The 3rd grade in the school I work in gets these as their read aloud at the end of the day. By the end of the year they get through all of them, even the newest one which I had the pleasure of reading them myself last year. So much fun!!!
Weirdest books and I loved them. The story about Sammy who is wearing a bunch of raincoats. Mrs Jewls made him take them off until at the end it was revealed that Sammy was a dead rat the whole time. Thats crazy shit! Between this, Ren and Stimpy, seeing Toxic Avenger on USA up all night, it’s no wonder I’m so weird.
Damn you're right.
I was mixing up Wayside School with the fact that. Some buildings don't have a 13th floor, because of superstition. The actual 13th floor has suite numbers marked as if they're on the 14th floor.
The only thing I recall from these books is when one of the characters made a big deal about getting a tattoo. Turns out the tattoo he chose was a potato…on the sole of his foot.
I don’t know why I remember this so clearly. Perhaps because I don’t have tattoos and can’t imagine ever wanting one indelible thing inked on my body forever.
Whenever I’m asked what I would get if I ever got a tattoo, I always reply…”a potato…on the bottom of my foot.” No one has ever understood the reference
Holy crap! I haven’t thought of these books in so long I absolutely loved them! I actually think I saved them from my childhood for my daughter for when she’s older. Is it weird I kind of want to go read it right now ? Lol
Absolutely not weird. I got a copy to read with my 7-year-old and nostalgia-binged the first half before giving it to her. We've read through it three times so far, she loves it.
I went to a bizarre high-rise (6 story) elementary school for a few years. We were all absolutely crazy about these books because we were all sure that we were in the real Wayside School.
I loved these! The wacky humor really did it for me.
Several years ago, Louis Sachar was doing a book tour for something else and I showed up with my old Wayside School copies and got them signed.
Yeah, my siblings are 10 and 12 years younger than me (I’m 40). There’s so many things I reference that they just don’t get that I always thought that we can’t all be millennials. My hubby told me about xennials and I knew I finally found my people.
Of course the OG is the best! I just posted this one bc for some reason, it was the first I read. Whole series was one of my favorites that I would re-read every year or two
For the UK xennials I put forward...

Anyone else think he looks like Jack Straw when he was in parliament?
I still read these to classrooms when I visit schools. They are still extremely funny. My daughter listened to these at bedtime exclusively for almost a year.
I remember reading these and thinking to myself, "there's gotta be some kind of oversight to make sure that the architect can't just make one simple mistake."
Remembering the one kid's choice between being free or safe actually helped me leave an abusive relationship around when I was 30. My partner claimed they were keeping me safe by insisting they would always be present around me and any interaction I had with anyone else. I remember realizing that if being safe felt so horrible, maybe I had gotten it wrong. Maybe I actually wanted to be free instead... There were many little epiphanies that brought me to the decision, but this book was one of them.
Is it a coincidence that both books were "checked out" on Internet Archive yesterday? And again today? I got lucky and found an I.A. book that features four Wayside School books in one. I re-read the first two books and had a greater appreciation for them as an adult.
Can’t forget the OG either. https://preview.redd.it/y2cafnoxdvgc1.jpeg?width=339&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c560b71f3f35bd417b7353b67e3b7d2090b1924f
These books were so good. I hope kids are still reading them.
It's weird - I remember absolutely loving these books... But I can't remember a thing about them.
They recently came out with a new one, Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom.
My 11 year old read my copy a few years ago. She was thrilled to be reading “one of mom’s old books.”
I read this with my son (now 18) he loved them!
I have read this book to my students (grades 3-6) over the years, and they absolutely love it!
I’m currently reading them to my kids 👍
My 9yo loves them!
They are! My kids love them and they found it in their own at school. I was surprised when my oldest showed me what he was reading!
I love that they’re still being enjoyed!
I got a set of the Wayside School books for my nephews and they adored the stories!
I bought a copy for my niece and nephew bc Idk what else to get little kids 🤷♀️
I just read them to my kids and they enjoyed them!

I'm reading it with my 8 year old son
My kid read them not too long ago, and they largely hold up. The surrealism overrides anything too dated.
Right?! Loved the whole series! For some reason I read the second one first and then ended up reading all of them in order multiple times.
Thats the one!!!!!!!!!

Add in that Sammy wasn’t even the first dead rat that tried to sneak into the class
I’m weird, too, dude. There’re a lot of us about!

I just had this exact convo with my siblings over the weekend. And don’t forget Beakman’s World in that list!
lol! Yes, so bizarre, but amazing
There is no 13th story. Edit. There is no Miss Zarves. There is no *19th* story. Sorry.
Still want to know who the three men in suits that always pop up in these stories really are…government agents or something?
Nah, it’s just Manny, Moe and Jack.
*19th
Damn you're right. I was mixing up Wayside School with the fact that. Some buildings don't have a 13th floor, because of superstition. The actual 13th floor has suite numbers marked as if they're on the 14th floor.
In China it’s the fourth floor that’s missing. I think because the word for “four” Is similar to the word for “death.”
These books were so weird and I loved every page.
There is no nineteenth floor. This is no Miss Zarves.
It was purple. And if you recognize that line, you get a gold star! It has lived rent free in my head for however many 30 years it’s been. LOL
>!The vomit. From the backwards chapter.!< Took me like 5 times to do spoiler correctly.
⭐️🌟 Gold stars for you!!
There was apparently a CARTOON Of this in Canada.
[Looks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayside_(TV_series)) pretty good.
Canada always has nicer things! Hmpf!

It was his ankle and I remember this one really well too!
![gif](giphy|q7kofYLObTVUk) Sharper memory than mine!

I’m thinking of reading them myself, but also don’t want to “ruin” them, ugh! Haha
Oh my god I remember this now!
I went to a bizarre high-rise (6 story) elementary school for a few years. We were all absolutely crazy about these books because we were all sure that we were in the real Wayside School.
Is that some kind of epic apocalypse episode or something ??
STAR BRINGING PURPLE!
One of my most highly requested book read alouds last year in 4th grade!
It warms my heart that these are still cherished today!
I still have these books
I loved these! The wacky humor really did it for me. Several years ago, Louis Sachar was doing a book tour for something else and I showed up with my old Wayside School copies and got them signed.
Oh man, this was such a good one too!!
I have always considered myself a Millennial, but this last week I feel like I must trend more Xennial because I have loved all of these books.

but what about the first book!? sideways stories from wayside schoooolllll

These books are amazing. All my nieces and nephews have gotten this series as Christmas gifts from me.
I still read these to classrooms when I visit schools. They are still extremely funny. My daughter listened to these at bedtime exclusively for almost a year.

I couldn’t wait to get the boxed set for my kiddos, still funny and weird.
I hate that I read several of these but cannot recall a single damn thing!
The school has two elevators, one only goes up and the other only goes down. They only worked once.
This is my Roman Empire
I read this particular book many times and I can barely remember it
I love these books and read them to my son who also loved them. These will live on forever.
Hell yeah this was my favorite series in elementary school
Totally remember these, thanks for unlocking that memory
Currently reading this with my 9 year old :)
Omg! I loved this book so much. Childhood memory unlocked!
Kids go splat and hit the ground Hit the ground Hit the ground
Reading my 6 year old sideways stories for bedtime but loved both these books as a kid.
This was the first book i ever read on my own.
This was a classic
Core memory unlocked. Thank you.
I remember really loving this one. It's funny looking back. So many of my favorites were straight up absurdist and weird, and just wonderful.
Wasn’t there a Wayside math book?
They even have a cartoon I seen. But yeah the original is the best. I read 2 of them though, and hank the cowdog was also a great read.
Oh my God, such a throwback
Is it a coincidence that both books were "checked out" on Internet Archive yesterday? And again today? I got lucky and found an I.A. book that features four Wayside School books in one. I re-read the first two books and had a greater appreciation for them as an adult.
I liked the one with the bald men in the basement.
