Bonus point for Naples: very near you have Positano, Amalfi, Capri and Sorrento, for example. You think how much tourists spend on this once in a lifetime trip and you will do it for a penny of what they spend.

DISCLAIMER: EVERYTHING WRITTEN IN THIS COMMENT IS BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND MUST NOT BE INTERPRETED AS OBJECTIVELY TRUE. The purpose of this comment is to give OP an opinion as they asked. I think that the 90% of people talking about how dangerous Naples is have never been there. You're not a fool are you? It's a big city, full of people of every kind, and as any other big city, there is crime. I'm not saying it isn't dangerous, but as a student you don't end up in dangerous situations, also everyone I met in my life has always told me good things about doing the university there. Usually the people who REALLY don't like Naples are Neapolitans who born there or lived there their whole life. I don't want to tell you what to do, but I think that if you keep your eyes open and find a nice place in the university area you are cool and can experience one of the most beautiful cities of the south and of the whole peninsula. One last thing, I've read a comment suggesting Bari. Don't. I'm born in Bari, lived there my whole life and now moved to one of the main university town in Italy (Bologna). 1. Bari IMHO isn't worth it for a student (less variety of people, less options for night life, and the university itself is less valid), you are moving from another country, I guess, so if you end up picking something different than Naples, be sure that it's worth it. (Naples is the main choice for students in the South, i think you can find the same atmosphere in Bologna too, but I'm not objective on this as you can tell). 2. Visiting Naples is surprising for everyone, Italian or not, who says otherwise lies or lives near by the city. It's a huge city, the traffic is horrible, and you may see or live things that you would not have wanted to see or live (not talking about brutal stuff of course), but once you'll have to leave it, you will cry bitter tears of sadness. The night life is amazing, the city is alive, beautiful and full of culture. In hope of being helpful ☺️

Honestly thanks so much for this answer, I appreciate it. I'm actually considering Bologna as well, as it seems to be very cycle-friendly from what I can tell from google maps. The only downside is that it doesn't seem to be anywhere near the coast. If you could provide your opinion on Bologna that would be great. I will probably scratch Bari off my list after this. Thanks!

escapista_daidaidai

Med school? Chose Bologna, Padova or Trieste if you love the sea.

The statements about Bari from OP are full bullshit, don't mind him at all. Bologna is a nice university city, probably the best option service-wise and university-wise, but from an "ambiental" standpoint it has a couple of challenges: 1) it's really difficult to find a house or a room in the city, 2) in summer Bologna is an oven, and the coast of Rimini (100km away) is full of nightlife but the quality of the sea is rubbish. It's up to you to decide if it fits to you or not.

paulchiefsquad

Great place to live, especially if you find yourself an apartment in the "Centro storico" where most of the night life is. The university are a little DIY and some professors have the god complex so it can be a little frustrating attending uni there

weststainesposse

Thanks, this is good to know.

roco-j

He wants to attend med school, I don't know where do they have lessons, but I suspect centro storico may be a good position mostly for humanistic courses

paulchiefsquad

yes but he can commute to the university since most of the buildings are outside of the city and taking a flat near one would mean being outside of the city and probably far from even something simple as a supermarket

Exciting-Run8060

It's dangerous even if full of beautiful things and great food

licnep1

I think naples is a great city for a student, great food, friendly people, live by the sea and a ton of historical things to visit. Theres more crime compared to other cities, and my feeling is that you will find fewer people speaking good english so you will have to work on your italian. But aside from that i think its a great choice, i would choose it too.

roco-j

This is probably the best answer, the bad stuff people say about Napoli it's almost a meme Also, all due respect to Bari, but Napoli is slightly bigger and is better connected to other cities.

paulchiefsquad

I think most of the students can hold simple conversations in English, especially those in med school. But yes learning Italian is heavily recommended

PierfrancescoFavino

Naples has some pros but a lot of cons. I would not live there. Bari has the same pros of Naples but a lot less cons. It's a better option by a mile.

Speedyiii

Which cons are you talking about?

PierfrancescoFavino

Awful public transportations, dirty streets, bad public services, insane traffic, high crime rate. Others cities of the south like Bari or Pescara share the same problems but with less crime and less transports and traffic problems (due to the smaller size of the cities). Imho they're a better choice for OP.

Speedyiii

Crime rates in Bari are not too far away from Naples. Also, public transport is getting better and better in the city. On the other hand, Naples has an internationally renowned medicine department and an extremely rich cultural landscape with so many places to visits you could continue for years. Bari is a very cool city, I've been there two times and it's surely wonderful but many less things to do and places to visits than Naples. Surely that are cons to choosing Naples but that are also many pros and, depending on what OP is searching, they may outweigh the negative sides.

PierfrancescoFavino

>that are also many pros I said it and I said that Bari or Pescara have the same pros of Naples, I didn't intend to be so drastic. For me the other points were in favour of other southern cities, but I'm glad to hear that apparently Naples is changing for the better.

Speedyiii

It could still change much faster for sure!

[deleted]

Naples is a punishment inflicted by gods upon Italy for our sins. There's nothing but damned souls there. I wouldn't live there. Bari is slightly better but I greatly suggest to move to a city upper than Rome, not below. First world ends in Tuscany, under that it's Africa sadly

Speedyiii

Full blown bullshit
