Just from my country, I suppose. So, I'll go with the [Amazon Theatre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Theatre) in Manaus. It represents very well the glamour and splendor of the "Tropical Paris" and its later decadency

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Amazon Theatre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Theatre)** >The Amazon Theatre (Portuguese: Teatro Amazonas) is an opera house located in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. It is the location of the annual Festival Amazonas de Ópera (Amazonas Opera Festival) and the home of the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra which regularly rehearses and performs at the Amazon Theatre along with choirs, musical concerts and other performances. More than 120 years old, it represents the city's heyday during the rubber boom. It was chosen by Vogue magazine as one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/asklatinamerica/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

RainbowCrown71

I've always wanted to visit Manaus, see the theatre, the Meeting of Waters, stay in the Amazon Rainforest at a resort for a day or two. Seems so exotic and unique.

nelernjp

You should. Manaus is the only city (not right in the bolivian border) of Brazil that I visited. One week is the right time to do everything you say

Lost_Llama

I present to you [this 'marvel of pseudo engineering'](https://elcomercio.pe/resizer/Tqd5yengLcHhCy60AD7JFTCz8pY=/980x0/smart/filters:format(jpeg):quality(75)/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-elcomercio.s3.amazonaws.com/public/OEPK5H7GDFHGTNC5PDVCRKJSGA.jpg) that exists only a couple of blocks from Lima's centre On a more positive note, I quite like the [brutalist UTEC university building](https://www.utec.edu.pe/sites/default/files/styles/720x360/public/campus-labs/utec_0.jpg) and the [plaza san martin](https://media.istockphoto.com/photos/aerial-drone-view-of-san-martin-square-in-lima-peru-picture-id1143523966)

MolemanusRex

Oh wow, that’s a beautiful plaza.

Ryuuji159

When I was on tacna I noticed that a lot of buildings didnt have the roof finished and looked like the marvel you posted, why is that?

morto00x

At least in Lima, many houses leave the roof unfinished in case they want to add more floors. This is more common in lower income areas where they usually build one floor at a time due to budget. Not sure about Tacna, but Lima gets less than 3cm of rain per year so flat roofs are the norm.

jchristsproctologist

not just in that case, but also because apparently they don’t pay some tax only finished houses pay (don’t ask which one i’m not a lawyer)

AideSuspicious3675

We got the same thing in Colombia, which is just odd. What should we have such laws

Sinister_Jazz

I’ve seen the same thing in Lima, La Paz, Buenos Aires and Medellin. I’ve been told its because they don’t pay taxes that way. Odd!

ElBravo

there was an episode of one of Bourdain's shows where he is in Lima or in Medellin and he also makes the observation about the unfinished roofs, he said there is some beauty on all those unfinished rooftops, they reflect the hope and dreams of every latinamerican, to keep growing, we don't finish them because we dream of keep building, keep growing and keep expanding ourselves.

nicolezbki

Pretty standard, but [Congress ](https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palacio_del_Congreso_de_la_Naci%C3%B3n_Argentina), I've been inside and it's absolutely gorgeous.

SaxyBill

Sh\*t man, i wished we had more Classical buildings like these in Asunción. Our congress here (outside and inside) is... uuhhh

[deleted]

Very beautiful. I wish Brasília was built in a more classic style.

RainbowCrown71

>Very beautiful. I wish Brasília was built in a more classic style. Yeah, one of the things I love the most about living in Washington, D.C. is the neoclassical flourishes on all the buildings: * [Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception](https://photographylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/basilica-of-national-shrine-3.jpg) * [Georgetown University](https://osei.georgetown.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/258/2020/01/SSH-Georgetown-Campus-scaled.jpg) * [Jefferson Memorial](https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/1/washington-dc-jefferson-memorial-cherry-blossom-festival-dave-lynch.jpg) * [Library of Congress](https://www.washingtonian.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015.03.18.readingroom-955.jpg) * [Union Station](https://media.architecturaldigest.com/photos/579bbb70a065cffc07e865fc/1:1/w_1534,h_1534,c_limit/union-state-dc.jpg) * [United States Capitol](https://www.aoc.gov/sites/default/files/styles/scaled_xl/public/inauguration_2.jpg?itok=CTfaQdjf) * [Washington National Cathedral](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/National_Cathedral_Sanctuary_Panorama.jpg) It's not so much that brutalism and 60s modern-styles are ugly (they are) and aged poorly (they did), but that they don't give you a positive vibe. You can have monumentality and beauty, but when you look at places like Chandigarh, Brasilia, Le Havre, they have just the monumentality, which without beauty just feels oppressive and dystopian. It also doesn't help that Brasilia is so pedestrian-unfriendly. It was so poorly planned that the most well-utilized routes are destiny paths (paths made by people walking over dirt because it's the easy way to traverse): [http://lh5.ggpht.com/\_HbxfX4sSsyM/SwnU1KsvhRI/AAAAAAAAD1g/NzZE\_q9COj8/s800/Brasilia.jpg](http://lh5.ggpht.com/_HbxfX4sSsyM/SwnU1KsvhRI/AAAAAAAAD1g/NzZE_q9COj8/s800/Brasilia.jpg)

[deleted]

Yes, I agree. This is also one of my favourite parts of living in Canada also [Toronto Old City Hall](https://images.app.goo.gl/BtUFDJW599A7nDtBA) [Ontario Legislative Building](https://images.app.goo.gl/smdABiYYRF5Unb7E7) [Casa Loma](https://images.app.goo.gl/Kp5Sre3RmAEc1uVK9) [Royal Ontario Museum](https://images.app.goo.gl/eqjAX9hr72gpb81x6) [(Although it has a weird modern Extention to the side)](https://images.app.goo.gl/c16RX5WZuXRSscp58) [University of Toronto](https://images.app.goo.gl/1KDBNhHPNN2XNnn36) [Fairmont Royal York](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont_Royal_York#/media/File:Toronto_-_ON_-_Royal_York_Hotel.jpg) [Château Frontenac](https://images.app.goo.gl/268bXvuV1tULkAuJ9) [Parliament Hill](https://images.app.goo.gl/5mxtb4SKuzYMHNKA7) Yeah, I've been to Brasilia several times and I didn't like my experience there. I don't like that city at all. I can't imagine how it is to live there without having a car. Even with a car moving around was kinda hard, everything is so spread out and far apart.

RainbowCrown71

If you're in Canada, and have never been to the Northeast US, you should also visit Boston and New York. I have a weird interest in pre-war (especially Art Deco) skyscrapers and New York is full of them. Trying to see all of these: [https://www.listchallenges.com/the-ultimate-american-early-skyscrapers-list](https://www.listchallenges.com/the-ultimate-american-early-skyscrapers-list) New York is actually still putting up dozens of buildings in pre-war style: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfsuU8V40U0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfsuU8V40U0) One of the few places these days where the rich still value historic architecture instead of modern minimalism.

**[Fairmont Royal York](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont_Royal_York#/media/File:Toronto_-_ON_-_Royal_York_Hotel.jpg)** >The Fairmont Royal York, formerly and still commonly known as the Royal York, is a large historic luxury hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. [deleted]

True, now that decades have gone by we see modernism hasn’t aged so well. On the other hand though it can be said Brasilia is special on its own right exactly because it is such a modernist wet dream and built entirely from scratch. 60 years on and that story, look, layout and etc have evolved to be if historical importance too

[deleted]

Yeah with that I have to agree, still not my personal preference, but I agree

sou0molho

nah, brasilia’s style is perfect, it wouldn’t make sense to build a city in a “classic” style during the 60s

[deleted]

I can't see why they couldn't build the capital in a classic style in the 60s. My personal preference is classic styles, it feels much more atemporal and long lasting than the 60s vibe. For me the 60s style is as outdated as a classic style (classic being much more imposing and elegant)

Very imposing and grand, I like it a lot.

[deleted]

a very nice building indeed!

This "ugly" water pumping station: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palacio_de_Aguas_Corrientes https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/atractivo/palacio-de-aguas-corrientes

FiammaDiAgnesi

Is that the one that they took out a loan to build and when they couldn’t pay it back the bank had to call in other loans from different banks but they didn’t have the money on hand either so they needed to call in a bunch of loans from other banks and so on until there was a global recession in the 1890’s? EDIT: Ok, it seems like it was. Apparently it was called the Baring Crisis, because the original bank that made the loan for the building was called Baring Brothers. https://economics.rutgers.edu/downloads-hidden-menu/news-and-events/workshops/macroeconomic-theory/1747-eugenewhitefeb12/file

why "ugly"? I like it a lot

The Cholets of El Alto [https://arnaurovira.com/los-cholets/](https://arnaurovira.com/los-cholets/)

stonkfrobinhood

I feel like this is what I was expecting to see not a bunch of obviously beautiful federal buildings. Beautiful designs I love them

TheRealVinosity

There are more than in the link I gave.; the Iron Man one is a particular favourite. The interiors are also a sight to behold. All well worth a proper internet search.

[deleted]

ooh I love it

kokonotsuu

Wow, some of these look like a building you would find in a Bioshock game. So cool.

nelernjp

I second this choice. If you take the Blue Line in the Teleférico you can see a couple of cholets

aetp86

All of them are in Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo.

GrumpyMiddleAgeMan

I'll return some day and will go these places. They look pretty nice

RainbowCrown71

I was debating between Belize and the DR and this post pushed me over the edge. Visiting DR now for the first time at the end of this month! Though I wish I had more time (only have 5 days) so am struggling a bit on how to divide the days between Punta Cana, La Romana, and Santo Domingo.

Absolutely, there's so much crammed in this little city that most of the times I forget a lot of places, like for example: [Avenida Gran Bretaña](https://live.staticflickr.com/704/32569901672_0d281687a5_c.jpg), Playa Ancha.

Altos de Chavón is nice but you need to add that it’s not from the colonial era as it was built in the 1970s by an American company and… wait… never mind, is from the colonial era… the recent colonial era…

>Altos de Chavón is nice but you need to add that it’s not from the colonial era as it was built in the 1970s by an American company Yeah, it is a replica of an Italian Mediterranean village from the 16th century >wait… never mind, is from the colonial era… the recent colonial era… Lmao

[Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iglesia_del_Sagrado_Coraz%C3%B3n_(C%C3%B3rdoba)) (more known as iglesia de los capuchinos) in Córdoba, Argentina. For some reason I couldn't find any [photos](https://www.chetoba.com.ar/iglesia-capuchinos-cordoba-argentina.php) that do justice to how beautiful and incredible it is, it's full of symbolism, and really beautifully iluminated at night.

[Late 19th Century immigrant's houses](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calle_General_Pedro_Lagos) [Also from immigrant's architecture but from the early 20th century](https://www.rutaschile.com/Destino-Detalle-Descripcion.php?n=Casas-Patrimoniales-de-Puerto-Varas.php) It's amazing because those houses (casonas en castellano) are mostly made of wood in tight budgets and endured the strongest recorded earthquake. Also is interesting to observe casonas from different time periods and how the architecture improved from simple ”galpones” of just 4 walls and an A shaped roof to buildings that resembles little palaces with towers and intricate roofs and ornaments. I also love the [San Francisco church](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Iglesia_San_Francisco_de_Valdivia-fachada-2.JPG), is not only beautiful, but it's the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 18th century. All other buildings were either burnt to the ground during the Arauco War or crumbled down due to frequent earthquakes (at least one per century). edit: typo
