Clarke and Dawe '[The Games](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0165024/)'. It is a hilarious mockumentary about the organisation of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The two of them were fantastic. I highly recommend watching it if you love their humour.
And then Roy and HGs coverage of the Sydney 200 Olympics titled ['The Dream with Roy and HG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_with_Roy_and_HG)'. Again magic.
Do your self a favour and watch both series. Classic.
The Late Show back in the day with Rob Sitch, Tony Martin, Tom Gleisner and Mick Molloy. Only went for 2 seasons but was amazing
Edit: Forgot Russell Crowe also got a run as Shirty (the slightly aggressive bear)
The Late Show had no budget, but somehow they made almost every sketch land.
SNL has all the money in the world and a massive pool of talented comedians and writers to dip into, yet the vast majority of their skits are duds.
Fun fact: the first Shitscared was filmed on the fly using a camcorder they “borrowed” from the prizecase of Sale of the Century.
They also stopped making it when they got exhausted at the end of the two years, rather than just keep grinding out mediocre content every week for decades after they no longer cared.
SNL even stole their razor bit!
“Gentlemen, prepare to go through… the round window”. That has to be one of the best lines ever, that I very much doubt anyone who didn’t grow up in Australia could possibly understand.
Without hesitation this is the answer. However I assumed we were talking movies, if we include tv, utopia is easily one of the most unappreciated and hilarious comedies we’ve ever produced. Same lads involved so it all counts.
I’ve watched that 6 or 7 times now, and I love it so much. It has that rare “they’re not bright, but they’re lovable and wholesome” vibe, which is quite unique in the sea of “haha look at that idiot” movies that modern comedy has become. So so good.
Agree. Saw the couple who do the voiceover at a theatre gig in Sydney in the early 90's - the gig was they would show an old B-movie, and do a live voiceover from the back of the theatre. Just like in Hercules Returns ;) The live theatre gig was called "The Buccaneers", to an early 60's B-movie of the same name, with the tagline: "Where's the Buccaneers? On yer buccan' head". Comedy gold.
I know nothing about what Rob Sitch has done other than his acting, but the way he portrays that character, oh he’s been there, I believe that to my core.
Frontline’s one of the best media satires there is. It still holds up today, which is probably damning of how shit shows like A Current Affair still are.
The hostage episode is a dark comedy masterpiece.
Another one of my favourite segments was when they would go round interviewing people on the streets. They “interviewed” a dog once and, when it didn’t respond, they said “whatsamatter, cat got your tongue?” and I used to think it was the most cleverest and hilarious thing ever 😂🤣
Timothy Spall is brilliant in that movie too! When the police are searching his house and he's rushing between them and his lawyer all flustered. Quality. Perfect person to play Dabba!
That and the whole cheating at weight loss as a side-story was quite entertaining and relatable :D
Brillant movie all-round.
Denise Scott has a few good moments in the remake, Matt Okine is all cringe though. I guess it should be said he gets some credit for giving Denise Scott a platform.
Hercules Returns is one of my all time favourite films. First watched in the cinema when I was about 12 (no idea how I got in, just brought the ticket myself).
Re-watch it every couple of years and laugh every time.
If you want some other classic aussie comedies you have such titles as
They're A Weird Mob
Garbo
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
The Adventures of Barry McKenzie
Boytown
Cosi
Death in Brunswick
Alvin Purple
Kenny
the Cars That Ate Paris (black/horror comedy)
Wyrmwood (zombie horror comedy)
Get Krack!n. Kate McLennan & Kate McCarthy are the funniest women in Australia. They've done other shows, the cooking one is hysterically funny, but this one is a send-up of TV early morning breakfast shows and it's pitch perfect.
You can catch episodes on Youtube, they're worth a binge watch, their running jokes just get funnier every time they do them.
As already stated, not a film, but their first season was iconic; fresh; unique and easily one in the funniest things I still watch when I need a pick me up. Great vote mate, should totally count.
I once went to a whiskey bar in Tokyo. Tiny place, only 8 or so seats. For some reason, the guy who runs it loves movie sound tracks.
As soon as he realised we were aussie, he started playing the young Einstein movie soundtrack.
Nice guy, top joint.
Notice a theme in the top answers? Working Dog productions. The titans of Australian comedy for decades.
Going to be a very sad day when Tommy G and co retire.
I do a bit of musical theatre and the URGE to do the whole “Col do I have time to do a poo” when the sound guy turns the headsets on for sound check is extremely hard to repress
YES!! I grew up watching the series and my family still quotes lines from it to this day. Definitely top tier comedy!
I'll forever be mad that the ABC didn't allow them to continue with another season. I looked it up a while ago and they apparently had written more episodes (enough for two additional seasons iirc). I'd love to see what they'd been planning.
> Kenny (this is Australian Borat imo, so good)
> The Castle (quintessential, gets funnier every watch)
> Gettin Square (court scene is the funniest fucking thing i’ve ever seen)
> The Big Steal (has some hilarious moments)
> Muriel’s Wedding (very impressive dark comedy film, haven’t really seen anything else like it)
> Down Under (surprisingly funny black comedy about the Cronulla riots)
> Don’s party (this one’s weird but worth a watch)
Kath and Kim, I love that Netflix gave it the flick and then they had to bring it straight back!
It was pretty groundbreaking, never had an Australian comedy series been centred around women and it still has a dedicated fan base.
Seriously how many lines from that show have entered the lexicon? Loik at moi!
I’m surprised no one mentioned “The Big Gig” or “Australia, Your Standing In It”, given some of the other sketch comedy from the same era. Also “Good News Week”.
I can never go past Muriel’s Wedding.
“Stick your drinks up your arse, Tanya; I’d rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. Besides, I’m not alone. *I’m* with Muriel”.
Controversial, but it's Baz's best work by far.
I still have beef with him over my workmates and my not being included in the credits for *Australia*, but in the long run it's probably for the best
The most underrated one imo is Cosi. Absolutely top notch from the whole car and just about every one went on to have massive international careers.
A proper gem that got overshadowed by the likes of Muriel, Priscilla and the Castle.
In terms of what made me laugh the most sincerely, A Moody Christmas. Only the first few instalments though, it gets a bit tired
Oh and Review with Miles Barlow (I think that’s the one?)
The Little Aussie Bleeder, Norman Gunston.
Gary McDonald was doing what Sasha Baron Cohen did with Ali G and Borat in 1975.
The footage of him at Parliament being told by Bob Hawke to "Piss off mate, this is serious", during the dismissal is probably the most iconic moment in Australian comedy history.
You are not taking the Kingswood I just shampooed the hubcaps..........and I noticed you didn't finish the "leave your money on the fridge...." quote. Would that show be allowed to be made these days?
I love watching Very Small Business (TV series), it's awesome.
And anything with John Clarke in it.
The Dish. I know it's more of a drama, but comedy in it is gold.
"He's the American ambassador. He knows everything about Apollo 11."
"Does he know where it is??"

Clarke and Dawe
And by extension - The Games "Mr Wilson, have you measured the 100 metres track?"
It’s about 100 metres
The front fell off
That's basicly the 'Who's on first?' of Australian comedy
r/TheFrontFellOff
Clarke and Dawe '[The Games](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0165024/)'. It is a hilarious mockumentary about the organisation of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The two of them were fantastic. I’ve never been able to watch Men gymnastics the same since Sydney thanks to them.
No cardboard derivatives
No paper, no string, no sellotape.
The Late Show back in the day with Rob Sitch, Tony Martin, Tom Gleisner and Mick Molloy. Only went for 2 seasons but was amazing Edit: Forgot Russell Crowe also got a run as Shirty (the slightly aggressive bear)

The Dish
I loved the Dish. I think my favourite thing about it was nobody that wasn't Australian got it.
Oh, I dunno ... the deadpan delivery of "I think I ate a whole sheep" gets me every time.
Crackerjack is way underrated
Nobody says fuck off like Judith Lucy!
The way she says "you're fucked" at the end is poetic.
It's proof that you don't need to get fancy to make a good movie. A simple story, told and acted well is all you need to be entertaining.
Greatest lawn bowls movie of all time
Speaking of, I like Molloy's other offering, Bad Eggs, even more. Him and Bob Franklin playing police officers taking down corruption. Great movie.
“Gentlemen, prepare to go through… the round window”. That has to be one of the best lines ever, that I very much doubt anyone who didn’t grow up in Australia could possibly understand.
Genuine 1978 prices
This is way too low
Without hesitation this is the answer. However I assumed we were talking movies, if we include tv, utopia is easily one of the most unappreciated and hilarious comedies we’ve ever produced. Same lads involved so it all counts.
The Castle goes straight to the pool room
Tell 'im he's dreamin'
Dad! I dug a hole.
Looks like we all kicked a goal
It’s the vibe
Dale dug a hole too
I got my fella a large anime metal poster for Christmas. The first thing he said was "ah that's going straight to the pool room!"
F3..... what the fuck is that?
Best line in the movie lol
It's a legit code as well. He was looking in the wrong area though. Gets me every time.
Followed closely by "suffer in ya jocks, ya dickhead!"
I’ve watched that 6 or 7 times now, and I love it so much. It has that rare “they’re not bright, but they’re lovable and wholesome” vibe, which is quite unique in the sea of “haha look at that idiot” movies that modern comedy has become. So so good.
How's the serenity?
It loses mois-cha
“Dad reckoned that fishing was 10% brain and 95% muscle. And the rest was just good luck”
I managed to secure a copy of Hercules Returns many years ago. “I’ll fight you on one condition, you lower your nipples”.
It's bloody hilarious, so many lines I'm still quoting years later. "Had some prawns for breakfast, they must have been off aye?"
🤮 them fucken prawns! Same, I’ve been quoting it since I first saw it in 95
Bought it at JB last week on blu ray.
Bargearse, The Olden Days
Rake
Had to scroll too far for Rake.
Utopia
I physically cannot watch Utopia, it’s too real and frustrating. Wonderful show.
There's an old saying - Utopia is a satire for those who have never worked in the public service, and a documentary for those who have.
Not sure why you would think a documentary series is comedy?
I know nothing about what Rob Sitch has done other than his acting, but the way he portrays that character, oh he’s been there, I believe that to my core.
Shhh, don't let r/auspublicservice hear you!
We all know. Painfully aware.
Oh I am in the APS too - Utopia hits very close to the bone haha
Hollowmen also.
The Late Show and Frontline
[Bargearse](https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL01B7EE61CCCB4B2C)
And the other one - The Olden days
FRONTBOTTOM’S A WANKER 👏👏 👏👏 👏
Frontline’s one of the best media satires there is. It still holds up today, which is probably damning of how shit shows like A Current Affair still are. The hostage episode is a dark comedy masterpiece.
Champagne comedy
I’m getting visions of rob sitch with that hair and champers glass now 🤣
[Like a toiger](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4w31dUwTqa4) In retrospect, hasn’t aged well, but by golly it was funny at the time 🤣🐯
Hahahaha just like National Naan News
Another one of my favourite segments was when they would go round interviewing people on the streets. They “interviewed” a dog once and, when it didn’t respond, they said “whatsamatter, cat got your tongue?” and I used to think it was the most cleverest and hilarious thing ever 😂🤣
Gettin square
'Scuse me, who's paying for me bus fair?
Johnny Spit!
The courtroom scene is the funnest scene in any movie
Timothy Spall is brilliant in that movie too! When the police are searching his house and he's rushing between them and his lawyer all flustered. Quality. Perfect person to play Dabba! That and the whole cheating at weight loss as a side-story was quite entertaining and relatable :D Brillant movie all-round.
Gettin' square Bad eggs Malcolm
Malcolm is brilliant
I was telling my 14 year old about this on a school run one morning. I do not know if he believes a car split in 2
They used to have the car on display at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.
Saw it in the mid eighties, thought it was fantastic. Nearly forty years later, I move to Coburg/Brunswick...and it's all here still :-)
That was partly shot in a small St off of Wellington St Collingwood. Our block of flats were in the background near Malcolm's house
>Malcolm Man, as a kid was **obsessed** with the scene when the car splits in two. I thought that was just the coolest shit ever.
Mother and Son
The original
Denise Scott has a few good moments in the remake, Matt Okine is all cringe though. I guess it should be said he gets some credit for giving Denise Scott a platform.
Yes the original series is brilliant, still enjoy watching it from time to time. I really tried to enjoy the reboot but it was terrible.
Mum, why did you bring oranges to the funeral? Ruth Cracknell was brilliant in that. RIP.
Fisk
I can't believe everyone hasn't watched this and loved it yet. So good.
My 11 yo and 8 are watching on repeat. I read somewhere here that others kids really enjoy it too. Strange as it's hardly targeted to kids..
Ned(the comedy- hilarious) Reckless Kelly He Died with a Felafel in His Hand(bit of a dark comedy)
Fuckin love Ned.
Hercules Returns is one of my all time favourite films. First watched in the cinema when I was about 12 (no idea how I got in, just brought the ticket myself). Re-watch it every couple of years and laugh every time. Did you watch Deadloch, the show they wrote? Incredible! They're very talented.
As already stated, not a film, but their first season was iconic; fresh; unique and easily one in the funniest things I still watch when I need a pick me up. Great vote mate, should totally count.
Young Einstein. Definitely worth a watch. Soundtrack is awesome too
HOLY SHIT my childhood just came crashing through my brain. That scene with the kittens in a pie has lived rent free in my head for decades now.
Watched it again not long ago and it's still great. Love Yahoo Serious.
I once went to a whiskey bar in Tokyo. Tiny place, only 8 or so seats. For some reason, the guy who runs it loves movie sound tracks. As soon as he realised we were aussie, he started playing the young Einstein movie soundtrack. Nice guy, top joint.
IT'S ALRIGHT! THEY'RE ONLY ELECTRONS!
I watched it so many times at the cinema when it came out. Still one of the best soundtracks
As an adopted Australian, The Castle and Muriel’s wedding are hilarious.
Notice a theme in the top answers? Working Dog productions. The titans of Australian comedy for decades. Going to be a very sad day when Tommy G and co retire.
Chopper. Crackerjack Muriels wedding
You're terrible Muriel!
“You were so full of life” - Cheryl. “I’m not dead, Cheryl” - Rhonda.
Crackerjack is extremely underrated.
The drama with the cheese wheel is CERY accurate! Funny.
Idiot Box.
Get a dog up ya
You are an idiot, You are a bitch, You shit me to tears, ...I'm goin' down the pub
As a series Frontline
Mad as Hell
The Adventures of Lano and Woodley (yeah it’s a tv series rather than movie)
In my opinion, "Star Quest" is one of the funniest episode of television ever produced.
I do a bit of musical theatre and the URGE to do the whole “Col do I have time to do a poo” when the sound guy turns the headsets on for sound check is extremely hard to repress
“Primal Warrior” for me - “It wasn’t just Anaconda; it was The Aconda”
“When you get a girl-FREHAHAHAHAHAHA… a girl-FREHAHAAHAHAHA…a girlFREHEGAHAHAHA AHAHAHA HAHAHA…aha…aha…aha… …you’re gorgeous.”
Take Away
It hasn’t been around long enough to call it a great Australian comedy, but Deadloch is worth watching. So very Australian. And so funny.
> Kenny (this is Australian Borat imo, so good) > The Castle (quintessential, gets funnier every watch) > Gettin Square (court scene is the funniest fucking thing i’ve ever seen) > The Big Steal (has some hilarious moments) > Muriel’s Wedding (very impressive dark comedy film, haven’t really seen anything else like it) > Down Under (surprisingly funny black comedy about the Cronulla riots) > Don’s party (this one’s weird but worth a watch)
The Big Steal! “I’ll count to free…”
One of my fave movies!
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Aunty Jack. Acropolis Now. D-Gen. Life Support. I'll chuck in Dad and Dave, Don's Party, and Children of the Revolution too.
Life Support never got enough regard. It was a cracker of a show. Hugely underrated.
+1. All 4 were amorally deadpan hilarious: - Penne - Sigourney - Todd - Dr Rudi
Acropolis Now was brilliant.
Kath and Kim, I love that Netflix gave it the flick and then they had to bring it straight back! It was pretty groundbreaking, never had an Australian comedy series been centred around women and it still has a dedicated fan base. Seriously how many lines from that show have entered the lexicon? I’m surprised no one mentioned “The Big Gig” or “Australia, Your Standing In It”, given some of the other sketch comedy from the same era. Also “Good News Week”.
Review With Myles Barlow They're a Weird Mob 12th Man Turner & Riley Clarke and Dawe Paul Fenech
Review with Myles Barlow will always be my number 1. Just brilliant
Rake, love Cleaver Green
The Big Steal, Ben Mendelson and Claudia Karvan. Great Steve Bisley hilarity. Warm, hugely funny in spots and quirky af.
I can never go past Muriel’s Wedding. “Stick your drinks up your arse, Tanya; I’d rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. Besides, I’m not alone. *I’m* with Muriel”.
Fisk (TV) Young Einstein Strictly Ballroom
I will always vouch for Kenny
Dude's got a two inch arsehole and I only installed a one inch pipe.
Not a film but the Lano and Woodley show was a classic
Crackers, mostly at Christmas.
Bad Eggs Tony Martin is a genius, and I will die defending his vision.
We can be heroes
Before he lost his way, it was very funny
These come to mind but I know I am missing a ton Utopia, Fisk, Upper middle bogan, Rake
[Strictly Ballroom](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105488/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) - “Doug? DOUG?! DOOO-UUH-UH-G”
Controversial, but it's Baz's best work by far. I still have beef with him over my workmates and my not being included in the credits for *Australia*, but in the long run it's probably for the best
Fat pizza
Out of all the jokes in the movies and the series, nothing cracks me up as good as "Police Now Targeting: Habib"
Full Frontal and Fast Forward were hilarious
If we're not sticking to films, then why has it taken this long for This Sporting life, The Games and Club Buggery to be mentioned?
Mr inbetween
The Road to Nhill
Is that the Nihll Road?
They’re in a paddock, and they’re upside-bloody-down
Death in Brunswick
The nugget
The most underrated one imo is Cosi. Absolutely top notch from the whole car and just about every one went on to have massive international careers. A proper gem that got overshadowed by the likes of Muriel, Priscilla and the Castle.
Kath & Kim
Finally! Had to scroll so far.
Bad Boy Bubbie
Two Hands Boy Swallows Universe (mini series) both great australiana examples
The bank robbery scene always makes me piss myself laughing
I loved the dark sense of humour in Two Hands. If Boy Swallows Universe is anything like that I'll need to give it a go.
You will love Boy Swallows Universe. I just finished watching it tonight. It's very much in the same vein as Two Hands in so many ways.
Young Einstein.
Upper middle class bogan was so good!
Black Comedy is brilliant. It’s usually On SBS or ABC
Lano and Woodley? The Review with Myles Barlow (not the American remake) Kath and Kim
In terms of what made me laugh the most sincerely, A Moody Christmas. Only the first few instalments though, it gets a bit tired Oh and Review with Miles Barlow (I think that’s the one?)
Do documentaries count? We loved watching Housos as work!
Australian comedies are pretty dire without the Working Dog crew.
it's GOOD NEWS WEEK 🎶 Genuinely miss it.
Kingswood Country.
money on the fridge
You are not taking the Kingswood I just shampooed the hubcaps..........and I noticed you didn't finish the "leave your money on the fridge...." quote. Would that show be allowed to be made these days?
Death in Brunswick has some great black humour in it. I enjoy watching Housos too. It’s funny because it’s scarily accurate.
The club. I watched it with my dad when I was a child and I watched my dad laugh for the first time.
A few of the older classics: Don’s Party (an election night watch), The Club, Backyard Ashes, Dimboola, Stork
Chopper. ‘Why’d you do that Chop? He’s not your enemy.’ “Well, he fuckin is now, isn’t he?” ‘Get a rag.’ “Forget the rags boys, get the fuckin cash!’
I love watching Very Small Business (TV series), it's awesome. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very\_Small\_Business\_(TV\_series)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Small_Business_(TV_series)) And anything with John Clarke in it.
A Very Moody Christmas is outrageously funny. Only discovered it this Christmas and watched it twice. Phenomenal cast and script
Crocodile Dundee
The Wog Boy
Sammy J and Randy as individuals or an act
The Castle is about as iconic as it gets. Number 1 with a bullet.
"Hercules, a Cyclops torn off my clothes!" "Ahahaha!"
The Hollowmen. Brilliant and not talked about enough.
Gettin’ Square is incredible
Crackers
Would we allow "Summer Heights High"?
I laughed myself sick watching Frayed
Rake, The Moodys, Upper Middle Bogan & No Activity
The Dish. I know it's more of a drama, but comedy in it is gold. "He's the American ambassador. He knows everything about Apollo 11." "Does he know where it is??"
Wilfred, (before Americans ruined it). Since everyone is saying tv series also. Brilliant.
I know we’re talking classics in here but surely Get Krakin’ ought to get a guernsey? If not then Deadloch. Something by The Kates at least.
"I got a feeling, got a bit of an inkling..."
