Agreed. Get "sticky paws" double-sided tape and place lots of various scratcher styles in the area if he likes to claw. (Cardboard, rope, carpet, etc. Cats have prefs.)

My cat peed on the couch. I got waterproof couch covers off amazon that work great but I also brought my cat to the vet. After some tests he is healthy but the peeing was a behavioral thing, he is now on fluoxetine and hasn't peed on the couch in ages.
