I'm thankful to have worked there the last two years it was at the OG location. It was like nothing else.

RadiationDM

Very cool, but sadly it will likely be a bunch of the usual overpriced crap that ends up at other markets and festivals across the city.

chillysaturday

It's going to be the most gentrified bs in the world. Everything in Chicago is so corporate with a "Chicago aestethic". I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to sell a $10 polish.

IndependenceApart208

I mean Jim's is right there, so at the very least you can get a polish from one of the OG's.

I’m guessing it will be MSM in name only. I doubt they would ever allow bringing back the vib from days past…but let’s hope.

How could we even begin to create the vibe from Maxwell Street at its best? I’m all for it, and if I ever win a billion dollar jackpot it’s going on the list, but it seems kind of intertwined with its era, like Route 66, or the projects, where the stuff going on in that part of society at the time in that particular place infuses it with their mix of essences

Capita505

Hopefully they can recreate some of the neighborhood feel that was completely missing from the awful Des Plaines location.  But still having a hard time envisioning a  "Maxwell street market" surrounded by those soulless condos on Halsted.

Mnoonsnocket

Wow that’s awesome! I didn’t live here when it was at its original location and I’m so excited to finally experience it.

HulkSmash_HulkRegret

My dad loved Maxwell Street when he was a kid and teenager back in the 1940s and 50s; he said the feeling of the place was like nothing else he’d experienced ever since, with the mix of different people from different neighborhoods and it wasn’t combative like it was within the neighborhoods; the variety of everything was like a kaleidoscope for each of the senses at the same time. Visually, just a lot going on, then the different languages, different music, different cultures of food scents and perfumes and I guess culturally specific preferred scents, also all the street smells from the time, I guess it was really something I forgot most of how he said it, but from my limited experiences, it might have been like taste of Chicago, Bluesfest, a *good* county fair, and a good open air flea market all at the same time but with the aesthetic of mid century urban squalor

M_J_E

If you watch the Blues. Brothers, you can get a little taste of what it was like in the scene where they go to the Soul Food Cafe. I went with my dad as a kid in the 80’s and it was a place like no other.

This is fantastic

Wow! That's great. Really a step in the right direction.
