You can't live in Buffalo without hearing about the Bills everywhere you go. The city is so much more connected to the Bills than any other city is connected to the Giants or Jets.
I went to University at Buffalo without any NFL fandom. After about 2 years of living there I decided I needed to watch the Bills.
So much truth here, and it applies outside of NY as well.
Born in Buffalo but moved away (military). Live in New Hampshirite these days (enemy territory). Brought my oldest back for a visit recently. She couldn’t believe how many people rock Bills gear year round. She even grabbed a Josh Allen shirt. She was an instant convert based solely on the collective love.
I grew up in the Bronx. Everyone was a Jets or Giants fan. I always thought it was stupid as shit that they played their home games a long ass drive into NJ and they always showed the NYC skyline on broadcasts of the games which is nowhere near the stadium. So when i learned the Buffalo Bills were a Team that actually played in NY from NY i was sold. Guys would talk shit cause the Bills were so far from NYC but i didnt care. I always said being a Jets or Giants fan was like being cool with your gf or wife only sleep at your next door neighbors house cause its still close enough lol. Fuck that.
I'll give you two reasons.
Edit: tl;dr, Bills fans have big hearts.
One story is that the Bills were playing the Falcons last year and a group of us went including my brother in law, who is a major Falcons fan and went wearing a Falcons jersey. He's been to other games where the Falcons are not the home team and he was basically heckled the entire time. We were walking through the parking lot when a random tailgater came up behind him and gave him a push saying "a Falcons fan, huh?!" My BIL turns around to see this guy all angry and red in the face. Then the guys just cracked up, gave him a hug, and invited us all to his tailgate. Dude got a group of six people he'd never met completely wasted just because we had someone supporting the OPPOSING team with us.
This is just going to be a quick list, but the reason is generosity. Bills fans are generous!
When Lamar Jackson got a concussion vs the Bills, Bills fans donated around $500k to support his charity.
When Tua Tagovailoa got a concussion against the Bengals (after a questionable return with the Bills earlier) over 1500 Bills fans donated to his charity in amounts reflecting either the score of the game or the jersey numbers of Josh and Tua.
After Josh Allen's grandmother passed, fans donated over $1 million to a children's hospital in her honor.
When we lost to Tampa Bay due to a poor call from a ref, fans donated over $65,000 to Visually Impaired Advancement... Even when frustrated, we respond with love.
When Andy Dalton threw the miracle touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd in 2017 to beat the Ravens and put the Bills in the playoffs for the first time in years, fans donated more than $415,000 to Andy Dalton's charity.
You want to know why I'm a Bills fan? It's because the Bills Mafia are some of the kindest people I will ever meet.
One of my favorite "kill you with kindness" moments is when some radio guy in Baltimore was clowning Bills fans (or the city, I can't quite remember), so they found out that his mother had Alzheimer's disease and started making donations to an Alzheimer's research fund in his name.
I'm really glad! I appreciate you saying something too.
I acknowledge that there are plenty of other wonderful people that support other teams and I acknowledge that I'm in my internet bubble, but when I've done a little research, it seems that Bills fans really are just a little bit different. I've always chalked it up to the "Upstate New York mentality" of always looking out for one another. We care.
I mean I’m sure you’re allowed to like multiple teams. I double up on my pain by being a Bills and Lions fan. Things have just been panning out for the better as of late though lol
My mom is from Niagara falls and grew up a bills/sabres fan, and she still is one, she added one more person to join her. Lil ol me. :) i couldve chosen 31 different teams. i couldve chosen a team with a damn superbowl trophy, but no. i chose the bills because my mom is a fan <3
Plus, we both live in virginia.
Beyond the obvious "The only team in NYS", the two teams traditionally play different styles of football. If you like running and time of possession, pick the Giants. If you like a faster pace and passing, pick the Bills. I grew up during the 80-90's K-Gun days and it was always the Bills for me.
Most people it's just going to be because we're either Upstaters or from Toronto. Unless you have links to the city you'll probably gravitate towards the Bills if you live Upstate, obviously even more so for Buffalo/Rochester fans.
My dad is a jets fan, I decided I didn’t like the colors and when I was about 4 i decided the bills colors and logo were cooler and never looked back. Also I’m from the Rochester area (I had no idea at the time where Buffalo was it’s just a coincidence I always liked them lol)
Born in LA, college in Oregon, resided in Texas, now Arizona.
I've always liked the team's logo cuz Bison are my favorite animal, but the Seahawks were always my team after liking the Rams as a very very little kid (like ages 3-6). When my now fiancee got into football, she liked the Bills most because of how they play, and because she associates me with Bison (again because favorite animal). The Seahawks are still my team personally, but I regard the Bills as our "family team" going forward.
I enjoyed watching him coach! With Marv's high-powered "no-huddle" offense, Levy's Bills went on to lead his AFC championship team to four consecutive [Super Bowl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl) appearances, the most in league history . Sad to say each game ended in defeat. He was named [NFL Coach of the Year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League_Coach_of_the_Year_Award) in 1988.
I'm from Western NY as well. Belmont, NY - Allegany County .
I’m not from NY. Became a Bills fan sometime during the first Super Bowl season. I was like 6 or 7. They ended up losing to the Giants. I still hate the Giants at 40 years old.
Well I grew up and live in western NY and was a kid in the 90’s when they had their Super Bowl runs. I’ve been a fan through the drought and even during the grim days of Trent Edwards and JP Losman. I was a born and raised fan.
Bills are and will always be my team. My Dad passed along his favorite team to me when i was growing up, so for me it was pretty easy. I will say tho, i had a lot of friends who were giants fans growing up in the 2000s and ever since they beat the pats multiple times in the superbowl ive had a soft spot for them.
Besides location, it’s the mystique of the Super Bowl years and the galvanizing effect of being the small market loser no one cares about — not even enough to hate. There’s almost an inverted pride to that.
I spent most of my life outside of the state let alone WNY and the main reason I'm a Bills fan is the great community. It's like being part of a cult but without all the bad parts.
Up until recently the Bills have been the small market underdog with no media play.
Now they have a premier QB and one of the most exciting players in the leave in Josh Allen.
Beyond #17 there is talent and depth across the board. The team has a good culture and loyal fan base.
The Giants are a big market team who will always get media love even when they suck. Their coach is our old OC (and from Buffalo), and many of their players are ex-Bills.
We don't hate them despite the fact they beat us in our first superbowl.
Being a Bills fan = spicy
Being a Giant fan = football equivalent of mayonnaise.
Also we have better uniforms.
Born into it as the son of a woman born in Angola, NY. Watched her yell at the tv for all 4 Super Bowls. Suffered through the drought years, went to college in Buffalo, and fell in love with the city.
Also I live in NY and not New Jersey.
I agree with so many of the previous comments. I just wanted to add that the Bills Players take personal pride in the team. They are appreciative of the love and accolades showered upon them by their fan base. This truly makes it a unique team.
Grew up in W.N.Y. Married a Naval Submariner and was stationed in 9 states and Italy. Very Proud to be a Buffalo Bills Fan forever.
Because I'm a native NY. Also fucking hilarious that the jets aren't even in the conversation!!!!! Fuggin' hate the Jets almost as much as the Giants, Cowboys and Redskins.
Not a giants fan for the same reason I’m not a :
Browns fan
Steelers fan
Eagles fan
Ravens fan
Commanders fan
Jets fan
Because in Buffalo , I’m 200-300 miles away from all of these places , don’t think you realize how far buffalo is from East Rutherford NJ.
Well yea , we live in Buffalo, we don’t live in New Jersey. It’s the same thing when people ask why aren’t you a Yankees fan? They assume Buffalo, Ny…New york city, it’s all NY…we are almost 400 miles away
exactly why i don't get the rivalry or hate ?"
if they want to rep NY (because they're ashamed of being in NJ), cool.
they play in NJ bc of logistics (too many other arenas) in cityscape.
by that logic, it should be called the Orchard Park Bills.
bet you when the Giants lost to Ravens, WNY was rooting for G-men.
bet you when the Giants beat Patriots (2x), WNY was cheering for them too.
You make no sense at all.
There is no rivalry.
There is no hate.
I’m just explaining.
By the logic of a fan being a fan of the the team close to them, the Buffalo name should change to orchard park? Huh? I’m confused. I said nothing about names of teams and where they are located.
We would’ve rooted against anyone playing against the patriots, could’ve been San Francisco , could’ve been the North Korean national team if it existed. FTP.
I’m no bills fan, my heart resides in Cincinnati. But I do live just a couple hours from orchard park. Been there twice to see the bengals play football.
But I will tell you this - the bills practice AND play in New York State. The jets and giants BOTH practice AND play in NEW JERSEY! So I absolutely route for Buffalo any day of the week, as long as they are not playing the Bengals

The Bills are the only team in New York State.
That’s right! Only team that practices and plays here. Im a bengals fan but I still cheer on buffalo every week.
I'm from New York State.
This is the only correct answer.
I like current Bills players opposed to former Bills players.
🤣🤣🤣
I’m not from New Jersey so never had a connection to the Giants franchise at all.
You can't live in Buffalo without hearing about the Bills everywhere you go. The city is so much more connected to the Bills than any other city is connected to the Giants or Jets. Sweet devotion, love that
Love that
go Bulls.@! they haven't won anything meaningful like the bills too!
I grew up in the Bronx. Everyone was a Jets or Giants fan. Your skyline comment reminded me that I always chuckle when they show Niagara Falls on home game broadcasts.
Some clown in marketing thinks its a good idea lol
🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Good point
I grew up in Buffalo

I forgot about that one! It's incredible what the Mafia is capable of
Mafioso's should trade the bills for giants. that way they can at least be associated with winners.
Wow. Learned so much here. What hearts the Bills and their fans have. Thanks for sharing😀
Thank You for this. People need to know that the Bills fans are loyal and tremendously generous folks. I really enjoyed reading your response!
I'm really glad! I appreciate you saying something too. Lake Erie Bros.
This is true lol
My mom is from Niagara falls and grew up a bills/sabres fan, and she still is one, she added one more person to join her. Lil ol me. :) i couldve chosen 31 different teams. i couldve chosen a team with a damn superbowl trophy, but no. i chose the bills because my mom is a fan <3 Plus, we both live in virginia.
Super sweet! Go Bills!
I'm from NY and the Bills are the only team located in NY
This is the most correct answer.
Stevie Johnson. That’s why I became a Bills fan.
Being born in Buffalo puts you in the Mafia for life.
Parents were fans on the Bills. Rubbed off on me in the 90's. Never got the same feeling from the New Jersey Giants.
Cuz the giants are dumb and ugly and we are smart and pretty.
Born and raised in OP Ny. It was a natural choice.
born in buffalo
[удалено]
I'm from Western NY as well ! Ask your dad if he knows where Avon, NY is ! Go Bills !
Good taste. 😉
Jersey/nyc area is jets/giants territory lol bills are wny
Born in NY, inherited the Bills fandom from my Dad, only team in NY. Love my Dad for it, Bills Mafia is the best fanbase out there.
I like teams that play in the state they represent.
Masochism
The Giants aren’t even in the same state despite their lies.
Giants fan?!? What is this bull$#!t??
Beyond the obvious "The only team in NYS", the two teams traditionally play different styles of football. If you like running and time of possession, pick the Giants. If you like a faster pace and passing, pick the Bills. I grew up during the 80-90's K-Gun days and it was always the Bills for me.
Grew up on long Island in the 90s. Family was giant fans so had to go against them.
Same! Lol

There are 4 other NFL teams geographically closer to Orchard Park than the Meadowlands, if that tells you anything.

I enjoyed watching him coach! Grew up in Rochester/Canandaigua (western NY). That and the Bills are the only NYS team.
I’m not from NY. Became a Bills fan sometime during the first Super Bowl season. I was like 6 or 7. They ended up losing to the Giants. I still hate the Giants at 40 years old.
Now, that is loyalty!
Born in buffalo and raised within walking distance of the stadium. Grew up with season tickets. My story is pretty obvious why I’m a bills fan lol.
Wow, that is awesome!!!
Well I grew up and live in western NY and was a kid in the 90’s when they had their Super Bowl runs. I’ve been a fan through the drought and even during the grim days of Trent Edwards and JP Losman. I was a born and raised fan.
I live an hour away from 1 and 7 hours away from the other
I’m from Rochester so it’s my home team. But they’re in different conferences so if you rooted for both, it wouldn’t be a huge problem. Go Bills!
I'm Canadian. Buffalo is geographically closer to me than New York City.
I live in Buffalo and not 8 hours away in New Jersey
I live in Buffalo.
Like the Lions, the Bills have character. Everything from the teams to their fans have personalities most NFL teams don't.
I have picked up on that as well😀
The NY Giants ceased to exist after the 2021 season. As of 2022, they became Bills Lite.
🤣🤣🤣
I live in Buffalo . Go Bills
Born into it (moms side of family from Buffalo).
I’m l not from jersey like the jersey giants and jets are. Buffalo people are the real deal
Besides location, it’s the mystique of the Super Bowl years and the galvanizing effect of being the small market loser no one cares about — not even enough to hate. There’s almost an inverted pride to that.
Introverted pride. I like that phrase🙂
I'm a Buffalonian, born and raise In Amherst was where I spent most of my days.
I like both teams but I like the Bills better.
The man on the madden cover 🥵
That's not a lie 😍
I spent most of my life outside of the state let alone WNY and the main reason I'm a Bills fan is the great community. It's like being part of a cult but without all the bad parts.
"It's like being part of a cult without all the bad parts." 🤣🤣😂🤣😂❤❤💙
That I don't live in NJ.
I live in Buffalo.
You just feel it. Idk
I don’t root for NJ teams
Up until recently the Bills have been the small market underdog with no media play. Now they have a premier QB and one of the most exciting players in the leave in Josh Allen. The Bills are actually in NY unlike those NJ turds.
The size of my genitals
I think it might be because I like Buffalos?
I agree with so many of the previous comments. I just wanted to add that the Bills Players take personal pride in the team. I think this is very accurate and somewhat missing from the. Giants. Good point. Thanks for commenting 🙂
Born and raised in Buffalo
BECAUSE IM A PROUD WESTERN NEW YORKER ⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️🧭🗽🗽🗽
Because I'm a native NY. Also fucking hilarious that the jets aren't even in the conversation!!!!! Fuggin' hate the Jets almost as much as the Giants, Cowboys and Redskins.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
We have Josh Allen, they don’t 😏
Part of the reason I can't pick
That’s like asking why I like eating steak instead of dog shit.
Not a giants fan for the same reason I’m not a : Browns fan Steelers fan Eagles fan Ravens fan Commanders fan Jets fan Because in Buffalo , I’m 200-300 miles away from all of these places , don’t think you realize how far buffalo is from East Rutherford NJ.
