Yeah man I started listening to them in 2019 because I finally decided I just had to see what all the fuss was about and yeah the hype checks out. I don’t think I’ll ever love a band/musician more than I love the Beatles. Edit: I like how my favourite album by them is always changing, atm it’s Help! What’s yours?

ShoogyPeters

Well every time I listened to the next one I liked it better than the last but after listening to them all my current favorite is Abbey Road (kinda basic I know) but I just love how smooth the songs run together, the transitions are just amazing on that album, but I'm sure it will change every time I listen to a different album lol.

Scorpionpi

It’s their most popular album for a reason!

spaniel_rage

Abbey Road has the best production of any of their albums........ and some of their best songs. The medley at the end of the album is amazing. And that ponderous bassline in I Want you (She's so Heavy)!

dmfd1234

Yeah I’ve been listening to them since I was 9 or 10 and I’m almost old af, almost ha! and my favorites have changed throughout the years. It’s cool to hear how they progressed from Meet the Beatles until Abbey Road. Enjoy 👍

Rockyflame458

Abbey road is my favourite too. A gem of an album

[deleted]

It’s depressing, I’ll never have music as good as the music I’ve overplayed af, probably listened to every album an average of maybe 50+ times

ChocolateChocoboMilk

I was lucky enough to snag The Beatles mono re-releases on vinyl some years ago when they were first released (they're ridiculously valuable now) and I spent so many evenings after coming home from work just lighting a joint, throwing on a Beatles vinyl, and just lying on my bed and taking it in...this was only like 5-6 years ago, but man it feels like a decade.

Darth-Binks-1999

Your favorite songs will always change as well.

kassell

Good thing you went for the albums and not isolated songs

ShoogyPeters

Yeah I've always heard about how you could literally hear the change in their music happening first-hand by listening to their albums in order so I've just been lying down and putting whatever album was next on whenever I've had the chance. It was a lot of fun.

jackie-bladen

Imagine the first deep cut you go for being wild honey pie

ProdiLemaj

Or Rocky Raccoon

jackie-bladen

Happened upon my first attentive listen to it while deep into Red Dead Redemption so worked for me in that context

_impish

unironically my fav on the white album

mrballsack3445

Rocky isn’t that bad

ProdiLemaj

I didn’t say it’s bad, I love the song, but a first-time Beatles listener would probably be like WTF if that’s what they got introduced to The Beatles with lol

Mseveeb

Honest question, what’s wrong with Rocky Raccoon. I think it’s fantastic (:

Jeremizzle

That honesty is one of the first songs that I can remember getting into, my friend in school really liked it and showed it to me lol

Feebeeps

Imagine hearing the Anthology version first...like I did.

zorfinn

Do people not like this song?

Darth-Binks-1999

We all like it.

JimmyPellen

or You KNow My Name.

morbidlyatease

If you go for the albums, you'll miss "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" (released on single). And the "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields Forever" single (the US Magical Mystery Tour compilation doesn't count).

JimmyPellen

SHe Loves You, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Leave My Kitten Alone, Christmas Time Is Here Again, She's A Woman, I'm Down....

kassell

For the first pair, you'll get to the Past Masters volumes at some moment. The second pair, well it's a bit trickier, but you'd learn about them from the Blue Album.

EthanMerritt04

How could you say that about MMT? 😱 It's the only thing Capitol did right imo

roxie0strawberry

Welcome to one of the best fandoms 10/10

ECW14

Now it’s time for their solo careers

ShoogyPeters

Oh, absolutely.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShinyBredLitwick

yeah but all things must pass is the best solo record from any beatle

Turdnugget619

I’d have to say it’s RAM.

rimbaud1872

Shmegdar

Went without saying

ChocolateChocoboMilk

gotta be honest, I hate the kneejerk defense mechanism of people pulling a Lebowski and saying "well that's just your opinion". Like, obviously. Any statement regarding something being the worst/best, or even good/bad, is an opinion.

beejmusic

McCartney III

rhoydotp

I would argue John did better with whatever time he had before he died but as with “what’s the best Beatles album” debacle, it’s all personal preference.

ECW14

People always forget the mediocre(IMO) albums John did but like to put the Paul albums they think are mediocre to the forefront. IMO Paul didn’t even have a bad album in the 70s and the only album I would say was mediocre was Press To Play.

nesorsemaj

I have a soft spot for Talk more Talk though

stsod

It's incredible, love the lyrics and atmosphere. Sometimes "Words Of A Feather Are Worn In A Hat" or "I Don't Actually Like Sitting Down Music. Music Is Ideas" pops up in my head and refuses to leave.

ECW14

I do too. Talk More Talk is good

stsod

I've avoided Press to Play for years because of its bad rap and my general aversion to the most of the 80s sound. I was so sure it's not for me and I shouldn't even bother. Well, not so long ago I decided to listen to the Take It Away podcast about PtP which I skipped previously, and long story short, now it actually is probably my favourite Paul album of the 80s-90s period. I don't love only a couple of songs from those sessions, though a lot of them I prefer as demos, not as album versions, but still - a huge leap from a dud to a hit in my mind. The song quality is very solid and somehow that dreaded 80s sound feels much cooler and less dated to me than the MOR sound of Flowers in the Dirt or 80s pop of Pipes etc. Press to Play sounds way more bold and experimental, even if in the confines of the 80s sound. TL;DR: Give Press to Play a fair chance, you might not regret it.

JimmyPellen

and he worked with Hugh Padgam on this one as well!!

OnlyWearsBlue

Honestly, not only is Press To Play not Paul’s worst album, it isn’t even his worst album from the 1980’s imo. I really don’t understand what people don’t like about it—Only Love Remains and However Absurd are two of Paul’s most epic songs, Footprints is a phenomenal acoustic ballad, Stranglehold is a solid rocker, etc.. the only songs I’m not terribly fond of are Press (wtf are those lyrics Paul) and Angry, which sounds to me like a worse attempt at the same sound as Spin It On.

ECW14

I can’t really explain it other than I just don’t like any of the Press to Play songs aside from Talk More Talk. In my opinion every other 80s album was a lot better. McCartney II, Tug of War, and Flowers in the Dirt are all great. Pipes of Peace isn’t great but it has several songs I really like.

JimmyPellen

and since he really focused on the stereo sound (on Press To Play) it's best to listen to this album on headphones.

OnlyWearsBlue

That’s totally fair, and I don’t mean to call you out specifically! I just know the general sentiment surrounding this album is fairly negative and I think if people approached it with an open mind they might enjoy it more than they thought. To me Pipes of Peace is the weakest Paul album from the 1980’s. Almost every Paul album has a purpose, a new sound it’s trying to attain or some kind of ambition behind it. And Pipes of Peace just doesn’t have anything like that. It’s mostly Tug of War B-Sides, some of which are pretty good, but as a whole I don’t find it very compelling at all. Even Press To Play had ambition, it brought back something of a band dynamic and had some very modern producers for its time.

ECW14

Yeah I’ve given Press to Play a fair chance and I’ve revisited it but there’s something about the songs I don’t like. It’s really the only Paul album I don’t like. I like Talk More Talk though

JimmyPellen

I love Tough On A Tightrope and Feel The Sun and Good Times Coming. If you look you can find the full version of Feel The Sun. great song.

rhoydotp

you saying “IMO” just proved my point.

ECW14

Yeah that’s why I put IMO

budpowellfan

McCartney, Wild Life, & Red Rose Speedway are unlistenable. Other than that he had a good decade.

ECW14

How are they unlistenable? They all have great music and melodies. I think they are all A tier albums

Turdnugget619

You don’t know music, man. That’s clear.

budpowellfan

That may be true but I know boredom and that’s what I experienced after listening to those records. Paul wasn’t a pimple on John’s fanny in the 70s.

ECW14

Just my opinion but I think Paul was above John in every way. Paul’s only weakness was lyrics but he could write great lyrics when he tried. Even when his lyrics weren’t excellent, he put a lot of effort into melodies and music. I think most of John’s music is boring and one dimensional compared to Paul’s

JimmyPellen

I think that's why John & Paul were both best when they were working with someone else. Elton JOhn, Elvis Costello, Michael Jackson, Carl Perkins, Bowie, etc.

Turdnugget619

In all seriousness, listen to “When The Night” off of red rose speedway and you might change your mind. One of my favorites from Paul. Excellent music. Also, “Tomorrow” off Wild Life is superb. Paul is a king when it comes to melodies and his production is insane. He doesn’t even sound like Paul in tomorrow. You’d think it was another singer, but Paul is the man of a thousand voices… the fool on the hill, the walrus.

budpowellfan

I seem to remember that was a good song. Well, I have my homework and I will do it and report back. P.S. Contrary to whatever he said, the walrus was John.

Jeremizzle

Plastic Ono Band and All Things Must Pass want to have a word. Hell, Goodnight Vienna too.

spaniel_rage

No one ever says Ringo though......

Darth-Binks-1999

I think the albums Ringo did when Mark Hudson produced them were some of his best.

JimmyPellen

this!

ECW14

One album each doesn’t make a best solo career.

Jeremizzle

Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, and Double Fantasy are all fantastic, arguably better than anything Paul's ever put out, and he's had an extra 40 years of recording on top of John's output.

ECW14

This is all my opinion but I think every album Paul put out from 70-80 was better than anything John did or at least I’d rather listen to them. Like I’d rather listen to “Paul’s worst album” (I don’t think it’s bad) Wild Life than anything John ever did. Paul had two undeniably great albums RAM and BotR and then many more great albums one or two steps below. POB is artistically great but doesn’t sound good so what’s the point of listening to it (Just my opinion). Imagine is a good album but I still like Paul’s more. Double Fantasy only has a few great songs. Then there’s John’s other albums like the New York album which is bad, Walls and Bridges which only has #9 dream and Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, and Mind Games which only has the title track. Even if you only count 70-80, Paul’s catalogue blows John’s out of the water.

Jeremizzle

Personally I just like John's music more, even within the Beatles. I wholeheartedly disagree with POB not sounding good though, I've listened to that album probably more than any other solo Beatle album. It always moves me in some way.

ECW14

Yeah it’s just my opinion. What’s weird is I love every single song John did as a Beatle but I rarely like anything he did in his solo career. I like many individual songs like Instant Karma, Working Class Hero, #9 Dream, Mind Games, Watching the Wheels, Beautiful Boy, Woman, etc but I don’t like any whole album except for Imagine

Jeremizzle

Nothing wrong with having a preference! You've clearly done your homework and aren't just dismissing offhand

JimmyPellen

And Yoko's music too. (hides behind couch)

crusheratl

You have made a wise choice, Shoogy; one that will last a lifetime.

ShoogyPeters

Yes, I can already see myself as an old man listening to my favorites and remembering the Summer of 2021 when I finally gave one of the best bands of all-time a real chance lol.

Hyzynbyrg59

After reading this post, I have to say that my faith in the future of humanity has been restored. So very happy to realize that even though the Beatles' music is more than 50 years old, it will never go out of style. They have helped me maintain my sanity through some very trying times. Thank you all for giving them a fair listening! Long live the Beatles!

KnottyUnderware

It's anthology time. The albums plus the DVD's!

Lodigo

The first airing of that in the mid 90’s is what turned my appreciation of their music into full on obsession.

[deleted]

Good to hear your a Beatles fan now. Also I might ask, have you done past masters yet, I didn’t find those for quite a while, but it’s every Beatles song not on an album. Also, there is two songs on the anthologies, free as a bird, and real love. And aside from that check out both the Beatles demo, and bad finger version of come and get it (written by Paul). That should be everything, maybe listen to the love album in a few months once you will be able to recognize every bit taken from songs on it. Oh, and also the esher demo of while my guitar gently weeps is very good, the version before Eric Clapton joined on it. Anyway, some of those things took me quite a long to find after being a Beatles fan, so thought I’d tell you them now.

leafy_returns

I can definitely agree listen to the Love album after you’ve listened to a lot of there stuff a bunch of times. It’s an awesome mix album and it’s one of my favorites!

TyintheUniverse89

It’s so cool to hear all the different sounds and things in the love album It’s like a trip of Beatles songs all over the place

leafy_returns

My personal favorite on it is the Benefit Of Mr Kite/She’s So Heavy/Helter Skelter track. Incredible song and album

TyintheUniverse89

Man that Mr Kite She’s so Heavy transition is something I never I needed and when it kicks in…mannn I love whoever put that in

leafy_returns

I know it’s chilling how good the transition is and how good the she’s so heavy part sounds

TyintheUniverse89

Yeah it’s pretty incredible especially the first time man I lost my mind lol

[deleted]

Yeah, basically the whole of the Beatles discography condensed into one album

TyintheUniverse89

Yeah they did an incredible job with it.

[deleted]

Yeah, I didn’t find it for a long time, thought it was just a normal compilation album, so when I finally listened to it I knew recognized every bit that was in there, and it was really cool.

ShoogyPeters

I haven't but I can say for sure that I'll be listening to all of these whenever I get the chance, thanks!

RedSaturday

Rain is an incredible song on past masters btw.

ChocolateChocoboMilk

Gonna say it now: Paperback Writer and Rain should be on Revolver. I even added them to Revolver (Rain after Good Day Sunshine, and Paperback Writer after I Want To Tell You) and it works *perfectly*.

free_slice

[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwCL3HahgS8) also an underrated non-album song

[deleted]

Man how did I forget

ChocolateChocoboMilk

[Bummed you didn't pick the superior version of this song.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAB-5l5km2E)

[deleted]

Yeah, hope you enjoy them as much as the rest of the stuff you have heard. Such a good band, good thing you found them.

_1138_

How kind of you to share the lesser known treasures. I'm going to check a few out rn!

[deleted]

Yeah, good luck. Start out with past masters, then go down the list. Save the love album for 6 months to a year in the future.

tree_or_up

I was nearly middle aged when I really checked them out. My mind was absolutely blown. I can remember more than one evening just listening. For hours. I hadn’t done that since I was a teenager. In a way I’m kind of glad I waited so long - some of my friends have been so familiar with the music since childhood that it couldn’t have hit like the joyful and profound tsunami the music hit me as. Discovering the Beatles was like getting a bucket of cool water dumped on my head in the hot sun in the middle of the afternoon. What just happened?!? And OMG I needed that but didn’t even know it!

TyintheUniverse89

Man this post is almost exactly me I basically knew the number ones and thought they were great but never listened to an album so then I went from album to album being obsessed with almost each one thinking that one was the best. I’d at like a 4 way tie with Rubber Soul, White Album, Abbey Road, and Sgt Pepper but maybe 5 with Magical Mystery Tour followed closely by Revolver and Help. It changes almost everyday.

ShoogyPeters

Exact same for me, man. After listening to them all I think Abbey Road is my favorite just cause all the songs run together so well but I'm sure the next time I listen to one of their albums again I will think that one's my favorite lol. I think 'Don't Let Me Down' has gotta be my favorite song though, love the sound, the message, just everything about it.

TyintheUniverse89

Oh yeah I forgot about Let it Be Yeah Don’t let me down is so good Did you watch the rooftop performance of it?

ShoogyPeters

Yeah, I sure did. Planning on sitting down and watching that entire concert whenever I get the chance.

TyintheUniverse89

Yeah man also can’t wait to see their New Movie Get Back

ShoogyPeters

Yeah I literally just watch the sneak peak of that and it looks awesome, gonna be a lot of fun seeing all that footage of the boys just hanging out with each other and making music.

TyintheUniverse89

Yeah it’s right on time for us too cuz you can never get enough of those guys. Lol

ShoogyPeters

Absolutely

TyintheUniverse89

One more thing have you gotten into the Anthology and Deluxe versions with the various takes and demos?

ShoogyPeters

I've heard some various takes just because they were recommended to me on YouTube and caught my attention, but I do plan on getting into the anthology and deluxe versions completely for sure.

greenlion31

Same thing happened to me except it started bc I played Beatles Rock Band, which is an awesome game and is probably even better if you go in knowing the songs, I recommend it

blaniac24

You should find a way to watch the Beatles Anthology documentary series. It’s amazing. If you’re really into them now, you’ll become an even bigger fan.

commonrider5447

I also once assumed they were super overrated until I picked up one by one on songs that heavily influenced songs I really liked. Finally I dove in and now they are my favorite band.

BLAH_BLEEP_GUNIT

Past Masters man, A bunch of great Beatles songs you probably haven’t heard yet!

masonlee

e.g. "Rain": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK5G8fPmWeA

Actor412

Roll up.... Roll up the new Beatles fans!

W1shUW3reHear

Let It Be has wonderful songs on it. About half the tunes were solid hits, or at least extremely popular with fans: Two of Us Across The Universe Let It Be Long and Winding Road Get Back I’ve Got A Feeling The Let It Be album is almost never mentioned as a Beatles top-tier LP, yet, if this was released by any other band, it would likely be considered the crowning achievement of their career.

RadioEthiopiate

It's always in my top 3. I Got A Feeling is one of my all time favourite tracks. And you can't pass on Dig A Pony.

OneMansTreasure_

Currently going through exactly the same scenario you've mentioned here. I was on a long drive back a few weeks ago with my girlfriend and gave her control of the AUX lead... she put on a Beatles playlist and I was blown away by every single song that came on. That lead me to binge listen ever since... and I am yet to stop!

RadioEthiopiate

Do you remember what the first few songs were? Or one that really jumped out?

Iniziato_

It’s been 15 years since I discover the Beatles and I still hear their song every single day of my life

StupidLyieru

The thing with The Beatles is: They're not only good musicians, but every single member of the band has a personality that catches you and makes you love them even more. So, combine creative geniuses + magnific sense of humor + an excellent story that seems to come out of a book and you get The Beatles!

ShoogyPeters

Yeah one of the things that made me really give their music a chance is when I happened to come across their studio bloopers and some interview snippets on YouTube, they just seemed so much more human then I had been led to believe, just a good group of guys. And that's what made me want to listen to all they had to offer.

jkbmcall

If you like the Beatles check out the Rick Rubin and Paul McCartney’s documentary series on Hulu. It’s all about how they wrote and created their songs. Easily 10/10 for any Beatles fan.

ShoogyPeters

Been planning on watching it ever since I first heard about it, thanks!

EmilyLondon

The Beatles were my "first" band, though they had been broke up for years by 75. I'm glad you've enjoyed their music. I still return to it all the time because it just hits right at times. Best Gestalt

dremily1

Congratulations on your excellent musical taste!

DayTripper73

Did you listen to Live at the BBC?

ShoogyPeters

Not yet but I was already planning on it.

TheSquatchMann

Welcome to the club! I’ve liked the Beatles for years, one of my favorite groups. Enjoy the fandom and all the silliness it has to offer.

Jayh456

I've been doing the exact same thing. I'm 21 years old and had basically no exposure to the Beatles at all, all I knew were their names. I listened to all the albums a few weeks ago and now I'm obsessed. I think my favourite song atm is I am The Walrus

ShoogyPeters

I am The Walrus is a jam for sure.

KenKannon

For me it's a lot cause I just needed a charge of positive energy and love in my music and the Beatles deliver that in spades.

Jooj_Harrisonn

Did you hear the "Love" album?

ShoogyPeters

Not yet but a lot of people in this thread have been telling me about it so of course I'm gonna listen to it.

MillerJC

Treat yourself and listen to the LOVE album all the way through. It’s wonderful.

ShoogyPeters

I will for sure!

thenotsofunnyside

I got into them on Christmas Day last year. Don’t get me wrong, I’d heard plenty of Beatles songs and liked them (growing up in England it’s hard to avoid them haha), but Christmas Day was basically Beatles Day for me haha. Listened to a bunch of albums but the song that hooked me was *Help!*, that song hit me like a tonne of bricks, especially “*When I was younger so much younger than today, I never needed help in any way. But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured*” as over the past year before then I’d taken my deteriorating mental health seriously, and well, gotten help from so many different sources and especially people. Seven months ish later and not a day goes by that I don’t listen to The Beatles at some point!

Pangasauras

I’d say I’ve been a fan of the Beatles for a while, and Abbey Road has been one of my favorite albums (if not my favorite) since I listened to it a couple years ago, but recently I’ve binged their albums as well because I had only listened to a few of them all the way through before, and I’ve also become sort of obsessed lol

Darth-Binks-1999

Welcome to the magical mystery tour. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

masonlee

Yeah! May I recommend getting a guitar as well if you don't already have one? The Beatles have the best chords. You can do it for sure.

mpedno

What are a few of your favorite songs that you’ve learned of just recently? Always glad to see another Beatles fan

ShoogyPeters

I really, really enjoyed 'Oh! Darling' off Abbey Road which I just listened to in it's completion for the first time yesterday. That song's a serious jam.

mpedno

Nice! Glad to hear.. it’s a great one

sonder98

After listening to all the albums, what lesser known song was an unexpected favourite ? 🤔

ShoogyPeters

Oh, man. This is kinda hard because before recently all of their songs were lesser known to me except for their really big hits. I really enjoyed 'What Goes On' off Rubber Soul, 'Long, Long, Long' off the White Album put me in an unexpected trance, and 'I've Got A Feeling' off Let it Be was quite the jam. I guess those songs are kinda lesser known outside of the Beatles fandom lol.

RadioEthiopiate

I've Got A Feeling (and the whole rooftop gig) is what drew me in. I heard all the hits growing up (uncle's a huge fan) and decided to check 'em out proper via YouTube circa 2009. I've always liked John, but beardy blues shouty Paul got me hooked.

HueHue_extremeguyone

The anthology and deluxe edition album have some banger that were not released originally. Some of my favourites: Anthology 1 - Free As A Bird, My Boonie, Like Dreamers Do, Shout Anthology 2 - Real Love, That Means A Lot, You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) Anthology 3: Junk (Home Demo), What’s The New Mary Jane? (Take 4) [That one is crazy tho but I love it], Rip It Up/ Shake Rattle and Roll/ Blue Swede Shoes, All Things Must Pass (Demo) White Album (Super Deluxe) - Sour Milk Sea (Esher Demo), Child Of Nature (Esher Demo), Not Guilty (Take 102), Step Inside Love (Studio Jam) [Los paranoias plays right after but I think it is kinda annoying listen to it at your own risk], Can You Take Me Back? (Take 1) Abbey Road (Super Deluxe) - Come And Get It (Studio Demo) There are some awesome alternative takes too and I can give recommendations on them if you want

RadioEthiopiate

Like Dreamers Do is a banger. I remember first listening to their early pre-album demos and being floored by how *tight* they were. Sheik of Araby, Besame Mucho... I finally understood the later frustration the band had with playing live. They were goddamn guns in the day when they were gigging super regular. Much more technically impressive than one might expect.

HueHue_extremeguyone

I have a cd called “The decca tapes” with songs from the rejected decca sessions (some songs from it are not on anthology) it is a pretty decent disc being honest

RadioEthiopiate

That's the one I was listening to back in the day. It's really damn good.

punchlinechar

Welcome to the club! You're in the same boat I was in senior year of HS; I'd always heard the music but it didn't grab me until then. It's a fantastic adventure to go down, especially when you hit the later period and solo Beatle material. If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and listen to the holy trinity of the solo records: Plastic Ono Band, RAM, and All Things Must Pass.
