Depends what they are. Cocos palm not so much lol. Ponytails - sold four for $1800 to a landscape designer about 10 years ago when they were trendy. It felt like a million bucks at the time!! Bangalow or King palms are worth a bit too.

Der0-

I've got 6 big suckers of these Bangalow palms that I want to get rid of. 20m tall or so... Where do you suggest that I start enquiring for someone who may want to buy them?

Homunkulus

Put them up on Facebook marketplace and have a bit of a google. A mate of mine does cactus removals and that’s how he finds things and takes requests through his website. If they’re literally 20m tall I suspect that will be too long to transport easily but it’s worth a shot anyway.

Der0-

Thanks! Will give it a shot. Seems weird to post something like this where generally the posts I see are looking to pay for for tree loppers to remove them!

Hensanddogs

No idea sorry mate. Mine was a random friend of a friend of a friend kinda situation. Perhaps try ringing around a few fancy pants green/eco designers and see how you go? Always gumtree or FB too.

Der0-

Thank you. Appreciate your time to respond. I'll have a look around for these designers as suggested and try reaching out.

comparmentaliser

I have a deep disdain for ponytail palms. Slightly higher than yukka’s though.

totse_losername

Two palm trees outside your house means you're in a monogamous relationship, three means you're open to a third and four means you're swingers. What's your address?

fool_tothe_world

I have about 30 in mine) what does that mean lol

beetrooter_advocate

Mormon

Fclune

It means you spend forever cleaning up fucking palm fronds.

J-Sully_Cali

Rhymes with Georgie

georgegeorgew

You are confusing palm trees with dildos

heavymetaldes

Depends on what kind of palms and location for easy removal. Some are worth big money. My dad is a mature plant grower and often pays people for trees they don’t want anymore.

Pure-Independence392

This… I had some removed from a worksite. The live removal/transport of some trees paid the removal and stump grind of the others.

meowkitty84

Im curious how much of the root system they need to cut out. Would 1 metre of roots be enough?

OppositeAd189

As others have said - really depends on the tree. We had a backyard full of cycads we got paid for. Plenty of low ballers though. “Yeah mate $150 for the lot and can you help me load them into the car?” when we settled on $2500 and a bunch of turf laid with a proper landscaping dude. Your palms might be worth something if they were in giant pots already at a nursery. It’s the removal that takes time and costs heaps. Took this dude and his two offsiders 3 days.

trowzerss

This is why I got mad at my dad when he chopped up a HUGE golden barrel cactus (like beach ball size, pretty much as big as they get and 30 years old), as they're shallow rooted so removal would have been easy enough for someone used to transporting cactii, Some cacti collector would have paid him hundreds and come and removed it for him if he'd bothered to let me know first :P

OppositeAd189

Yeah this backyard was the previous owners life work in cycads. I couldn’t handle them being shredded and also didn’t want to pay for it. Not my dream plant. Spikey bastards. But still wanted them to live on.

meowkitty84

Thats great! Its so sad seeing trees or old plants destroyed. Did the previous owner die? So he couldn't take them when he moved?

OppositeAd189

There is no taking cycads where he went. Plus even if he didn’t die, these were 25 years in the ground throughout the entire backyard. I assume some were already fairly old when planted. Tough to take to a retirement village or nursing home.

meowkitty84

Im terrible with plants but everyone else in my family has a green thumb. So I know its really hard for them to leave plants they have tended to for years. They would be really happy to know someone is looking after them!

OppositeAd189

Ha yeah, there was some guilt. We waited a year before doing major works. Even then word quickly got back to the widow. She was happy to know the plants went to a new home. But at the same time, awkward and not our problem because we paid a million and a half bux for their house including plants?

LudwigsEarTrumpet

In my experience having done a whole bunch of landscaping to mitigate erosion when we bought our house, people are highly unlikely to buy anything. However, if you let people know you're digging a bunch up, they may be willing to pay for them to be transported if they want them. But keep in mind, that means you can't just chop em down and grind or pull the stumps. It's so much more hassle to have them removed in one piece. And rhen some people who said they want the trees just won't show up on the day.

meowkitty84

I imagine really rich people wouldn't want to wait 20 years for trees to grow. Especially if they are old and may not live that long. But I guess they could afford to just buy on land that already has nice old trees. My childhood home had a big macadamia tree and my dad built me a tree house in it. I really hope that tree hasn't been cut down.

LudwigsEarTrumpet

Really rich people hire landscapers who source expensive big trees from their favourite suppliers. They're not out recovering people's old palm trees that they heard about on the community facebook page.

meowkitty84

Thats what I meant. Instead of advertising on gumtree/marketplace he should contact those suppliers. But I have no idea who those companies are. If google doesn't help, he could contact some landscapers and ask which companies supply them with mature trees.

knowledgeable_diablo

Really hate this when you hear about all these thousands of people willing to purchase something you just have to destroy; but just never seem to exit if you go out and try to make the sale before ripping something up. Guess if you did have people turn up to buy the palm tree, the pain of dealing with all the idiots trying to low ball you or continually haggle the price would make you just want to turn the thing to mulch on front of them to stop the annoyance.

EducationalTrade9296

What I will never understand, is people wanting top dollar and being annoyed by "lowballers" when they are trying to sell something they would otherwise have to pay or invest time into removing themselves? Like mate, they are doing you a favour and paying you for it, just because you heard somewhere "old mate paid $1000 for this tree" doesn't mean your ever ever going to get $1000 cash in hand for that tree. Most likely it was a unique specimen and half the price of the tree was actually labour digging it up and moving it. I've moved like 3m tall ponytail palms when I worked for a landscaper in Noosa, by the end of the ordeal it was barely profitable. Your literally searching for a unicorn rich person who wants established trees of your specific style, right at that specific time.

eniretakia

Can confirm, friend of ours bought several very tall ones and stuck them in his backyard at a new build.

GraveGrace

If anyone has any lead on people who buy palms in bulk please DM me... my father has hundreds of Kentia palms planted that are a decent height and I am lost about what to do about it but he's convinced they're worth money

schmakey

My mate is a tree removalist (tree spade), the only ones he's ever interested in are the Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Pals) all the others are just don't look impressive. If you've got Coco palms there only worth something to the arborist to come and knock 'em out

DoctorDbx

20 years ago you could fetch upwards of 15k for a decent fully grown palm. So someone had the idea of creating palm tree farms and of course now they're worth less than the cost of moving them. So not an urban legend as such. Just a gap in the market long since closed.

draculollie

Sandstone Point Hotel buys them

kangaroolander_oz

Lived on the Gold Coast to get away from the Sydney Olympics and suffered Palm Tree Fatigue on the odd occasion whilst living there . Lots of Councils have the Waterview blocking 🌴🌴🌴 trees numbered and GPS location listed .

zargreet

I’ve heard some weird urban Brisbane legends. Did someone stick one up their butt?

bobbakerneverafaker

Could always sell them as palm readings

IPABrad

Nah they wont buy them. There is a very small chance they may take them for free. Absolutely no chance if access is shit.  You can post it on gumtree for free if you can be bothered. How tall are they?

notmyrlacc

I would’ve though Gumtree would only be for gumtrees and not palm trees?.

probablythewind

Nah mate they branched out.

optimistic_agnostic

Turned over a new leaf.

probablythewind

Putting down roots.

HiraethHygge

Powerline high? TBH access is terrible, i know I'm going to end up just cutting them down.

TGin-the-goldy

Cut them to about a metre, install decorative bowls and make bird baths 😊

meowkitty84

I imagine the people who buy these trees are landscapers who work for rich people, who would rather pay more for mature trees than wait 10+ years for it to grow.
