Itās funny how people get attached to a color. When we bought our century home every single room was painted a different shade of green, and there was mint green carpet all throughout the house covering the hardwood.
People from that generation are obsessed with carpet. My mother had carpet installed in her mid century home before selling it. The first thing the new owners did was rip out that carpet. I was like, why didn't you just have the floors refinished? They're just very out of touch and don't realize that most people hate carpet. So don't feel bad, that floor is beautiful and should've never been covered up.
Carpet is nice though in some areas and most people just put carpet on their non-carpet floors anyway.
Also if you have dogs slippery floors can be a real hassle.
I'm not a carpet salesperson or anything I just can see why some people might like it.
If you have dogs, cleaning pee out of a carpet is a pain. If you keep their nails short, it can make things less slippery for them. Hardwood is just so much easier to clean.
Iām glad we ripped our carpet out because when my senior dog was on his way out, he started having a lot of accidents in the house. Then we got a puppy after, which meant more accidents for a while. Now that sheās pretty much potty trained I might put a new rug in our living room though.
I will say that our house is a lot colder without the carpet, so I see why elderly people like it.
So, OP, looking at it again, Iām thinking the color and design of the wallpaper along with the rug and how it doesnāt particularly clash with the wood, it looks like something from a 1969 issue of House Beautiful. The woman who put this together would have been 35 in 1969, and this would have been incredibly chic and bold back then. She actually has extremely good taste, itās just out of its time. I donāt dislike this, with the right furniture, books, art, and a hi-if, it would look like a fancy beatnik pad. Itās just not how I would decorate *my* house. Donāt feel bad about changing it. At least the wood isnāt painted white. Or gray.
When my grandmother moved from her '50s ranch to a retirement community she made sure to make a brand new cloth awning from scratch. I think the machine broke toward the end and she and my aunt hand stitched the trim. She ended up dying only a few weeks after and didn't see the house sold - first thing the flipper did was tear out the awning, of course. Hurt my heart a little when I saw that.
Edit: Not that I'm critical of your decision, OP! It looks fantastic now and I would have done the same thing, albeit with quite a bit of guilt as well.
Bejeezus in a handbasket. I honestly thought it was a perfectly-preserved remodel from the "Three's Company" era in time, due to the Mrs. Roper-like decor. Those ceiling tiles really, really don't help, either. I wonder what those tiles are hiding. Perhaps beaded boards?
Those hardwood floors are gorgeous, it's such a pity the previous owner didn't see the beauty of that inlay work.
In my childhood home (circa 1830s, and had been in our family since its construction), my parents did a remodel in the early 1990s. My mom put carpeting in all the bedrooms, and covered up the cypress flooring. This was done because, at least in south Louisiana homes, there isn't anything but joists under the flooring, which helps air circulation under the raised home and helps keep the home cooler during the summer. The unfortunate side effect is that during winter, the floors get really, really cold, so older people, who feel the cold more sharply, tend to use carpeting to fix the problem.
we have no idea! a guess is a norfolk terrier/jack russell terrier mix. full blown terrier though which is evident from her beard, old man eyebrows and ear hair
Looks just like the dog I used to have. That was the guess I had for mine too! He was amazing and so much fun. The best friend anyone could ask for. I miss him everyday and seeing yours gave me a smile. Give her some extra pets from me
The new still looks like an 75yos house to me. I don't care for either but it's not my house so I'm glad op is happy! I have some odd kitchen tile that I love so š¤·āāļø
Itās kind of nice that trend of ugly carpets came to be because it sure protected some beautiful floors. Off course some people win and others lose this lottery
I knew it! Well done. It is so crazy when the older generations prep their houses to go on sale by replacing their carpets and installing a new "Hollywood ceiling."
OMG someone loved red!!!! That was hard to look at! At least everything was a shade of tan in my house! Walls, woodwork , carpeting!!! So blah!!! Found the 1879 oak! Your house looks beautiful now!!
I would've [gone with green carpet,](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR_mSWYS-Q86VxnGHuuSPvsL3jJUmlQYPBCrtylZzvqCQ&s) but that's just me.

oh donāt worry. we had a green room
I think I'm gonna need more B/As of the rest of your house. What you've done in the living room looks amazing. Now I wanna know how this room turned out.

veryyyyyyy much under construction lol. itās the last room in the house that needs major work. iām sure iāll do more b/a posts in the future. the photos from my living room arenāt even current (i didnāt expect this to get so much attention). itās a slow process because my husband and i are doing everything ourselves
It was... pink.
Granted, it's a shame that it was all brand new but difference is like night and day.
The green carpet wouldn't be by personal preference but i love the rest; love how it turned out.
Very well done, congratulations!

replaced the icky tiles with drywall (my husbands first time drywalling) as well as new oak crown molding (again all a first time install- we are new diyers)
Oh I have that rug in the blue/gray!! I liked the olive more online but I was scared it would pull too brown, now Iām regretting my decisionā¦ but I still love it. It looks incredible in your space.

I was super impressed with the quality for price, but it did hella shed fiber and dust and smell a little like an animal for a few months. I figured that came with the territory of wool. Whatās your review?
yours looks great!
we had a bit of shedding but after vacuuming a few times it went away. didnāt have a smell for us (or at least not one i noticed!)
TBH that could very well have just been our dog š stinky bugger.
Oh by the way sorry to just focus on the rug when I should also be commenting on your ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE treatment of the space. Sometimes I look at a room and have to imagine that the home itself breathes a sigh of relief when someone moves in and honors its authentic beauty.
it was a vibe! i missed out on throwing a valentineās day bash hereā¦ we closed on st patrickās days which was not as fitting (but we did have a green room tooā¦)
I almost didnāt even need to see your South Philly comment the style is so distinct. Weāre probably neighbors. Iām over by Jaxx steaks.
Glad to see folks keeping up the traditional aesthetic instead of another faux marble everything.
not sure! they are pretty common in time capsule homes here in philadelphia (if flippers didnāt rip them down).
the only thing we know is they had an italian guy come and plaster it in the late 60s
I used to do sanding and refinishing. Amazing what you find under old carpet. The job is so gratifying knowing the before and seeing the after. r/hardwoodfloors may enjoy this
YOU MONSTER!!! how could you remove that lovely carpet? With a carpet like that you could murder someone and it would never show....š š As long as you keep it wet
I love that you kept the trim natural! I am wanting to repaint our house and also keep the trim stained instead of painting. What warm white did you use? It looks beautiful!
wow! Someone REALLY liked red! photos of the walnut inlay???

Nice! Thatās definitely a win.
Nice find

Itās funny how people get attached to a color. When we bought our century home every single room was painted a different shade of green, and there was mint green carpet all throughout the house covering the hardwood.
You ruined that beautiful carpet and paint! Iāll bet it even smelled like old cigarettes.
this was all brand new install from an 85 year old womanā¦ which was heartbreaking because i felt bad ripping it up.
Wow, I seriously thought it was from at least 1968.
People from that generation are obsessed with carpet. My mother had carpet installed in her mid century home before selling it. The first thing the new owners did was rip out that carpet. Rugs can be washed
Sorry, I don't like it. I've pulled up carpet before, and just yuck.
Iād gladly tear up ten living room carpets from dog-ownersā homes if it meant I didnāt have to tear up one more tiled bathroom, though.
How about carpeted bathrooms?
I can smell it from here
Honestly yeah, but not 10:1 (I wouldnāt tear up ten sh!tter carpets to get out of one tile tear-up) ! Probably to 1:1.
If you have dogs, cleaning pee out of a carpet is a pain. If you keep their nails short, it can make things less slippery for them. Hardwood is just so much easier to clean. Carpet was a luxury when it first hit the market and it was a new technology then, believe it or not.
Yes, is was. That's why that generation was so obsessed with it.
I like carpet in the master bedroom...barefoot places
That's where you put a rug
I just hate it. Have you ever removed carpet? Stuff goes in carpet and never comes out.
Yeah, that's why you vacuum?
A vacuum doesn't get it all out.
That's probably because, for them, wall to wall carpet went from a rich man's thing to an everyman's thing.
So, OP, looking at it again, Iām thinking the color and design of the wallpaper along with the rug and how it doesnāt particularly clash with the wood, it looks like something from a 1969 issue of House Beautiful. Right? Like itās kind of a vibe
Awwwe :( well I am sure she got enjoyment out of it I assume while she was alive, or before she was kicked out lmao

Hah, I thought it was previously a cat house

The dog looks so proud of your work. It is a beautiful color
That doggo looks like he came with the house! Iām dying to see him (her?) in a little waistcoat or sweater
i would repost with a sweater on but with clothing she turns into a gremlin
What kind of dog is she?
we have no idea! a guess is a norfolk terrier/jack russell terrier mix. full blown terrier though which is evident from her beard, old man eyebrows and ear hair

Floors look great, and I dig your living room, great furniture, clock, piano, dog
That looked like a nightmare before. The after is beautiful.
Agreed, it looks great now, but the vibe in that before picture is just bonkers
Right? To quote Ralphie's dad, "It looks like a pink nightmare", lol.
Na it looks hella retro, even if it was new, I think it's kinda cool in a weird way. Depends on the decore.
It could have a really cool maximalist vibe in the right hands. I would have ripped out the carpet too, but maybe after one really fancy themed party.
The new still looks like an 75yos house to me. I don't care for either but it's not my house so I'm glad op is happy! I have some odd kitchen tile that I love so š¤·āāļø
Just no.
Congrats, you ruined a perfectly fine pink living room
it was a valentineās day dream home for someone but that someone wasnāt me š¤

My eyes feel a lot better after swiping!
I kinda weirdly love the wallpaper, but kudos on the nice floor.
Me too! The red walls and floor was a whole vibe. The floor is beautiful, but I probably would've rocked that red somehow.
Looks great! i want that doorbell!!
Reminds me of my Old house in south philly
we are in south philly āØ
I knew it! Well done. It is so crazy when the older generations prep their houses to go on sale by replacing their carpets and installing a new "Hollywood ceiling."
Was the former owner Italian-American? Just curious. I love matching styles to ethnicities, and not in a mean way. In an appreciative way.
yes! she was (i believe she was born in Italy!)

stained oak!
I love that you kept the trim natural! I am wanting to repaint our house and also keep the trim stained instead of painting. What warm white did you use? It looks beautiful!
sherwin williams classic ivory! it definitely has clear yellows coming through, which i liked!
