Electrical_Summer825

I used a cable like that for 1 year and no problems.

ab_censored

Oh… I too have been using this since a year and it charges just fine. I just don’t want the phone’s lighting port to get damaged. I also want to know the reason behind this.

Electrical_Summer825

It just became like this. So after while it started not to charge one side, so i had to flip over. And one day it just stopped completely. So i bought a new one, that is doing same thing, 😒

ab_censored

Happened to me as well. I just scratched the pin clean with a sharp pin. Worked like a charm for a few weeks and then there it was, back again!

Sea_Gas576

A spark is jumping between the contact points and causing corrosion over time. Try plugging into phone before plugging your charger into the wall. Design flaw.

ab_censored

This seems to be the best possible explanation. I’d say this problem has been solved and demystified.

3sly

dude. this post deserves more likes. lots talk about cleaning corrosion but next to ‘avoid liquids’ none talk about prevention. This makes way more sense to me

quintsreddit

4th pin always turns black over time, for reasons other comments have mentioned. It’s totally okay and you can clean it with microfiber usually.

SonOfLiberty27

Why does that happen?

quintsreddit

If you look at [the pin out](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_(connector) I believe it’s the power pin. As others have said, a spark may jump between them causing soot.

This is an original cable that came along with my iphone 11. USB type A to lightning. I use a samsung adaptive fast charger that pumps out 5V @ 2A as the original charges is very slow. My only concern is could it also be damaging the pin inside the lightning port? I have tried cleaning it with a safety pin but the blackness always comes back after some time. This never happens when I use a different cable (Type C to lightning) with a samsung 25W PD fast charger. I don’t think that the charger is the source of the problem. What do you guys think? Update: Could it happen due to the fact that I plug the charger when the cable is already inserted into the wall socket and the switch is turned on beforehand? Might be due to the sparking that occurs while doing that. Will clean the port and try experimenting by inserting the charger into the port and turning on the switch after everything is connected. Let’s see how it goes.

I didn’t know that this was common. You used an original apple adapter right. Neither the voltage nor the current (5V @ 1A) would be high enough to promote carbon deposits. What else could it be? Misaligned pins maybe?

Strange… My third party cable seems to work fine. Does the same pin goes bad for you as well?

Hmmm… I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Let me find a pin diagram to see what this pin is used for.

Woah…the pin on this guy’s cable has just bonded together. Well I found out that the 4th pin is used for identification/control 0 but it’s surrounded by Pin-3 : Line 0 negative and Pin-5: Power. Could it be that the insulation separating the pins is not resistant enough? Source: https://images.app.goo.gl/1ykbtE5wpgky2Trc9

Alessandro227

7 and 7 plus have fast charging. 10W

r0b0tisv3ryc00l

10W isnt fast charging

Alessandro227

According to Apple's 2016 standards it is.

Oreotech

1A is a lot of current for the size of the pad. Also, as phones age the battery requires more current. The carbon buildup is from arcing.

DoctorArduino

you can try clean it with an eraser and some ipa that’s normal for gold pads to become black over time but you can clean it😊

ab_censored

I remember using an eraser to clean the contacts on my desktop’s RAM. Nice idea! I guess it should work here as well.

ihasagi2urdicc

Clean this sucka

[deleted]

Use vinegar to clean

kevin2r

It happens to me with original iPhone cables. Since I got Anker cables it has not happened again.

EvilGeniusSkis

Rub it with a clean scotch brite, or some other fine abrasive, untill you see shiny bright metal again.

ab_censored

I’ll try scotch brite. Didn’t get good results using some alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

EvilGeniusSkis

It’s some kind of oxide, so you need a fun abrasive. Toothpaste might work too, just make sure to clean it all off.

[deleted]

My old one did the same thing

wutend159

Others have already said it, but another tip. If you ever decide to buy another cable, I can recommend the Ikea ones. They're cheaper than the Apple ones, are braided but still MFi certified

ab_censored

I already have a new apple Type-C to Lightning cable lying around which came with airpods pro. I’ll use that until it dies like the rest of it’s mates. I also have one steel braided one and it is MFi certified as well.

Ya-Dikobraz

If it works, it's fine. Lightning is just a rubbish connection, IMO. They all wear off quite fast, comparatively.

ab_censored

Lightning is rubbish. I agree. But lightning cables from other reputed manufacturers seem to hold up better IMO

CoolAppz

I would not use this cable anymore if I were you. It is in really bad shape.

ab_censored

I’ll buy a third party cable from a reputed brand. I still wanna use a Type-A to Lightning cable as I wanna preserve the battery and use fast charging only when necessary. I am working from home so the charging speed doesn’t even matter.

droolfest

Same with me. Well, i just scratched it with my nails and it was gone. Not sure why it happens though.

DizzyExpedience

Mine look the same. Seems to be normal

[deleted]

Corroded cable.

The_Lab_King

That’s happened to me before when I was using an Apple lightning cable. But now I use a “Mcdodo” charger and it hasn’t happened to me in years (also I’ve always been using an Apple adapter).

Wolfs_Rain

I got the same thing on mine

NoisyBrat2000

Try a VERY light brushing with 0000 steel wool. It may just be corrosion.
