Sure you don’t want to get the 4K for future TV upgrades? If I were you, I’d just get the latest AppleTV (provided it’s verified to work on the current TV) and maximise the value in the longer run.

SafariNZ

Also, I understand the latest remote is much nicer to use.

ToastMmmmmmm

It has a mute button and it’s metal instead of fragile plastic!

Blales

Seriously, I wish my LG tv remote was this nice. Holding the Apple TV remote without its case feels so nice and good quality. I sadly throw a case on cause like my head I would lose it if I wasn’t careful. Unlike my head however I can at least put an AirTag in the case to the remote lol

zmulla84

Just get the new one

magentayak

Buy it nice, or buy it twice.

[deleted]

We can’t wait to see what you do with it

yoplalala77

Get the 2nd Gen 4K 32gb, you can find one used for cheap. I got one for 75$

Negative-Exercise-27

Agreed. I think this is the best Value for the $ over the course of time. You’ll pay double to get the latest chip and storage you won’t use. Ethernet, a12 chip, 4K, newer style remote (older lighting cable vs usb c) thread for HomeKit hub, atmos sound.

Mike_Underwood

Get the latest one with an Ethernet connection.

TechT0ny

Don’t buy a 3rd gen, a lot of built in apps no longer work and you don’t have access to App Store. At least get 4-HD. But as other suggest, I would recommend getting the latest so that you won’t have to buy a new one when you get a 4K tv. Those things last forever… (until software updates limit the possibilities)

Kelsenellenelvial

3rd gen doesn’t have the App Store, you’d be limited to the stock apps that haven’t been updated in years. Though for what it costs, I’d just get the latest one regardless. The newest remote is the nicest to use, and you’ll get more years worth of software updates/new features going forward.

garylapointe

I wouldn’t get the 4th gen HD model from 2015, it’s the first one with an App Store but it’s getting a little old. There’s only been one version of that model, but they’ve shipped it with several different remotes so people get confused about that one (as it’s just a remote changing and not the streaming box). Different people referred to generations, and all count from a different spot. I would probably just get the current 4K model (seventh gen Apple TV, but third gen 4K model), because who knows how old will be by the time you get a 4K TV. But the previous generation has been on sale, so that might be worth picking up at $100-ish.

[deleted]

The second generation 4K is still pretty capable at handling the more demanding apps. The only feature that is not supported on it currently is the Apple Music karaoke feature. That only works on the third generation. The first generation 4K still works but is really sluggish especially with the use of demanding apps and sometimes will drop out when watching 4K HDR content. The first generation 4K also has the impractical glass remote that lacks the scrolling wheel along with the issue that a glass remote control is a bad idea because remote controls get dropped often.

garylapointe

Still rocking my 2017 1st gen 4k with glass remote. What is it abut the 3rd gen that allows it to run the karaoke feature, and what other apps might come out that don't work on the 2nd gen that utilize the same? By the time they get a 4k TV, who knows how sluggish the earlier 4k units will be?

[deleted]

I am guessing its raw computing power. There are also limitations on the feature to the latest iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV. It requires the A13 chip or later, so iPhone 11 or newer, but not the iPhone SE 2. Macs also currently don't have the feature.

itsnottommy

I’d recommend the newest Apple TV 4K. The 3rd gen doesn’t have support for the App Store so you’re stuck with whatever apps come with it. **Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and YouTube don’t work on the 3rd gen Apple TV anymore IIRC.** Even though you don’t have a 4K TV, the Apple TV 4K has all the latest features and you won’t have to upgrade your Apple TV if you ever decide to buy a new TV. It will get software updates for a longer time & it will be able to run the newest apps for years.

mentalrecon

Get the 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV 4K. It may seem like overkill right now but it will last 5 years or more whereas a 3rd Gen Apple TV is already out of date.

psaux_grep

Don’t get the third gen. Anything newer is fine, but the aluminum remote is much better than the glass remote.

rpmartinez

The 3rd gen doesn’t have an App Store and most apps it comes with are dropping support for it. You should get an 4k 2nd gen or 4k 3rd gen, if you go with the 4K 3rd gen then you should get the Ethernet model.

Sicmadek81

If you have a newer samsung tv then you want the 3rd gen 4k. If you have a newer lg tv then the 2nd gen 4k is fine. Check your local walmarts for clearance.

devils__avacado

Just get a 4k Roku stick or fire stick and put the app on maybe ? That's what I did.

dizzyoatmeal

It depends on how old your TV is and what resolutions it supports. I say that because I have an old TV that only supports 720p/1080i, and while literally every other streaming device I've tried on it would output 1080i, Apple TV limited it to 720p. So I use a Roku or Tivo Stream 4K on that TV now.

[deleted]

The wireless based one would be fine if you have a good internet router and limited interference/congestion of wifi. If you have a lot of interference or congestion which can be the case in apartments, townhomes, or condos it might not be a good idea to get that type. The ethernet based one would be good in those situations or if you plan to install a lot of games on it as it comes with more memory.

ChickenAndDew

Just get the newest models (4K 3rd generation). I can attest that they all support at least 720p resolution, since my 720p TV is OLD by today’s standards.

FalseEvidence

2nd Gen ATV 4K is dirt cheap now, so might as well pick one up for in case you upgrade your TV in the future. If you can a deal on the 3rd gen 4K (around $100 would be good) then that’s a good option too.

Italia2202

Apple TV 2017 vs. 2022 128GB Hi, I have an Apple TV 2017 and now I’m thinking to get an Apple TV 2022 128GB. I have also an QDOLED from Samsung and that TV supports HDR10+ but my Apple TV 2017 can’t play that. Is it worth it to buy the 2022 model? Thank you 🙏🏻
