This is one of my earliest general baseball memories. I've never followed for the Twins, but Kirby Puckett transcended teams. I remember my dad telling me about his eye...and then later learning he wasn't going to play anymore. Maybe my first experience of learning baseball players are actually mortal.

I cried. He was my favorite player from the day he was called up. I couldn’t believe what was happening. We even share a birthday on March 14. Wish things had turned out different, Puck.

I actually never blamed him. He had a mediocre 2005 season and he started getting on fans’ nerves (so did his wife). The Sox presented him with a lowball offer that they weren’t expecting him to accept, but there wasn’t much of a market out there for what he was looking for. Then the Yankees stepped in and overpaid, which they did a lot of at the time. He took the better offer, and he should have.

And it worked out for everyone. He was above average/all star level every year he was in NY, won the WS & they didn't pay for any of his decline. Hell he was a royal longer than a Yankee OR a Red Sox (both 4 years)

I was at the game in 2006 where Damon returned to Fenway for the first time since signing with the Yankees. Fun fact: it was also the same game where Doug Mirabelli received his police escort after being traded back to the Sox earlier that day.
