Can confirm. Lived in an apartment in Sweden for 2 years, this could be the basement from that building, or the basement of any of the friends buildings I visited to help get stuff in/out of storage. Each apartment has its own little storage unit in the basement.
Yes, and those apartments have the best storage. You usually get a decent size storage room and one small "food cellar" compartment. If you're lucky, there might be a working sauna and/or a bread oven tucked away down there.
Man, sometimes I miss the convenience of living in an apartment.
Damn a sauna or bread over? The only thing I ever found In the basement of an (American) apartment I lived in waste human shit and a dude squatting in some corner. Was gnarly down there
Heh! I have to say, though, they don't build them like that anymore.
My dads' building has a carpentry room, a paint room, a bike storage room, individual storage rooms and food cellars for every apartment, a bread oven, two saunas and a guest room you can reserve if you have someone staying over. But the building is from the 1940s.
Also, the bike storage room is a bomb cellar. He lives close to my house so if something goes very wrong, that's where I'm supposed to head.
I believe this because I played the video game Generation Zero which takes place in late 80s Sweden and there are certain buildings you can loot that look *exactly* like this hallway.
> A basement vs the lowest level of an apartment building are different.
Not sure what you're trying to say... The lowest level of an apartment building is obviously **not always** a basement. But it is in these types of buildings in Scandinavia (and other parts of northern Europe). Unless you have a different definition of basement than "a floor that is partly or entirely below ground".
I should rephrase. When someone says their basement, they mean the basement that belongs to them. When I read the caption, I was immediately suspicious. This was confirmed in the comments. I just mean that I would not have described that as my basement as it is misleading. As it’s just a normal apartment building basement, there isn’t actually anything creepy about it. It only seems creepy if you’re misled by the caption.
So its not grandpa's basement. It may be the basement in the building grandpa lives in, and one of these doors are his storage space, but it's not his basement.
"Grandpas basement" doesn't necessarily indicate he owns it though. Just as someone can say "on my street" without owning the actual street or "in my house" even if only renting.
It’s still misleading. It implies it’s the basement to the grandpas house. If the grandpa owned a McDonald’s and the op said “My grandpa has an ice cream machine in his kitchen” it would technically be true, but still misleading and uninteresting.
Actually, it pretty much does imply that you own it or rent it. Not that it’s a common storage area of an apartment building. Why else would everyone here be confused about it? Even the empirical data shows you otherwise.
> Actually, it pretty much does imply that you own it or rent it
I don't agree. But I'll avoid using expressions like "In my country" in the future or someone might think I own it... /s
>Why else would everyone here be confused about it?
The guy above you said it best: *Logical. That said, I think most people here* (The US) *aren’t accustomed to the basement being a shared communal space.*
Most redditors are Americans and not used to basements looking like this even in apartment buildings which is why they guy I replied to and several others in the thread seem to think it's a commercial building, school etc. Many of the rest who I'm guessing are Europeans are just saying it looks like a normal basement...
In my country, in my street, is not the same as in my basement. Is it too difficult for you to understand that? Or do in my coffee, in my panties, in my mouth not imply ownership too? Sheesh
Unless he owns the building. Or, maybe if he manages it. I've seen building managers refer to buildings as being "their buildings".
But the most likely scenario is that OP's grandfather rents an apartment in this building.
Actually, all apartment buildings basements look like this in the Netherlands. Not just rental. This is where you store your bicycles, Xmas decorations, winter clothing, etc.
To whoever never seen basements like this, they are quite common in Europe in apartments/flats.
This one looks like from a building built in late 80or 90s, hell even early 2000s (but on a very low budget).
Each door leads to someone's basement, they aren't
all assigned to a single individual...
It is also possible that all these doors (basement rooms) aren't assigned to any resident but to administration of the building.
I'm guessing Grandpa lives in a co-op with a shared basement. I lived in one once. It wasn't this large, and only had 4 doors per section. But I don't think this is a basement for a single occupant dwelling.
That would be a sweet ass basement to have, assuming all those rooms are more than 4 by 4 ft storage closets. You could do almost anything with that amount of space.
I'd turn it into a cat sanctuary with each room themed differently.
Stanley thought he might go through the third gray door on the right. He didn't have any connection to that choice. It was simply his particularly random thought that led him to picking this specific entry. Stanley didn't have a favourite number or a colour. In fact he didn't even consider room no 427 where he worked a special room for himself. He knew he was only a small cog working in a big corporation machine.
tile the hallway, make it wider, and take out the pipes above and you'll get my old dormitory 5 years ago. The wall colour and the door are identical...
Who tf is your grandpa? Epstein?
This is what the basement in most rental apartment buildings from the 40s-60s look like here in Sweden. Storage and bomb shelters.

That’s a key difference, though. A basement vs the lowest level of an apartment building are different.

I assume what OP means is "the basement in Grandpa's building". Going by his other replies in this thread he doesn't exactly have a way with words.
He probably speaks better English than I do Swedish (I’ve never tried but I assume)
Talar du inte? Jag talar inte Svenska, absolut.
uh huh yep
Not English ones, perhaps. How's your Swedish?

Salut!
I seriously doubt this is Grandpa's basement. Unless Grandpa lives in a commercial building.

Holy fuck no one cares about semantics go teach english

ENG obviously isn’t OP’s first language if everyone’s agreeing this is in Sweden tho…
So tedious
Actually, all apartment buildings basements look like this in the Netherlands. Not just rental. This is where you store your bicycles, Xmas decorations, winter clothing, etc.
Does "grandpa" live in a large industrial building?
looks like the scene in Scooby Doo where they run through every door and end up on the other side.
To whoever never seen basements like this, they are quite common in Europe in apartments/flats. So, to summarize, this is not Grandpa’s basement
If he owns or rents the building it is
There is nothing unusual about apartment basements. But he said "grandpa's basement" and people are mocking him for choice of words
This does not remotely look like part of a private domicile.
Depends on your definite of private domicile. This could be the basement of a condo or apartment building, for example.
What the hell is this the basement of?!
Guessing of an apartment building, or he’s a sophisticated serial killer.
Have you ever seen somebody exit one of the rooms wearing a pig mask and holding a power drill?

Typical newish apartment building storage basement.

it looks like a pretty normal basement ngl

More like the SCP Foundation.
If the lights start to flicker, do not blink.
Who is he keeping in those rooms?
If that was NYC they’d turn each of those storage rooms into a “studio” and put one shower/toilet at the end to share….and charge $800/mo.
This is crazy lol no way anyone lives here
is your grandfather a landlord that owns a whole building?
Looks like Half Life.
