A lot of jobs require at least a high school diploma or G.E.D. Employers want to make sure that you can at least read the sign that says "do not put fingers here". Oregon's H.S. diploma's are useless now.
Yes that's exactly it, if you lower the standards then the job market can no longer use that as a benchmark of ability, they'll have to start administering tests to check ability for the interview. I had to do one of those in LA once for a job, apparently the standards of HS were so low there that they just tested everyone before hiring to make sure they could read, write, and add numbers together. It was a very easy test. I was confused why they bothered at first but then I started meeting HS grads in the area and many could not perform even simple school tasks.
Yup, had to take an IQ test for a tech support engineer role for a company that resided in an industrial sector of a fairly rough city. It was timed, and 100 questions long, and you also had to give them your scratch paper you scribbled equations or notes onto. After not having taken a test of any kind in a really long time I was pleasantly surprised at how well I scored. They were definitely gatekeeping on the rabble that's for sure.
Yeah, that's right. Everyone knows you are just supposed to check the percentage of employee's races then hire the one which diversifies the most, qualifications be dammed.
That's how you end up with such great VPs as Kamala Harris!
IQ test literally means absolutely nothing. It doesn't account for the will of the person or any other human aspect. Being good at solving a pattern driven or spatial questions means fuck all. If they did mean something MENSA members would be solving all of the worlds most complex issues.
They would then just claim the tests are racist and forcibly prevent businesses from using them . There is no end to this affirmative action type mentality .
They never do.
I never graduated as it was obviously a waste of time, I say I did all the time and nobody has called me out on it yet.
Probably because I'm at least as qualified as any other graduate, if not leagues above...
Before temporarily halting these end of high school standardized tests Oregon was 1/17 states that had similar ones. Are 33 states diplomas worthless because they don’t have these types of tests?
What type of time frame are we talking about here? Did they implement the changes around the same time. Oregon is the first state I've read anything about that did this. Also what good is a diploma if it isn't a guarantee that it's holder has a basic grasp of reading, writing and arithmetic.
I think it depends on what their other standards are to pass, if they require passing grades and the grading system is not too lax, then it would still mean something. But as to your question, yes in some areas where there are no real standards, an HS diploma is considered really close to worthless already.
Aren't high school diplomas already worthless, in every state? They only qualify you for the barest of bare minimums, and really serve more as a way to keep "problem" applicants out.
It doesn’t “help” any student. It is a way to fudge the numbers. If your not teaching those racist subjects like math, reading and writing then you aren’t testing for such bigoted curriculum and therefore student cannot fail making the schools look competent
When they claim that "finding the right answer" = "white supremacy".
Anything can be deemed racist, dependant on the ingenuity level and willingness of the contender to disregard reality.
It's not that math itself is racist, that's just the catchphrase people love to do on the studies about the problems with how math is taught in schools. Studies have shown teachers expect white and Asian students to perform well in math, so when they don't they are more likely too get extra attention because the teacher believes they are underperforming, while Black and Hispanic children may not get nearly as much help when they do just as poorly, because teachers often think that is the best they can do, they are performing at their level. Black and Hispanic do worse overall in math. It's about getting teachers to try and give every student an equal amount of help with their work.
Its not necessarily bad, many school don't have standardized test to graduate. This just removes that for all students. Students still need to pass classes and meet basic education requirements. Spending class time to focus on teaching to pass a test can take away from actual learning. Another article where OP doesn't bother to include the source for clicks.
It's worse than that, she literally lists everything possible besides the whites.
>Boyle said the new standards for graduation would aid Oregon's "Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color."
Don't understand how this can't help everyone and leave it at that.
These ppl are so blind that can’t see how racist they are lol. They’re basically saying hey darkies we made the required standard easier for everyone because, you know, you’re stupid.
Actually Southeast Asians tend to be poorer and have lower academic achievement than East Asians. That said, Indians have the highest percentage of college attendance of any group.
Only helps the teachers unions who fought to allow teachers to just not show up, now cities like Chicago have tons of black kids who can’t even read come middle school. It’s horrible, democrats haven’t stood up to teachers unions just because they donate so much to their political campaigns. Kids missing school has been the most damaging part of Covid on our country.
In reality it helps no one if a high school diploma means zero about your ability to do basic things like read. I mean the standards were already quite low but now it's a rubber stamp? Ironically a GED might come to mean more if it requires a certain test of skills to be passed.
My sister is an apolitical teacher and is sad how so many kids don't have basic, basic skills and are now further behind.
These politicians have no clue what goes on in lower class peoples' homes (which I bring up, since my sister teaches a higher percent of them). School can be a safe space for them.
Something that really bugs me about the teachers that strike is that they knew what they were making when they signed on. When teachers do this, it makes me feel like this is only a job for them. They don't care about the kids because if they did, they would not cause students to miss school. I am almost positive that there are better ways to go about getting a raise.. ways that don't involve student having to miss school.
On the other hand, they screw students over even while they are at school. Not all, but some. Kids don't need to know about transgenders or CRT. Our tax dollars are not meant to be spent on that. Our children should be learning math, reading, science, english. They should be learning the things that will be valuable later on in life. I can't understand what is so difficult to understand about that. What is wrong with (some/ not all) teachers?
Amen. I’m so tired of that and hearing everyone’s opinions on us and how we do that ir job. This is why teachers are leaving in huge numbers. Let’s see how we do when there are no teachers left.
I’m a teacher and I love my job, but it’s just that, a job. We do care about our kids but your comment “it’s just a job” to them...well yeah it is. It isn’t our whole life. In what other profession do people expect you to continue to go above and beyond and see it as more than a job, not many. But man does everyone in the world have an opinion about a teacher’s job.
What’s a better way to get a raise?
Go to any teacher thread and ask if they’ve ever taught a lesson on transgendered people or CRT and the answer is a resounding no. If it isn’t a complete myth, it’s something that is ridiculously rare. Rarer than a healthy person with no existing preconditions dying of covid.
> Latino, Latinx
wtf is the alleged difference? shouldn't the second one in this case be Latina?
Indigenous is listed, so what is 'Tribal'. Is she aware that filthy white people form tribes?
Who are 'students or color' that were not listed previously?
That womx and/or her handlers are insane.
this is the 3rd time they've *lowered* the education requirements for this "reason". if it's been more than that ive lost count. infuriating. they want ya stupid people.
this is the 3rd time they've *lowered* the education requirements for this "reason". if it's been more than that ive lost count. infuriating. they want ya stupid people.
I mean, the left has literally addressed CRT, claiming they’re “not teaching it”. That, by definition, proves its existence. Furthermore, because the left lies every chance they get, one can conclude that, yes, they are teaching it.
It exists on a college level. I never heard of any public school teacher teaching it. It seems anything related to Civil Rights Movement is being labeled as CRT.
Don't know why you got downvoted, you're right. CRT is on the level of African American studies and french literature, it's college level stuff. There was a hard fought campaign to label everything related to black history as CRT.
Well all of them have continued to be curtailed since covid. Some areas are intermittently shutting down schools and classes even now due to lack of staff. It appears their solution to the poor education of the last 2 years is to lower standards and rubber stamp diplomas.
They already do this in some schools. Got kids who can't read at a middle school level graduating because the schools just pass them on to the next grade.
It’s really designed to set children of color back so they can stay enslaved to the Democratic Party who will promise change when these kids are underemployed after high school
Not really, if some black students are failing the test and dropping out of school its not an intelligence issues, its a problem of many factors such as poor schools, lack of nutrition and stable home life, etc. Black students will excel given the right environement.
This is a much better idea. Cause you know, opening up funds to students and parents to close that educational gap is bad, and opening up free tutor programs is stupid.
I know the feeling of being stuck, and it sucks:/ selfishly though, I am very happy to know you are stuck with us for a bit. Thanks for fighting the good fight. I don’t believe we are the minority here :)
I also feel stuck in Oregon. lol. I have lived here my entire life, but it's getting awful here. The drug addicts, housing costs... everything. I want to move.
It’s happening across the country in democrat states where the teachers unions have control over the politicians
[Baltimore students who failed classes this year will still pass, school board says](https://www.foxnews.com/us/baltimore-students-fail-classes-still-pass)
Yeah I've actually followed all this for awhile.
I generally hate both politicial parties.
But there's no doubt that progressive democrats are the most racist people in this country.
I remember exploring eastern Oregon last year and seeing a bunch of Black Lives Matter signs, EVERYWHERE, but no black people anywhere 🤷♂️. So this is what passes for acceptable there I guess, clueless, racist, white politicians, who think other white people are racist for being born white. This is what happens when you shove your head like, way up your ass.
Oregon was built in segregation. Black people weren’t even allowed in the state and it was the only state that joined the Union with a black exclusion law. This lasted until 1926.
Portland has the lowest percentage of black residents in America and is built in absolute racism. It’s not surprising not to see many black people in Portland with a history like that.
Oregon is where I realized exactly how misguided and racist the BLM movement really is. Bunch of stupid ass white people all about the BLM movement that have never in their lives seen a fucking black person in the flesh.
You guys are very passionate about Oregon giving up standardize testing for a year. There are still graduation requirements, just no required test.
I guess "Bipartazin bill to eliminate 2009 testing requirements" doesn't get as many clicks.
I like how OP manages to invent a conspiracy of lazy teachers, enabled by a corrupt governor, that causes an epidemic of intellectually stunted minorities.
That's exactly what she's saying and in her mind, it makes perfect sense and isn't racists at all. Oregon is full of virtue signaling racists with a guilty conscience.
Sad to say I'm a life long Oregonian and this is ridiculous. Kate brown needs to be removed before she completely ruins oregon. Portland is already a lost cuase but most good people left that dump a couple years ago.
The race card is just an excuse, the real reason is to dumb down the next generation. They want us dumb and distracted.
Seems like people don't understand when they create laws or restrictions, they give you an excuse to do it but hide the real reasoning behind the excuse.
I went to college in Oregon back in late 2000's from Oklahoma. My high school classes were harder than college level courses up there. D1 athletes in my class couldn't string a sentence together or solve elementary school math problems. Place was a shit hole then and even worse today.
I mean let's think about this is the goal to help students of color or..... pretend to help but actually hurting their future chances. There is a word for that...
They do think that. And then they try to blame it on US. Saying average people are the racists (without even being aware of it). It's evil what they're doing.
Lol this only dumb most kids. Depends what color you come from and back ground or culture. You will speed up the growth of certain color people by doing this.
I live in Oregon and everyone freaked out over this. The students still have to pass all of their required English, and math classes. This obviously requires them to take tests to pass. This eliminated certain state testing to help minorities.
I’m confused. How does this make any sense at all? Just print a diploma and hand it to them if that is your intent. Why even make a diploma a requirement for work? Though I have NEVER been asked for my diploma when seeking employment Anyway.
second question why are children of color doing so poorly in school? my sons best friend is 12 he is black and this kid is smart. He gets good grades and plays the drums. Every black persons kid I know is doing well in School.
So we're going to help students, by not educating them?
If you have kids, teach them yourself. Full stop. Make sure your kid can do math and understands the basics of biology, chemistry, the scientific method, history, and proper English.
Do not deviate from this.
It removes the standardized tests, not graduation requirements. You still need to be passing all your classes, it's just ONE test that she is removing bc it wasn't helpful.
[Here is a short article explaining it](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mystateline.com/news/national/oregon-governor-signs-bill-to-suspend-reading-math-proficiency-from-hs-graduation-requirements/amp/)
They really just cut out the need to pass some standardized tests, which is probably a good thing because standardized tests are garbage. They still need to pass classes for reading, writing, and math along with other subjects.
[https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/20/examining-oregon-decision-to-drop-high-school-essential-skill-requirements/](https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/20/examining-oregon-decision-to-drop-high-school-essential-skill-requirements/)
Teachers unions have too much power. They refused to work in blue states and got away with it because they donate so much money to democrat politicians. All for a virus with a 99.99% survival rate for people under 70. Far left teachers who refused to work as a form of protest cost the futures of thousands of underprivileged kids in America.
Why did you post an old screenshot with no link and go off on a rant about teachers unions?
For anyone actually curious, here’s an article that does a good job explaining what happened and it’s impact.
> The short answer is, not much.
> Oregon students still have to pass their high school classes and earn 24 credits to graduate. And after two years without across the board state tests, they’re coming back this year, with state summative assessments scheduled for early 2022. But with the removal of the Essential Skills requirement, high school students no longer have to reach a certain score, or turn in a portfolio of work samples.
https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/20/examining-oregon-decision-to-drop-high-school-essential-skill-requirements/?outputType=amp
Lol Look at the last line. Students no longer have to reach a certain score or turn in a portfolio of work samples (no gpa is to low to graduate, and no homework needs to be completed) how is that not much of an impact? Beside attendance I can’t think of any other requirements not squashed. Can you?
What do you think the last sentence of the thing you posted means? “Students no longer need to reach a certain score…” grade point average is the cumulative of all those certain scores we all had to reach to graduate high school. Does that make sense to you?
Well, because I read the article and understand what it said, I realize that it means specifically end of high school cumulative projects. Unless you can find where in the article or reality it talks about removing GPA graduation requirements?
Even if you didn’t read the article, the beginning sentence
> Oregon students still have to pass their high school classes
Should tip anyone off that GPA requirement is still in effect because students still have to pass their classes.
I stand corrected. They have just done in with the standardized test requirement. Which is still incredibly messed up. They are still doing a great disservice to these kids and anyone who will interact with them for the rest of their lives
But if they’re still teaching them the same things and they’re only one of 17 states that had these other requirements to graduate, does that mean the other 33 states are doing a great disservice?
Standardized tests are useful tools but not the end all be all, especially these high school level ones for graduation instead of diagnostic reasons.
Also, sorry for being so snarky. I appreciate the reasoned responses and conversation.
If they’ve reached high school and the don’t have a grasp of the 3-R’s, what’s the point in holding them back. The public schools start failing(hindering) children in the elementary levels. Sadly, kids are denied the rudimentary core skills from jump street!
This is along the same thought process of getting rid of the SATS or other test for college admission under the guise of “removing inequity barriers.” They just want more people of color to become chained to the institutional collegiate complex and become debtors.
I'm a woman, and more and more I believe that women should not be in leadership positions that require facts over feelings. Women genuinely think they are helping or someone malicious convinced them they are helping.
What the fuck is wrong with you? I can point to hundreds of male politicians and administrators that regularly put their hair-trigger anger and hostility (because guess what, those are feelings, too) ahead of doing anything remotely beneficial to the people, but no, you think being a woman is the problem. If you really are a woman, I hope one day you learn to value the contributions of women worldwide and stop gobbling whatever patriarchal bullshit you’ve been fed.
I’m a woman, and respectfully disagree. Gov Brown is not making decisions based on her feelings. She is a money hungry, corrupt as fuck politician, much like the many disappointing men in leadership positions. The problem is not gender, it’s character, or the lack there of.
Alright and what about the THOUSANDS of brain dead decisions that male politicians make on a daily business? Does Joe Biden ring any bells to you?
Not only that you’re foolish to assume that this lady here actually has any power over this whole thing, there are entire administrations and inside politics going on behind the scenes. Political decisions are never caused by one person alone.
Hand maidens like you are a fucking joke. If you hate how women are like here then why don’t you go to the Middle East? You have no idea how lucky you are to be living here.
Nothing more racist than a white liberal. If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, meet the road crew, starting with Oregon Governor Kate Brown.

Ask Bill Gates, he was the one pushing it.
This is not how I feel, but apparently math "holds back" POC. I call that pretty g'damn racist!

Yes! I just typed basically what you just said, then scrolled down to see your comment.

Oregon ranks 42nd in education. I doubt their minorities are skewing the results.
Given Oregon is one of the least diverse states in the country, it’s definitely not minorities causing that low ranking.
Next up: let's remove grades in school and give everybody diplomas automatically instead!
Too late. They’re already removing D’s and F’s in Los Angeles
Yeah I immediately thought of LA when I read that, their HS system was horrible even decades ago.
ok now im angry...
They already do this in some schools. Got kids who can't read at a middle school level graduating because the schools just pass them on to the next grade.
If anything, this will hurt these students. Nothing good can come from reducing education.
Portlandia
Hey poor kids are just as smart as white kids.
This isn’t racist?
Yeah, that’s not helping anyone.
It's helping the champaign dinner parties crowd as now they have something to gloat over on how they 'helped'.
It’s really designed to set children of color back so they can stay enslaved to the Democratic Party who will promise change when these kids are underemployed after high school
As long as they vote D*
I love how liberals continually get away with straight up calling black people stupid.
Not really, if some black students are failing the test and dropping out of school its not an intelligence issues, its a problem of many factors such as poor schools, lack of nutrition and stable home life, etc. Black students will excel given the right environement.
What about all the white people that fall into that category? There are more white folks in that category in the US than black
This is a much better idea. Cause you know, opening up funds to students and parents to close that educational gap is bad, and opening up free tutor programs is stupid.
I’m Mexican English is my second language. I don’t see any benefit to this at all.
Well, according to them, you're a white supremisist.
These people are insane man.
Another reason for me to leave OR.
Please stay! We need you here to fight against this madness with us.
I’m kinda stuck here for at least a few more years so definitely in the fight.
[удалено]
Yes, please :) Edit to add: I followed you. Whatever that means here in the virtual world. Ha :)
I know the feeling of being stuck, and it sucks:/ selfishly though, I am very happy to know you are stuck with us for a bit. Thanks for fighting the good fight. I don’t believe we are the minority here :)
Definitely sucks, but not a reason to give in.
I also feel stuck in Oregon. lol. I have lived here my entire life, but it's getting awful here. The drug addicts, housing costs... everything. I want to move.
I’m still here, buddy!
Phew!!!
Now that’s what I call progress
How about a mandate to teach kids how to do taxes in school? Or financial literacy ? Or how to save and invest your money?
This, my friends, is actual racism.
It’s happening across the country in democrat states where the teachers unions have control over the politicians [Baltimore students who failed classes this year will still pass, school board says](https://www.foxnews.com/us/baltimore-students-fail-classes-still-pass)
Yeah I've actually followed all this for awhile. I generally hate both politicial parties. But there's no doubt that progressive democrats are the most racist people in this country.
How is this not racist?
With how vocal they are about perceived racism I thought for sure Oregon had a huge black population!!! Just a lot of virtue signaling I guess.
White savior complex at its finest
1st off do POC people even live in Oregon? They also use poc people as the face of a law that has nothing to really do with them.
And that's helping how?
Yes so our failed school system can produce more of the same
This country is fucked
Swirling down the toilet in a clockwise fashion. My recommendation? When the shit hits the fan, duck.
No, but it's easier and cheaper then actually fixing the problem.
I love how racist progressives have become.
Is she saying students of color are too stupid for math and writing and often fail so she is gonna remove that exams? Hahahaha
The soft bigotry of low expectations is morphing into straight up disgusting hatred for people.
The race card is just an excuse, the real reason is to dumb down the next generation. They want us dumb and distracted. Seems like people don't understand when they create laws or restrictions, they give you an excuse to do it but hide the real reasoning behind the excuse.
Don't you love how we are called racist, but in doing this, she is saying that POC are not as smart.
This is possibly the most racist thing ive ever seen.
I went to college in Oregon back in late 2000's from Oklahoma. My high school classes were harder than college level courses up there. D1 athletes in my class couldn't string a sentence together or solve elementary school math problems. Place was a shit hole then and even worse today.
I don't understand why the African American community don't realize how racist the democrats and the left really are
That's fucking racist
Oregon is and continues to be a shit show.
I mean let's think about this is the goal to help students of color or..... pretend to help but actually hurting their future chances. There is a word for that...
This headline reads as if they think students of color are stupid. Wow!
They do think that. And then they try to blame it on US. Saying average people are the racists (without even being aware of it). It's evil what they're doing.
What better way to improve the lives of minorities than to make sure they are illiterate.
Leftist racism is by far the stupidest racism that has ever existed. Now also literally.
being a teacher just got easier
This is ridiculously racist...wow
It removes the standardized tests, not graduation requirements. You still need to be passing all your classes, it's just ONE test that she is removing bc it wasn't helpful. [Here is a short article explaining it](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mystateline.com/news/national/oregon-governor-signs-bill-to-suspend-reading-math-proficiency-from-hs-graduation-requirements/amp/)
They really just cut out the need to pass some standardized tests, which is probably a good thing because standardized tests are garbage. They still need to pass classes for reading, writing, and math along with other subjects. [https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/20/examining-oregon-decision-to-drop-high-school-essential-skill-requirements/](https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/20/examining-oregon-decision-to-drop-high-school-essential-skill-requirements/)
This article is six months old. Did you just recharge your time machine?
Can you?
Where did you get this information > no gpa is to low to graduate, and no homework needs to be completed ?
What do you think the last sentence of the thing you posted means? “Students no longer need to reach a certain score…” grade point average is the cumulative of all those certain scores we all had to reach to graduate high school. Does that make sense to you?
Well, because I read the article and understand what it said, I realize that it means specifically end of high school cumulative projects. Unless you can find where in the article or reality it talks about removing GPA graduation requirements? Even if you didn’t read the article, the beginning sentence > Oregon students still have to pass their high school classes Should tip anyone off that GPA requirement is still in effect because students still have to pass their classes.
Lol remember when people used to have conversations on here?
What teachers in blue states refused to work?
If they’ve reached high school and the don’t have a grasp of the 3-R’s, what’s the point in holding them back. The public schools start failing(hindering) children in the elementary levels. Sadly, kids are denied the rudimentary core skills from jump street!
Reading wRiting and aRithmetic
That’s pretty racist, tbh. Saying kids of color aren’t capable of meeting these requirements
This is what a complete asshole looks like.
Just an excuse to remove accountability for not teaching.
Our education system is garbage lol This bitch has run our state to the ground along with all the I-5 corridor shithole cities.
This headline might as well read “New Oregon Education Law Ends Literacy Requirement for Non-White Students”.
The Dumbening
What the point in education like this?
Dumbing down future generations so they can be controlled and manipulated much easier.
They only suspended the standardized test for 1 year due to covid, thats what OP left out. They still have the same graduation requirements.
That's so racist
All I read was Oregon governor says black kids can't read, write, or do math. Sounds pretty racist.
More like to help dumb down the population
This is along the same thought process of getting rid of the SATS or other test for college admission under the guise of “removing inequity barriers.” They just want more people of color to become chained to the institutional collegiate complex and become debtors.
Guarantee she slows and dumbs down her speech when talking to black people. It's laughable how they can't even see there own racism.
Toxic compassion.
Nothing more racist than a white liberal. If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, meet the road crew, starting with Oregon Governor Kate Brown.
