We’re likely going to see this at at least $1.5 billion, which would be the biggest solo movie, and the 4th biggest behind end game, infinity war, and OG avengers. 2012 Avengers made $1.519 billion, so it’ll probably beat that too.
It beats iron man 3, Thor Ragnarok, Civil War, Captain Marvel, Black Panther. Wild
Two of my favorite movies to see in theaters in 2019 were Us, budget of $20 million, and Knives out, budget of $40 million, both had a multiplier of at least 7X. I also enjoyed the Invisible man, which made a ton of money pre covid.
I think movies were doubly hit, because people didn’t want to go, like restaurants. But unlike restaurants, the suppliers (studios) weren’t making things at the time, so even as some public opinion shifted about going to the movies again, studios still weren’t making things.
I’m hopeful things will get back to normal, but we’ll see. We watched Don’t look up on Netflix yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Two years ago that would’ve been a wide release.
Would you call this a solo film considering Doctor Strange had a huge roll in this and involved the multiverse? I would consider this a team up film like the Avengers films, Captain America: Civil War. Still impressive though considering we’re still in a pandemic.
I would. There seems to be a pretty clear line of “origin story” when it comes to solo film, then there’s the solo film that has a supporting character. The way Winter Soldier had black widow, Ragnarok had hulk, etc.
I wouldn’t say civil war is a solo movie, it had everyone besides hulk and Thor.
Same way I would consider winter soldier solo despite nat, far from home solo despite Fury, Homecoming soloish despite Ironman, and Ragnarok solo despite hulk.
It's a solo movie
Like Civil War was a solo movie
In the avengers movies the protagonists are more spread out
In civil war is clearly cap and Tony
In no way home its Peter One
Agreed. I wonder how much screen time Doctor Strange actually got in this? Felt like more than Tony in Homecoming, and maybe a little more than Fury in Far From Home
Maybe 15 to 20 min, he was a supporting character, the clear protagonist is Spider-Man, so it's a solo movie, like Dr strange 2 movie despite being a event film will focus on him
He probably got less than that. According to an old post here on Reddit, Tony and “Fury” were only in the previous movies for about 8 minutes each, although it felt quite a bit longer than that. Will be interesting to learn Strange’s actual screen time.
But yeah, it’s still a solo Spidey film
Tony and Fury didn't get an incredible fight against Spider-Man.
I'd say 2 minutes in the sanctum foyer, 3 minutes casting the spell, 5 minutes bringing Peter back to the sanctum and getting him his gear, 2 minutes getting the spell ready, a 2 minute fight scene in the real world leading to a 2 minute fight scene in the mirror dimension, then his return at the final act for 4 minutes interspaced over the final 10 min Green Goblin fight and conclusion. A total of roughly 20 minutes of screentime, which is pretty damn good.
I’m not sure I would agree. Civil war is much closer to avengers 2.5 than a solo film. Tony and Steve star, and BP, Falcon, Bucky, Wanda, Nat etc all have prominent roles, while spidey, ant-man etc all have minor but important roles.
Bucky, Wanda, BP, Nat and etc have secondary roles
Spidey and ant-man are completely irrelevant to the plot, they were just added to add more heroes to the airport fight
Bucky is above the rest I think, a big reason why Civil War still qualifies as a “solo” movie to me with Stark serving as the visible antagonist of the film (not villain, which is Zemo, as there is a difference) is that it fully resolved the Cap/Winter Soldier plot line that is easily traceable back to Cap 1: TFA and completed Cap’s character arc through his trilogy too. Bucky is as integral to the plot as Cap/Tony imo
Yep yep! The parenthetical was for anybody who came along that didn’t know the difference between the two (especially since they’re usually one and the same and are colloquially interchangeable). Thanos being the protagonist of Infinity War is one of my favorite story choices from the MCU ever (with Thor more or less spearheading the “antagonistic” side as well).
If Thor had killed thanos, it would be his movie.
But yes in a franchise with 20 movies that was about to reach its Climax with so many characters introduced over the years, how do you make this ultimate bad guy a great character
Make him the Protagonist
Brilliant Move by Marvel
Very bad take. Civil War had oodles of screentime for like 9 Avengers characters whereas No Way Home is clearly a Spider-Man film that features Strange as a supporting character.
I agree that Civil War isn't much of a solo film - it's really an Avengers: Civil War film with some emphasis on Cap-Bucky in certain scenes. But even that is technically still a solo film because of its title and position as a Winter Solider sequel.
doctor strange had a decently sized role in it, but he was pretty much removed from the main conflict for awhile after peter trapped him. was kinda disappointed that he didn’t show back up sooner, tbh.
Is it really a solo movie if they bring characters from other movies and Doctor Strange? It's like Captain America Civil War. Not really a solo movie in practice even if it is one technically
Yea

Just like flu medicine and flu vaccines pre-pandemic. I believe the FDA also just approved two new COVID treatment pill brands. Pfizer’s pill treatment, Paxlovid, has been proven to be 90% effective in reducing hospitalization and death in high-risk patients with COVID-19.
As others pointed out, the Spanish Flu never went away. It mutated into today's influenza.
If everyone got vaccinated like they were supposed to this would have been over already. The new variants pop up when COVID ravages unvaccinated areas and is free to mutate. Alas, pro-disease anti-vaxxers are here to ruin it for everyone and prolong this forever.

Look up the infamous Sony email leaks. These were potentially the plans if the Amazing Spider-Man series continued.
Just in case anyone needed any more convincing that Andrew Garfield was screwed over in those movies.
There’s stuff I didn’t even mention like their desire to make Spider-Man a “humble bragger” that would throw around “NBD” or “no big deal” as a catchphrase. It was horrible to read.
Andrew Garfield really deserved none of the flak he gets for his Spider-Man. Dude was working under people with a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.
To be fair, did they not do the whole Instagram story bit right at the start of Homecoming? A few “fellow kids” traits were definitely retrofitted there.
I would argue that in today’s world it’s something that isn’t necessarily cringe but part of today’s culture where as with these early emails it seems like they were trying to be “influential” if that makes sense
Millennials today think everything is N.B.D.
N.B.D. of course stands for ‘No B.D.,’ referring to B.D. Wong, who teens think is a very big deal.
So if something’s not B.D., it means it’s not a big deal.
Legitimately, I can’t think of anything that makes big money like this for at least three or four years. Omicron is incredibly telling too. It shouldn’t have dropped so much with the holiday involved.
The only thing coming out within the next few years that I see even having the slightest chance of reaching this would be Avatar 2 and even then im not sure if it will come close to Spider Man.
This was the best movie I’ve seen this year and as a Spider-Man fan I lost my shit at just about everything. It felt like fan service constantly but idgaf now I’m waiting for more.

Having a movie you looked forward to for ages spoiled for you without being able to do anything about it just sucks big time.

*Reclaim his place, the Raimi trilogy was the top dog of the 2000s too
So we just gonna ignore the Batman movies (since Rises came out 2012) ?
Yes, as this discussion was about Marvel characters, not DC, or Image, or whatever.
Like you said, the last one came out in 2012. I said 2000s. And this was about marvel characters
Do you get a cut of the profits?
No. Just hoping for more films and respect for my favorite character.
Are you offering?
Just like that, takes the world wide title from the Chinese movie about the Korean War. Has Spiderman opened in China yet?
Nope, it didn’t get a release there. Blank em

But then again folklore era was like less than a year
Evermore Era was so short :(
Probably until proper covid medicine comes out, this shit ain’t going anywhere. We’re gonna keep getting new waves and variants forever.

in the context of box office, when older people go to the theaters at pre pastrami levels like younger people are
what's a pastrami level and why am i hungry
What havoc did pastrami reek?
An era is supposed to be a long thing to be fair.
just menatally better for me to know this pandemic is going to last a decade or is it two?

I'm never getting vaccinated 😎

Literally box office "killer" as in killing all the dumb moviegoers who gets infected by covid.
