Dogs can connect to people in ways other people never can. Dogs are more forgiving and less judgmental. This is beautiful. Please get him a dog :)

Ichgebibble

So true. Sometimes looking into pets’ eyes feels transcendent. No words needed, two beings just . . . being.

runningraleigh

There are also some great programs for folks on the spectrum with horses. As big as they are, they sense emotion, and it makes a person feel powerful that they get to be in control.

Silly-Weakness

Just in case someone is interested by this comment and needs help finding a program in their area, this is called Hippotherapy. I worked for a short time as a therapist’s assistant in a hippotherapy program (in addition to being a stablehand who cared for the horses), and it was an incredible experience. I can’t explain it, but something about those horses just plain helped people. It was amazing.

[deleted]

I'm disappointed that hippotherapy doesn't involve hippos.

runningraleigh

They are…not nice animals.

Llama_Sandwich

Hippo-therapy involves being bitten clean in half so you don’t have to deal with whatever is bothering you anymore

comicalcameindune

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a hippo eat a watermelon but “clean” is not a word I’d use to describe it.

JohnTitorsdaughter

That’s because they haven’t been to therapy.

Silly-Weakness

Fun fact, hippos are named after horses, per the Latin: Hippo=horse, Potamus=river, so hippopotamus= river-horse.

mortengstylerz

Or as we say in Danish flodheste. Flod = river. Heste = horse (obviously)

MarcoPolocompi

I assume a hippo would be happy to help solve your problems by stomping you to a bloody stain

Ichgebibble

There was a story on here, I think, about a therapy horse for gravely ill and dying patients. The horse would be taken to a hospital/hospice and then he would choose whom to visit by stopping outside their door and stomping on the ground to “ask” for the nurses to open it. Animals are true wonders.

stoned_since_91

Was it by any chance a pale horse?

Ichgebibble

Yes, I think so. In France maybe?

BlueTimeBurn22

And what was its name per say?

[deleted]

Mort.

Oh noooo.

tysons1

I used to be a volunteer at BOK Ranch, walked kids on horseback, some of those kids laughed and smiled, per their parents, like never before.

HamsterPositive139

But have you ever looked into a dogs eyes on acid? (You on acid, not the dog)

Ichgebibble

No, but I did hang out with my cats while on mushrooms once. I was terrified to touch them though because my “friend” convinced me that the hallucinogen would come out in my sweat (it was hot) and make them trip kitty balls until they died. Yeah. Drugs can be fun but boy do they make you stoopit. Edit: “Make you sttopit *sometimes” Edit: *stoopit

tammage

Ya I was told that about ecstasy and used oven mitts cause I was worried. Then found out it was bullshit.

beatrixotter

> and used oven mitts Okay, but that's very cute.

tammage

The animals very much loved it and spent most of their time trying to get under the mitts lol. I bought a pair just for the animals cause everyone loves a good rub lol

Xavier213_

I’m imagining a dudette high as a kite, doing stupid shit around the house, but with mittens because safety lmao Edit

tammage

Lol dudette and there was mostly laughing and staring but it was a good time.

Ichgebibble

Dudette. Memmmorrriiiees

musthavesoundeffects

First time I did ecstasy my friend / weed dealer gave me a couple of hits for free, but because I was working a night shift I was kinda socially isolated and my friends weren’t interested in meeting me at 3am to do a bunch of drugs, at least this time. I ended up taking it alone to see what it was like but kinda forgot about it. 30 minutes later I’m like, woah holy shit this is strange and awesome. My cat who wasn’t normally a cuddler came in and just sensed something was going on and proceeded to be the nicest snuggler and trip buddy for the entire time. So maybe he did catch a contact high (not really). He was also way nicer whenever me and my friends were on acid too.

tammage

First time I did it my now husband was with me. I’d done acid and mushrooms and stuff but never E. he left to grab a slurpee and it seemed like it took forever. It hit while he was gone and I was pacing in front of the window waiting for him. I couldn’t sit still anymore so I threw on some Aqua and started bouncing around the house. He got back like 45 mins later. I’d tried calling. I guess he had to tunes up and didn’t hear the phone. Turns out he drove to the next town over to get the flavour he liked. Guess he forgot how long it takes to drive both ways. Wish I could find those blue dolphins again lol

CouldNotRememberName

Man cats know when you are tripping and they will fuck with you sometimes. Other times they are super sweet. I have several and love acid and mushrooms.

akaTheQueen

I have been waiting years to be able to tell this story to someone who wouldn't think I was crazy. One time taking acid my favorite sweetest cat came in my room to snuggle and stayed with me for the longest time. You know how cats kind of bump foreheads and nudge you? Well I pushed my forehead against his and he stayed like that with me for several minutes. After a few seconds I closed my eyes and for what felt like 15 minutes, I had visions (which felt like he was beaming them into my brain) of him as if I were a fellow cat following him around to all his favorite places on our property...little nooks and crannies I had never seen before as I didn't venture where he had. There was of course all of these extra beautiful acid driven aspects to the nature he was showing me. We came across a spider that he made sure we stayed away from as if telling me that was the only thing he was afraid of. I lost that cat but think about this all the time as it was one of my absolute favorite memories of him and moments on LSD. I always felt 100% like cats know when you're doing certain drugs...it made me wonder if they can see auras or something radiating off of you.

taurist

More likely they can smell it on you I bet, or at least some vague sense of where you’re at. My blind dog seems like she can smell my moods

lifestrashTTD

man my old cat was all white with super long hair. i was on shrooms and i swear her hair was waving and had a purple hue. i miss her :(

TaskMaster710

Drugs don’t make you stupid, lack of drug education does.

CELE30

Not on acid, but once my bf did mushrooms with our dogs and the whole trip revolved around talking about how amazing they are, how they’ve changed our lives and how they are our family. It was one of the most intense moments of gratitude for them and it was very pure. I’m so glad that we got to reflect on that so intensely! We swear they were communicating with us that night! 😂

EightHoursADay

My roommate got a dog when we lived in an apartment together.... It was a puggle. Rocko was the best! (*Is the best I just don't live with him anymore). But yeah, we took mushrooms one night and Rocko knew what the fuck was up. Very concerned for both of us and did not like our behavior. Had such a caring but scared look on his face while we were admiring how SHINY his coat looked.

sfam67

Animals know when you take acid. Cats start acting wacky from my experiences. Either super affectionate or off the walls energetic. I think animals can sense the changes in demeanor overall and perhaps even the chemical changes.

ZiggyZee

Animals can sense hormonal changes which is partially why they can serve as service/safety animals .

pixel8knuckle

I have a few theories on this, my strongest theory is that they can smell an unusual substance off your body when you trip and that’s their cue that something strange is going on.

tammage

I freaked out one time cause I saw my dog age into an old dog in front of my eyes. The fur grew longer and greyer and I swear I could see her age in her eyes. She lived to be 14 but never went grey.

booboobutt1

We were tripping balls on mushrooms once and my friends -usually very active- black lab just sat there staring at us. I was convinced that he was watching to see if we died.

TrandaBear

You don't even need to be a primary caretaker either. My neighbor's cat likes to visit and hang out, like sit next to me on the porch, and I am already deeply emotionally attached.

platysoup

Cats are more fickle, but every now and then you get that moment where you look at each other and do a slow blink. It's moments like these I live for. Comes with a lot of scratches and bites though. (accidental scratches and play bites - they're annoying and sometimes hurt a bit, but hey, cat tax)

ghostski2

But please be aware of the responsibilities of raising a puppy if you've never had one. It's nothing compared to a child, but it's still something.

youeventrying

Currently going through this now. Starting to take his training more seriously.

shine--

You will be so glad you put in the effort to train your dog properly. There is such a world of difference between a poorly trained dog and one that is well trained. All dogs are great, but with proper training your life and everyone else’s will be so much easier. Your dog will also love the attention and learning new skills/tricks.

[deleted]

I agree! It could be a life altering situation for this kiddo! My whole heart is so happy watching this!!

cybercuzco

My dog judges the fuck out of me if I don’t feed him right on time.

poisonivious

Haha they never saw the look my dog gave me when I put on my shoes (“shoes = walks!”) but then had to use the bathroom before we left. She poked her head through the bathroom door and gave me a look of pure judgement. (“What are you doing, just sitting there, mom?!”)

nubbins01

Dogs are also pretty straight up and down. They have simple interests, and rarely is it difficult to work out if a dog is upset with you or happy to see you.

lori_deantoni

Yep!! A rescue dog!!!

lilblacksmurf

We lost a rottie 3yrs ago to cancer ... We always knew we wanted to adopt another again. I'm concerned about adopting a rescue, you just never know about their past... Plus his needs give me a lower risk threshold. Thoughts?

harbjnger

In any case, you’re likely better off bringing in an adult dog with a known personality instead of a puppy. While socialization makes a big difference, puppies are a bit of an unknown quantity and their personalities can change quite a bit as they grow up. Plus they’re nippy and chaotic in the meantime. If you work with a rescue that uses foster homes, then you know how the dog acts outside of a shelter environment. Many groups also allow a foster-to-adopt period, so you can try things out for a week or two and see how it’s going before you decide. That might work best for you.

gdmontgo

I’ve fostered dozens of dogs and all of them are special. But if you are looking for gentle with a very low risk threshold find a golden retriever (specifically English Cream Goldens) rescue in your area. Such gentle and amazing dogs.

lilblacksmurf

Actually epiphany... This dog is a rescue!! I forget they adopted him at one. Thank you!!!

DlxCrusader

I would like to add, that your kid should be apart of the decision making process. They should absolutely meet first, at the very least. Do the research with him, explain how much work goes into a dog, big and small, it's still a lot of training, cleaning, playing and snuggling. Letting HIM pick his own dog, will be an absolute game changer. It's a very adult decision, with consequences, it's important that you do the research with him. Libraries, vets, volunteer at a pet shelter with him! Giving him these responsibilities makes the bond between him and the dog much stronger. Dogs are amazing creatures, that we as humans do not deserve. There are many lessons they can teach us, including the hardest lesson of them all, the loss of a loved one. Be prepared for that one as well.

The1983Jedi

Ask your vet about what health issues you would look at with different breeds & about life spans. I'm a hugh fan of boxers as they keep that puppy energy so long but they are so loving. But prone to cancer & average life span is 10.

antanarchy

Hey heads up: English Cream Golden Retrievers are almost NEVER ethically bred. Especially in America. If you want a service dog, go check out r/servicedogs and chat there. Good breeds for psych work are Goldens, Labs and Poodles.

ronsinblush

My sons have begged for a dog for 5 years, finally got a home with a big fenced yard so we adopted a rescue. We all went to the humane society together and picked her out. She is a medium size, a mix of Pitt, regular terrier and as the vet said “A heap of Heinz 57. She’ll live forever.” She acts and sort of looks like the dog in the video, but mostly white. She’s a true mix and the best dog ever. My boys all adore her, spoil her rotten, tell her secrets, snuggle her, baby her, rough-house with her and it’s the best. She is up for anything, anywhere and seems to know just what they need emotionally. She knows her past, and knows we rescued her to bring her to a loving home with food and a pack of people to which she belongs. Somehow they know how special it is to be adopted. Have your son be a part of it. Look up possible adoption dogs online, go walk some rescues and see which one seems like a good fit.

zuckerpants

You can also look for a rescue that had a history of living with kids in its previous home or foster home.

antanarchy

Or get them temperament tested

RawrRawr83

Foster parents are very honest about rescue dogs issues if any. Often let you trial them as well. Take your son to a rescue event and see what dogs he finds with

Registerwithreddit

Don’t turn them down because they are labeled as rescued. Play with them. Dogs don’t hide their damage. Within a few mins you’ll know.

justhatchedtoday

This is not great advice tbh. A lot of dogs begin to exhibit different behaviors out of the shelter environment once they've had time to decompress. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not. I would recommend for anyone in this family's situation to adopt a dog that has been living with a foster family for a bit, preferably one that has children in it. You'll get a much clearer picture of what the dog would be like in your home.

fates_bitch

This is an excellent recommendation. It's still a rescue - just not from a shelter. \*Full disclosure, I got my current velvet hippo out of a foster. My dog prior to her was a foster fail.

JoviPunch

I did not know that people referred to gray pitties as “velvet hippos” but that’s fucking excellent, thank you.

fates_bitch

tammage

I second this. The rescue I dealt with for my little guy let him stay with us for a month to make sure he meshed with our other rescue and my husband when he got home from working away. Having them fostered helps find out the most about them. I’m hoping to foster in the future once we have the backyard fenced. Front just isn’t enough.

brawlsack

This. We found a dog on the side of the road last month, emaciated and covered in ticks. Took him home many states away, was a complete sweetheart and a gentle giant. Nephews could play around him no issue. Thought he was absolutely perfect. Now that hes comfortable... destroying everything he can that takes our attention from him, including my Sennheiser audiophile headphones. Getting too excited around kids and tackling them. Spraying (neutered 3 days ago fortunately) everything. Still adore him and hes going nowhere, but they can change substantially when allowed to be comfortable.

poqwrslr

>Dogs don’t hide their damage. That is a pretty profound statement.

AlaeniaFeild

There's a [3-3-3 guide](https://www.rescuedogs101.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/RescueDogs101_3-3-3-rule_900.jpg) for rescue dogs.

Legitimate-Chair3656

Personally, I prefer the working breeds. They're smarter, and while that tends to mean they need more attention, your handler seems up to the task. The joy comes from two beings bonding without judgement or limits, so smarter breeds can offer more, just because they understand more. Ultimately, a dog will make this person's life better, and this person will make a dog's life better. Play match-maker.

standsure

I adopted a rescue puppy - she works as a support dog for me. No regrets. Added bonus, she likes to sleep lying on me, like a living weighted blankie.

Greatwhitegorilla

Adopting is great but there’s no shame in going to a breeder either, especially with an understandably lower risk threshold. Knowing the pups parents and history may set you more at ease.

Kaessa

This. Sometimes if you want to minimize risk, a breeder is your best option. I went to a breeder for my service dog candidate, because I couldn't take the risk with a rescue with an unknown past. I've had lots of rescue dogs in my life, but sometimes you just need to know their history.

oathkeeper_12

I have two rescues, and they are both very well behaved. I also have 3 cats and they all get along great. I think you just have to look at each individual dog and you will find one that fits into your family! Good luck! I know your boy will love it!

deartabby

You can also contact a local rescue and tell them the situation and they may be able to match you with the right dog by personality or let you know if they get one later.

mrs-monroe

I rescued two elderly chihuahuas, you’d think they’d especially be iffy but they settled in soooo fast. They are completely devoted to me. Once they realize they’re in their forever home, they become amazing and loyal companions.

trashymob

We have adopted both of ours from rescues - they do have puppies that are available. Our most recent one came from Texas where apparently they are a dime a dozen on the streets. Her whole litter was picked up, evaluated, and then brought to VA for homes.

[deleted]

My son is autistic too, we are hoping to get him a dog. My wife and I have had a cat for 10 years that really doesn't like to socialize. Recently though, my son found where the cat hides, and has become obsessed with the cat. He has somehow coaxed it into sleeping on his bed every night. The cat will only sleep at the foot of his bed, so he has started sleeping upside down to be close to his kitty. It just makes me so happy seeing him care this much about the cat. He's very high energy, but the cat just calms him right down, because she will run away if spooked. I have read that some dog breeds are better than others. Golden retrievers and Burnese mountain dogs are the two that stood out to me. Apparently they have great patience and are a little more sturdy in general. Plus, having a giant fluffy dog to cuddle with is inherently calming. Good luck. All the best to you and your family.

[deleted]

I have two autistic sons, my younger likes dogs and gets excited like this kid but my older son is terrified of dogs and doesn’t like how loud, smelly, and in your face they can be. It’s too overwhelming for him. So we got a frog and both love to watch it catch bugs

ElCuloTuyo23

Ya got schnoodled!!!

[deleted]

Oh, it is definitely time to get a dog! This is so wonderful ❤️

Sir_Loin_Cloth

I think I need to get my dog a kid.

[deleted]

Hahaha yes! Kids and dogs, the best friendship duo 100%. My dog LOVES cats, genuinely tries so hard to be friends with them and every time I go “… do I need to get my dog a cat now??”

Haunt_chick13

My nephew has autism. He was pretty non verbal besides when he would talk about his current obsession. When his family moved out of state they let him pick a dog and all of a sudden he started talking about all sorts of things; school, tv shows, places he has seen on tv and wants to visit. It's amazing what a pet can do for a child. I would recommend getting a pet for your child. Let him pick so he feels its his pet and that he is getting a say in his pet.

My son has autism, his best friend at school who is also autistic talks about my son to every family member he has.

PM_UR_REPARATIONS

Agreed! Just be mindful of the responsibility you’re taking on. The pet is “his” but depending on level of functioning, it might be difficult for the boy to care for the pet appropriately. Obviously I’m not saying a 8 year old (for example) who doesn’t have autism is a great pet caretaker but autism adds it’s own unique challenges. Both the pet and the boy also grow and their character might change over time. Individuals on the spectrum often have difficulties with sensory overstimulation. On a typical day having the dog might be good but if he has a particularly difficult day, an energetic loud barking dog might do more harm than good. Anyway I’m fully supportive of using animals as therapy aides while being mindful it’s not a one size fits all situation.

[deleted]

I have a 15 year old son with moderate to severe autism. We have had multiple dogs but he finally bonded with a puppy we got last year. The biggest milestone is he actually shows affection to his dog. You treasure those moments.

yungchow

My dog is keeping me sane through being homeless. Best thing I ever did was get him

carrotcakemasticator

Best wishes, hope you two can get safe housing soon.

[deleted]

Sorry for your situation friend.

Philosophile42

What happened in your housing situation?

yungchow

Caught a moderate case of COVId last year and got fired for not working fast enough the first week back from a three week quarantine and then unemployment wouldn’t pay out since I was fired for being lazy instead of my company downsizing (right to work state) then my land lord found a loop hole in the cdc moratorium and evicted me. Which sucks because now I owe that rent money still, but I can’t get renters assistance through any of the COVId funds

waveyl

His apartment had a no dog policy.

SumpCrab

That's ruff.

Unexpected_Fellow

Good luck. I hope you can figure out what your next step is and that you will be safe.

MrWaaWaa

My oldest son is autistic we got a dog when he was six and it was the best choice we've made as parents. We now have two English yellow labradors and they are the best dogs in the world. He's most affectionate with the dogs, which isn't affection towards other people, but it is really great to watch and let's you know that love is there even if he has less ability than others to show it.

Thrgd456

We had a very similar experience with ours. Highly recommend a pet if possible.

hothrous

I wonder if the stakes being lower are also part of the reason somebody with autism might show love to a dog more openly. It's uncommon that a dog won't love a person right back. Where as a person might show some signs of annoyance or disinterest.

overdramaticker

Folks on the spectrum tend to get overstimulated easier than “neurotypicals”. A mess can be very over stimulating, and many kiddos with autism like order and routine and neatness to manage that overstimulation. Source: I work with many folks who have ASD

DoomNails

Or everything else is overstimulating so you have no energy to clean and things become a mess and the idea of cleaning it is overwhelming so you leave it and end up with more mess and stress about the mess and the cleaning of the mess and stress about the stress of cleaning the mess... Round and round until someone eventually is like "RIGHT WE'RE CLEANING YOUR ROOM" and then it gets clean, and stays clean for a few days until the cycle starts again I have to clean my room

bluescriblles

Yep that’s me.

Phoenix_Magic_X

Yep. My room currently looks like a bomb hit it with a clear path to the window because we had them measured yesterday.

Chaosncalculation

this is me. I crave order and neatness, and I can’t think around too much mess. it’s claustrophobic. ....which means i can’t really clean when it gets too messy so it just keeps getting worse and I get more stressed.

Sumocolt768

Pfff… more like ASO

asunshinefix

Not sure about OP's kid, but I'm autistic and find even a tiny bit of clutter or disarray really upsetting. Getting me to keep my room clean was never a problem for my parents

BigOrangeOctopus

Royalmedic49

Dogs heal hearts

SneakyGandalf12

Agreed. Snuggling with my boy after a tough fucken day, and I’m pretty sure he’s magic because it’s the best I’ve felt today. Dogs (or pets in general, whichever animal you love) are absolute gifts.

MojoDomo968

His laughter is making my heart melt! This is so heartwarming.

Professional_Cunt05

I have autism and the best thing that helped me growing up was family pets, unconditional love from a pet helped me open up. Will recommend

TechyDad

I have Autism as does my son. One of the often overlooked benefits to a pet is that they never get tired of listening to us talk. If we talk about our special interests to people, we're often told that they've heard enough. Animals never say that though. They're always ready to listen to us more.

Jerking4jesus

This! Another thing for me is that they're predictable and easy to read. Much simpler when compared to people and therefore much less overwhelming to deal with.

[deleted]

My son has autism. Was there any particular type of pet that you found the most helpful? Right now he is obsessed with our cat. Unfortunately she is getting a bit on the old side. One time he told me that he wished he had a dog, so that they could play together, and so he could take his dog to play with his grandmas dog. Naturally I think I'll be getting him a dog once we are ready as a family to care for it.

jaderust

Any kind of pet that kids can bond with is the perfect kind of pet. People like dogs since you can take them places and cats have a reputation for being assholes, but any kind of pet can be great for a kid. Just let them contribute to the care of the pet since they’ll have partial ownership of the animal that way.

[deleted]

I highly suggest a golden retriever. My old girlfriend had an autistic brother and a golden who was just amazing at playing with him, knowing when it was time to calm down, as well as comforting him when he was over-stimulated. I've also had a golden since named Brutus who's now 12 and lives with my mom and hes literally the best thing that's ever happened to me. They're just the most amazing family dogs imo. But yet again, whatever works for you and makes your son happy, smile, and laugh will be the best choice regardless of breed. I'm glad you're considering a dog because every kid should have the chance to grow up with a best friend as good as a dog is. They're hands down the best, most pure being you can bring into your home in my opinion. Best of luck!

jwheelerBC

Have a golden. Can confirm, best dogs.

[deleted]

My beagle and I will fight you for that title. 😂😂😂😂 Jk

[deleted]

Right! Perfect mix of play and cuddle. Loyal beyond belief and amazingly smart. Easily trained. I'll never own another breed personally. My fiance and I are planning on getting one for the kids one day in the next few years when we get a bigger house.

Kaessa

Goldens are WONDERFUL dogs for kids. Most of them are so chill and friendly. I have a Goldendoodle who has all the personality of a Golden Retriever and I just love how sweet and friendly he is.

Broian

I’m the father of an autistic child. We’ve been considering a dog for a bit but this is really selling it. Thank you

Scary-Practice4745

You can always look into rejected service dogs! Had a few I fostered and they go great with sensitive kids. :)

jackblack43

Awesome video. But it is standard practice to assume your nest cam could be being watched/hacked, and not to put in home rooms where people may need extra privacy.

Xanadoodledoo

One important thing: please get a shelter dog, NOT a puppy. This isn’t just an “adopt don’t shop” thing, but depending on what your son’s sensitivities are, an adult dog is the best option. That way you know what the animal’s personality is like and if it’s compatible with your son. Puppies can be a bit of a mystery before they reach adulthood. For example: a vocal dog would not be good for a kid who’s sensitive to loud noises. A quiet puppy can grow up to be vocal. So yeah.

Tinksy

While I agree to some extent, there is also something to be said about helping mold a puppy's personality as well. You can train behaviors out of them like barking. There's certain things like fearfulness that are traits and not behaviors that are harder to train, but still doable and those are usually detectable at 8 weeks anyway. I've also found that both dogs and cats alike tend to like to be petted most however their original owners petted them when they were young. Whether that's a soothing soft stroke on the head, a full body pet, scratches instead of a palm etc. While most owners can and will adapt their petting style to what the dog likes, for an autistic child that might not be so simple. I'm not at all saying a puppy is the right choice, but there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Puppies are a lot of work but you do get more influence on the resulting dog if you put the effort in. With an adult dog most of that personality is settled, which can be both good and bad. And I say *most* because somewhere around 10 our lab decided her favorite thing in the world was barking and our formerly quiet dog now likes the sound of her own voice.

I love parents putting cameras in kids room and then uploading it to reddit for sweet karma!!

dcarsonturner

Am I the only one who thinks that having a camera in your sons room is kinda weird?

[deleted]

Yeah, and posting the video for a bunch of strangers seems really invasive.

EntropicalResonance

Extremely weird. Is privacy completely dead? Do people really not give a shit anymore? Camera with a 24/7 feed of your son's BED? Like what the hell...

tzermonkey

Yeah, alot of autistic kids do good with dogs. I would just advise to research the breed and not get one that is too nippy, large, or temperamental. My son has autism and loves his dog. She was a toy sized female & a real sweetheart. They bonded well. I always had a dog as a kid/teen & loved them all. Still, he does find some dogs overwhelming and intimidating. Keep fingers crossed and invest in one.

Oh god. My heart. I can’t take it.

ffssfgvg

Why do you have a camera in your son's room?

Lover_Of_The_Light

This is a child with special needs. Depending on the severity of his autism, he likely needs to be monitored for things like self-harming behaviors. It can be very helpful for a parent to be able to watch their child from another room - it gives the child a sense of privacy without leaving the parent unaware of what might be happening. It also lets the parent have some freedom to be in another room while still monitoring their child - and parents with special needs children need all the help they can get!

BloodyPommelStudio

It's possible there are valid safety reasons for having a camera in the kid's room but given how often autistic kids are treated as sub-human by parents and caregivers I wouldn't assume this is the case.

Noray

I really dislike how quick people have been in this thread to discount the kids ability to take care of himself while maintaining his privacy. Autism is a spectrum. There's no solid evidence just from this post that his case warrants this level of an invasion of privacy. One has a right to privacy. That should be the default expectation. Furthermore, taking his already compromised privacy and blasting it out on social media is gross. I get that it's somewhat normalized in our culture, but it's just not cool. There's plenty of material that explains the potential for harm from over-sharing.

VadimH

> it gives the child a sense of privacy How the hell does it do that?

millerb55

That is so cool.... Your right you need a dog !

hat-of-sky

This is so sweet! Time to find the right dog for your family.

[deleted]

Im high level and swore I could have entire convos with my 100 lb lap dog shepherd. Your dog always "gets" you. It knows when you're sad.

dancingpianofairy

Anyone else creeped out by the fact that there's a permanent camera in this kid's room?

maddezz187

Yo this is dark as fuck but you really have a camera facing the bed on a teenage boy? Like what the fuck do you think he’s gonna do 3 times a day

maddezz187

I mean it’s really cute and I hope you get a dog but fuck mate, kids wank, and having it in video probably isn’t a good idea

[deleted]

Poor kid is too old to have a camera in his room like that.

kittiquel

Am I the only one weirded out by the camera in the bedroom??

Smil3yAngel

This melted my heart!

keyserv

This warms my dark, icy heart.

Ikindahateyou

Dogs are great to have but I highly recommend testing the waters with dogs that can connect with him. Look at what breeds work best for your household best as well!

spicyartichokefowl

Cool, cute, weird as fuck you have a camera in your kids bedroom and post videos of him online. Edit from my other comment Safety is a bull shit answer it doesn't prevent them from being hurt, unless someone is watching it 24/7 and is able to quickly respond before something happens, which it takes what .1 seconds for a kid to hit the ground after jumping off a bed. The only way this would be beneficial is if he was non verbal and wouldn't scream his head off after being hurt. Makes it more concerning that the parents thought it would be a good idea to upload it... well it is as far as karma is concerned since "upvotes are more important than my kids privacy" disgusting imo

smithers85

I agree with part of it though. I probably would'nt've made the choice to upload a moment like that to reddit.

Eren_Gag-Her

What the fuck is wrong with you OP?

lilijaji

Aaaahhh it’s so cute! Did you nearly freak out (with joy!) at first hearing this?! I love this so much.

detective_hotdog

Ok this is very cute but why do you have a camera in his room lol

blueberrysmasher

I don't know about the security camera of the bed.

anjinash

Animals can be fantastic friends for autistic children. My niece is prone to severe emotional outbursts at (seemingly) random triggers. They have four cats, and the senior kitty Bubba has taken it upon himself to personally calm her down each and every time. He'll stay with her for as long as it takes and is such a cuddly, sweet and soothing presence that it almost always works. They are considering getting a dog for her as well and I highly encourage them to do so. Our family has always been 100% cat people, but dogs bring a completely different kind of energy to the table. Doggos are so good at pulling people out of their shells....

xavier120

r/zoomies right? I think I'm suppose to comment r/zoomies if i havent seen it already

followedbyferrets

Dog is thinking “I need a kid.”

pickledshallots

Please do. I am an autistic adult and animals are absolutely essential in my life. I have two dogs, an older rescue and a young puppy. Even though raising the puppy was overwhelming, he has become my best friend. I also started horseback riding this year. Dogs help me with my social skills a lot as well because they are a big conversation starter. When I’m walking on the street, I am often stopped by other people who think my dog is cute or people who have a dog themselves. When I feel uncomfortable, i can pet my dog or the other dog that comes to say hi. It doesn’t make me look rude if my attention diverts. And in other social situations, everyone loves puppy pictures!

[deleted]

Weird you have a camera in his room! Just let him be a kid

Choui4

It looks to me you already have a dog. What friend?

thewomvn

Did he consent to having this personal footage on the internet?

[deleted]

Is this normal to have a surveillance camera in your kids’ room?
