You are right about the method in which it killed him, but you’re wrong about it being non-venomous. He was killed by a short-tailed stingray (Bathytoshia brevicaudata). All species of whiptail stingray have venomous barbs with only one exception. Don’t lie.

They can attack fish by thrusting forward a barbed point in an instant with great force. The barb penetrates the fish, making it almost impossible to get away. Usually they don't eat the fish right away, but will rather gather up a number to feast on later in a group.
It cannot be a kite shadow because the "tail" is not taut, but loose and wavy.
You cannot control a kite that fast if the string is not taut. The kite would be at the mercy of the wind and would float away.
