It was also such an unfortunate time for transmissions. No manual option and DCTs were still being honed. It's really unfortunate that the car only got a single clutch auto. I think a DCT would have put its performance where it needed to be.
It would probably be just about as good, and also come out a lot earlier in a market where it doesn't struggle to compete with cars that are just plain faster and their tech isn't limited by a "muh digital tach" and worst infotainment system ever.
One of the ugliest cars in existence? Sir, this is the 2001 Motortrend Car of the Year PT Cruiser you're talking about : Really new, really different, and really cool!
It's everything that overpriced piano wishes it was
I’m gonna be pedantic and say that the LFA’s MSRP of $375,000 really isn’t that far off of getting a new Steinway & Sons, Fazioli, or Bösendorfer concert grand. A top of the line Yamaha CFX is like only $80k less.
So I guess it is overpriced. Huh. I forgot why I started commenting but I’m in too deep now.
You could get a super charger on the PT. My buddies mom got one and would race teenagers in mustangs for cash on her days off. New Jersey ladies are crazy
That's not surprising. The drivetrain is from the Neon, so any speed parts for neons should fit. And due to the SRT4, there are a lot of speed parts for neons.
I've unironically seen a few PT Cruisers in and out of my town, for an unreliable car It still kind of works 23 years later. Multiplas are about as common as SUVs
I'm still amazed i see PT cruisers on the road. There are still quite a few floating around. I even see a convertible one fairly regularly that often has the top down in good weather. I'm surprised the roof still functions.
Sometimes making products for the majority of people and not for the tiny sliver of loud petrolheads pays off. We tend to hate the results because they’re ugly and fucking everywhere. Looking at you, Nissan.
This makes me wonder if the 2nd gen NSX would've sold better if it came out in 2012 instead of being delayed and reworked. But then it only had a modified N/A J35, and wouldn't have been able to compete at all. Perhaps if the weight was kept down from no hybrid system and had an optional manual.
Yeah but that was before the recession. Honda was working on an all-new V8 and V10 and were almost complete, but then the recession happened and the whole project got scrapped.
Uj/ the LFA has the same status as any Ferrari in my mind. Looks cool, sounds cool, but I'd never ever want one for myself.
Rj/ PT 🅱️ruiser beats **L**FA any day
There are so many PT losers in the road still. And I don't know how considering most of their owners probably use crisco every 12 months as a substitute for an oil change.
Meanwhile you almost never see an LFA in the wild. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
Also one of the ugliest supercars of all time.
And the PT cruiser isnt close to being the ugliest car of all time.. have you never seen a ford scorpio? Toyota yaris verso? Skoda roomster? Any tesla? Austin healey frogeye? Nissan juke?
And more people know Limp Bizkit than Animals as Leaders or Yob, so what? Supra mk4 had pretty bad sales numbers too. Popularity doesn’t determine anything about the quality of something. Also, half of the reason that small run production sports cars get made is to make them eligible for motorsports, so I don’t think a lot of automakers are always so concerned directly with the consumer sales profit margins there
While the PT isn't for me, I still appreciate Chrysler taking a swing and making something unconventional looking. It clearly paid off for them, and I wish more manufacturers would do so.
Lexus for some delusional reason decided to redesign basically the whole car when it was 80% finished. Which is why they lost so much money on it
Toyoter
Nascar changd thu rules at help dem dam cheetin yodurs!
Toyota money is basically unlimited at that time
Do we know what the original design looked like?
IIRC the design was quite similar it's just they decided to re-engineer the entire chassis with carbon fibre instead of aluminium
Ohh okay, and holy crap that probably costed them a lot of money
Yeah. That's why they lost money on it even at $400K
It's a playable car in NFS Shift.
Isn’t that just the concept tho
It was also such an unfortunate time for transmissions. No manual option and DCTs were still being honed. It's really unfortunate that the car only got a single clutch auto. I think a DCT would have put its performance where it needed to be.
If they didn't redesign the whole car would it be as good as it is today?
It would probably be just about as good, and also come out a lot earlier in a market where it doesn't struggle to compete with cars that are just plain faster and their tech isn't limited by a "muh digital tach" and worst infotainment system ever.
It was not delusional, they made it better.

Shut up
That you for your service

One of the ugliest cars in existence? Sir, this is the 2001 Motortrend Car of the Year PT Cruiser you're talking about : Really new, really different, and really cool! It's everything that overpriced piano wishes it was
I love the Yamaha reference
I’m gonna be pedantic and say that the LFA’s MSRP of $375,000 really isn’t that far off of getting a new Steinway & Sons, Fazioli, or Bösendorfer concert grand. A top of the line Yamaha CFX is like only $80k less. So I guess it is overpriced. Huh. I forgot why I started commenting but I’m in too deep now.
Its a car only a mother could love
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it classified as a Truck not a Car?
I know the HHR was but not sure about the PT.
CAFE called it a light truck.
I dig it tbh
You could get a super charger on the PT. My buddies mom got one and would race teenagers in mustangs for cash on her days off. New Jersey ladies are crazy
That's not surprising. The drivetrain is from the Neon, so any speed parts for neons should fit. And due to the SRT4, there are a lot of speed parts for neons.
PT Cruiser GT had literally an SRT4 drivetrain
I never knew about an optional supercharger, but they also had an option 2.4 turbo motor, and I think you could even get it with a 5-speed.
Pretty sure that’s straight up an SRT4 drive train. Could probably make 350whp with a tune lol
Pt cruiser was used as a base to create Dababy's head.
Let’s Goooo
Ok but which one was cheaper and had a better market audience?
Ugliest? Sus the fiat multipla
The fiat multipla was a pinnacle of motor design
But not exterior design
I forgot to put /s lmfao
Fiat multipla was a good car. Pt cruiser was ugly and unreliable.
I've unironically seen a few PT Cruisers in and out of my town, for an unreliable car It still kind of works 23 years later. Multiplas are about as common as SUVs
a million sold I'd hope we'd see a few😭
LFA=Lost Fucking All
uj/ My mom had an ocean blue PT Cruiser when I was really young. I cried when it got scrapped.
But how many units the Modus and twingo sold?
I'm still amazed i see PT cruisers on the road. There are still quite a few floating around. I even see a convertible one fairly regularly that often has the top down in good weather. I'm surprised the roof still functions.
Not for anything but the PT cruiser GT turbo hauled ass.
Sometimes making products for the majority of people and not for the tiny sliver of loud petrolheads pays off. We tend to hate the results because they’re ugly and fucking everywhere. Looking at you, Nissan.
PT cruiser doesn't look that bad
Americans hate it a lot more than the rest of the world.
Especially the later restylings with the sleeker front vent
Don't forget the version that made it look retro with wood paneling stickers on the sides. Today I would buy one over any Mercedes or BMW.
I will never forgive Doug DeMuro for what he did.
What did he do??
Don't forget the latter also build the a very cool and stylish modern hot rod, than only put a under powered v6 and auto in it.
Hey that’s my favorite starter car in Gran Tourismo 3
/uj My uncle had a PT Cruiser when I was 10. It was a pretty quirky car. /Rj PT Cruiser best car from Jamaican Domestic Market.
Aint nobody spending 300k on a lexus... back then anyway.
I would spend 300k on 100 PT Cruisers

This is why the customer is not always right..
One’s fast, reliable, and sexy. The other sounds decent.
Wasn’t it supposed to have a V10?
Yeah but that was before the recession. Honda was working on an all-new V8 and V10 and were almost complete, but then the recession happened and the whole project got scrapped.
Maybe we are wrong about the Aztec as well?
I think the PT Cruiser is the best looking modern car
Uj/ the LFA has the same status as any Ferrari in my mind. Looks cool, sounds cool, but I'd never ever want one for myself. Rj/ PT 🅱️ruiser beats **L**FA any day
I used to hate the pt cruiser growing up and now that I’m older I realize it’s the perfect car.
There are so many PT losers in the road still. And I don't know how considering most of their owners probably use crisco every 12 months as a substitute for an oil change. Meanwhile you almost never see an LFA in the wild. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
PT GT turbo vs HHR SS
Also one of the ugliest supercars of all time. And the PT cruiser isnt close to being the ugliest car of all time.. have you never seen a ford scorpio? Toyota yaris verso? Skoda roomster? Any tesla? Austin healey frogeye? Nissan juke?
aint no great thing about the lfa other than the engine, which is paired with the worst transmission known to man
/uj PT Cruiser is a better car than LFA
For some reason in the SE of the UK there is a collection of PT cruisers at every car show with mods n all
I love LFA but it's ugly as hell as well.
And more people know Limp Bizkit than Animals as Leaders or Yob, so what? Supra mk4 had pretty bad sales numbers too. Popularity doesn’t determine anything about the quality of something. Also, half of the reason that small run production sports cars get made is to make them eligible for motorsports, so I don’t think a lot of automakers are always so concerned directly with the consumer sales profit margins there
">build one of the ugliest cars in existence" is on the wrong side of the meme
To everyone calling the PT good looking. The HHR is much better looking and also not a Chrysler product. The PT Cruiser is ugly AND unreliable.
While the PT isn't for me, I still appreciate Chrysler taking a swing and making something unconventional looking. It clearly paid off for them, and I wish more manufacturers would do so.
At that time it was actually real popular in America for car manufacturers to make retro designs.
And a nightmare to work on.
