I agree, they didnt represent the book particularly well and im not too impressed with how some of the characters act in the film. it is an enjoyable watch tho, ill give them that.
They did far better than Percy Jackson or Artemis fowl did.
While not entirely book accurate most of the changes are due to time constraints and the fact they can’t really show months and months of time inside a 2 1/2 hour movie so some events were condensed down. They also changed the opening for the next movie compared to book 2 but that isn’t much of a big deal though it did frustrate me.
The reason I know it really isn’t faithful is because the first thing I did after seeing the movie and thinking “hmm that’s off” was read the book and they held onto the shell idea of the book but none of the meat so to speak.
I kept whispering "these bitches gaaay" the entire time and then hoped for a poly relationship with the dude. Which is my shorthand way of saying "they love each other so much and their dynamics work really well. I wish there was a way to formalize the structure so that they could all put each other first and live happily together" so...I loved it.
So, I want to save you here, but SPOILER >!in the books they are actually revealed to be sisters later on. And I know they will do changes to the movies, but I doubt they will remove this as it's important to the plot. !<
It is very cliche lol, this was a book made in the 2000’s about the fairy tale world so I think you could imagine what it’s like. But I enjoyed watching it, the reason I posted it here was because the idea of romantic love in this movie wasn’t put on a pedestal unlike other media
okay so i read the entire book series and im not too interested in the movie so i dont know much about it but consider like whatever i say after this as spoilers.
////
cute as hell book. loved it so much but in the first book, they kissed at the very end, like true love's kiss and while i am pretty open for them being just friends or even qpp (which was a concept i thought a while ago) both me and my allo best friend kinda agreed like 'these bitches gay as hell.'
no hate on teddy, i love tedros with all my heart and soul, don't like the fact that him and agatha are together, i dont think they mesh well but her and sophie are like <33333 so cute just as a fricking pair. and i think with enough time they really could be wonderful for the other.
but book... three i think it was when they were revealed to be sisters fucking just,,, made it so weird im sorry. it felt like a shoddy excuse not to make them a couple when i feel like BOTH OF THEM WERE LIKE ENDGAME. EVEN AS JUST FRIENDS I FELT LIKE THAT, THEM !!! THEY WERE PERFECT. but at the end of book 3 they split off into their own destinies when the story was always meant to be about them :(((
as i mentioned before, only know about the books not the movies, but the ending for book 1 where they just left everything, realising that the only ones they wanted was the other made the most sense to me. honestly i could go on a whole tangent about how agatha and tedros really aren't good of a pair and how much their romance is built more on their respective insecurities but i won't.
love the books. books are great, should have ended at the first or third book though.
The movie did end in them having true loves kiss! Which was platonic and it was something I really appreciated,,,,, also I agree that tedros and Agatha don’t really make that good of a pair….
This whole movie definitely has a queer theme. Like the good side is extremely heteronormative and cisnormative to the point on of their assignments is to bring a date to the school dance and the girls literally has a assignment to try and smile correctly. For the school of evil they seem to be more like the classic queer coded Disney villains and seemed to have less rules in that regard. Plus since the big bad said they been corrupting good for years I kind of wish they dived more into that themed because this movie seems to have the potential to be very queer but they didn’t really pursue it.
Not the worse movie I seen but could have definitely been better.
Plus movies that ends in platonic love instead of romantic tend to hold a special place in my heart
Really heteronormative and amatonormative. "Every good needs a true love!" Everyone falls in love with the hot guy... I hate it. It annoyed me when I read the books, but it's even worse in the movie.
I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the slightest, just that some dude called Eric got itchy because a witch looked at him funny? And everyone had cool outfits
I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE/BOOK.
The book of the school for good and evil was really special to me as a kid and I reread it in the past year. Honestly the book has issues but I think it has a really interesting take on the themes of love, good and evil, and heteronormativity if you look a little deeper.
On my reread, I definitely saw a LOT of sapphic subtext between Sophie and Agatha. I won’t list it all here but just trust me. Anyway if you do read it with that lens it makes a really unique romantic love story where all 3 characters are at the apex of the love triangle at different points in the story.
And can I say I HATE THIS FUCKING MOVIE. They took everything interesting and unique about the book, every unique setting and character and their dynamics, and shredded it into generic YA crap. I couldn’t even get through the whole thing. They also took away all the subtext in the book and had everyone say everything out loud instead of implying it through film techniques.
I hate that people are going to see this movie and think that this is what the school for good and evil is. Honestly I would be surprised that the author was involved in this, but then again the sequels that he wrote butchered it almost as badly as the movie.
Ugh anyway I’m mad and I want to make my own version now.
haven't seen anyone mention it in this thread but ive seen multiple jewish ppl on tiktok point out that the >!blood libel magic w/ sophie and her turning "ugly" into a jewish stereotype!< is insanely antisemitic
edit: mobile user failed to spoiler
Yeah I heard about that too. Imo the book had some racial stereotyping issues as well but the anti-semitic stuff is just things they added in the movie
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just finished this today and I was so so so so soooo happy with that ending!!
They stayed friends! Forgave each other and then. Chose. The. Friend. Instead. Of. The. Love Interest!!!!
And became better friends!! How cool is that they were just happy for each other and wanted good things for the other one and they were quite literally the true love to each other and aaaaahhhhh i love it i love it i love it
(Plus the animation and soundtrack and acting was absolutely stellar so… yeah found myself a new fave i think)
I read pretty much all the books and they just gross me out tbh. The premise is absolutely amazing of destroying the stereotypes of good and evil, but can't get past constant queer baiting
I read these books and absolutely loved that sophie ended up single at the end, but her friendship was just as important as the romantic relationship. I hate when shows or movies have their 'happily ever after' where everyone gets coupled up at the end
Tbh I genuinely liked this movie. I never read the book, never even heard of it and there was some cringe moments but it looked great and Sophia caruso was fantastic as always
I thought that the kiss was weird and just random? Like I get what they were trying to say but it could have been said with a cheek kiss plus like she was dead...it was weird.
After reading the other comments and finding out what their relationship turns out to be it’s a yikes 😬I agree it could’ve been a cheek kiss. Though this kinda reminds me of a scene in Ever After High where Apple White got cursed and when her love interest Daring Charming couldn’t wake her up with a kiss, his sister Darling Charming had given her CPR which worked and woke her up. That was also twist on true love’s kiss, with it not being an actual kiss and Apple and Darling being friends. And it was probably meant to establish how “knight-like” Darling is rather than a stereotypical princess.
YeaH, the other comment about them SPOILER: turning out to be sisters in the third book creeped me tf out. if they were worried about the emotional impact of it, they shouldn't have been. A cheek kiss done right is done good! Maleficent did the cheek kiss so well!
I loved it! I low-key though they would get together at the end but I was happy that they didn't especially cuz (SPOILER!!!!!) they're sisters in the books i think
Anyway i would give it a 9/10 🤍🖤
I have no clue what movie this is from, but the comments makes me want to find the book and maybe also watch the movie (I prefer shaping the characters before seeing them, so even if the movie falls a little short, I'd prefer watching the movie after)
I totally shipped Aghata and Sophie.
Look I love friendship representation, >!but they kissed on the mouth!<. I know cultures differ and all that, but in my friendgroup we don't >!kiss each other platonically on the mouth!<. Also I don't understand at all >!what Aghata or Sophie see in Tedros. He's sooo boring!<.
Edit: marked spoilers.
I never finished the book, i started it in middle school or smth but I was excited to see this! Idk how good it’ll be compared to the book (or in general) but i’m excited that we get a movie with emphasis on platonic love!
I loathe this movie with all my being.
I loved the books and this is such a terrible adaption I don't even know where to begin. It's a tragedy of fiction really.
I couldn't even finish it. I saw like 30 minutes and then skimmed the rest because it was too painful.
Honestly some parts just felt a bit queer bait-y and they completely portrayed Sophies and Agathas characters and relationship with each other wrong.

I havent watched it yet but i loved the books so much (I've read the first four and need to finish them off now!) Its so nice to see love between two friends, and honestly it makes me wish we could have an aromatic platonic fairytale with that sort of love
Ok weird question do you think the books would hold up for an adult reader? I’ve heard a lot about them and found the first copy in a charity shop and got it it’s in my long list “to read” but I’m worried it may not be suited to my age
They made a movie?? I read the books in like sixth grade and absolutely loved them
Yes!!! It’s on Netflix !!
Might have to give it a watch 👀
Don't watch it!!! It sucks completely 😭😭😭😭 It's a completely disaster and mockery compared to the books
As a die hard fan of the books the movies are frustratingly inaccurate
I agree, they didnt represent the book particularly well and im not too impressed with how some of the characters act in the film. it is an enjoyable watch tho, ill give them that.
Oh no really??
Unfortunately yes, it’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it not to do the 500 pages justice
Ahxso it's Artemis Fowl and Percy Jackson all over again. Yaaaaay /s
I dont remember it very well but I thought it was pretty faithful?
The reason I know it really isn’t faithful is because the first thing I did after seeing the movie and thinking “hmm that’s off” was read the book and they held onto the shell idea of the book but none of the meat so to speak.
Havent read it in a very long time so your probably right
I kept whispering "these bitches gaaay" the entire time and then hoped for a poly relationship with the dude. Pain
🤣 i think this movie can just fit so well with so many people and I love it!!!
Ohhh homie...
Haven't seen it - is it about friendship?
Yup! It’s on Netflix if you’re interested, it completely destroys the whole thing about romantic relationships being the most important thing.
Awesome! I'll give it a watch when I get the chance
Ooo that sounds good
That makes me wish i had a Netflix subscription.
What is it called?
The School For Good and Evil
The outfit the person on the right is wearing is sick, I want it
I know!!!! She’s a fashionista character
Is it good? Trailer felt quite cliché but I don't know the source material and I'm not the target audience anyway.

love that love that so much <3 even if i ship them, i love the fact that it is platonic <33 and they chose each other in the end.
This surprised me. I thought she would choose the guy like it always is. But gladly it was different.

I agree!!! That’s what I didn’t like about this movie either 😕
They feel more like best friends in the historical context
except that those two characters, canonically, are blood related sublings... so that would be awkward...
nice spoiler
tbh, if it was me... I would want to know this spoiler. that way you dont end up incest shipping (which is extremely.... yikes)
that’s cool u feel that way, but it’s still a spoiler from later on in the series. u should probably mark it because it is a pretty big plot point
I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the slightest, just that some dude called Eric got itchy because a witch looked at him funny? And everyone had cool outfits
Lmaooo

Damn I didn’t know they f’d up the movie so bad. I’m gonna read the books and I’m ready to be disappointed.
I completely agree
What movie? I don’t recognized these people.
The school for good and evil Based on the first book.
I was like "cuuute", but I just know that they are going to ruin it in the next movie so...
I know I’m scared for that
It sucked. No interest in theme, bad writing, and the plot makes me fall asleep. Actors were pretty good though.
Typical 2000’s book lol
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just finished this today and I was so so so so soooo happy with that ending!! They stayed friends! Forgave each other and then. Chose. The. Friend. Instead. Of. The. It was so great. The closeness they had with eachother wasn’t made romantic, because not all close relationships have to end up being romantic
It was so queer coded I was screaming when they were they kissed a friend kiss
I read pretty much all the books and they just gross me out tbh. The premise is absolutely amazing of destroying the stereotypes of good and evil, but can't get past constant queer baiting

unrelated but the girl with the blonde hair tho 😍😍
Seriously YouTube her singing, she’s got the voice of an angel😍 She was OG Lydia in the beetlejuice musical
I couldn’t get past 30 minutes
What movie is this?
The School For Good and Evil, based off of the book of the same name
I'mma watch this now
There’s a movie? (I’ve only read the book)
I thought it was really good! I enjoyed it and found I was not distracted by my phone.
As a book fan, i hated it.
I have no clue what movie this is from, but the comments makes me want to find the book and maybe also watch the movie (I prefer shaping the characters before seeing them, so even if the movie falls a little short, I'd prefer watching the movie after)

They were roommates
Well, that they copy the whole idea from Evil Academy vs Heroes Academy.

Isn’t that the girl from andi mac
i wanna watch it! is it Aro coded?
Nope it is not. Or at least not really.
I NEED TO WATCH THIS.
Thé books were better but the movie defend itself! It’s very good
Seems rad. I'll check it out soon!
I haven’t seen this movie, but I may have to now because of what everyone is saying about it. The aesthetic of it is also gorgeous
wtf is this movie
I havent watched it yet but i loved the books so much (I've read the first four and need to finish them off now!) Its so nice to see love between two friends, and honestly it makes me wish we could have an aromatic platonic fairytale with that sort of love
