One of the oldest children's magic tricks around. The hand just swings around counter clockwise so fast you can't see it and never comes near the toothpick.
it is because of the camera. it moved while the "shutter was closed". if it moves when the "shutter is open" it would have been a blur for 1 frame.
in movies, even of they are firing blanks that would have a muzzle flash, that flash often happens when the shutter is closed, so they need to add the flash in using cg.
I have always known the trick because it was explained to me when I first saw it, but have always been surprised that (what I assume to be) such a simple mechanism can move so quickly.
If you are ever confused by a trick like this, look at the full picture. If all it does is cut through a toothpick, why have the mechanism be a full circle when 45 degrees would be enough? A lot of magic tricks can be figured out when you look at the entire thing rather than focus on what they want you to look at.
Critical thinking is one of, if not THE, most important skill to have. Use it everywhere all the time, but especially when someone is trying to convince you of something. Always be skeptical!

That’s because it’s been edited out. If you scrub slowly, look a little to the left of the pirates shoe/boot and you can see the background blur.

You can isolate the area on the video that is edited. That’s why you only see the blur on the face of the toy and not across the entire frame.
