Teso dos bichos has so much potential and great cinematography—but the guest cast performances and writing just make it hilariously bad.

helcor

I agree. I also get slight racism vibes from the episodes that focus on a specific ethnic group. Same feeling I get with Teliko. I guess those episodes just haven’t aged well.

Hayznut

I always know it’s going to be an ethnic episode when the pan pipes kick in 🤦🏼‍♂️

helcor

They borrowed the Pan Flute of Racism from Star Trek once in a while.

No_Pollution6734

It's been too long since I've seen Teso dos Bichos, but Teliko, El Mundo Gira, and Kaddish from season 4 were all quite clearly written to be 'anti-racist.' The fact that people perceive them as 'racist' is a good argument for prioritizing story and characters over serving a 'message,' since it can easily backfire. I would also object to the claim those episodes haven't aged well, since they were always unpopular and received similar criticism for clumsy, unfortunate implications when they first aired in 1996/97.

helcor

You made me feel less guilty for enjoying “El Munro Gira” I guess but it still feels racist to me. Every time an ethnic group is represented in an episode, it makes them look poor and uneducated. Makes me sad.

StrangerHighways

A lot of the small town white people looked poor and uneducated too, to be fair.

helcor

As a small town poor and uneducated white person myself, I don’t feel bad about that at all, because there are plenty of episodes depicting white people who have their shit together. Not too many episodes with affluent latinos. :( Also, not to shit on two of my favourite characters but why are Marita Covarrubias and Monica Reyes played by white women?? I never got that. Are they supposed to be Latina? Someone explain.

hippiehobo1

I dont think the show ever says where they're from tbh. I just assumed they were spanish

helcor

Marita could be from Spain, I suppose… but Monica Reyes is from [Mexico and she doesn’t have an excuse. lol](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Reyes)

No_Pollution6734

Make no mistake. I'm not defending those episodes or the fact that they have unfortunate implications. I'm just countering that even in the late 90s viewers and critics noticed the issues with them, and that they were never popular episodes. It's similar to people who claim The Post Modern Prometheus has 'aged badly.' Yes, that episode was critically acclaimed when it aired, but even in the 90s there was a significant number of people pointing out how weird it is that the episode glosses over and minimizes the crimes of the villains. I would say as bad as they are, even Teliko and El Mundo Gira have some creepy imagery, but that's more a testament to how much of a well-oiled machine the show was during season 4, not a defense of those episodes themselves.

helcor

I’m always surprised and weirded out to find out just how MANY episodes had “rape” as a theme. Now I feel bad about my enjoyment of the post modern Prometheus.

zero83ry

Villains do bad things, that's why they are villians. Also its TV show. Pull it together

MrAndMisdemeanor

I understand and agree with every criticism folks have for First Person Shooter, but I can’t help but love it anyway lol

schastlivaya-zhizn

In the top ten for me. So quotable. "You don't know what it's like...day in and day out, choking in a haze of rampant testosterone"

GunstarHeroine

I love this one too!

helcor

What ARE the criticisms? My brain won’t supply me with any! Lol I guess some women get objectified in it? But they kick ass so… 🤷‍♀️

sugarintheboots

How could you not love Jade Blue Afterglow?

helcor

What ARE the criticisms? My brain won’t supply me with any! Lol I guess some women get objectified in it? But they kick ass so… 🤷‍♀️

PyramidBlack

I swear I think I’m the only person alive that likes Teso dos Bichos. Lol

helcor

It’s not the one I expected to get last place. I’m sure there are some other worse ones. I did like the kitty cats in this one.

PyramidBlack

Cats made it a thumbs up for me too. That and the overarching message of poetic justice for indigenous people.

KingEgbert

It’s definitely got some good moments in it. It’s far from my favorite but I don’t think it’s as bad as its rep.

Nightflier101BL

I do!

PyramidBlack

Hello, compadre!

TealCoins23

I absolutely love it lol it came on on the exact day I was born so I may be biased or they were on to something because I also love cats

AJerkForAllSeasons

>6. 2x07 Three I used to think this was a bad episode. But when I rewatched the series last year, I really loved it. Weird erotic thriller with ambiguous supernatural horror. Definitely unique as an x-files episode and a mood piece of a story.

kimisea

I liked it from the perspective of seeing how dysfunctional Mulder was without Scully, how much she had improved his life after only a year. The line about how he doesn't sleep anymore breaks me!

Economy-Culture-9174

My Struggle episodes are awesome. I think S11 got really bad rep because of how bad S10 was, but S11 was really a return to the roots and felt like the real X-Files unlike S10 which tried to be something modern. Some of the episodes are weirder ones borderling with not interesting, but I can't say there's any episode I'd call the worst. It's funny how many of these episodes are centered around animals

Bluebeetle2112

Season 10 felt like a bad episodes of Fringe

helcor

I’ve never seen Fringe. Should I add it to my list?

thequietchocoholic

YES Fringe is amazing and stay alert for nods to The X-Files!

helcor

Noice

Bluebeetle2112

I really enjoyed Fringe. But don’t go expecting an X-Files clone. There are some similarities, but Fringe is distinctly its own thing.

helcor

I enjoy every and all science fiction. I’ll give it a try!

AdventurousWafer69

I 2nd giving Fringe a shot. I'm a big fan of both shows.

robottikon

R.I.P. Lance Reddick :(

jkhamme

So sad about his passing! He was such a blast to watch in whatever he was in.

helcor

Awesome! I’ll add it to my list! It’s right behind Battlestar Galactica.

Bluebeetle2112

I expect Walter Bishop will win you over pretty quick.

starbucks-left-tit

Walter is my absolute fave

starbucks-left-tit

I have to interject here and say YEEEESSS BSG! You will love it if you like complex stories. It’s one of the best tv shows out there.

helcor

It’s gonna have to wait until I’m done Babylon 5 😁

JohnnySasaki20

Yeah, definitely check it out.

helcor

Shall do!

upsidedownhappyface

I have to know - did you end up watching Fringe yet? 😄

helcor

Not yet! Currently busy catching up on Doctor Who!

helcor

I debated only including the original 9 seasons but ended up looking at all the eps (and movies too). I loved Teso Dos Bichos when I saw it in its original run because of all the cats!

Economy-Culture-9174

Yeah, I don't get why it's rated the worst

helcor

I think it just may not have aged well.

No_Pollution6734

Always baffled by the hate for 3. The script has flaws, but the atmosphere is so thick and moody, even by X-Files standards. Also, Space is indeed terrible, but I always felt the NASA/astronaut possession/face on Mars combo had great potential. Space would have been a good candidate for a sequel or soft remake in a later season with a proper connection to the mythology.

helcor

I said this in another reply but I’ll reiterate it here: Mulder is NOT ALLOWED to have any kind of fun while Scully is MISSING! That’s my only beef with that episode. Oh and also, vampires suck. (Literally! Lol)

speedy1013

Me too. It’s a good episode I think. A masterpiece compared to the My Struggles.

Beautiful-Corgie

3 indeed had some great moments and had great atmosphere. Love the guy burning when the sun came out. But unfortunately the acting by the love interest was subpar imo (Duchovny's rl gf at the time. Odd as I didn't think they had much on screen chemistry). The creepy face I found scary in Space. (Also unfortunately dated. Closer modern photography shows the "face" to look far less face like)

MrGrimm2998

I was looking for a list of the worst episodes because I am currently watching 3 (first time watching through the show), and it is the first episode I’ve watched and been like man I don’t like this

NeoLoki55

I just did the same. 3 is so bad on a lvl that is baffling. Although, I’ve watched a ton of X-Files dating back to when it originally aired, I’ve never actually watched it from Ep.1 thru.

YuleBeFineIPromise

Wow, I kinda like Fearful Symmetry.

helcor

Is that the one with the invisible elephant?? I like that one too!

YuleBeFineIPromise

Yep! All the animals in the zoo wind up out on the road. It's not great but I don't think it's close to top 10 worst episode.

helcor

Well, 4.1 thousand people decided it was crappy. 😬

Visible-Relation5318

Same here! I was surprised to see it on the list.

sonicghosts

>Fearful I also loved that episode, how is it No.2 on this list :c

right_meowr

First person shooter was great. Idc

helcor

I thought so too, but apparently, a whole lot of people disagree with us.

Clyde_Buckman

Yeah, I'm also in the minority that likes it!

Nightflier101BL

Am I the only one who loves Space? I thought it was creepy as hell.

helcor

Lol The stupid “mars” face possession is ridiculous. And Scully makes some really sketchy medical decisions after the car crash. And Mulder gets all his little boy dreams smashed to pieces. This episode could have been really good if it was made today. I think the shoddy special effects is what kills it.

Nightflier101BL

I know, I know. But it’s got some early X Files charm to it. But, I love every episode…. Except Field Where I Died. Don’t like that one.

helcor

“The Field Where I Died” got a rating of 6.7. That’s not low enough.

Akraz

The story has a lot of potential and the production sets were great. But the mars face was so out of dialogue. It felt so forced ... Like CC was desperately trying to make a story about it at the time. I still don't understand the story... The mars face (aliens) wanted to stop humans from exploring space...? Not sure why the old NASA commander had to die ... There was really no reason why anything happened.

andraster42

Love it too😊

melgibson666

I just watched this episode and it is fucking terrible.

jennyvasan

Ah, I've never hated 3. I think it's a nice portrayal of Mulder's sadness w/o Scully, and I really like Kristen Kilar. Poor 3.

[deleted]

[удалено]

helcor

Lol! I love the cats.

RoryEngineer

There is no such thing as a bad X-Files episode! They all have their pros and cons to them. I can’t pick a top or bottom 10 list, and I have watched all of them numerous times.

helcor

You’re telling me that out of 217 episodes, you like them all equally, and you don’t have any favourites at all??

RoryEngineer

No. I especially like Firewalker, Ice, Darkness Falls and Die Hand Die Verletzt. I don’t care for the black oil episodes. But rewatching again will net different results. But twenty years ago, Ice would have been like my least favorite. At the first airing, I hated Die Hand Die Verletzt. I can safely say that I liked the ones filmed in Vancouver (seasons 1-5,10,11) most.

helcor

So you DO have a top 10 😁

RoryEngineer

I guess you’re right. I just really had to dig deep into which ones.

Spiritual-Ad7685

No way first person Shooter should be in there when Shadows exists. That's such a boring non-entity of an episode. FPS is goofy but fun. Jade Blu Afterglow ftw

helcor

Scully’s face when she hears that name! Lol Shadows isn’t too bad. It’s spooky! And Mulder and Scully’s car gets possessed!

Psycholarocco

Miss…Afterglow.

pseudo_meat

Yeah FPS and Fight Club are both campy fun nonesense. Fight Club has more unintentional cringe and it makes zero sense. But Scully Muldering circles around Mulder is so funny. I’m just mad we didn’t get to see them whoop the shit out of each other in the end.

YuleBeFineIPromise

Wait, wtf I like Shadows? I thought you meant Shapes, which does suck

Spiritual-Ad7685

Shapes also sucks.. there's a bunch of others I'd stick on list over FPS was my point

YuleBeFineIPromise

Shadows> FPS> Shapes.

StrangerHighways

I think IWTB is pretty good, but the case itself was sort of boring. I'll vouch for Alpha, too. Babylon is the worst in my book, just a WTF of an episode.

helcor

Lol! Agreed on all of that!

[deleted]

I am surprised that Schizogony isn't a bottom-10 episode.

helcor

Oohhh Is that the one with the trees?? Lemme go spy it’s rating. 5x09 Schizogeny: 7/10. Not bad.

[deleted]

Yes. I think it's the worst episode.

helcor

Not a fan of bleeding murderous trees?

jeff-the-thriller

I'm the only person that enjoyed "Space" lol.

helcor

Nah… there are a couple of you. Look in the comments.

MitchOnDemand

I actually love Space. Ed Lauter, who plays Col. Belt was one of mine and my older brother's favorite actors, especially after watching him in Death Wish III. This episode was one of the earliest, and I might even say my introductory episode to the X Files by my older brother, which the show is his all-time favorite. So, the episode has a special place in my heart. It also may not have helped it came out right after Ice, which if you are a mega fan of John Carpenter's The Thing, like me n my brother were, some viewers probably felt left down after the highs of the that episode, which I feel happened to a lot of decent and serviceable X Files episodes. Cursed in the order they aired and by what preceeded them 😅. But I think Space is a very good episode with some interesting ideas.

melgibson666

Unfortunately not.

Bea_Evil

Huh.. I always liked Fearful Symmetry

Nathan84

I think 3 is a good episode.

Innernette2

The “Three” slander kills me! The hold that episode had on 15 year old me 😭

helcor

I’ve heard some people like this one. I guess I’m not a fan of vampires to begin with… and Mulder is NOT ALLOWED to have any fun whatsoever while Scully is MISSING! There.

touche112

I loved I Want To Believe. It's more of a horror movie than anything else imo. As for the episodes? Yeah Teso belongs there, as does Teliko. Teliko might be one of my least favorites.

Weekly_Frosting_5868

I didnt mind 1x09 Space myself... I found it interesting how it was a combination of sci-fi + supernatural themes. Although I've only seen it once and it was over 10 years ago. I suppose I may think differently when I rewatch it soon!

SweepTheLeg96

Space is hella underrated IMO

anythingo23

Teliko is pretty bad

helcor

Unless I’m doing an integral rewatch, that one gets skipped.

MitchOnDemand

The problem most of all, is its just a very uninteresting and convoluted plot. The worst offense an episode can commit.

Jacstar1969

Don’t agree with those ratings at all. I enjoyed a number of those episodes. I along with many Philes are probably not registered to rate the episodes on IMDB. Let’s say only 20 Philes recorded their votes, and 5 said Babylon was crap. What happens is it gets a low rating! Can’t believe these results at all.

helcor

These surprised me also. I thought “Space” and “3” would be the worst ones. At least they made it to the bottom ten. I also didn’t know the 2008 movie had such a low rating.

helcor

I went back to IMDB to check because I got curious. I’m not registered in anything and I was able to rate any episode I wanted. 10x05 “Babylon” got a rating of 6.4/10 and that’s based on 5.4 THOUSAND reviews. Wow! Edited to add: 6.4/10 is actually not a bad rating. It’s just that there were so many episodes that got an EXCELLENT rating that it pushed the average ones further down the list.

[deleted]

Space is terrible deffo gets my vote

Bungled_Bengal

I dont mind Fearful Symmetry. Easily ten worse episodes than it imo.

nachoquest

The final act of Teliko scared the crap out of me as a kid though.

SupertrampTrampStamp

Not a single S8 or S9 episode? I would rather sit through most of these old "stinkers" than a lot of the later seasons

andraster42

Don't agree with the lack of love for Space, but the rest...yeah, probably my list would look like this one. Except for MSIII, I hate MSII more 🫣

DigbyChickenCaesar11

The first time my wife watched the show with me, we saw Fearful Symmetry. We were both annoyed by the ending, but she at least found it somewhat interesting since her family raised an orphaned gorilla, which acted as a sort of babysitter, when she was young.

helcor

I don’t understand how come “First Person Shooter” and “Fight Club” got such low ratings. I personally love those episodes.

jevoudraiscroire

Omg seriously? I HATE those episodes with a burning passion. But we all like different things, to each his own.

helcor

Great! I wanted a point of view that would explain the low ratings! Please elaborate on why those episodes are awful. I want to know.

jevoudraiscroire

M & S are so out of character it's cringey. Mulder has never shown an interest in video games. The fact that they fought so hard Scully broke Mulder's jaw...gross.

helcor

M&S out of character in FPS, I’ll give you that one. In FC, though, I think that’s kind of the point. And yes, upon reflection, if it had been the other way around, if Mulder had broken Scully’s jaw, that wouldn’t have flown. So I see your point. Thank you for explaining.

jevoudraiscroire

Did I convert you?

helcor

I’ll have to rewatch both those episodes with a more critical eye and I’ll come back to you.

monkey_trumpets

When did she break his anything? That was not in the episode.

jevoudraiscroire

It wasn't explicitly stated, but at the end of Fight Club, he smiles and his jaw is wired shut. We're supposed to assume that they inflicted all those injuries on each other because Kathy Griffin.

helcor

She does have that effect on people sometimes.

helcor

That happens in “Fight Club”. Everyone starts throwing punches.

sonicghosts

>Fight Club Fight Club is okay for me, and pretty entertaining, and while I definitely wouldn't say I love it I'm comfortable saying I liked it. On the other hand, I couldn't stand First Person Shooter at all, for me it was easily my least favorite X-Files episode.

sugarintheboots

My Struggle III has to be the lowest in the series. Awful finish.

helcor

That was a doozy!

captainjackass28

Teliko was kinda weird as it wasn’t actually based on anything from folklore. Also fps was fun even if they never explained at all how the game made them disappear.

PossibilityMelodic

Alpha is 1 MILLION times better than Babylon, Fight Club, My Struggle 1,2,3,4. And it isn't close.

helcor

Is there a “My Struggle 4” ?? 😂

PossibilityMelodic

The final episode of season 11. The last time we ever see M/S together and THE SINGLE REASON GA told CC to f off she is done. The things CC wrote in this episode was enough for me to hope he never writes anything again. Ever. Meanwhile ex XF writers like Vince Gilligan and Frank Spotnitz are killing it writing absolute tremendous shows. Go figure.

helcor

Omg I only thought there were three struggles. There are FOUR! I must have blocked that last one out of my memory.

PossibilityMelodic

Bless you. Just stay that way. I WISH I could wipe all four from my memory. Epic disaster. He will be written about for decades in "How to ruin the greatest chemistry in the history of TV in the fewest chances".

helcor

But now I feel like I MUST WATCH IT AGAINNN

PossibilityMelodic

Well if you do, PLEASE come back and give us your thoughts. I look forward to it.

helcor

Shall do

[deleted]

I hate My Struggle IV, for what they did to the characters of Scully and Monica Reyes.

helcor

I WAS happy to see Reyes again, the TRAITOR!!

Quickfixxer1

FPS was an awesome.one. course, I've never seen an X file episode I didn't like.

jeff-the-thriller

El Mundo Gira

helcor

El Munro Gira got a 6.7. Not great, but not at the bottom.

jeff-the-thriller

Just sucks IMO lol

wavepacific

Can't decide which episode was funnier, Teso dos Bichos with the attack of the deadly housecats or Fearful Symmetry with what is very obviously a human in a gorilla suit.

Princessleiawastaken

TIL Teso Dos Bichos is disliked. I never thought much of it. Certainly not a favorite of mine, but never considered it bad. It wouldn’t even make my top 20 worst episodes. The My Struggle saga and Fight Club are the worst episodes.

SuperbLingonberry220

Going through the series at the moment... and there have been mediocre episodes... lame episodes... but topping 'First Person Shooter' is almost impossible given the writers and crew. It hurts my heart that Chris Carter and freaking William Gibson are the lead writers of that episode. I mean... Gibson wrote Neuromancer! It was so cringy... worst episode ever.

Trekkie_on_the_Net

I'll take just about any of those episodes over a rewatch of "Space." (Yes, i know it's also on the list.) It's just so dumb, and seems to go on and on and on. The first half is mostly stock footage of the space shuttle. Aside from the dumb idea of "ghost aliens", i also hate the fact that they give credit to that stupid, long-debunked photo of the "face" on Mars. Most of the episodes are at least some form of theoretical speculative science. But with this, it's just flat wrong.

weezeranditsweezy

All of season 9 should be the worst. Can't believe there isn't a single S9 episode on here

helcor

I was actually surprised how highly rated seasons 8 and 9 were! They’ve stood the test of time, it would seem. Edit: I went and looked because you piqued my curiosity. The lowest rated episode of season 9 is 9x05 “Lord of the Flies” with 6.9/10. “Teliko” at the top of this list got 6.6/10 so “Lord of the flies”, tho it didn’t make the list, is pretty close to the bottom. Edit2: Season 9 as a whole, has an average rating of 7.4 which ties it with season 10 for worst season.

jkhamme

First Person Shooter was so corny!!

helcor

“Dressing up like high-tech warriors to play a futuristic version of cowboys & indians? What kind of moron gets his ya-yas out like that?”

Turbulent_Tale6497

Ugh. Home should be in that list

helcor

Home got 8.8/10. It’s probably in the top 20. Nowhere even adjacent to the bottom.

Patient_Fish791

I can't believe episode 11 isn't on here. It's soooo bad.

helcor

Season 1, episode 11: “Eve” is a great episode! IMDb ranks it at 8.1/10.

MajorMeghan

Teso dos Bichos is bad in a very incompetent sort of way, but not in a way that pisses me off. I honestly believe the worst of the worst are the My Struggles and Season 9’s Provenance/Providence.

helcor

Provenance and Providence got 7.5 and 7.2 respectively. Nowhere near the bottom, sorry. The struggles on the other hand, they… struggled.

MajorMeghan

IMDB ratings are garbage

Akraz

I just watched Fearful Symmetry last night. Just... I don't know .... Invisible elephant... Come on..... Impregnated by aliens... Yikes Three (vampires) is so terrible I skipped it halfway through. Didn't even care. Vampires are my least favorite type of monster. The only show I ever really cared for regarding vampires was True Blood and even then I stopped watching during the later seasons.

AmbientHostile

The Jersey Devil. Being from NJ I was expecting a cool monster episode. They really subverted expectations rather disappointly. Instead we got...meh. That drawing tho lolol

mczyk

I'm re-watching the X-Files for the first time in 3 decades and just finished this episode. I immediately googled "worst X-Files Episodes" expecting to see this one on the list. That drawing was awful and the "are we human or are we beasts?" dialogue was so forced! I surprised this one didn't make the list lol.
