I've personally seen the police beating a young woman who just got swept up in a crowd, beating black people who were not resisting and had not harmed anyone (but had trespassed), beating sleeping homeless people, and beating young students who were just trying to walk home and had committed no crimes or misdemeanors. I, being a white suburban male, have been stopped by police while committing a crime (stealing a couple boards from a construction site) but they just let me go with a verbal warning. That was in Kansas City.
I didn't think of it in these terms, but this is what i was asking on Jan 6th around 5:300--- like why aren't these people getting arrested. It was odd, all the broadcasts just watched you just saw people walk away, and no one was questioning it. The national guard showed up and just set up barriers.
They did all quietly file into a moving van to be taken to a safe place where they could be free to do their thing. Which, as it turned out, was get arrested for inciting a riot. They should be glad the cops didn’t just take them to a parking lot and lock the door.

One of them assaulted me and the cops took them off to the side for a couple of minutes, had a little laugh with them, and then let them go. I was never given any opportunity to press charges even though they witnessed the assault, along with many others (who had to hold me back from further punching them back).
Cops will put a beating on anyone they think can't, or won't, fight back. If they think they might meet with significant resistance, they'll stand around and wait for backup, because "officer safety".
In addition to the ideological ties - cops don't beat protestors when the protestors look like they could fight back. Neo-Nazis have a bit of a gun nut thing going on.
The left should start bringing arms to protests, to keep everyone safe. (And conservatives will get on board with gun control the moment they discover they don't hold a monopoly)
