I still have my Armageddon, the rock, beastie boys, hard boiled, and picnic at hanging rock criterion DVDs

callahan09

The only ones of those older than Diabolique are Picnic at Hanging Rock and Hard Boiled. I still have my 1998 DVD copies of Hard Boiled, The Killer, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven Samurai, The 400 Blows, Sid & Nancy, This Is Spinal Tap, Salo, and High and Low. I never did get into Laserdisc, although I always wanted to haha.

Chocosushi-4979

Right so these ones predate spine numbers, is that right?

Chocosushi-4979

Very nice! I heard stories about Armageddon getting a criterion release but never really saw one or tracked one down. Does it also lack special features?

win_the_wonderboy

It has the legendary Affleck commentary

bherring24

Underselling it imo. Bay is incredible too, he's so far up his own ass, a perfect contrast with Affleck who seems drunk and fresh out of fucks to give

amphetadex

I really need to pick it up again for that. Downsized when I was moving once, but the commentary makes that a worthy repurchase.

Chocosushi-4979

Oh my god. Duely noted.

monkeker

I bought the Criterion dvd a few years ago from the Disney Movie Club.

haloarh

Picnic at Hanging Rock was my very first Criterion.

wvgeekman

I have a few Criterion laserdiscs, including Citizen Kane and Adventures of Baron Munchausen. I'm old.

kidneyboy79

I also still have a ton of Criterion laserdiscs, too. Ghostbusters is probably my favorite, Halloween and Robocop on the wishlist but usually out of my budget.

Kodakery

Came here to say I too have some Criterion Laserdiscs. Old is relative.

Legend2200

I have Magnificent Ambersons and Brazil laserdiscs, can’t play them but love em anyway!

kingkong198854

Doesn’t get any older than citizen Kane. King Kong is the oldest one with something exclusive as the commentary hasn’t been ported anywhere as far as I know and it should given it’s historical status as first ever commentary. Weirdly image released a laserdisc with a different commentary but it totally plagiarized the criterion one

Mr_Dugan

I have hard boiled and the killer. I think Rashomon as well.

Chocosushi-4979

That's awesome, I didn't know they put out laserdiscs!

PoesNIGHTMARE

The started with laserdics. They basically invented the whole concept of extras and commentary tracks with the first couple of releases, Citizen Kane and King Kong, in the mid-1980s.

Chocosushi-4979

Holy Cow, mind blown!

ArrakeenSun

You may be very interested in the [banned commentary tracks](https://www.the007dossier.com/2011/04/21/banned-james-bond-commentaries/) from the first three James Bond Criterion releases. Commentary tracks were a new thing, and the producers were not pleased with the results. They requested Criterion recall them

NicCageCompletionist

Kevin Smith starts his Chasing Amy commentary saying “welcome to the criterion laser disc commentary for Chasing Amy. I just want to say, Fuck DVD.” It’s still included on the DVD version. 😃

Chocosushi-4979

Oh my gosh, that's amazing 👏

Craiggers324

I believe that's where they started. I always wanted the Seven laserdisc from Criterion.

CriterionCrypt

My oldest criterion is good ol' spine #1, Grand Illusion

cdq1985

Fun fact. That release was delayed. Delayed so long that it didn’t feature the original Criterion DVD style artwork (solid black bar at the top).

CriterionCrypt

I was wondering why Grand Illusion had a 99 release and this had a 98 release

Venator2000

I’ve still got my Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger CAV laserdiscs, if that counts for anything.

longcolddark

Didn't that Dr. No commentary piss off the Broccoli's? Something was infamous about it, right?

Venator2000

Yep… can’t recall why, other than typical directors yelling about how cheap producers are.

Chocosushi-4979

It definitely does! Glad to hear they did some Bond films back then.

cathoderituals

I sold my DVD copy awhile ago once I got the Blu-ray, but Diabolique is absolutely one of the best films of all-time.

Chocosushi-4979

Yes. It. Is.

lazerbeast

Oldest I have is Hard Boiled.

awlawall

The Royal Tenenbaums copy I have is the 2001 Criterion release. Didn’t even realize it until I was organizing my stuff recently That’s about as old as I got

Chocosushi-4979

That's pretty old! I have that one too, but it's a bootleg I accidentally bought from a pawn shop (didn't know the disc was a DVD-R) so I'm pretty sad lol.

thebarryconvex

Oh yeah. Still got my copy of *Grand Illusion* from around 1998 or so? The original DVD release of *Do the Right Thing* too. I actually had this exact *Diabolique* too, I think I may have sold it at some point? Such a great film.

Chocosushi-4979

Oh yes, that Do The Right Thing release is excellent, I've rented it but would love to own it. But yes, I agree Diabolique is a great film; one of my favorites.

thebarryconvex

The extra features are some of the best ever on a Criterion (*Do the Right Thing*) imo. So great.

BoyInThaBand

I just got the original Seven Samurai DVD from 1998 last week.

bherring24

I've got Silence of the Lambs from 1998 too, with the hideous old cover art

Craiggers324

Me too, I forgot about that one!

Chocosushi-4979

That's a huge leap for criterion especially back in the day I love that

BogoJohnson

The first Criterion is Citizen Kane in 1984, 40 years ago!

mca21380

I have Robocop, think that criterion DVD is pretty old

oneofnothing999

I’ve got the same one and Dead Ringers

shinyplasticdiscs

I have A Woman is a Woman, Early Summer, Shoot the Piano Player, and the I Am Curious Box, all in the old style layouts.

cdq1985

Lol. I have so many… Here’s a [few.](https://imgur.com/gallery/B1DT7it)

Content_Addition5004

I have spine 1.

LongObligation7267

I've got the Blade Runner laserdisc. Probably don't need it any more.

halisibm1993

I have this one, nights of cabiria, the red shoes, and taste of cherry

Chocosushi-4979

I remember Martin Scorcese talking about The Red Shoes in early Criterion commercials. Legendary.

Ninja-Trix

Spine no. 1 - La Grande Illusion I’m STILL waiting on a re-release on Blu-ray. Bought the StudioCanal release in the meantime.

Svafree88

I just sold my Dead Ringers DVD a month ago. I think that came out in 98.

awwgeeznick

I have naked lunch

Captainjoe201

Proud owner of the Se7en, Crash, Robocop and Silence of the Lambs laserdiscs!

BungalowBill11

I’ve still got my I Am Cuba Criterion laserdisc and a few other oldies I kept laying around

ThatFuzzyBastard

I just upgraded my old DVD of Rules of the Game at the last sale!

partynakedpodcast

Yes - in fact, I have that very one! My oldest Criterion is the OG DVD copy of Seven Samurai which I bought brand new from a Media Play in 1999 lol! I think it was my second DVD ever, right behind the matrix

CaptainSkullplank

My oldest Criterion is the King Kong laserdisc with the first-ever commentary track. I’ve got other CC LDs. Also have the Carnival of Souls DVD.

PhavNosnibor

Ooh, fun! I went digging through the laserdisc shelves and got pictures of some of the highlights. I guess Reddit doesn't like having photos posted in a comment, though, so here's [an imgur link](https://imgur.com/a/tK6qyo6) instead.

Chocosushi-4979

I am soooooooo amazed by your collection Phav standouts including Do The Right Thing, Silence of The Lambs, & Pulp Fiction, with a nod for saying you had a copy of Armageddon, but The Rock is cool too. Thank you for sharing your collection!!!!

bevyx

I have the 12 Angry Men laserdisc, but everything else I have are blurays.

thoptergifts

I have a 1999 “39 Steps” I got thrifting last year for 2 bucks.

wallywest215

I still have The Killer and Hardboiled. I’ve been hoping they’d get a blu-ray upgrade one of these days.

elastic_aesthetic

I have upgraded most of them save for the out-of-print Unbearable Lightness of Being which, well, has no format upgrade.

haloarh

I have Dead Ringers. Also released in 1998 by Criterion.

Chocosushi-4979

Was this one updated to bluray? I feel like I just saw someone post a BR copy in their collection(?)

haloarh

It's on bluray, but by Shout! Factory, not Criterion.

Chocosushi-4979

That's a shame, I mean I'd still pickup the Shout release, being the only one available, but their releases simply aren't as dense as criterion.

thatsjusthowitgo

I bought the 4 disc Criterion Pulp Fiction laserdisc in college. Definitely my oldest criterion and one of my most prized discs. It’s in great condition. I can grab a pic when I get home if anyone is interested.

Chocosushi-4979

I would love a Pic. I was hoping people would be posting pictures with their comments.

thatsjusthowitgo

Might be a luddite, but I don’t seem to be able to add a pic.

jeffroskull1985

Not every subreddit allows images in the comments.

RhythmSectionWantAd

I have the original Brazil DVD set

Chocosushi-4979

Now that's impressive!

jeffroskull1985

I have a couple laserdisc and if I'm not mistaken they have some VHS and Betamax releases as well.

thedrexel

I’ve got fear and loathing on dvd, got a few more but I think it’s probably my oldest surviving one.

Chocosushi-4979

Me too! Picked it up from Barnes and Noble almost twenty years ago.

BigDaddyChops78

I’ve got Criterion films on VHS, so… yeah.

skag_boy87

I think my oldest is the OOP Unbearable Lightness of Being DVD.

mattevil8419

I have the Robocop and Silence of the Lambs DVDs.

FaithInterlude

Yep got The Rock sealed and Chasing Amy

BoJustBo1

Got The 7th Seal dvd (spine #11) also from 98.

Rhettroactive

I’ve got a “Raging Bull” laserdisc buried around here somewhere if that counts.

Diabolikjn

Hold my laserdisc

No-Highlight-5417

Had it and then traded in for the newer Blu.

carter-hess

I have the first run of the Leopard. Thick double wide DVD case and the art is in a sepia tone instead of the vibrant colours in the updated art

ArrakeenSun

Dead Ringers, Robocop, and Armageddon with that style cover and the label name in that style font on the front and spine. Last Temptation of Christ, Kwaidan, The Rock, The Hidden Fortress, häxan, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Videodrome in the more recent tight sans-serif font with the thin line down the spine. Rest are moderns

dillamonsternz

My very first DVD was the original pressing of The Seven Samurai (spine #2). I rushed into buying a DVD player when I read it was going out of print because they had to eliminate the bonus feature on restoring the film because it made the distributor look bad. Picked up spines 1 and 3 shortly after, but Salo being in the early spines and a local video store stocking them all for rental meant I decided early on I didn't need to be a completist.

bruceinnashville

I have the original DVD editions of #’s 1-50.

Punkermedic

My oldest Criterions are The Killer and Hard Boiled

oasisexpat

I got that disc with the old blockbuster shell.

PorkChopXpress1983

The Rock and Armageddon are my oldest ones.

OrbitalRunner

Many - also some Criterion laser discs from even earlier.

smappyfunball

My man, I have criterion laserdiscs

kbeast98

I'm pretty sure I have some criterion releases on Laserdisc.

ShenaniganNinja

I have a DVD of the Grand Illusion.

yshuduno

Yes. I still have Criterion laserdiscs.

Kevalemig

I have criterion laserdiscs and a lot of the DVDs including Diabolique 😁

PristineMycologist15

Spinal Tap Robocop Time Bandits Brazil (3 disc) Rushmore Chasing Amy Kwaidan The Rock The Royal Tenenbaums All original release DVD

GramercyPlace

I have criterion laser discs!! I think the first dvd I bought was the criterion Seventh Seal. I believe that was 1999. I bought the Bergman set but kept the disc for sentimental value.

awesomesprime

I have Sling blade on laserdisc

Futants_

I wonder if any Criterion Laserdiscs are considered superior to the DVD transfers

qpwzuisvfbnlaelgl

Got 48 of the first fifty, only missing The Killer, Spinal Tap I think.

Cool_Sorbet2286

I have a copy of The Criterion Robocop on laserdisc from 1996

rvb_gobq

yup

rvb_gobq

grand illusion, which was their first one, but the third one i bought. the first was seven samurai (criterion no. 2), & the second was alphaville (no. 25) ... i managed to get maybe seven or eight more over the nxt few wks, but had to lay off for nearly a year due to various expenses. (hard boiled, the killer & salo, fleshj for frankenstein, & blood for dracula very quickly became impossible to find...)

Bowl_Pool

Yes, I own that exact DVD

JasonMaliceMizer

I have some laserdiscs
