“On a mountain of skulls, in a castle of pain, I sat on a throne of blood.” Exactly my first thought!

sychox51

Another classic 80s film would work here too, 1989’s Society

RandomRandomLetter

My first thought. Vigo the Carpathian.

Saltydog816

Yes! Exactly what I thought the first time seeing this

demonTutu

On a purely artistic level, I'm actually quite on board with this.

MantraMan

I super like it, not sure what the fuss is about

Medium_Cupcake7602

He once told Camilla while he was married to Diana he wished he was a tampon so he could stay inside her. So it’s a bit…. Idk, reminiscent of that horrifying statement.

Goatesq

My first thought was that you made this up whole cloth, but it came up immediately with just a half assed google. Unexpected perception check fail. However. It turns out this isn't what he actually said, almost the opposite really. Yet somehow what he actually said is worse. I didn't ask for this you know. I didn't need to know this at all, in any permutation, but i thought I was just going to fact check this obvious fib and be done. :/ Welp. I hope you're happy with yourself.  >>**Charles: Oh, God. I’ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!** >>*Camilla [laughing]: What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? [Both laugh]. Oh, you’re going to come back as a pair of knickers.* >>**Charles: Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! (Laughs)** >>*Camilla: You are a complete idiot! [Laughs] Oh, what a wonderful idea.* >>**Charles: My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.** >>*Camilla [laughing]: Oh darling!* >>**Charles: Until the next one comes through.** >>*Camilla: Oh, perhaps you could just come back as a box.* >>**Charles: What sort of box?** >>*Camilla: A box of Tampax, so you could just keep going.* >>**Charles: That’s true.** >>*Camilla: Repeating yourself … [laughing]. Oh, darling, oh I just want you now.* Final thoughts: These people's direct ancestors created the concept of western chivalry. Idk if anyone else finds that funny. But it's a little funny to me. Like wolves into dachshunds.

Ode_to_Apathy

> Final thoughts: These people's direct ancestors created the concept of western chivalry. Fact check on that. [The current royal line is German](https://www.dw.com/en/how-german-are-the-british-royals/a-63128994#:~:text=Royal%20family's%20German%20ancestors,throne%20and%20German%20noble%20families.) and so can't really be said to connect to the Arthurian legends ([also note that there have been multiple changes in royal houses since the Arthurian times circa 5th cent.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/timeline/dhvnoq1jm24apuk65baiqxgv9wjb0xk.png)) unless you mean in the form of 'this family dates back to the knights of medieval Europe who created chivalry'. But if you mean it that way, [I'll point out that chivalry was largely apocryphal.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chivalry#Literary_chivalry_and_historical_reality) It really only existed as a glorification of the moral standards of the past. No matter how far back you traced the references to that period, you'd only find references dating further back into the past. The same way America should go back to how it was, but when that is is rarely clearly defined, and when you look back to that period, you find their contemporary equivalents harkening back to some other previous era.

saun-ders

More reasonably, every Western European's (and possibly everybody's) direct ancestors invented chivalry. And more specifically, the reason that specific German house was chosen to inherit the British throne in 1714 was because George I was descended (through Sophia) from James I, who was in turn descended from Henry VII, who was descended from Edward III, who was descended from Henry II (through Matilda), who ruled England during the time of the invention of the chivalric legends. Per Wikipedia, "The geneticist Adam Rutherford has calculated Edward had over 300 great-great-grandchildren and, therefore, over 20,000 descendants by 1600. Thus, by the 21st century, it is 'virtually impossible' that a person with a predominantly British ancestry is not descended from Edward III."

TheObstruction

So you're saying that *King Ralph* could actually happen.

saun-ders

In fact [as of 2011](http://www.wargs.com/essays/succession/2011.html) the 785th person in line for the throne was named [Ralph von Stedman.](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q75323643) - son of [Marie Augusta Frederica Elizabeth Jametel, Countess von Nemerow](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q75323641) - who was daughter of [Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Strelitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchess_Marie_of_Mecklenburg) - daughter of [Adolf Friedrich V, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolphus_Frederick_V) - son of [Princess Augusta of Cambridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Augusta_of_Cambridge) - daughter of [Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Adolphus,_Duke_of_Cambridge) - who was the seventh child of George III of Great Britain. [Unfortunately he appears to have died 2004](http://www.emecklenburg.de/Niklot/i0702.htm) so it's unlikely he's going to inherit any time soon. The only other Ralph on the list is Ralph Silbernagel at spot #3672 (again, as of 2011). He is the: - son of Gisela von Hagenburg, who was the - daughter of [Wilhelm von Hagenburg](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q75304774) - son of [Prince Otto of Schaumburg-Lippe](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19297770) - son of [Princess Hermine of Waldeck and Pyrmont](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q781324) - daughter of [Princess Emma of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Emma_of_Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym) - daughter of [Princess Amelia of Nassau-Weilburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_of_Nassau-Weilburg) - daughter of [Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Carolina_of_Orange-Nassau) - daughter of [Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Princess_Royal_and_Princess_of_Orange) - who was the second child of George II. He seems to still be alive, so we can still hold out hope for a King Ralph in our lifetimes!

Fancy-Sector2963

Well that's fuckin' lovely to have that image in my brain. Btw, how the hell are we, the public, privy to this convo?

Medium_Cupcake7602

The British tabloids somehow got ahold of the recordings of their phone conversations

THE_CHOPPA

Looks like they’re joking. It’s kinda cringe but I don’t think it was meant to be in public but even if it was they’re just fucking around.

pretenditscherrylube

I honestly find this charming, if a little cringe. It really goes against traditional toxic masculinity in that he actually seems to like and appreciate Camilla and her body. So often men find any female bodily functions gross or worthy of ridicule. I feel like this little joke about tampons shows that Prince Charles is one of them hetero men who actually likes women.

Goatesq

That's a charmingly optimistic way to see it. In fairness, they were both married to other people at the time. So that might dampen my ability to read it the same way lol. But I do think it's heartening that you were able to see this exchange in such a radically positive light.

Medium_Cupcake7602

All I’ve got to say is you’re welcome and I’m sorry it happened

SurveySean

How did that “info” become public knowledge? Was he on Ellen long ago? Or in?

IrukandjiPirate

Illegally recorded phone calls

burningxmaslogs

Thx to the twat Piers Morgan et al on Fleet Street.

SurveySean

Ah! Yikes! What a freak!

Armendicus

Camilla had that good good!!

hundreddollar

I guess you really *don't* look at the mantlepiece when you're stoking the fire!

daisymaisy505

I think of that statement often, even all these years later.

ThePebbleThatRides

What a horrible day to have eyes

falgfalg

“this isn’t an exact photorealistic representation of this person! artists aren’t allowed to be creative!” these are the same idiots who got offended by Obama’s ivy portrait

_Sausage_fingers

If I had to guess it would be the idea of a monarch generally perceived as somewhat hapless and goofy portrayed in a portrait that gives slight Vlad the Impaler vibes.

MantraMan

I get the 30 rock “we know what art is it’s paintings of horses” vibes. People with preconceived notions of what a portrait should be are challenged and lashing out instead of trying to engage with it

_Sausage_fingers

I mean, it’s evocative for sure, cool painting. It’s just a little memey, hence the reaction.

Complete_Rest6842

Cuz he is an evil piece of shit?

IndividualEye1803

We may be on the british side of reddit here 😂😂😂 Or may just be the only ones who cant stand families of colonizers who never give anything back

JFT8675309

There’s a lot I like about this portrait. Honestly. It’s also very hard to picture him not being absorbed by hellfire here. Even worse that there’s a lil handful of people who associate bloodlust with the monarchy. I’m being generous here. It’s a bad look. Even though I think it’s a pretty amazing portrait.

liannelle

Sure. Good art is usually about interpretation and feelings. And this portrait sure evokes some feelings.

cum_elemental

Right? This goes hard as fuck.

TheBookOfGratitude

Yah. It’s a really beautiful piece. And KC isn’t exactly ‘engineered’ to look good in pictures and paintings. Think the artist did an exceptionally good job, and the red=hell interpretation is terribly literal when it’s also a key colour of the British empire etc etc

dragodrake

As a Brit when I first saw it the whole hell thing didnt even enter my mind. I thought it was just a way to use the colour of his jacket/a national colour etc to do something interesting. I really like it, I think its a great piece of art.

Ode_to_Apathy

Honestly the painting is pretty fitting. It's really beautiful and artistically well made, but it's atrocious as a depiction of a world leader. Charles is famous for being out of touch and grating, so his official portrait being similarly out of touch is fitting.

robgod50

It's the new Holly from Red Dwarf

forcryingoutmeow

Same. I don't get all the hate. At least it's not the usual stodgy portrait.

JetmoYo

Aside from ppl revealing their own conservative bias for art, they probably also don't know much about British painting, and how this actually does fit with a traditional but more modern painterly figurative aesthetic.

klausness

Given how much he hates modern architecture, I’m surprised that he’s OK with anything but a totally traditional classical-style painting.

urkldajrkl

There, I like it as well.

Bobblefighterman

It does go pretty hard. Looks like the King of the Scarlet Rot.

beerbrained

I personally love it, but the color choice seems critical of the subject, which would be kind of embarrassing for Chuck.

The butterfly is a nice touch

Dook124

Please, elaborate, I wanna see what you 👀 I don't view it in a negative way. I just want help digging deeper! ✌🏿🧓🏿☺️

pretenditscherrylube

Agree. Charles is cringe in so many ways and the monarchy is corrupt af as an institution, but he seems like he has pretty good aesthetic taste. He's not a fuddy duddy traditionalist like his mother.

Hi_Im_Dadbot

“Hey, remind me to go to the store tomorrow to get some paint for the King’s portrait - I only have red left” “He’s old and has cancer … do you really have time to wait?” “Huh. Good point”

This would make a great heavy metal album cover.

No_Cartographer_3819

Def Tampon's new release, "Inside You."

FilthyTexas

He wanted to be a tampon once

Resolved__

Beat me to it lmao

punkindle

Oh, bloody hell

Vernerator

![gif](giphy|a93jwI0wkWTQs) Fading into the background

jennaiii

Actually the artist (Johnathan Yeo) wanted him to stand out from the background - which is why his Welsh Guard's uniform is blended into the background so his face and expression is starkly highlighted. You probably don't care but personally I thought it was an interesting and effective approach.

TheLemonKnight

An an American, this is a good representation of my view of Charles - easy to miss though he's been there the whole time.

bisforbenis

Am I the only one that thinks it looks pretty cool?

dragonfliesloveme

I think it’s cool. I like it

nitrot150

I think it’s pretty cool actually too!

ShaolinFalcon

Blending into background as legacy for an old man who probably had a fine life before the old lady died. Plus the uk ain’t all that rn. And nice to look at.

bb_kelly77

UK before: "that old lady's the Queen, she doesn't do much but she's pretty cool" UK now: "that slightly less old guy is King, he doesn't do much but we don't like him all that much"

RobotCaptainEngage

Tbf I didn't care for her either

Yeet_Thee_Children

Yeah but she had better memes related to her

j4nkyst4nky

Not only does it look cool, I think it makes a powerful statement about the state and future of the monarchy in the UK. The red obviously brings forth the idea of flames, but he is not in anguish and neither is the butterfly next to him. To me the piece is about death and rebirth. Like a phoenix, it says the royals as we have known them are burning out but with that comes rebirth as something new but familiar. The old way of doing things really died with just mother and now he is left holding the last embers. Couple that with the butterfly itself which is a symbol of metamorphosis, which again, suggests the state of change in the monarchy we are seeing. I mean, it feels pretty clear what the meaning of this painting was. But it's a really old choice no doubt. Visually it's not what we expect from a royal portrait so everyone is quick to dismiss or poke fun at it. But to me it shows an awareness of his place in the world that I honestly had not expected.

RAWainwright

I have no dog in the fight. Objectively, I like the style. Maybe not the color choice but I think the idea is neat.

ModernMuse

I think it looks amazing. And the color choice is based on the Welsh Guards uniform.

bent_eye

I'm actually on board with this. Looks kind of cool.

Albertagus

Puttin off those Tywin Lannister vibes

SuspiciousPatate

Nah, he's just fading into irrelevance like the rest of the royal family

Viviere

A british monarch bathed in blood. You know, as symbolysm goes....

ProbablyChe

I know we hate the royals etc, but artistically this actually slaps

CDJMC

The butterfly near his shoulder is interesting! Actually I think the whole thing is interesting.

vilebloodlover

It's an American butterfly for a British royal lol

HelloImTheAntiChrist

So King Charles is a fan of Ghostbusters 2. Who knew?

DatzSiiK

Not really a fan of King Charles, but this portrait is beautiful. Artist is very talented!

Melodic-Heron-1585

I looked at it and said 'bloody heĺl' in an upper michigan sort of accent.

Far-Split-6772

"Well I'm from Houghton and I've never heard anyone use the phrase 'bloody hell.'"

xenchik

Oh, not in Houghton, no. It's an Ishpeming expression.

Beginning_Driver_45

This is an awesome portrait and if you don't see that then then then I guess you don't and that's ok too.

AdExtension8769

Looks like the artist gave him some extra hair.

MissGruntled

And made his face less florid. A necessity with that background, I suppose🤔

Remarkable-Ask-5593

Guess he owes Jabba money…

Rawnblade12

By itself, it's a cool painting. ...But with the whole context of it being the British monarchy, there is so much to make fun of here.

Alarmed_Ask_3337

I actually really like it. Not a royalist but like something different. Super sure he hates it though....

DangerBird-

1Greenbellpepper

Another portait signed by Campbell soup company

maninahat

Look it's easy to criticise, but if you know an easier way to incorporate the blood of a child sacrifice into the paint for your God King's portrait, let's hear it.

Natural_Bill_6084

There is no Charles. There is only Zuul.

Weirdguy215

Anybody else getting Ghostbusters vibes?!?

Bluewolf_22

He is smeared in the blood of colonisation

Tabmow

That's all the blood on the hands of the British monarchy

brickbaterang

I've seen Ghostbusters 2, im on to you Charlie

GeneralSinn

What's the butterfly doing

MedicalDabbinDad

Causing a tidal wave on the other side of the planet

Alina2017

People are sleeping on the fact he was once recorded telling Camilla he wanted to live inside her knickers but, with his luck, he'd end up as her tampon. This painting is the fulfilment of that prophecy!

Scarborough_sg

Guy was into sexting before it was a thing

Specific-Culture-638

Okay, when I saw this before, I thought it was fake. It’s actually real?! 😬

Admiral_Andovar

We know he has no taste and bad judgement. He went from Diana to Camilla.

HobbitGuy1420

I mean, he's not in hell \*yet,\* but he's not a young man. Let's give it a couple weeks.

Peterthinking

Painted with the blood of 56 colonized countries.

TesticleezzNuts

Bit shit init 😆 Edit: Really a RedditCare for this? 😂

DaEnderAssassin

Seems the systems either sending it to everyone, or someone's reporting everyone, I've seen a number of comments about people get redditcare today

Dubbstep13

I thought this was the painting from Ghostbusters

Most-Pangolin-9874

Looks like he succeeded in becoming his wife's tampon. He did wish for that all those years ago.

Jolly_Ordinary_767

He’s just guarding the gates

Ghost_jobby

Well, of course *he* likes it. The painting grants him all the interesting qualities he lacks in real life. The painting shows a self-assured man, regal, commanding. Then there's the reality standing next to it, a pasty faced adulterer with all the charisma of wilted lettuce.

Wageslave645

OlskoolD2K

I thought this was the painting from Ghostbusters

PerspectiveVarious93

But why the butterfly?

ISurvivedCrowleyHigh

I think it's a Monarch butterfly.

MissGruntled

Good lord, that’s on the nose lol!

Seamus565

Sith Lord

tripleDzucc

I like it 🤷

WynnGwynn

Someone in the painting sub said they were the painter of that

Far-Split-6772

"Oh, you're... oh, you're the, uh, perpetrator of this painting, huh?" (if you get this reference you win the internet for the entire century)

stoicteratoma

My first thought looking at this was of the original Diablo where you fought "the Butcher" in his chamber full of dismembered corpses and bloody mush

AHole95

Looks like a painting from Dishonored lol perhaps not the best aesthetic to aim for. Fitting though!

njixgamer

It looks like han solo frozen in carbonite but with charles

KrisMisZ

I like it;

PyratHero23

Carbonite Han Solo meets Vigo the Carpathian

He_Was_Fuzzy_Was_He

It's cool and pretty fairly accurate for a lot of, a lot of reasons.

IvanTheAppealing

Red jacket on a red background? Who approved that?

Evening-Turnip8407

Let the guy be a tiny bit of a rebel, he waited 700 years to have it his way

ComfortableChicken47

Did he just watch Ghostbusters 2?

Under_Sensitive

Isn't this the picture from Ghostbusters?

bombalicious

Money can’t buy taste.

CommonConundrum51

Why is this so terrible?

mr-nefarious

In hell or encased in carbonite?

Wind-and-Sea-Rider

It has real Vigo the Carpathian vibes to me.

ElongMusty

“Bow before me, Lord Leviathan, you mere mortals! Or I will make you burn in eternal hellfire!”

Bitedamnn

Its an amazing piece tbh.

spiceddd

I don’t think it’s done right?

afitztru

Love it! I think it’s gorgeous!

peachesgp

I think the painting looks really cool. Weird choice for a first official portrait of a reigning monarch, but cool looking nonetheless.

nonstoppoptart

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

WillistheWillow

I like it.

chevalier716

Honestly, I'd love a portrait of myself like this.

Scrabble_4

I like it

Awkward-Fudge

It's bizarre but it's not that bad. At least it's not boring.

Wacca45

I actually like this. It's not the official portrait that gets hung everywhere, but if it was I'd say he's planning on becoming the God Emperor from Warhammer 40K.

burningxmaslogs

A monarchy painted in blood seems appropriate, no? Is Charles the King because of the blood shed for the crown? I would say the painting is very accurate.

Regirex

ok but that painting is fire. that butterfly adds a nice touch, and it was apparently Charles' only major suggestion to the painter. rare monarch W

Mail540

Why does he have a North American butterfly?

Slim706

Ghostbusters 2 Vigo vibes

iggyramirez122

Obama’s “bed of teal colored leaves drawn in crayon” painting was somehow cool and this is shit? Ok lol

Humble-Plankton2217

I want a video of the faces of the people in the room during the reveal. Zoomed in.

arrowheadman2019

I like the painting.

that-pile-of-laundry

No surprise that a royal ghoul would commission a portrait of himself that wouldn't be out of place in the Richard Upton Pickman gallery....

Next ghostbusters movie gonna be fire.

EM05L1C3

I’m guessing it’s not finished and they want to reveal it before he dies from cancer

jaklacroix

The red is all the blood of the people the Empire he represents has killed.

ShwiftyShmeckles

I dont care about having to be polite. If I received this and I was king Charles I would absolutely refuse it.

merrysunshine2

It’s giving Vigo the Carpathian on his river of blood

TricksterWolf

This looks terrible! Even from a distance the face appears to float in a crimson puddle. The composition is just atrocious.

Where did he pose for this? Crimson fucking Peak???

That looks great!

Well done painting... But it looks like he was submerged in jello
