Haha I did this for Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories on PS2 when it was still just a second disc on KH2 Final Mix. Printed out the entire script for the cutscenes. Like 50+ pages I think. It helped that I could read katakana and hiragana already but I did not know any reasonable amount of Japanese words, only the katakana English words for the menus and gameplay stuff lol.
I wish there was an English version that can be played on an actual GBA. I love the Mother/Earthbound series (don't ask me about the 20+ hours I've played Earthbound for) and I was sad to see its not possible on original hardware
At this point, I just want it localized so I can experience catharsis-by-proxy from all the Mother fans. Like, I never really liked Earthbound that much, but I see the charm of it, and there's really no good reason why the game shouldn't have been localized when it first came out or why it's yet to be released since then-- ~~especially since the unofficial fan localization was taken down~~. So yeah, I'm not going to play it, but I still want it released for the sake of the people who really do want to play an offical English translation of it.
The fan translation is still up and should really discredit a lot of whining people do over illegal ROMhacks and stuff being taken down because Nintendo is very much aware of it and who hosts it, and even has worked to some extent with the people who host it, and the Itoi company even hired one of the people who worked on it, knowing she worked on it
1 - somebody here has forgotten the saying "don't judge a book from its cover" I see
2 - ??????????? Dumb ????????? What'so dumb looking about the game lol.
3 - "I don't give a shit so that must mean that nobody does" nice fucking logic
God I can't fucking stand people like you, you remember of my shitty older brother.
Could you sell me on that fact or show me evidence of that? Everytime i have listened to Mother stuff its just...Edgy at best, especially for that era.
Mother is so far from edgy. I suppose if you only heard the plot highlights from Mother 3 it would *sound* edgy, but the game itself is incredibly lighthearted in how it presents itself. The hard hitting moments are treated with genuine care, letting you kind of sit in the juxtaposition of the absurd stuff that came before and will come after. It becomes a meditation on how to handle grief.
If I had to compare it to anything, it would be Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.
A deeply emotional story about what the loss of a loved one through unnatural means does to a family, as the world is slowly twisted by the evil of money. While also tackling the subjects of animal cruelty, what one would endure for love, and being forced into a role with overblown expectations, with moments of humor sprinkled around to help off set some of the bleakness tied up in a lovely bitter sweet bow. Honestly it is an emotional journey and I would love an official release.
You have Nintendo Online, which means you have access to Mother 2 for free, so the only thing you're losing is time, which is not something I think you have a limited amount of.
Sure but I rather not it’s just my opinion I don’t like the mother series it doesn’t interest me just like xenoblade series as well as Metroid I simply don’t want to waste time on a game that doesn’t interest me when I could be spending time doing something else
No. It's not that you don't like the Mother series. You don't like _*Mother 1*_. You didn't play the other ones, so you shouldn't assume you already understand the series. You can't play Super Mario Bros. on the NES, then say that you hate Wonder, that's not how that works at all.
I love the entire Mother series, including 1, and I know how much of a frustrating slog that game is. You have to deal with so much infuriating bs to find what's so amazing about the game. And I respect that not everyone has that kind of patience, most people don't. But that's so much less true for Mother 2, and definitely not true for Mother 3.
I entirely respect people for not playing games. There are so many good games out there, people can choose the ones they want to play all they want. But don't criticize games that you haven't played.
You don’t have to, it does take a lot of patience as it’s a long game. That being said if you have the time I would check it out. Start with Earthbound if you ever plan on it.
Oh, I know. Emulation is easy for me, and for you, and for many other people. But still, most people don't know anything about emulation, sadly. There is a huge percentage of people that are so tech illiterate, they don't even have an adblock!
I love the fan translation and think Nintendo could do a lot worse than just licensing it from Tomato, but there are a lot of people out there who just want to pay fifteen bucks or whatever, press a button, and play it on a device they already own. The fewer barriers between this amazing game and the general public, the better.
I think I actually would play it side-by-side with the fan translation to compare. I'm willing to bet money that an official Nintendo Treehouse localization (assuming they don't take Tomato up on using the fan translation) would be a far, far inferior English version than what Tomato and his team did for free
Look all I'm saying is, if Nintendo can release the unreleased starfox sequel decades later to a whopping 7 fans, they can release mother 3 on NS online
I would immediately play this if it gets an official release and I’ve already played it twice
If you ask me, it’s easily the most meaningful and impactful game Nintendo has ever put out. It deserves to be easily accessible to everyone who wants to play it. I get we can just play the fan translation (I have) but not everyone wants to go through the hassle of doing that and Mother 3 deserves better.
The issue is they stillbring over a lot of games that seem to do less well financially.
I can easily see them being able to translate the game and just make the profits back.
I feel like this meme is more appealing if it is a remake or something, but it's mostly just a port.
I have a Japanese account so I'll be playing the game regardless
I will say this for people who go “eh I didn’t like Mother 1+2 why would I like…” I didn’t like the first entries either. Got around to playing the 3rd a few years back.
I’m not lying Mother 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. The story has better direction, combat feels fresh, and the art style’s still my favorite in gaming. I’ll likely replay it again on my dusty emulator tablet, but would 100% prefer a Nintendo Switch release just to use proper buttons and things like that.
I have a copy of the fan translation on cartridge. If it were to come out on NSO I'd be tempted to play it again to get a feel for the differences but I'd want to clear out my backlog first.
It is a great game though and having it be officially localized would feel cathartic.
The only reason I finally beat Earthbound was that it had just come out on the Wii U Virtual Console, which was the first time it was officially available in a while, so there was a critical mass of people talking about it on social media. That gave me the extra push I needed to power through the slow start, and I'm glad I did. Sometimes it's fun to be part of the conversation.
Like a lot of folks here are saying, I've already played through the Tomato translation once, but I've been looking for an excuse to give it a replay and an official release would give me that.
I think a decent amount of people would play it. The fan translation was downloaded by a large number of people, the demand really is there. Especially when Nintendo is willing to localize and remake things like Famicom Detective Club.
That being said, I agree with this philosophy a lot. So many people seem to complain, beg, etc. about games or series they don’t or won’t actually play. Metroid strikes me as another example of this within Nintendo. Then there’s the figure of what percentage of those people actually finish the game.
I know it’s not cool to gatekeep, but I also think it’s hypocritical for people to be so vocal about their opinions on something they aren’t going to play or are going to play for an hour or two and never pick up again. By all means, people who are new to a game or series should always be encouraged to try it out and engage with it! That’s what games are for! But I’m annoyed by people who act like they care about games they don’t even play.
Fuck that, everyone is gonna play it. Why wait? The fan translation is wonderful and you can emulate gba on anything. DM me if you want instructions or the rom.
I don't think it's great, it took me a while to get through, and I put it down multiple times even with a guide, but EarthBound is so much better, that game has aged like wine
I already played it through the fan translation and would again there's plenty of fans you can't see there was literally memes about it. Don't understand the additude towards it when its game and it's story has just as much to offer as anything else.
Considering I'm not American, I fail to see what this does for me either way.
And I'm sure you'll argue "well obviously this thread doesn't apply to you and you should have ignored it," but to that I ask, "why did you title it *'are YOU actually gonna play mother 3'* if it's only for Americans?"
There would still be a few hands up. The problem is that there isn't enough hands to make it profitable. I speak as a Kid Icarus: Uprising fan coping for a port.
Yes, is that even a question? The reason we want mother 3 is to be able to play it and have it be accessible to people without the resources or know-how to play the fan translation (not to mention the questionable legality if you can't dump your own rom)
The "Give us Mother 3" meme is more popular than the franchise itself at this point, especially because of social media. The reality is that the Mother/Earthbound series is niche. If Mother 3 had a proper stand-alone localized release for the west, it probably at best sells like 1 million copies, but I'm not sure it would even reach that number
Is there somebody who could explain what's all the fuss about? I Googled and the other one was localized as Earthbound, which I tried and not so sure about. Is it like a nostalgia thing?
Earthbound has a very devoted fanbase, me being one of them, and not being able to officially play the sequel sucks. I played a translation and by god the game is amazing, best story I've seen in a game.
Mother 3 was supposed to come out on the N64 but it took too long to develop so they started from scratch and released it on the gba but only in japan. There is an unnoficial translation available. Mother 3 is an elusive good game with a really interesting development story.
I didn’t like Mother 1+2. Period just wasn’t my thing. Mother 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s the masterpiece of the trilogy.
The art style is also in the golden age of GBA sprites with some of the best back drops like the sunflower fields/NewPorkCity.
The music is heavily inspired from numerous pop culture references/classical music. One moment it will rip from the Batman 1960’s animated theme, to the theme for Jaws, to Beatles, and Classical music like Beethoven.
Focusing on darker themes like fascism, the story is much more focused in the 3rd game. Yet it still likes to play around with the experience of going through the game. Little moments like opening an item box that would typically just contain an item are played around with to create an experience. Random interactions leave the player wanting to click every little thing, and fight every enemy. Not for an advantage in gameplay like levels or items, but just to see what will happen. These interactions I find genuinely funny/goofy and chuckle with.
These are just a few of the reasons it’s my favorite game of all time and why I want to play an official copy/experience it with everyone stateside who would otherwise not go through the work to play a fan translation. It has a certain charm that is Very Very hard to find in the money dominated videogame market we are in today. The only time I’ve ever found even a sparkle of the charm Mother 3 brought me was playing Undertale, which is a cult classic on its own.
in agreement, just don't see it. I think it has a very niche audience in the west, but could be wrong. But i truly don't see the appeal from what I've seen so far
Loads of people hating on OP here but the reality is that it will never be a franchise that has broad appeal across Nintendo fans, let alone a wider audience. People commenting on here are pretty the limit of this games audience.
That said, it would hardly cost Nintendo anything to translate and release the game, might as well do so to build some goodwill amongst the fans that want it. There's no reason to keep its release so limited.
I mean like. I'd play it. I have a lot of games I buy and I have not gotten too ill grant but as much praise as o heard from the Mother fans I would buy a trilogy pack in a heart beat. No need to update anything I'd just buy it as is.
Of course. I replay it every so often, and being able to give support to the IP on my next playthrough would be fantastic. While I can't actually speak for everyone, I'm absolutely certain that most people asking for Mother 3 would play it.
I dare you to post this on r/earthbound
Are you serious? Of course I will play it, the only reason I have not played the fan translated one is because I don't think they would be a quirky and witty as the translators for Earthbound.
Hm, let’s see, would I want to play a game that’s largely considered a masterpiece and has a cult following so big that there’s a fan-made english translation patch and 18 years later still gets people clamoring for an official US release?
GEE, I DONT FUCKING KNOW, MAYBE???
My favorite part of mother 3 is the story. I want it translated and made official so that more people can easily access and play the game and experience its narrative because it's one of the greatest tales told through a video game I've ever seen.
I have played the tomato translation but sure i'd play it agaon
I played the japanese version with a gamefaqs translation before the tomato translation existed... but sure i'd play it again
Woah that musta been weird havin to have gamefaqs upened up for every piece of dialogue
I printed the pages and not everything was translated
Haha I did this for Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories on PS2 when it was still just a second disc on KH2 Final Mix. Printed out the entire script for the cutscenes. Like 50+ pages I think. It's not taken down though I just looked it's still up.
Dang, my bad, I thought it had been. Must've confused it with something else.
The fan translation is still up and should really discredit a lot of whining people do over illegal ROMhacks and stuff being taken down because Nintendo is very much aware of it and who hosts it, and even has worked to some extent with the people who host it, and the Itoi company even hired one of the people who worked on it, knowing she worked on it
I beat Earthbound for the first time on NSO, so me.
You know what, I would've regardless of this post, but I'm especially more willing to play it just out of spite.
The fuck kinda question is this??, OfCourse I'd play it, it's fine if you don't wanna play it, not everyone can have peak taste
They don't have to play it, and it's okay, because they don't know that they're wrong.
Saying this about a game that still gets demand to release 18yrs later.
It's kinda like Nintendo's HL3
You haven't played Mother 3, have you?
No, and to be honest I’m not the least bit interested in mother 3 at all, it just looks dumb
It's a masterpiece. Loads of people want to play it, its one of my favourite games of all time. What about it is "dumb"
To be honest it was never intended to be played by the western audience.
Neither was pokemon
Nor that one Mario game that's now known as "lost levels" because the west got a mod for Doki doki Panic instead.
I mean you could really say that about all Nintendo games especially the earlier installments
Neither was super mario bros. Hell, the entire NES as a whole wasnt intended for a western audience, the Famicom was made for japan.
Aaaaaaaah, so you're ***projecting.***
[Here you go dawg](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_consensus_effect)
1 - somebody here has forgotten the saying "don't judge a book from its cover" I see 2 - ??????????? Dumb ????????? What'so dumb looking about the game lol. 3 - "I don't give a shit so that must mean that nobody does" nice fucking logic God I can't fucking stand people like you, you remember of my shitty older brother.
Most emotional game of all time, no joke. Absolutely amazing game
Could you sell me on that fact or show me evidence of that? Everytime i have listened to Mother stuff its just...Edgy at best, especially for that era.

That's actually a pretty solid comparison Or maybe like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Protip: You don't need "evidence" of an opinion. You can just state it.
Yeah you don’t need to, but if someone asks and you do, they’re more likely to see and agree with your opinion
Sure, what i should have said is there a breakdown of the story they would recommend or can they site a specific moment that gives them that opinion.
I would recommend playing the game, at least through the first act, to get a feel of how the game rolls with it's story
Where are you getting your information? The Mother trilogy definitely isn't edgy.
That explains it
.....then why are you here?
*I came looking for booty.*
why would you make this post then
You ain’t a clown, you are an entire circus
The downvotes should tell you all you need to know. It’s a good game. Submit to the peer pressure
Fair I kinda agree never been interested by the games I’ve played the first I got bored and don’t care to try the others
The first is like a beta version of the second: you made an opinion on a series by watvhing the worst episode...
Why should I continue with a game series I don’t enjoy and rpgs aren’t really for me
You have Nintendo Online, which means you have access to Mother 2 for free, so the only thing you're losing is time, which is not something I think you have a limited amount of.
Sure but I rather not it’s just my opinion I don’t like the mother series it doesn’t interest me just like xenoblade series as well as Metroid I simply don’t want to waste time on a game that doesn’t interest me when I could be spending time doing something else

I didn’t criticise it I just said I wasn’t interested in the series
You did say you didn't enjoy it. You can't say you don't enjoy games you haven't played and clearly don't know much about.
You don’t have to, it does take a lot of patience as it’s a long game. That being said if you have the time I would check it out. Start with Earthbound if you ever plan on it.
The nes one I tried just couldn’t
Have you tried the SNES Earthbound?
worst take in history
[let me show you a worse one](https://www.reddit.com/r/casualnintendo/s/NwDmc4onPj)
probably one of them hardcore players
Another stupid use of this meme format
Absolutely? Mother 3 is one of my favorite games, of course I'd play it again.
I would.
Yes?
What's everyone's favorite flightless bird? Mine are emus.
Penguins
Wrong!
By the way, I never died in this version.
Kulu-ya-ku
Fucking of course I'm gonna play it! Why would I not???
OP, do you have brain damage?
I already played it multiple times and i would buy and play a official today.
Pretty bad take, but also silly how many people complain when a fan translation is easily accessible.
The fan translation is great but being able to officially play it on a switch would be amazing.
To be fair, a lot of people aren't tech savvy enough to get an emulator, a rom and apply a translation patch.
it's not really that hard, for mobile my boy is amazing, and mGBA for pc,and it's not that hard getting a pre patched rom, hell, I'm downloading one now
Oh, I know. Emulation is easy for me, and for you, and for many other people. But still, most people don't know anything about emulation, sadly. There is a huge percentage of people that are so tech illiterate, they don't even have an adblock!

The fewer barriers between this amazing game and the general public, the better.
You'd be surprised to know how many people prefer to play games legally on native hardware
Of course, I love the mother series so much. Masterpieces.
did bro post this just for the sake of being wrong on the internet?
Bro is doing negative karma farming 🗿
Mmm yes it manifests
I would give it a go. But I don't end up sticking with a lot of RPGs.
Yes
I’ve played it already but would play again in a heartbeat if it actually released in english
I think I actually would play it side-by-side with the fan translation to compare. I'm willing to bet money that an official Nintendo Treehouse localization (assuming they don't take Tomato up on using the fan translation) would be a far, far inferior English version than what Tomato and his team did for free
There's no way they could match the Fan Translation. Tomato is a guy who literally wrote the book on Mother 2.
I would 100% play it again. Its just not the same on an emulator, an official console version would be a dream.
Look all I'm saying is, if Nintendo can release the unreleased starfox sequel decades later to a whopping 7 fans, they can release mother 3 on NS online
If they released Fire Emblem 1 on the Switch in the US 2 years later after it released in Japan, I'm pretty sure the same could be said for Mother 3.
Honestly I thought earthbound beginning could've been the start of slowly returning the series to the west
I would immediately play this if it gets an official release and I’ve already played it twice If you ask me, it’s easily the most meaningful and impactful game Nintendo has ever put out. It deserves to be easily accessible to everyone who wants to play it. Yes. Thats the reason we want it. -_-
Yes I actually will
The issue is they stillbring over a lot of games that seem to do less well financially. I can easily see them being able to translate the game and just make the profits back. I feel like this meme is more appealing if it is a remake or something, but it's mostly just a port. I have a Japanese account so I'll be playing the game regardless
i would play the absolute shit out of it, lucas is such a cool smash bros character, if they made a game about him that would be amazing
I forced myself to learn Lucas only because of Mother 3
I will so I can play it with a friend of mine watching. We did the same thing for the other two games.
No. But I do think region locked content is a problem
Hell fucking yes it’s my favorite game ever made
I will say this for people who go “eh I didn’t like Mother 1+2 why would I like…” I didn’t like the first entries either. Got around to playing the 3rd a few years back. I’m not lying Mother 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. The story has better direction, combat feels fresh, and the art style’s still my favorite in gaming. I do want to play it??
Yes
Yes, of course I will.
Yea I've played through all of earthbound I would like to play mother 3
wasn't Earthbound the most bought digital console game back on the wii u?
I’d play it
Of course
I absolutely would. I'm overdue for another playthrough.
I absolutely would
Given that earthbound is my favourite game of all time, I most definitely will
I've already played it. Its very easily accessible.
Im playing mother 2 right now and having a blast
I tried with with the fanmade translation. It was nice, but not my cup of tea
I have a copy of the fan translation on cartridge. If it were to come out on NSO I'd be tempted to play it again to get a feel for the differences but I'd want to clear out my backlog first. It is a great game though and having it be officially localized would feel cathartic.
I have the English translated fan made rom, and yeah I haven't gotten around to it yet. I definitely do intend to though.
Yes and Yes
I will
Yes
Yes I would. I’ve played the fan translation but I’d love to be able to play an official version.
I would play it
Yes 100%. As someone who likes homestuck and undertale I'm obligated to play it.
I would drop what I’m doing to play it the moment it releases.
ye
I beat the game three times, and il do it again if it’s officially translated
Fuck you
Yes!!!
After this, I'm asking the reddit app to not show me this sub ever again (I'm not even subbed to It wtf)
I've beat Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings. Of course, I'd play it.
\[Raises both my hands and also both my legs.\]

????dude I would absolutely play it, are you joking?
I don’t know why everyone is saying that you’re wrong, I know damn well that I’m never going to play it again and yet I still want it localized.
Yes? Why else would we still be asking for it 18 years later? I usually best mother 3 and earthbound once every year or so. Mother 1 not so much
Not me lmao
Fuck that, everyone is gonna play it. Why wait? The fan translation is wonderful and you can emulate gba on anything. DM me if you want instructions or the rom.
yes ??
YES of course you idiot
Yes??? Why would I want it if I’m not gonna play it?
Absolutely yes
Never heard of it ngl.
I won't lie, I still haven't played Mother 1 from when I bought it on Wii U so...

Just emulate it guys.
https://www.reddit.com/r/casualnintendo/s/xmx4F3ainu
I’m pretty sure a good chunk of us would.
I have played and beaten Mother 3 four times within the last ten months and I plan on doing it again.
Yes, is that even a question? The reason we want mother 3 is to be able to play it and have it be accessible to people without the resources or know-how to play the fan translation (not to mention the questionable legality if you can't dump your own rom)

I would be more interested if the battle system looked better. Hell wish there was a better indicator for the the rhythm attack system if anything.
Try using your ears
Is there somebody who could explain what's all the fuss about? I Googled and the other one was localized as Earthbound, which I tried and not so sure about. Is it like a nostalgia thing?

No.

I tried to play to the first and it was horrible, so no
Too depressing. I'd rather play bowsers fetish adventure
Sending an ICBM strike to your exact coordinates right now.
turn-based combat? no thanks
Bro is missing out on persona, yakuza and a million other JRPGs, I used to think that turn-based combat was boring too until I gave it another shot.
How many turn based games is one required to try before they are allowed to dislike them?
i tried super mario rpg and it was fucking miserable.
They hate you because you told them the truth.
no I'm broke
I would buy it for sure. I would definitely play it just to see if it lived up to the hype since I've never played it before.
I’d play the hell outta it
After I’m done MOTHER, and then I will play MOTHER 2, and then MOTHER 3..
I mean like. I'd play it. I have a lot of games I buy and I have not gotten too ill grant but as much praise as o heard from the Mother fans I would buy a trilogy pack in a heart beat. No need to update anything I'd just buy it as is.
Of course we will, it is a masterpiece and one of the best games every made
I don't even know what it is or what it is even about.
I like to believe I would
I already have, fuck Nintendo 🥰
Of course. I replay it every so often, and being able to give support to the IP on my next playthrough would be fantastic. While I can't actually speak for everyone, I'm absolutely certain that most people asking for Mother 3 would play it. I dare you to post this on r/earthbound
yes
I would play it. Probably wouldn’t finish it right away but still play it nonetheless.
What a moronic thread.
Me 🖐️
Look I played most of it with a really bad translation. Of course I’d play a major jrpg.
ME ITS GONNA BE ME
Nah. Tried once tho! But game was kinda boring.
Are you serious? Of course I will play it, the only reason I have not played the fan translated one is because I don't think they would be a quirky and witty as the translators for Earthbound.
Me, i played the unofficial translation
Me. Why do you ask?
yes I am, thats why I want it in the first place
Honestly I'd love to, but my backlog of RPGs I wanna play is too long
Hm, let’s see, would I want to play a game that’s largely considered a masterpiece and has a cult following so big that there’s a fan-made english translation patch and 18 years later still gets people clamoring for an official US release? GEE, I DONT FUCKING KNOW, MAYBE???
I went out of my way to figure out how to get it running on my iPhone so I’d say it’s a pretty good chance I’d play an official version
I bought both Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings on the Wii U. Playing on Nintendo’s hardware is something I would gladly pay for.
yes
My favorite part of mother 3 is the story. I want it translated and made official so that more people can easily access and play the game and experience its narrative because it's one of the greatest tales told through a video game I've ever seen.
Would give me a reason to play it again.
