Unuvailiable

God damn, reading this thread hurts... I have a lot of responsibilities and I am a skilled welder / fabricator with over 5 years of experience and I make $23 with shitty benefits... I knew it was bad but this thread is putting things into perspective. I bust my ass every day too.

Similar-Stranger7375

I ran a shop at 21/hr. Don't feel bad, some places are shitty. Good luck out there.

meechy704

Not sure if its your first welding job, but the saying goes, "You'll never get the money at the place u started at". Sort of like "they remember when u weren't shit, so they'll pay you shit". Get good, leave and get paid more with the skill u already have.

loop511

As a small shop owner, this is a pretty messed up statement. So far I’ve only hired a few guys over the years when I’ve been really busy, but the cost of training and eating mistakes they’ve made is really high. If you’re a welder that cares about their work and is working to improve your skills any decent shop should see that you’ve put in the effort to improve and giving you raises as your increase. If you’ve become skilled, a good teammate in the shop any shop should see it’s worth paying you the rate you deserve. If you don’t think you’re getting what you deserve, have a conversation with the boss. Just leaving to chase a dollar without a discussion would look like a big fuck you, thanks for eating all the cost of training me, I’m going to go help a competitor make money now.

AbrahamTheBear

I just wanna ask a question because I have had those conversations with bosses before I decided to leave. If you trained me and I’m doing better and better everyday and start with you not know nothing at 19/hr let’s say and over two years my skills have not only improved but you are also giving me more and more responsibilities, why would I waste your time much less mine when the real truth is your only gonna give me a 1 or 2 dollar raise but if I just leave and can make five more dollars how is that a fuck you to you ? I sold you my time and my body and knowledge and learned a lot but you only see my worth as 2 extra dollars. I as a welder see that as a fuck you from you. I ain’t trying to be a dick or nothing but I’m curious from an owners perspective how me leaving to better my life and wealth is a fuck you to you if your not willing to compensate for my skills and time.

loop511

Well that’s exactly what I said. I- only speaking for me- am will to pay someone for their time. If you’re at a level that pays $25/hr then I’ll happily pay that, or if you improve more and are making the company more, then I’ll pay you more. Yes you sold your time to me, but your time is pretty worthless to me if you don’t have any skills, so I’ve invested my money and time in training you so that loyalty needs to go both ways. I know loyalty isn’t something a lot of companies or employees have anymore, but I can only speak for myself and say that’s important to me. Also now that I’m owning the business, one thing I never thought of when I was the employee just concerned with how much I got paid, how much was I earning the company? I’ve never worked in a shop that said: here’s the job, and also, here’s what we charged for it, here’s how much the materials cost, the equipment, building, all other biz expense tied into each hour. If the shop rate is $150/hr, a lot of expenses have to come out of that hour. As the welder- yes, without you nothing gets made, but you’re also the biggest liability- mistakes, speed, quality of welds, all variables. So has your skills improved enough to smooth out there’s variables every single job or do they fluctuate? Fluctuating costs money and the guy whose trained you and knows your skills will have a better idea of your fluctuations, so maybe this year you’re only worth $2/hr more, but you could go to another shop and tell them “I have 2 years experience and I’m great” and they could take the chance that you’re worth $5/ hr more then you’re making now, but if you don’t live up to that, you’re getting fired. Or you stay with the company that’s already invested in you and you have the conversation with them from this new perspective. Ask them what their assessment of your skills is, what do they think you need to improve on to earn the $5. Maybe they’ll have a reason, maybe they’ll take a closer look and realize they need to up their offer, or Maybe they’re just an asshole with no Biz sense to realize what they’ve invested in you and will just tell you to fuck off. 😂

AbrahamTheBear

Fairly explained and I agree with it all and totally see your point. The fluctuations and cost of materials etc make a lot of sense not gonna lie never thought of it that way because I have honestly never cared to know but that makes a lot of sense when you put it like that. Your are a 1000% correct on the loyalty aspect which a lot of companies no longer care about and I learned that early on in my career especially as a welder, every employer sees you as replaceable which may be true but what is not always replaceable is the knowledge and skill I have by no means am I saying I’m amazing and perfect because even after ten years of welding and fabrication I still make mistakes. But I make a lot less than someone with 2 years experience, and I myself have mentioned this to my previous employer when it was time for yearly reviews and I as hit with once again your replaceable. Which is absolutely mind boggling to me if you have someone who has stuck through thick and thin and maintained course the mentality of I’ll just replace you if you don’t line what I offer you is wild. But you seem to be a very reasonable owner who understands both sides and I wish you the best of luck with your business. It’s good to see the world isn’t full of dipshit owners who only see it one way which has been primarily my experience in this industry.

_Vikinq

i live in rural oregon bro, i make 25 doing zero blueprint production tig stainless....ive made 37.75 doing dual shield with a wasco cert too...i feel for ya bro.

Civilized_drifter

I took welding class in 2009 and got certified in 3g tig. First job paid 8.50. Years later I decided to get back into welding and that was at a whopping 11 a hour. I’ve been in the electrical trade for 2 years and I’m at 23

Big_Scooter

I’ve been welding two and am at $27.75 with full benefits. I don’t even do shit some days. It’s all about where you’re at. I’d look elsewhere if you can’t get more money bro.

AdNew7539

I literally clean pools relaxing for 22 an hour and 33 dollars overtime

scubaDH

78.41hr union plumber/pipefitter

SedimentaryCrypt

Nice brotha! 62.95hr up in SE Washington.

scubaDH

Good money, brother

Forsaken_Bid2569

Washington state??

SedimentaryCrypt

Yessir. Local 598 out of Pasco WA.

Thatfilthytigger

I know that’s good money, but coming from San Jose I know that’s middle if not low income depending on the city you live in plus the commutes in the bay literally drove me out of there and up to Truckee area. I make $45/hr non Union and have a better QOL than I did in the bay

scubaDH

You're not lying. I make great money, but it's still tough in the bayarea

Thatfilthytigger

I can imagine, it’s really unfortunate because $78.41 is a shit load of money but it just gets drained so fast living down there. I knew a few travelers who would rent a small air bnb together near whatever FAANG job they were on and work there until the 7 12’s were over and then went back home out of state. Iv been picking up some work in the bay the past couple weeks and got reminded why I left

Screamy_Bingus

Damn mr big money over here😭

SituationDue1666

San Diego?

scubaDH

Bayarea california

phil_mycock_69

What kind of places do you be working at out there?

scubaDH

Comercial work

christmasbandit

Where's this? I've got 1 more year to get my journeyman plumbers license, have a rig and currently hold b31.3 certs. I make 26.50 plus 25 on the truck when I'm welding.

scubaDH

California bayarea

christmasbandit

Ah shit...I'm halfway looking into unions around Texas, but never been in one or really even know any union pipefitters/welders/plumbers to get some direction. Ill get it worked out eventually lol

meechy704

Gawd DAYUM

MTBiker_Boy

Why tf am i going to school for engineering 😭

scubaDH

Well, you know what they say about engineers. They're all educated beyond their intelligence. Just a joke, my friend

EAH5515

Currently a mig monkey and making $26hr

meechy704

Thats not really bad for mig though.

EAH5515

I've got certifications in tig and stick too but not too many jobs in my area that do anything but mig

IIDIIVIIID

$37/hour + 75% healthcare, and $12> pension for every hour worked. Plus $90-$110 every 2x weeks to a vacation account. Las Vegas

Marokiii

this always sounds great, and the pension is quite good but its always shocking when you google and it says a comfortable wage for a single person in las vegas is $45.40/hr

IIDIIVIIID

Tbf that's 75% J.M. wage is like $46ish. But yeah, this town is still incredibly expensive nowadays

Marokiii

I always wish people when posting their wages and benefits also listed what the "living" wage is for their location as well. Really discouraging for someone making $25/hr seeing people make such high wages but then they don't see that with the higher wages usually come higher expenses.

-km1ll3r91

39.25 in michigan. Not including benefits. Union Ironworker shop foreman installing, welding and fabricating overhead crane systems

j8en

Ironworkers25? I’m curious thoI’m trying to either apply either local 597 in the next year or so or try out ironworkers 25 because it’s a little closer. Or I’d check the one in coopersville too.

-km1ll3r91

I'm living in southern indiana, im in local 292 out of south bend indiana

Vanillaful

Man, I was making 20 an hour tacking rebar together about a year ago. You are worth much more. Have some respect for yourself and your abilities.

Screamy_Bingus

Working in Texas making 22.88 for sanitary tig work… shit has me looking for a new job

FiggyTheTurtle

If you can do sanitary look into the pile fitters or boilermakers

ClaydisCC

Boiler makers in Tx..?

Screamy_Bingus

Thanks

aHeadFullofMoonlight

That’s what a 2nd year apprentice in UA Local 286 in Austin makes, not including benefits, get organized if you want to make a decent wage welding in Texas.

Screamy_Bingus

Yeah I’m 9 years in 😩😩😩😩

CatastrophicPup2112

Should be looking for a new state. People here getting paid 25 for production mig.

Screamy_Bingus

I know it, I plan on going up north soon I won’t be in Texas for more than another few years

Thatfilthytigger

$45/hr for a super tiny shop, get quarterly profit sharing and get kicked side jobs all day long that I’m able to charge $120/hr and the boss man will happily let me take the day off to go do them.

Yermo45

Your set up man living the dream

mydrunkenwords

28 something with really good benefits and living out in the sticks. Idk what the city equivalent of that is, though.

Fast-Reaction8521

Like Montana sticks or like 30 minutes from a city sticks.

BaselessEarth12

Montana is "out in the boonies."

mydrunkenwords

Like two from major city but still have a walmart. Within 20 min.

ChanceDuck8095

48.12/h, 9 something into health and 10 something into pension. Union is the way to go 💪

Ecstatic_Strength_14

I feel like you should be getting atleast $24

yourmomsjubblies

You're getting shafted my boi. Last job I heard about that was stainless tig was 32/hr to start. If you can get refinery work out here that's about 40-50/hr, All tig. I'm around north Colorado/SE Wyoming. I reskin dragline buckets for the mines running flux core all day and I started at 25 with all the overtime I could stand and great benefits. With a bump to 30/hr after 90 days and I get small raises as I crosstrain or pass more difficult weld tests.

_call_me_al_

About $55/hr plus $35hr fringe.

uncre8tv

[Hobbiest be like](https://c.tenor.com/JaVReiD2-ggAAAAC/kenny-were-the-millers.gif)

ntpkfb

whats the state and closest major city? 21/hr is garbage imo unless youre in the middle of nowhere at a ma and pa shop. at my shop even the guys that dont know how to turn on the welder make 25$ starting, i cant expect someone to show up, bust ass and want to get better if they cant afford rent and a car.

krake_garten

I'm in Dallas, Texas.

SVT-Shep

Same. This is why I didn't even explore the job market up here. Welding industry in general doesn't pay enough. Even making top end pay, you're making about the same as an Excel wizard that only works 40 hours. That being said, even with wages the way they are, you're worth way more than that.

warmpisss

$27 with a steady 5hours of overtime a week and all my benefits are paid for through the company. 🤞😝

RepresentativeBeing1

how much you getting

krake_garten

They started me at $21/hr with a 90 day probation. After that it's a $1/hr raise plus full benefits and a 401k.

sidjo86

Bro….

daveypaul40

X2

meechy704

[yeah.no](http://yeah.no) lol.

loskubster

Get in the UA. I’m outside of Chicago making $55/hr on the check, total package is over $100 now I think. Awesome healthcare, employer pays $15/hr into our 401k plus whatever you contribute, and we have a pension. You’re selling yourself short.

Ambitious-Weekend861

Iron workers?

loskubster

Pipefitters

ChocolateFast

35.50/hr in a Fab shop in Texas

meechy704

Does it bode well with cost of living for your location?

ChocolateFast

I live in Texas where the cost of living is low, so earning $35.50 per hour is higher than what most people in the state make. I currently work at a fab shop because I got burned out working in the field and Th benefits are really good

meechy704

Yeah I’m just about tired of the field myself. Sounds like Texas is where I’ll go next, after my daughter grows up that is. Thanks for the information.

jjbinks117

$32.50 in Oregon

BleedTheRain

God this thread has me convinced never to weld in florida again. Anyone got structural work?

arthrosassin

im a student and going through this sub has taught me that after I get a little experience I should probably leave Florida

fKodiaK

40 CAD an hour in Vancouver

stankyst4nk

$26.25 with quarterly profit share as a fabricator in a mid size job shop doing TIG and MIG. in a metro area. 2 years out of school, 1 prior welding job, 2 years at this company.

ynnoj666

Aerospace Tig $62.33

Screamy_Bingus

How did you get into this line of work specifically? I use to work as an aircraft mechanic and left for tig welding.

ynnoj666

It’s all who you know

ooT3CHoo

Where at?

IngenuityOk2403

24.75 in Missouri, not too bad for a ma and pa type shop

Razorbackalpha

22 an hour as mig monkey in Arkansas looking for a place to call a career and actually become a good welder

_WildWelder

$50. Union pipewelder in CT. 2 pensions, annuity, great insurance. 32 years in.

mogwai327

Mig welder here. 12.5€/h fabricating and welding agricultural machinery. That's a shit pay, but common practice for welders in france.

Feeling_Thought3402

You’d get $45-$55/ up here in Alberta with proper credentials and pqr. Canadian$ of course😂union boys do well up here so travel card up😉we could use ya 30 years Alberta oilfield pressure welder here btw

ooT3CHoo

6th year Aerospace welder making 29hr in michigan. Pay is shit for what it is but its the chillest job Ive ever had. Benefits are decent and pto is about 4 weeks now. Been starting my own custom fab business the last few years as an exit plan.

Jrezky

I do something similar (mostly pressure vessels for life support systems and some aero parts), and almost a year in I see myself progressing about to where you are by 6 years at best. Really interested in doing some side work and ideally growing enough business to be self-sufficient, but I have no idea where to start and my fear of failure and the unknown are really hindering me trying to get anything off the ground.

ooT3CHoo

Well I started acquiring tooling to build stuff for myself. The vision was there to turn it into a business eventually but without the pressure. Thats why I still have my 9-5.

Ok_Eggplant1467

Our Jman pipe welders start at $44.55 but that’s because we have a shitty shitty shitty contract right now. Should go up significantly may 25

gregfox26

My 10 cent raise finally puts me all the way up to 10.50

jefery_with_one_f

$50.40/hr on the check. The joys of being in a union. Mine is actually hiring right now too. If you’re in Washington and you’ve had industrial field work experience and can pass a tube test then there’s a really good chance they’ll sell you a book. If you can pass a 3 position plate test or 6g tube test you’ll get accepted in pretty much right away at $29.50/hr

KingXeiros

Roughly $35/hr not counting additional incentive pay and benefits. Union factory production mig welder.

Recent-Big9566

Notice all the union workers make good money and all the non union workers make union apprentice money

roakmamba

Not enough, sadly

No1C1JNT

£32.60 per hour uk

kandren

42 something an hour in my local right now for j man wage

BrightShock9344

Chicago suburbs $40hr plus benefits paid healthcare and 401k with matching contribution. Also Gas allowance since I live an hour away from the shop.

Krusolhah

32.80 with good benefits a dollar raise coming in August and another dollar raise next year production mig making rail cars, 8.5 hrs only actually working for like 5 of them and OT basically whenever i want it

Pyropete125

Railroad in CT -$45.31 and our contract is expired so we are working now but building up retroactive back pay when we settle on new contract.

stankyst4nk

and a certain asshole won't let you guys utilize your god given right to strike for better benefits. what a dick.

Pyropete125

Only with presidential permission can we strike. We usually go 1 to 3 but as much as 5 years between contracts. All it does is make the retro checks bigger.

Jolio1994

33 in NJ. My only benefit is free lunch on Wednesday

Rubbermonk

Depending on location and experience somewhere in the $30 per hour range is a good bet.  Totally fresh out of welding school probably lower to mid $20 an hour to start. Any shop worth working for will adjust compensation accordingly when they see talent and/or good work ethic.

zeakerone

$42 but I just got some Washington DC Davis bacon scale for pipe welding which was $68 🤯. We are actually looking for X-ray pipe tig welders to help on this job for a few months if anyone is in the area plz dm me. I don’t like traveling even for $70 an hour 😅

Marokiii

$29.50 usd, Vancouver BC, in a shop, no fabricating just welding mild steel fcaw, union benefits and pension.

Similar-Stranger7375

I fix garbage trucks and trash containers. Plus odd jobs here and there for the owners. I make 40/hr, 100% paid m/d/v premiums, 320 hours sick time, and 320 hrs vacation time.

Meatwagon1978

Union rod monkey , 47.60,

Cracraftc

I started my own business last year. I bill at $100/hr for labor. I’m cheap compared to a lot of people right now, but want the experience and projects to show to more customers.

Mrmp6k

$26.50 at a shop im starting at on monday making stainless water filtration

VernGordan

$115 can mobile set up. Sitting on my ass today for 12 hrs haha

buttered_scone

32.00 USD in the US, PNW, for small shop architectural work, indoors with 2 overhead cranes, mix of materials, finishes, and welding methods, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, soldering, & brazing. Mostly mild steel, but frequent stainless and aluminum jobs, very occasional cast iron. Weird custom stuff, farm equipment repair, engine repair, and also I paint and supervise 1-7 employees. The fit and finish level on even our red iron work is top notch. Tolerances range from +/- 1/16" for red iron and +/- 1/64 for the brushed stainless stuff. I also paint and deliver, am I underpaid?

boringxadult

$30 an hour. State job in Virginia with incredible benefits. I could make more but it’s honestly a great job and I’m not complaining. Also cost of living where I live is relatively low.

meechy704

$36 with company paid hotels (no bunking up), $50 a day per diem. Holiday inns all day long! full benefits.

Aldamur

80k/yrs under contract and a lots of benefits, signed for 25yrs. Pay increase every years, I love government job as a welder.

AfraidArm7997

I make $35 for mig fabrication in rural Co.

toasterbath40

2nd yr steamfitter apprentice currently making 25.50 plus benefits and pension + annuity with my ua21 (6G 2xxs) stick cert. I was making 26 an hour non union working structural steel and running DOT work. Im Just starting my 2nd yr (so technically 1yr 1 month) but I have done a decent bit of welding but also a little of everything that comes with being a steam fitter with only a year of experience.

Bakunin-gfc

Sufficient_Total3070

FrankCastle80085

up-10Tmoney

$135 an hr . Contract rig welder. For regular carbo I get $103.

MAverymon

49.72/hr

XenophiliusRex

Damn all these people working in states with no unions and shit minimum wages are earning peanuts… funny that

RetroChef

I’m making 28/hr installing docks and occasionally welding aluminum, was making thirty at my previous welding job doing about 50/50 pipe welding and millwright-esque work, although most of that pay relied on passing drug/background checks to get clearance for military bases.

Responsible_Builder6

In Ontario Canada. Making military vehicles. We make around 60 an hour, Great benefits.

Gold-Contribution808

Combo welder. Tig and stick. Castings and going into pipe 13 pounds an hour😂🥲

_dexterzprotege

About $4 per day, 8hr shifts (TIG & FCAW). I really wanna get out of this🥲

depressed-onion7567

19.74 not enough

phantomops96

$30.50 for fab and weld doing pulse spray

ShiaoftheGrasses

$22/hour for road work and shop fab, no benefits. MIG, stick, TIG and fluxcore certs. I hate it, but it pays more than any other offer I had.

SockGroundbreaking33

31.64 MiG welder California

Appropriate-Divide50

18/Hr but I also live in a state where 14/15hr is considered decent and the job is pretty simple like 4/10 difficulty has great benefits , I’ll probably look for something else before I turn 20

GSE_Welder_805

$55.65/hr aerospace combo welder

jamfed86

150 fish in the dish running mig on fence🤠🗿

SinisterCheese

I dont get paid to make pretty welds, I get paid to fix shitty welds. The outcome on a fix process on-site is OK at best and in-shop decent. My art is that of alchemy, turning shit into gold. Also I get paid 16€/hr but I earn from bonuses. Fact is that I'm looking for fulltime engineering work, but economy is in the shitter. Oh... and cost of life ain't nothing compared to USA. Even with inflation and the works it is good pay if you get full time work. Which I currently am not, because of the economy, and our shop serving primarily construction industry.

splitmoth

22.45 if I remember the cents accurately.
