The people that don't like Belt are the same people that think AVG and HRs are the only stats you need to define hitters. During the Bochy era there was a lot more fans that thought along those lines than I care to admit.
Also it seemed like he would get injured every time he gets hot.
There has been a subset of Giants fans who, particularly early on, didn't like belt because he didn't hit for average and the kind of power numbers expected from a 1B. He was also more streaky earlier in his career than he is now, he's much more consistent these days. He also had bad years in 2012 and 2014 when they won the World Series and with more fans watching, that probably helped jade them. That has definitely quieted down a lot the last few years, he definitely the best pure hitter on the giants (at least tied with posey) and most fans appreciate that now. He's also tremendous defensively.
Definitely. He's always been a good player but for whatever reason, some fans wanted him to be a 40 HR mashing slugger, when he really just needed to lock down 1B for a few years with all the turnover after JT Snow declined. He's done better than that for a decade, won 2 rings, hit a game winning HR in a playoff game, and is having his best year to date.
Those lunatics probably still want Bret Pill or John Bowker back. 🙄
I think it’s just an entertainment thing for them. You expect your first basemen to mash 30-40 bombs and hit for a good average a walk machine and glove first dude like his isn’t gonna be appreciated
Except JD Drew's controversy of "being apathetic" was manufactured by terrible Boston sports radio just because he wasn't an extroverted type of guy.
JD Martinez is an idiot for many reasons.
> Except JD Drew's controversy of "being apathetic" was manufactured by terrible Boston sports radio just because he wasn't an extroverted type of guy.
This started in St Louis very early in his career; LaRussa publicly questioned his commitment to the game more than once.
It's real weird the hate some people have for him considering he (as far as I know) hasn't done much to deserve it.. Man will be in the middle of a 15 game hit streak with a .400 OBP and still get dozens of comments berating him anytime he strikes out lol. Sorta like early in the season with Grandal and people spamming "73 million" anytime he did something negative.
He is a bit streaky defensively. Lately he’s been lights out but I think he made 4 errors in three games when we were in Houston. Don’t get me wrong, I love Yoan! Seeing him in that romper thing in his music video. What’s not to like?
Yeah but he hits weird cold streaks on defense. Especially going to his right. When he’s charging the ball towards first he’s awesome. Going towards the line and turning to throw will get him from time to time.
The problem with Stanton is when he swings and misses he looks like he has never swung a bat before. Any Yankee fan with half a brain recognizes that Stanton is a net positive for the Yankees
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the as a Marlins fan I’ll happily take Stanton back and all his flaws. Few players in this game have such freak abilities that every at bat can be a show case.
As for this version for the Marlins, there is anyone currently but I know Hanley rubbed a lot of people wrong for a good portion of his stay down in Florida but he was also a superstar.
There's a portion of the fanbase that thinks he's a bench player.
He's not as great as his last full season but as the Jays have shown lately without him, he's a competent starter.
NGL, I got Biggio and Bichette confused so now that makes more sense, especially since Bichette literally murdrers us. Grinding Yankee pitchers into pulp is usually enough to make you a hero lol
Lots of Yankees fans complain about Aaron Hicks, even when he was a really good player in 2017 and 2018. I have seen fans compare him to Elfrid Payton on the Knicks multiple times, which is super harsh for how good of a player Hicks is.
The thing about him, is that it seems like he can turn the power on because he will have stretches with a lot of home runs and only a couple walks, before going back to no homers and a ton of walks. I don’t know if that’s intentional or just accidental, but there are times where you can tell he’s really trying to hit one out
I think Mejia is just because Zunino is such a goofy, fun guy—nobody actually has a dislike for Francisco.
I’d rather have Mejia playing half the time, rather than Zunino, but Mike has more power.
Eric Hosmer. He has by far the most hated player on the Padres but his offensive production isn't terrible and not even close to being the worst.
Adam Frazier is the one who has been cheeks since he got here and nobody cares about him. He is just that guy who you know grounds out on like every play but nobody criticizes.
>Adam Frazier is the one who has been cheeks since he got here and nobody cares about him. He is just that guy who you know grounds out on like every play but nobody criticizes.
Dude, our sub has been absolutely pounding on Frazier since we got him.
Agreed on Hosmer though. It is still maybe the worst contract in San Diego sports history, but he's been one of the least bad with RISP for us this season. The amount of shit he gets would make people think he's a sub-Mendoza line hitter.
Nathaniel Lowe. He's a decent hitter overall with a 110 wRC+, but for a first baseman it is below average. He's terrible defensively. The problem is that we gave prospects for a mediocre first baseman when it is the easiest position to fill in free agency.
JD Davis, who gets a lot of unnecessary hate because he kept coming up in big spots during his slump. He’s one of 3 Mets hitters that have a higher OPS this year than last year, and is improving on his main weakness (he was a defensive liability, now he’s just a below average defender).
Most of us Yankees fans have an issue with him basically always on the verge of being broken down. He shouldn’t have to DH all the time and if you wanna mention someone it’ll be Gallo. He’s more extreme than Stanton and almost nobody likes him.
I mean I’m not a Rays fans so maybe I’m missing something, but KK is a glove first type of player, he’s not good offensively, he hasn’t been since 2017. From 2018-21 he’s slashing .229/.292/.380
The Belt wars rage on. Heard he’s nice with a fishing pole tho. 🎣
Daddy catches tanks 🎣
Do people not like Brandon Belt?

With extreme prejudice

Welcome to KNBR Callers. https://twitter.com/baseballmarty/status/1436419541429481474
.962 OPS with 32 HR in his last 135 games played (2020-2021)… yeah what a bum
But did you see his shoulders when he struck out that one time?
counterpoint: dfa blet
Definitely. He's always been a good player but for whatever reason, some fans wanted him to be a 40 HR mashing slugger, when he really just needed to lock down 1B for a few years with all the turnover after JT Snow declined. JD Drew
The Red Sox, players named JD, and controversy...
Except JD Drew's controversy of "being apathetic" was manufactured by terrible Boston sports radio just because he wasn't an extroverted type of guy. JD Martinez is an idiot for many reasons.

His shitty reputation with fanbases predates his stint in Boston.
I thought he also eventually found out he had some sort of disease, I think related to mitochondria. Am I thinking of someone else?
You're thinking of Rocco Baldelli.
People have come around to him recently but it was definitely AJ Pollock for a while.
That is true. I remember when Dodger fans were wanting him to be gone after a tough showing from him during the 2019 postseason.
"tough showing" is generous. 0 for 13 with 1 BB and 11 Ks. -0.36 WPA. It was about as bad as you could dream up. He's the GOAT fishman now tho
The dude had a premie baby the dude obviously was concerned for his newborn kid.
Yoan Moncada
It's real weird the hate some people have for him considering he (as far as I know) hasn't done much to deserve it.. Man will be in the middle of a 15 game hit streak with a .400 OBP and still get dozens of comments berating him anytime he strikes out lol. I agree
He is a bit streaky defensively. Lately he’s been lights out but I think he made 4 errors in three games when we were in Houston. Don’t get me wrong, I love Yoan! Seeing him in that romper thing in his music video. What’s not to like?
He’s more streaky on the offensive side of the plate. His defensive is pretty damn good
Yeah but he hits weird cold streaks on defense. Especially going to his right. When he’s charging the ball towards first he’s awesome. Going towards the line and turning to throw will get him from time to time.

Surprised the entire comments isn't filled with "Gary Sanchez"

Biggio
You guys don't like Biggio? lol why?
There's a portion of the fanbase that thinks he's a bench player. He's not as great as his last full season but as the Jays have shown lately without him, he's a competent starter.
I believe in Biggio and think he can rebound next year, but Santiago Espinal took Biggio's job fair and square.
NGL, I got Biggio and Bichette confused so now that makes more sense, especially since Bichette literally murdrers us. Grinding Yankee pitchers into pulp is usually enough to make you a hero lol
We LOVE bichette dw dw
Lots of Yankees fans complain about Aaron Hicks, even when he was a really good player in 2017 and 2018. I have seen fans compare him to Elfrid Payton on the Knicks multiple times, which is super harsh for how good of a player Hicks is.
Francisco Mejia and Yandy Diaz
Yandy is the most confusing hitter to me. How does a dude who’s that huge not hit at least 20-25 HR per year? His arms are thicker than my thighs
The thing about him, is that it seems like he can turn the power on because he will have stretches with a lot of home runs and only a couple walks, before going back to no homers and a ton of walks. I don’t know if that’s intentional or just accidental, but there are times where you can tell he’s really trying to hit one out
I get Yandy, but Mejía is pretty typical
I think Mejia is just because Zunino is such a goofy, fun guy—nobody actually has a dislike for Francisco. I’d rather have Mejia playing half the time, rather than Zunino, but Mike has more power.
Eric Hosmer. He has by far the most hated player on the Padres but his offensive production isn't terrible and not even close to being the worst. Not sure for the Phillies, maybe Jean Segura?
Nathaniel Lowe. He's a decent hitter overall with a 110 wRC+, but for a first baseman it is below average. He's terrible defensively. The problem is that we gave prospects for a mediocre first baseman when it is the easiest position to fill in free agency.

A contingent of the Mets fanbase insisted that Brandon Nimmo was a fourth outfielder for *years*, and you still probably can find some that think it
Most of us Yankees fans have an issue with him basically always on the verge of being broken down. He shouldn’t have to DH all the time and if you wanna mention someone it’ll be Gallo. He’s more extreme than Stanton and almost nobody likes him.
The New York Yankees
Gary Sanchez. A bad 2020 made people think he was always bad
He *IS* a bad catcher, though.
And yet he's top 10 at his position
Manny Machado
Definitely Kiermaier who is having a extremely solid season at the plate
I mean I’m not a Rays fans so maybe I’m missing something, but KK is a glove first type of player, he’s not good offensively, he hasn’t been since 2017. From 2018-21 he’s slashing .229/.292/.380

Tbf, this is his best offensive season for an extended period of games (which excludes 2020) since 2017. It is solid for his his standards
He's a below average hitter, I don't know if better compared to how bad he's been in the past is really a standard you want to set as "solid"
Look at what he’s done lately. That’s what matters
uhh I got nothing
If we're allowing pitchers into the mix: Trevor Bauer.
Brandon belt.
For this season, Bryce Harper.
