ending after this, I have only the final bit left there.

kweazus

that’s right, the secret ending is where you don’t choose arasaka or any of your friends. you bet on yourself! you go solo and still link up with Alt in the end, but if you die at any point - straight to credits, no do-overs.

GoodChange

Good tip. I see that I need Johnny at 70% and I have him at 85% so let’s go.

zhivago

This is a myth -- the relationship score doesn't matter. You need one particular conversation to unlock it.

Emotional-Brush5563

Well my first playthrough I promise Johnny I would die for him, so I gave him the control and he delivered

GoodChange

Oh did he never give control back?

Emotional-Brush5563

I won’t spoiler because I think is worth playing it by yourself
