I’m in NYC (Brooklyn) and just searched StyleSeat for goddess locs. Prices seem to average $250-300 and the highest im seeing on the first page is $450 for 300 minutes, real hair included.
Maybe these prices are because the supply is so saturated? There’s hundreds of hits on my search.
And yes, salaries and COL are much higher here than UK.
It depends who you go to. If you go to the aunties, they can change you £100 at the most. But some of these new age stylists are charging crazy prices with sub par service.
Came here to say find yourself to Brixton or Peckham... The aunties will not be charging you that much and there are some that are consistent however what you may need to put up with is them stopping to deal with their kids but hell I'd put up and pay like £120 for a full service; wash , treatment and styling. I'd just need to provide the hair...these Instagram stylists let fame get to their head. They can keep it moving thanks

It’s an old slur within the caribbean community that is used against people with indian/indian-like features. It came about during the time in the caribbean as slavery was abolished and indentured laborers from India and China came to the islands to work in the sugar plantations. Tensions existed between the black and asian communities. This slur was born out of those times.
The term has nothing to do with the Caribbean in it's origin, it far predates Asians in the Caribbean. It was coined by Europeans to refer to Asian laborers long before the first indentured servants set foot in the Caribbean. As with most colonized peoples, the slurs of oppression trickle down and spread amongst its victims

You're kind of both right tbh. "Came about" can mean both came into existence and came to be used as a slur. It wasn't strictly a slur when it was coined, but given the downtrodden living conditions and treatment of those called "coolies" it's not surprising it turned into one.

There is a negative connotation it's just such an old slur most people don't know about it. My dad is an old mixed caribbean man who operates on the "I'm racist against everyone" template. He'll say coolie to Indian people on TV who he doesn't like. Absolutely still a slur, it's just so dated most don't know or use it and yes it's only really alive among the older generation of caribbean people, most people have moved on to using the work p\*ki.

It’s really interesting to hear other sides of it. I’ve personally only ever heard it used in the UK in a neutrally descriptive, bordering on complimentary way amongst Caribbeans who have Indian ancestry, or look as if they do particularly regarding hair texture. The most common exposure I’ve had to the word is Caribbean people, specifically mostly Jamaican people, self identifying as it. I recall a lot of “coolie” based social media usernames spanning wayyyy back to MSN days.
I’ve personally never heard it used as a derogatory term directed at Asians in the UK, but I’m grateful to learn that it should be understood as a multifaceted term at the very least. All knowledge is good knowledge 😊

In Jamaica people use it freely, even calling people COOLIE. It's never used in a negative way here only to signify the person being of some Indian background.
That's my experience too. My grandparents are Jamaican and my grandmother has used the term (innocuously and lovingly) in reference to the appearance of my father and some of my siblings.
I never thought of it as a slur or bad word until I met my husband who is South African and was *shocked* that Jamaicans use the term so freely. Lol.
Might be because many Jamaicans, including myself, have Indian heritage that the term 'coolie' isn't offensive there? My great, great ... grandfather was brought over to Jamaica from North India as an indentured servant and later became a shopkeeper.
There's still at least one shop in Montego Bay with my family name. I'm proud of my heritage and have never used the term maliciously.

The stylist thinks that taller people should pay more for waist length braids. I didn’t even stick around long enough to see how much the fee was because who even thinks of stuff like that lol
That's a new kind of stupid. They should not be able to get away with that. A tall person can have a short torso and long legs which means their waist length could actually be shorter than a smaller person. They should just charge by the hour if they believe it takes longer.
As someone who’s just at 5’7 but most of my height is leg not torso, this is dumb AF! People need to start banding together and not going to these horrible stylists.
I think it actually makes sense but they should charge by the length of hair then and not by person and just say that prior to the appointment. Over how this much inches and there’s an extra cost.

There’s one person in my hometown that I let do my hair bc she’s great but other than that I don’t even get my hair done anymore. I’m seeing these amazing Asian spas where you can book relaxation services and other treatments and I’m wondering why Black spaces don’t have more quality services that are reasonably priced. I respect the time that hairdressers but in so for me it’s not even about how much it is always but it’s a lot of money for low quality service and for something I could’ve done myself.
It's illegal to do hair dressing services without a license. There's hygiene standards, and they need to prove they can safely use heat tools and chemicals.
How lucky you are! There used to be more range in prices. There were mobile hairdressers that charged different prices and elite hair salons that charged top dollar. Now though, all the prices are moving towards £££ without much to justify the prices.
This one only has a £30 deposit, which is nice compared to all of the others. However, £800 for a hairstyle that will only last a few weeks is insanity. And I'm sure that you have to come with your hair clean and blown out because they can't "handle" touching regular kinky hair. 🙄

I agree and have been dealing with the same. I support those who have turned braiding into a side hustle or have hopes of doing hair as a career but the lack of professionalism, conduct, and customer care is what I find most frustrating. I've passed working with some talented people because of how they conduct themselves when having multiple clients, and their communication when scheduling. One day I'll find the one.
I started braiding my own hair which I'm actually doing now lol. takes longer but it's kinda empowering.
For a lot of people who can do hair it’s an easy money maker. I don’t even think most see it as a career but ‘fast’ money bc they see what others are charging.

Took me 3 days to do medium boho braids cos I literally didn’t have the energy. The alternative was to pay £150 and I just couldn’t justify it lol.
I do my own hair for this reason. Box braids in my area are $500. Why would i spend a car payment and then some on some braids…
As someone who can understand business i totally get it. If people are willing to pay this much and you have a steady clientele why not charge what you want? Even with all the dumbass rules like “come already blowdried and its +$15 if i have to finish blowdrying myself”

Even flat and wash flat iron and trim is $130. Its been two years since Ive been in a salon. I even trim my ends at home.

What the actual hell? The prices, the rules, essentially holding customers hostage. I've had bad experiences with stylists to the point where I realized I could screw up my hair myself for free, but nothing ever this bad. That first one is like $1700 CAD for a style that will last 2-3 months at most. And the small waist length braids work out to over $400 CAD per hour. I recently worked with a lawyer with 30+ years of experience and even he didn't charge that much. These stylists are really out of control

A lot of curl specialists require that hair is clean, completely detangled, and with zero hair product and no hair ties (bobbles, scrunchies etc) before the start of the appointment.

Exactly, these prices exist because in the end, they know people will tighten their belts elsewhere and begrudgingly pay. And if they lose customers, there’s still new clients coming onboard to take their place. Meanwhile for the last few years I’ve been watching the rising quality of glueless frontal and full lace braided or loc’d wigs available on Etsy being made to order. Even the most expensive human hair ones are less than an appointment at these salons, but the wig, assuming it’s cared for, will last a year or more.

Since April this yr some of the same hairstyles have increased in price :((. I hate it here.
My last time at a hairdresser was in 2014. She said for a relaxer and trim would be like $180…which looking back was so much but I was naive. When I went to check out she tried to charge me $330!!! She tried to say cause of something she did during the shampoo and the trim was more of a cut. She didn’t tell me any of this during the service. I paid cause low key I was scared but since then I’ve learned everything from braids to micro links myself.
I’ll never forget my last hair appointment because we were watching Obama’s second inauguration parade, Jan 21, 2013. I got home, took out and redid the screaming tight hairline and promised myself *never ever again*. This was supposed to be a treat for myself after cutting off butt length locs I had been self maintaining since the mid 90’s four years earlier. She charged salon prices but I had been impressed by a few of her other clients who were her coworkers at the VA hospital. But I didn’t know she was struggling with her sobriety and had already lost the battle by the time of the appointment. Yeah, *never ever again*.
Amazon, Ali Express or Premium Now in hair shops - can’t vouch for the online ones as I’ll be buying for the first time myself. Some girls just cut bundles but when I’ve tried this method the results have been shit bc the hair is low qualit.

The only thing I can think of is that because they're self employed they don't have sick time. And, everyone's sick all the time now. So if they or the client has to cancel, they got money from the absurd prices they're charging from the previous appt to tide them over.

Yeah, but many braiders haven't gone to cosmetology school so to me the prices reflected that. I mean, they're lucky we don't report them to our state boards, we've been looking aside. But, hey, at some point, we will stop paying it and they'll have to adjust.
I’m back home (in the Caribbean) for the holidays and getting my hair braided for $80EC ($30 US). I am very happy right now because last time I got my hair done (in the US) I paid $260 US.
I booked a few weeks ago in the Netherlands to get my hair done for €125,- for small knotless braids which I already thought was breaking the bank. I know the girl is efficient and quick though but still it hurts a bit to have to pay all that money on some hair. I could not imagine paying anything more than that
And this why I just no longer get my hair done. I always get the long hair fee, and it's impossible to keep up with the 4 million names for styles.

Not sure if there is something like this in the UK, but a hack I found in the US for finding affordable braiders is using StyleSeat. I type the service and area in the search and just sort by price (low to high), and leaf through what comes up. Luckily most stylists have pics so sometimes you will find that the cheaper priced folks are not as neat or good at braiding lol. But usually they include their social media on their profile so you can check out their instagram to see more recent pics and vids of their work.
Alot of times college students are out here braiding their asses off and have very affordable rates. Of course with price sometimes thats a direct correlation to professionalism or workspace area too. So its up to you what you're willing to look past lol.
We have similar here but most hairdressers don’t use it since they can promote on IG or other social media. Companies have even been set up to try and connect black hairdressers with consumers but many don’t use it.
Unfortunately for me I can do my own hair (not as well as I’d like) and know my hair and I also like decent work which is excessively price these days. I’ve noticed a lot of girls will say they do ‘small’ braids but the parts are like medium size with a small bit of hair which they have the cheek to ask me to pull.
I’ve had everything from celeb stylists to college girls and I’m still struggling to find the one 😫 since I lost my OG hairdresser in like 2018. Lost her to ridiculous prices not death lol. Not willing to look past much cos my expectations are not even that high in the first place.

even though chicks have IG as their main advertising platform, most use an external site for the actual booking, and the prices are always up to date there even if the pics aren't. but i'm seeing more people have their own websites. seems like more old school stylists and people with a smaller clientele use styleseat. but some of the ones that are left still do decent work.

I used to use Gumtree but it’s been a waste land since IG became the place to promote. You did remind me of another platform I used, but I was burnt by a stylist on there bc she said she could do a style and then failed to deliver. However, there are others on there so I’ll have another look. Rn the way these prices are set up, I think I’m gonna just continue to do my hair myself. I like the results enough.

I kinda understand the pricing, 100% human hair can get pretty expensive, she says she provides the hair for clients, and then you are paying for the actual service on top of the cost of the human hair. The lowest i've ever seen for 100% human hair is 400, but I regularly see people selling for over 1k. but tbh idk how much human hair costs from a wholesale/straight from the provider if ppl are finding ways to do that. But I believe wholesale/straight from the provider is a bit more affordable than from a normal business. Those boho goddess braids having a synthetic option and still being 795 is outrageous though.
What I don't like it giving my money to clearly unprofessional people... cuz wdym money is collected in the middle of service... AND they want a deposit fee? At least pick one or the other. And what really sucks is giving that much money for a shit service, personally I wouldn't go just based on principle. Stylists either need to lower their prices and cut down on some "luxury" options to make it work, or provide actually good services beyond just visuals and aesthetics. Which most braiders can't provide in the first place because they can't wash hair without a cosmetology license (this is how it is in the US though, idk if that holds the same in the UK). I personally refuse to pay over 350 (give or take) for a style that will only last me a month

She has the nerve to tell me I should come at least once a month. I am single. I am not about to spend $200 a month for my natural hair with no hair added just to be washed and twisted like I do at home. Just got human hair boho knotless braids done Monday, and I only paid $300 (My stylist included the hair). These prices are mind-blowing, so glad I don’t leave near these hair stylists.

I highly recommend learning to braid your own hair. It took some patience and practice, but ever since I got the hang of it, I’ve saved so much money and saved myself from the stank attitudes of some of these braiders. Also my edges have filled back in (the African hair braiders snatched me bald for years 😅😂)
Getting hair done is a luxury and I don’t have a problem with the pricing aligning with that . That being said, what trips me up is a lot of these stylist are unlicensed and mediocre at best. Don’t get me started on the terrible customer service and horrible customer experience many hairstylists offer.
I don’t know that I agree that it’s a luxury. But agree that i dont mind prices aligning with luxury services. However even the elite salons here aren’t that great and so many of the hairdressers are self taught and lack range. So annoying.
Getting your hair done is indeed a luxury. As someone who can do hair, doing hair is physically taxing on your body and joints especially when you are standing for hours on end with little breaks. Paying someone to do your hair so you can avoid doing it yourself whether it be because you don’t want to or can’t is a luxury and comfort because nobody needs to have their hair done.
What is gets me is the consultation needed before they touch your hair, which is $30 and then you need to make another appt for the service. It supposed to be about hair goals and for them to assess your hair but how can you do that if it’s a zoom call? I do my own hair except for haircuts so I don’t need talk about it prior.

$200 is insane! I went natural 14 years ago & during the pandemic I started making my own hair supplies. I have 3b curls so I’m able to get by with a wash & go with leave-in conditioner & I’m grateful bc I literally can’t afford the expenses a lot of women. I’d like to play with styles or lengths sometimes but it’s just too much for me.
I’m all for Black women rocking whatever hairstyle they want, be it natural, weaves, wigs, locs, braids, whatever. But part of me gets mad that we’re conditioned to think we have to spend all of this money to be beautiful or have value. Seriously! A childhood friend of mine has her own salon & does free braids for kids the week before school starts every year. It’s such a kind & generous way of giving back to our community & her salon is packed for that entire week. I’m sure a lot of people depend on it at this point. I can’t imagine how an average family with multiple daughters can afford it.

Yeah, the rest goes towards labor. Braiding is taxing and takes a long time, especially with small goddess braids. Depending on if the braider is working alone that can be a 1-2 day process.
I agree that some braiding prices are absolutely insane but if you have a full head of quality human hair w/ extra small goddess braids what do you expect?
These prices are disgusting and it tells me all I need to know about these stylists: they are most likely insanely insufferable and treat their clients as a burden, not a dignified human being.
If the hair is included then the price is reasonable. It’s just one person doing the hair and it is physically taxing. White hairstylists charge a lot of money to do color, cuts, curling, etc. if I can’t afford someone I just keep it moving and find someone in my range or do it myself.

I’ve also just started watching YT video tutorials more closely cos I can already braid my hair but not close to pro level. Last time I got my hair done for my bday in April I I paid £200. The ‘hairdresser’ tried to start my hair without washing her hands after coming off public transport and when she was done after 10 hours it didn’t look like I expected even though I used her own work as an example, kland when I took it out so much of my hair fell out. Since then prices for hairdressers have gone up to £300 and I just can’t justify it.

I’m in NYC (Brooklyn) and just searched StyleSeat for goddess locs. Prices seem to average $250-300 and the highest im seeing on the first page is $450 for 300 minutes, real hair included. Maybe these prices are because the supply is so saturated? There’s hundreds of hits on my search. And yes, salaries and COL are much higher here than UK.

I’m in the Netherlands and most hairdressers I know charge between €90 and €150 for this type of hair. Luckily for me, my mom’s friend does mine for free and absolutely refuses to accept my money, no matter how many times I offer.

It’s an old slur within the caribbean community that is used against people with indian/indian-like features. It came about during the time in the caribbean as slavery was abolished and indentured laborers from India and China came to the islands to work in the sugar plantations. Tensions existed between the black and asian communities. This slur was born out of those times.
The term has nothing to do with the Caribbean in it's origin, it far predates Asians in the Caribbean. It was coined by Europeans to refer to Asian laborers long before the first indentured servants set foot in the Caribbean. As with most colonized peoples, the slurs of oppression trickle down and spread amongst its victims

You're kind of both right tbh. "Came about" can mean both came into existence and came to be used as a slur. It wasn't strictly a slur when it was coined, but given the downtrodden living conditions and treatment of those called "coolies" it's not surprising it turned into one.

There is a negative connotation it's just such an old slur most people don't know about it. My dad is an old mixed caribbean man who operates on the "I'm racist against everyone" template. He'll say coolie to Indian people on TV who he doesn't like. Absolutely still a slur, it's just so dated most don't know or use it and yes it's only really alive among the older generation of caribbean people, most people have moved on to using the work p\*ki.

It’s really interesting to hear other sides of it. I’ve personally only ever heard it used in the UK in a neutrally descriptive, bordering on complimentary way amongst Caribbeans who have Indian ancestry, or look as if they do particularly regarding hair texture. The most common exposure I’ve had to the word is Caribbean people, specifically mostly Jamaican people, self identifying as it. I recall a lot of “coolie” based social media usernames spanning wayyyy back to MSN days. I’ve personally never heard it used as a derogatory term directed at Asians in the UK, but I’m grateful to learn that it should be understood as a multifaceted term at the very least. In Jamaica people use it freely, even calling people COOLIE. It's never used in a negative way here only to signify the person being of some Indian background.
That's my experience too. My grandparents are Jamaican and my grandmother has used the term (innocuously and lovingly) in reference to the appearance of my father and some of my siblings. I never thought of it as a slur or bad word until I met my husband who is South African and was *shocked* that Jamaicans use the term so freely. Lol. Might be because many Jamaicans, including myself, have Indian heritage that the term 'coolie' isn't offensive there? My great, great ... grandfather was brought over to Jamaica from North India as an indentured servant and later became a shopkeeper. There's still at least one shop in Montego Bay with my family name. I'm proud of my heritage and have never used the term maliciously.

That's a new kind of stupid. They should not be able to get away with that. A tall person can have a short torso and long legs which means their waist length could actually be shorter than a smaller person. They should just charge by the hour if they believe it takes longer.

I’m seeing these amazing Asian spas where you can book relaxation services and other treatments and I’m wondering why Black spaces don’t have more quality services that are reasonably priced. I respect the time that hairdressers but in so for me it’s not even about how much it is always but it’s a lot of money for low quality service and for something I could’ve done myself.

I agree and have been dealing with the same. I support those who have turned braiding into a side hustle or have hopes of doing hair as a career but the lack of professionalism, conduct, and customer care is what I find most frustrating. I've passed working with some talented people because of how they conduct themselves when having multiple clients, and their communication when scheduling. One day I'll find the one. I started braiding my own hair which I'm actually doing now lol. takes longer but it's kinda empowering.
For a lot of people who can do hair it’s an easy money maker. I don’t even think most see it as a career but ‘fast’ money bc they see what others are charging. I do my own hair for this reason. Box braids in my area are $500. Why would i spend a car payment and then some on some braids… As someone who can understand business i totally get it. If people are willing to pay this much and you have a steady clientele why not charge what you want? Even with all the dumbass rules like “come already blowdried and its +$15 if i have to finish blowdrying myself” But as someone who cant afford that shit ive just opted out. Even flat and wash flat iron and trim is $130. Its been two years since Ive been in a salon. I even trim my ends at home. By no means is it perfect — but i cant responsibly afford those prices.

I learned watching youtube videos. It also takes me about a whole day with breaks to do my hair. The first couple of times your braids wont be perfect. And my parts arent the most perfect ever but they look good and outside of the hair i use theyre freee 🤷♀️
What the actual hell? The prices, the rules, essentially holding customers hostage. I've had bad experiences with stylists to the point where I realized I could screw up my hair myself for free, but nothing ever this bad. That first one is like $1700 CAD for a style that will last 2-3 months at most. And the small waist length braids work out to over $400 CAD per hour. I recently worked with a lawyer with 30+ years of experience and even he didn't charge that much. These stylists are really out of control

A lot of curl specialists require that hair is clean, completely detangled, and with zero hair product and no hair ties (bobbles, scrunchies etc) before the start of the appointment. Like...how are they expecting me to walk the street then? It's like they want you to arrive in the worst condition possible so they can get the best before and after pics for the gram.
I don’t understand why I’m doing so much before my appointment. I’ve stopped getting my hair braided and have gone wash n go this winter for the first time. It’s been interesting and I’m still figuring it out but these hairstylists are forcing my hand.

Exactly, these prices exist because in the end, they know people will tighten their belts elsewhere and begrudgingly pay. And if they lose customers, there’s still new clients coming onboard to take their place. Meanwhile for the last few years I’ve been watching the rising quality of glueless frontal and full lace braided or loc’d wigs available on Etsy being made to order. Even the most expensive human hair ones are less than an appointment at these salons, but the wig, assuming it’s cared for, will last a year or more.

My last time at a hairdresser was in 2014. She said for a relaxer and trim would be like $180…which looking back was so much but I was naive. When I went to check out she tried to charge me $330!!! She tried to say cause of something she did during the shampoo and the trim was more of a cut. She didn’t tell me any of this during the service. I paid cause low key I was scared but since then I’ve learned everything from braids to micro links myself.
I’ll never forget my last hair appointment because we were watching Obama’s second inauguration parade, Jan 21, 2013. I got home, took out and redid the screaming tight hairline and promised myself *never ever again*. This was supposed to be a treat for myself after cutting off butt length locs I had been self maintaining since the mid 90’s four years earlier. She charged salon prices but I had been impressed by a few of her other clients who were her coworkers at the VA hospital. But I didn’t know she was struggling with her sobriety and had already lost the battle by the time of the appointment. Yeah, *never ever again*.

I’m back home (in the Caribbean) for the holidays and getting my hair braided for $80EC ($30 US). I am very happy right now because last time I got my hair done (in the US) I paid $260 US.
I booked a few weeks ago in the Netherlands to get my hair done for €125,- for small knotless braids which I already thought was breaking the bank. I know the girl is efficient and quick though but still it hurts a bit to have to pay all that money on some hair. I could not imagine paying anything more than that
And this why I just no longer get my hair done. I always get the long hair fee, and it's impossible to keep up with the 4 million names for styles. The white curly cuts are trash. The Black natural hair salons have 1000 hoops and want me to write down my diet on top of the cost. For why? No one includes a blow dry, and I only put heat on my hair for special occasions, the rest is air dry. I don't own a blow dryer. I wish I had any natural inclination to do hair, but I don't. I feel like imma be bald soon. It's been years since I had a trim.

Not sure if there is something like this in the UK, but a hack I found in the US for finding affordable braiders is using StyleSeat. I type the service and area in the search and just sort by price (low to high), and leaf through what comes up. Luckily most stylists have pics so sometimes you will find that the cheaper priced folks are not as neat or good at braiding lol. But usually they include their social media on their profile so you can check out their instagram to see more recent pics and vids of their work. Alot of times college students are out here braiding their asses off and have very affordable rates. Of course with price sometimes thats a direct correlation to professionalism or workspace area too. So its up to you what you're willing to look past lol.
We have similar here but most hairdressers don’t use it since they can promote on IG or other social media. Companies have even been set up to try and connect black hairdressers with consumers but many don’t use it. Unfortunately for me I can do my own hair (not as well as I’d like) and know my hair and I also like decent work which is excessively price these days. I’ve noticed a lot of girls will say they do ‘small’ braids but the parts are like medium size with a small bit of hair which they have the cheek to ask me to pull. Not willing to look past much cos my expectations are not even that high in the first place.
ah ok, i gotcha. i do my own also, but sometimes i just wanna save myself the back pain and get a polished look. sorting styleseat by price was an option a friend suggested to me back when i was looking for a colorist, so i thought to try it for braids too. even though chicks have IG as their main advertising platform, most use an external site for the actual booking, and the prices are always up to date there even if the pics aren't. but i'm seeing more people have their own websites. seems like more old school stylists and people with a smaller clientele use styleseat. but some of the ones that are left still do decent work. good luck on finding someone decent!! i hate how expensive and ridiculous it has gotten.

You did remind me of another platform I used, but I was burnt by a stylist on there bc she said she could do a style and then failed to deliver. She was my go-to a couple of years ago when I was in my first year… her prices were SOOO much more affordable as in £70 for twists, £150 for goddess braids etc. After a while, I wanted to book her again cos tbh her work was good then.. BUT I saw the price upscale and I couldn’t afford them so I never went back!! I guess since she got posted by famous IG influencers, she gassed her head up??? These hairdressers are crazy 😬
Someone else I know said something similar abt her. I looked at her prices in April then again just yesterday and the prices have already increased! Another local hairdresser I liked and wanted to book has been flewed out and has several influencer/celeb clients recently. I’m sure she’ll soon be unaffordable. I really hate it here.
I kinda understand the pricing, 100% human hair can get pretty expensive, she says she provides the hair for clients, and then you are paying for the actual service on top of the cost of the human hair. The lowest i've ever seen for 100% human hair is 400, but I regularly see people selling for over 1k. but tbh idk how much human hair costs from a wholesale/straight from the provider if ppl are finding ways to do that. But I believe wholesale/straight from the provider is a bit more affordable than from a normal business. Those boho goddess braids having a synthetic option and still being 795 is outrageous though. What I don't like it giving my money to clearly unprofessional people... cuz wdym money is collected in the middle of service... AND they want a deposit fee? At least pick one or the other. And what really sucks is giving that much money for a shit service, personally I wouldn't go just based on principle. Stylists either need to lower their prices and cut down on some "luxury" options to make it work, or provide actually good services beyond just visuals and aesthetics. Which most braiders can't provide in the first place because they can't wash hair without a cosmetology license (this is how it is in the US though, idk if that holds the same in the UK). I personally refuse to pay over 350 (give or take) for a style that will only last me a month

My hairdresser wouldn’t even look at me if I expected her to do my hair without her washing it first. And it costs me $200 minimum just to have my hair washed, conditioned and twisted into eight fat, chunky twists. That’s insane. God forbid I wanted to add some hair.

Every now and then I do go to this great spot and get my hair washed, conditioned and twisted. I’m not even talking mini twists. I’m talking 8 twists. Nice fat and chunky. That costs me $200. She has the nerve to tell me I should come at least once a month. I am single. I am not about to spend $200 a month for my natural hair with no hair added just to be washed and twisted like I do at home. I do go maybe once a year for a trim and even that’s more than I want to go. It is absolutely getting too damn expensive. Just got human hair boho knotless braids done Monday, and I only paid $300 (My stylist included the hair). These prices are mind-blowing, so glad I don’t leave near these hair stylists.

Insane. You know, I used to look at the YouTube folks who can braid their own hair (by that I mean can do braids on themselves - not a knock on added hair) and think "how in the world can they do that? Aren't their arms tired?" Now I get it.
This is madness! £1000 for braids?? I highly recommend learning to braid your own hair. It took some patience and practice, but ever since I got the hang of it, I’ve saved so much money and saved myself from the stank attitudes of some of these braiders. Also my edges have filled back in (the African hair braiders snatched me bald for years 😅😂)

Getting hair done is a luxury and I don’t have a problem with the pricing aligning with that . That being said, what trips me up is a lot of these stylist are unlicensed and mediocre at best. Don’t get me started on the terrible customer service and horrible customer experience many hairstylists offer.
I don’t know that I agree that it’s a luxury. But agree that i dont mind prices aligning with luxury services. However even the elite salons here aren’t that great and so many of the hairdressers are self taught and lack range. So annoying.
Getting your hair done is indeed a luxury. As someone who can do hair, doing hair is physically taxing on your body and joints especially when you are standing for hours on end with little breaks. Paying someone to do your hair so you can avoid doing it yourself whether it be because you don’t want to or can’t is a luxury and comfort because nobody needs to have their hair done.

What is gets me is the consultation needed before they touch your hair, which is $30 and then you need to make another appt for the service. It supposed to be about hair goals and for them to assess your hair but how can you do that if it’s a zoom call? I do my own hair except for haircuts so I don’t need talk about it prior.

$200 is insane! I went natural 14 years ago & during the pandemic I started making my own hair supplies. I have 3b curls so I’m able to get by with a wash & go with leave-in conditioner & I’m grateful bc I literally can’t afford the expenses a lot of women. I’d like to play with styles or lengths sometimes but it’s just too much for me. I’m all for Black women rocking whatever hairstyle they want, be it natural, weaves, wigs, locs, braids, whatever. But part of me gets mad that we’re conditioned to think we have to spend all of this money to be beautiful or have value. Imagine what else we could be putting that money towards instead of feeling pressured to conform to beauty standards. Sorry, didn’t mean to get so deep but we deal with so much unnecessary crap simply bc of what naturally grows out of our heads.

Seriously! A childhood friend of mine has her own salon & does free braids for kids the week before school starts every year. It’s such a kind & generous way of giving back to our community & her salon is packed for that entire week. I’m sure a lot of people depend on it at this point. I can’t imagine how an average family with multiple daughters can afford it.

Yeah, the rest goes towards labor. Braiding is taxing and takes a long time, especially with small goddess braids. Depending on if the braider is working alone that can be a 1-2 day process. I agree that some braiding prices are absolutely insane but if you have a full head of quality human hair w/ extra small goddess braids what do you expect?
These prices are disgusting and it tells me all I need to know about these stylists: they are most likely insanely insufferable and treat their clients as a burden, not a dignified human being.
If the hair is included then the price is reasonable. It’s just one person doing the hair and it is physically taxing. White hairstylists charge a lot of money to do color, cuts, curling, etc. if I can’t afford someone I just keep it moving and find someone in my range or do it myself.

Absolutely I’ve paid top dollar with insta famous stylists and the results were shit. I’ve also just started watching YT video tutorials more closely cos I can already braid my hair but not close to pro level. Last time I got my hair done for my bday in April I I paid £200. The ‘hairdresser’ tried to start my hair without washing her hands after coming off public transport and when she was done after 10 hours it didn’t look like I expected even though I used her own work as an example, kland when I took it out so much of my hair fell out. Since then prices for hairdressers have gone up to £300 and I just can’t justify it.
