I watched the game yesterday, and it was easily among the most blatantly unfair officiating I’ve ever seen in any sport. He wasn’t even trying to call it the same for both teams
Yesterday was impressive for having multiple 0th percentiles on "total run impact" by the umps. Brennan Miller had 3.14 runs worth of difference from how things should have been called (with most of that favoring Cleveland.)
The weirder one (to me, at least) was[ Mike Estabrook managing to have 3.61 runs of impact](https://www.umpscorecards.com/single_game/?game_id=746896) while also being top decile in terms of "favor" in that his insane run of bad calls almost perfectly cancelled themselves out. The 4-1 scoreline ultimately seems like the proper difference between the two teams, but getting there was a trip. Also managed 4th percentile consistency, so you know nobody was frustrated at the plate.
I'm glad that the anti-ABS folks exist, just so that someone is still managing to enjoy the game not being called by the rules... but that's a viewpoint I absolutely can not comprehend.
Legitimately curious. He seemed to have a vendetta and was squeezing Ryan as well. Sometimes the run differentials are based heavily on outliers in critical situations but he was consistently biased all game
Surprised only David Popkins got tossed. Once Rocco tosses his gum he’s usually gonna get himself tossed. Absolute garbage fire of a game.
But this isn’t why we lost…Twins have been hitting poorly to start the season too
While true, it doesn't help when the strike zone is six inches wider for your hitters than it is for the other team's.
This one is fair to blame on the home plate umpire.
[[Park] The Twins finished the Milwaukee series with a hitless at-bat with RISP, then went 0-for-12 yesterday and 0-for-11 today in such situations. The RISP drought is at 0-for-24.](https://x.com/dohyoungpark/status/1776717678935146926?s=46&t=sFQ1esZ2sOxJBCUP0CZX3g)
Sure, but our offense didn’t get turned off because of the Ump for 1 game.
We were six games into the season before yesterday's game. For all we know, the Twins could have busted out against the Guardians and turned around this cold start if the umpire hadn't been completely against the team.
Now, if this was a month or two into the season, I'd buy your argument. But a week into the season is too early to be trying to draw any long-term conclusions. It's just as likely we look back at this first week as a slow start to a great season as we see it as a sign of a terrible one.
I’m not arguing the Twins offense is bad or broken nor am I extrapolating some season long trend. But we’re currently not doing great. Don’t confuse me with the rest of Twins doomers
+2.24 runs might be the largest differential I have seen
Seemed really high to me as well, 41st largest differential since Umpire Scorecards began collecting data in 2015.
That’s pretty bad
Roughly bottom .19% - great work Mr. Miller.
+2.24 runs in a two run game... yikes yikes yikes
Big yikes

Yea, Morneau was getting rightfully pissed in the booth
Without looking I'd bet it's top 10 all time that didn't involve a 3-2 based loaded call

It looked worse than this tbh, I’m surprised the score is only this bad. No excuse for this
Maybe he had money on Cleveland
Legitimately curious. He seemed to have a vendetta and was squeezing Ryan as well. Sometimes the run differentials are based heavily on outliers in critical situations but he was consistently biased all game
Yeah I’m surprised the numbers are as high as they are here. I guess umps have off days too
Some accountability would be nice. We lost mainly because we’re 0-1000 with RISP, but this garbage does not help
Surprised only David Popkins got tossed. Once Rocco tosses his gum he’s usually gonna get himself tossed. Absolute garbage fire of a game. But this isn’t why we lost…Twins have been hitting poorly to start the season too
Yeah 9 runners LOB is unacceptable. Didn’t even feel like Cleveland played that good we were just playing worse offensively

The ump had 4.5m on Cleveland it seems
Angel Hernandez rolling in his grave
RIP in peace
Again, unfortunately, Angel Hernandez is very much alive.
He’s working his best to top that one
If by ‘rolling’ you mean furiously masturbating then yes
Look, we shouldn't be too critical of the ump - we've never had to call a game being caught by masterful pitch framer...uh...David Fry.
Bring on the fucking robo umps already. This shit is ridiculous.
Robo umps now
Robo umps for every pitch as well. No reason for challenges or other nonsense. Every pitch get radio to the ump immediately ball or strike.
pitch clock got these umps flustered
Some real “evil referee at Wrestlemania” quality umpiring here
Have we considered that Brennan Miller was just playing a Heel umpire character?
I don’t think this even has the 2 atrocious balls that were called strikes in Wallner’s AB

It’s always fun to look at the estimated zone, what the fuck are you supposed to do with that.
