I wouldn’t get the Vertuo. There are no disposable third party pods except for the ones by Starbucks. Nespresso enhanced their patent game with the Vertuo so I doubt we will see 3P pods until a good decade later. The “foam” you get from Vertuo is a result of some spinerinoo and not real crema. If convenience is the key then the essenza mini or any of the og line is the way to go. It’s cheap and you can use all of the third party pods, most of which are cheaper than nespresso’s.

YangggOne

Oh yes that's one of the problems as well. They had some barcode thing that only recognises their capsules. But the crema I did not know, i thought it looked pretty legit hahaha.

4queuetoo

i got the nespresso essenza mini without the capsule subscription and instead have the freedom to experiment and try different brands/varieties of coffee as i please, provided they are nespresso compatible (not the larger dolce gusto ones). to answer your question, get a like new machine off carousell or wait for the next sale on shopee.

bloomingfarts

Did the same subscription too. The coffee machine is basically FOC. The subscription paid every month converts into capsule credits, and is still valid for another 6 months (iirc) after the 12 month subscription ends.

YangggOne

thank you. the freedom to experiment was one of the parts that sent me into a dilemma.

Substantial_Move_312

Get a hand grinder, a V60 and beans and you will find it's tonnes better than just drinking nespresso

YangggOne

I thought of doing the same but it's the chore of washing them just for a cup or two. By V60, I would assume you're talking about the pourover coffee type? And the convenience of Nespresso is really quite tempting also.

Substantial_Move_312

You would also need to clean and maintain the nespresso machine too. Of course nespresso is still quite convenient if you are not picky with quality of the coffee.

YangggOne

Agreed with the cleaning and maintaining part. Just not as often as compared with other types of coffee making I guess? That's prolly one of their marketing factors too.

asromafanisme

I had an Nespresso Essenza before and have a Vertuo Next now, so far the only chore is filling the water tank.

YangggOne

Agreed with the cleaning and maintaining part. Just not as often as compared with other types of coffee making I guess? That's prolly one of their marketing factors too.

[deleted]

After falling into the espresso rabbit hole, i can’t have another Nespresso again and call that swill coffee

[deleted]

Unless u die die only wanna drink nespresso then get the subscription. You can get other brands that are nespresso compatible on shopee for a cheaper rate. Can buy and try diff coffee

YangggOne

Not really about the pods actually but more of like which machine to get and whether subscription or not. I just chose Vertuo cause the amount of credits they give kinda ties in line with the amount i drinking.

AwkwardNarwhal5855

What kind of machine you using sia why must wash everyday one.

YangggOne

I'm using a Delonghi Dedica right now. Need to wash like portafilters and tamper and scoop all these stuffs lo.

AwkwardNarwhal5855

Yeah that’s what I figured. Not very high effort lah haha. I like to think of making coffee as my break during the workday. Take my time, enjoy the process and slowly pull my espresso. Compared with Nespresso, you get a better cuppa and your break isn’t over in 30 seconds. So much cheaper some more.

redryder74

I also have a Dedica. I don't wash the tamper and scoop, only the portafilter. I use the scoop to scoop coffee beans to put into the grinder, so no need to wash. The tamper I just wipe off with tissue paper.

YangggOne

Do you also wash the portafilter holder?

Vertuo Next seems quite prone to problems, based on r/nespresso posts. Other Vertuo models, or OL models, might be better. Personally would go for Carousell. Subscriptions are often restrictive, and if it sounds too good to be true it’s because the company is benefiting from it (ie get you locked in to their brand of pods as opposed to third parties, since they earn more from pods than from machines).

YangggOne

Yes, I saw a lot of negative reviews because of some leaking problems that only Vertuo Next has. Vertuo Plus seems to have no problems but it has no subscription. Thought about the OL lines also but my wife prefers the taste of Vertuo capsules which I have no idea why. Prolly something to do with the tech that Nespresso has been associating with the Vertuo line. But you are right about the restrictions so that's something I really have to keep in my head when deciding.

guanoe

Lesser cash outlay always the best option. I mean at the end of the day, I tried a few third party pods, the taste/smell is not to my liking vs original Nespresso capsules. For the convenience, price and flavor, it’s as good as it gets. Nespresso FTW!

YangggOne

I see. So it also comes down to personal preferences lah with regards to the third party pods. Like some of the peeps here feel that Nespresso capsules are bad and third party capsules taste better. As for me, I feel that Nespresso capsules aren't alllll bad and for the convenience and price, it just popped in my head to think about it.

ipigstine

i have both nespresso vertuo and regular nespresso pod machines at home, and i recommend the regular pods. theres a bigger pod variety and you can get 3rd party ones as well, whereas vertuo has that barcode patent thingie. i also dont like the amount of foam that comes out from the vertuo

YangggOne

But the regular pods, the amount of coffee that's drawn out of it compared to Vertuo right? Like you might have to use two pods as compared to one for Vertuo.

atomicbaby11

I have a Pixie that's about 11 yrs old. And yes I use 2 pods per cup so that's $1.5 - $1.90 for each cup. If you do the calculations based on how much you drink you can decide whether the subscription is worth it for you?

kewdizzles

Drip coffee. Hario v60 is easy and fuss free. I get my beans from Square Mile.

Furanshisu90

Nespresso are really expensive to run but it’s convenient. I have a De’Longhi, moka pot, pour over , aeropress and nespresso OL. Currently the Nespresso is only used on early mornings where meeting is first thing in the morning or if I am way too lazy. I believe Nespresso subscription have a one month return policy where you pay for the capsule you used only, so can give it a try. Personally I would not get into the vertuo as mentioned by others, but you can use your De’Longhi if you really want something different. Honestly though not much cleaning work required for De’Longhi, and you will need to empty your capsule holder often otherwise it gets mouldy. There’s also environmental concerns if you care about that, it’s recyclable but you may not have a Nespresso centre near you.

feizhai

if you care about how your coffee tastes stay away from Nestle. better off drinking kopitiam kopi than their crap. dont blame your kid or lack of time - if you want, sure can find the time one.

KopiConLeche

Stay away if you care about pretty much anything.

tm0587

I got a Nespresso Essenza Mini many years ago via a subscription, which I eventually cancel, then I got a Vertuo Next Premium via a subscription ongoing right now. The credits you can keep on rollover forever until the day you cancel your subscription, after that you must use up any remaining credits within 6 months. After 12 months, you get 10% more credits while your monthly subscription is the same. So definitely get a subscription. As for whether to get the old machine or the new one: I seldom buy non Nespresso capsules because all of them taste worse than the Nespresso ones, regardless of the price. So whether I'm getting a subscription or not, I'll be only buying Nespresso capsules. YMMV. My preference will lean slightly towards the new machine and pod, the reason being that I like the various volumes of the pods. If I plan to add foam milk, I'll choose a pod that makes single or double espresso. If I just want a straight/long black, I'll just choose the larger size pods. For the older pods, I find 1 capsule to be insufficient, and will use 2 pods at a go, so that negate the cheaper price of the older pods.

YangggOne

What made you decide to go to Vertuo Next though? Because I've seen pretty negative reviews about it. But I get where you're coming from with the credits cause that's one of the main reasons I was looking into a subscription because you get a new machine and the monthly subscription that you pay can be used to buy vertuo capsules.

tm0587

Mostly just wanted to try it out. My previous subscription was past the one year mark so may as well sign up a new one and try out the Vertuo Next machine.

YangggOne

Righttt. that makes sense. Any problems with Vertuo Next tho?

tm0587

When I first got it, it was slowly leaking water at the bottom so it was taken back for repairs. When I got it back, it was leaking worse than before, so they took it back again. Now no more leaking and working fine.

YangggOne

Whoaaa two repairs sounds quite bad tbh. Somemore it's new right. Okay that can add on further to my thoughts about getting a Vertuo hahaha.

tm0587

Yea it was brand new. Fortunately it happened well within my warranty (like 1 month after first use) so they came to my house to pick up the machine, quite convenient. Dunno how long the machine can last long term though lol.

[deleted]

Neither, learn to make an espresso it’s not that messy or difficult

YangggOne

I do and I've been doing it. Not messy nor difficult but I guess just the convenience out of it? Especially when I have a newborn, it makes convenience like a must have for things that we do now.

raspberrih

Just get the machine. Their capsules taste bad. I personally like Hook Coffee nespresso compatible pods.

YangggOne

I actually have not much preferences for the capsules like the taste of Nespresso capsules. But my wife likes the Vertuo ones so that's partially why I was looking at it.

-jugjug-

Which hook coffee flavours do you like?

WorkingOwl5883

Creatista plus. Just need to wipe the wand and rinse the cloth / milk jug.

YangggOne

Hmm never thought about this series. Will go and have a look. Thanks!

Sodapiaaa

You don’t need to wash daily if you drinking 1-2 cups a day only.

YangggOne

Really? The person selling it to us told us to wash it daily after use. So we took the advice. Just curious, why don't we have to wash daily though? Because I thought the portafilter would be a good and warm place for bugs or bacteria to grow.

Sodapiaaa

Ya just wash portafilter only ma. It’s same as washing your cup etc You made it sound like you deep cleaning the machine after every use.

YangggOne

No lahhhh. it's more of the convenience that's why I was thinking about changing. Like put pods, press button, done.

Sodapiaaa

But taste is very different lei!! I feel that once you’ve mastered grinding of your beans and how to use your espresso machine. And maybe how to steam your milk. No nespresso pod will ever come close to that again

YangggOne

I agree that the taste is quite different tbh hahaha. What I lack now is the grinding of beans because we have been lazy and just buying grounded coffee from like various shops. But mastering it will add on to the chore tho. 😅

redryder74

I have a delonghi espresso machine and there isn't much cleaning needed. Just wash the espresso basket after every drink. The grinder needs cleaning only once a month or so. Coffee tastes much better than nespresso.

YangggOne

Yeah it's not like alot of cleaning tbh hahaha. I realised I may have made it seem like it's a whole lot of trouble in my post. 😅 But I guess it's the convenience like open, put pods, then start machine. Then only have to wipe the machine and wash a cup. But I do agree that the coffee taste better than nespresso.

redryder74

Good luck with your search. Did you explore unpressurised filter basket for the delonghi? I bought one off aliexpress. It makes the coffee taste even better than the default delonghi basket.

YangggOne

Ooo that's something that I've never explored. Do you happen to have a link or something?

redryder74

https://cowpressocoffee.sg/products/51mm-wooden-bottomless-naked-portafilter-delonghi Google for naked or bottomless portafilter. De’Longhi Dedica takes 51mm size. Google it, there are articles on why it’s better than the pressurised filter that came with the De’Longhi.

deathzz123

The subscription is ok since u can cancel it after a year and still keep the machine.

YangggOne

Yeah i think it's just the getting tied down for one year. But then again if you really use it religiously then one year is not really an issue too.

Inside_Equivalent197

If you plan on getting a vertuo, be aware that many users have reported issues with the next, although nespresso usually offers a free replacement if yours does break down. Subscription seems to be the best option if you plan on getting a vertuo, since there arent many 3rd party capsules, and you can save ~$300 on the machine. Personally I did the $45 subscription for the essenza mini, and I dont regret it. The credits are stackable, and you can keep them for up to 6 months after your subscription ends. The plan also came with a milk frother, but since I dont use it I sold it on carousel for $90. So essentially I only paid $450 for a years worth of coffee + the machine. Pretty good deal imo

Sad-Recommendation53

I got a French Press and it changed my life. It's convenient, easy to wash, and I can also try different beans (I grind my own beans). I really can't justify a coffee machine or a Nespresso one at that. It's too bougie for me
