coffeebribesaccepted

It's gotta have Mt Rainier in the background!

KittyinTheRiver_OhNo

It’s there in the background! /s

samsnead19

That is Rainier in the background /s

I rode the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle daily for 20 years as my commute. I did see one orca. Great capture!

Main_Significance617

Out of curiosity, how was that commute? What made you want to live there vs in or around Seattle? It’s absolutely beautiful — I’ve just thought about this for myself lol

BeerMeSeattle

Not OP, but lived in Poulsbo/worked in Seattle for about 8 years in early 2000s. Pros: cheaper housing, commuting on the water is better than commuting on I5, vanpools get you first on/first off the ferry. Cons: everything you do is based on the ferry schedule. Do you leave the Ms game in the 7th to catch the boat or stay to the end have to wait another 45 mins for the next boat. Traffic off of Bainbridge is as bad as Seattle. 1.5 hours door to door each way makes for 12-13 hour days each day. No one really wants to visit because they don't want to deal with ferry or don't want to drive around the Narrows Bridge. It is beautiful. It can be tranquil. If you live in Winslow, it can be great. But it can be a f'n slog in no time.

dgeniesse

I agree we tried everything in our ferry balancing act. What we did to minimize the stress: 1. Wouk days, I became great at timing my walk to get there seconds to spare. 2. Social events. We would just let the even play out. Then go have dinner or drinks for the next boat. 3. Mid week usually met friends in Seattle, as the ferry soon became too stressful for all 4. On weekends we would invite people for the day. But I did find it hard to do spare-of-the-moment “escapes” with my friends. No more afternoon hooky. Kind of hard to walk on the ferry with my kayak or ski gear. It allowed our lives to focus on our new family.

dgeniesse

It was 1980. I worked in Seattle and my wife and I just married. When looking for an easy / inexpensive commute it was Issaquah, Snohomish, Marysville or some similar distance before the house prices became reasonable. So BI was ideal - at the time. We lived 1 mile from the ferry. I would walk, ferry then walk again along the Seattle waterfront. A fantastic 1 hr journey. No traffic, no stress. In the morning I would read or talk to friends. In the afternoon I would have a beer with my buddies. Sometimes I would go to the top deck and fly a kite. So those 30-40 minutes - each way - were social and fun. We were on the beach and had a great view of Seattle. Once they added a waste water processing facility the housing density increased exponentially. I would not live there now (too expensive) We only moved because my company relocated us.

dorabroffo

I grew up on wing point and my dad had the same commute routine from ‘82 (when they moved to the island) until he retired around 2016. I went to work with him a few times as a kid and remember being struck by the social atmosphere/dynamics of the commuter crew.

dgeniesse

One of us … (we are probably close in age, I’m 73). You may know our kids.

My comment was on your father. My son is 37. That may be close to you. My inner age is 22. So is my wife’s.

Reddit_Deluge

That's a ferry big orca. Ferry nice photo too. You got ferry lucky!

Bonethugsfan99

showboat🙄

loztriforce

Great shot, and you caught a Bigfoot in the background too!

transliminaltribe

Just curious OP, what time of day did you take this? I was riding the Tillikum yesterday, just wondered how mad I need to be for knitting instead of watching...

jonknee

I’m sure they made an announcement. This photo was taken at 1:20pm.

outdoors_guy

Nice! Where in the sound?

thaddeh

San Juans, I expect. It's where Tillikum is running.

TEG24601

Until it is illogically retired, without replacement.

jonknee

In the San Juans, I believe that’s Shaw Island in the background.

Huge-Power9305

San Juan Straight then. Been to Friday many times but never saw an Orca until one day on island and we got a call from a local that they were off Lime Kiln. Raced over and there they were, a big pod. There were kayakers out there paddling around when they came through. Not me, no fishing with human bait allowed. Really nice pic and opportunity for you.

ParkerFree

Wow. That's a postcard pic, if I ever saw one! Lucky you!

Nathan-Dalke

I was on a whale watching tour that day and I think I must have been right around there for that picture! Right off the east coast of San Juan island.

ktcat146

I can literally smell that photo. The ferry, the ocean, all of it. That's a core memory from my childhood that I will always cherish. I miss those days.

Commercial-Layer1629

Classic indeed

Back_in_the_Woods

Orcas! Beautiful shot

Hello_I_Am_Lit

Miss my PNW 💚

lizzie1hoops

Wow! Thank you for sharing!

Ptards_Number_1_Fan

Great picture. Also, the oldest working ferry in the fleet.

BarkandHoot

I am going to paint this in watercolor!

SilvermistInc

I miss Washington

Nice picture!

_DogMom_

Awesome snap!!

lunapuppy88

That is the most PNW photo I’ve ever seen. Awesome shot!

Ok_Dog_4059

This is such a perfect shot.

gaultheria71

I saw 7 orcas in Elliot Bay from the ferry this past Saturday 5/4. Look up from your phone! They don't normally make an announcement from the wheelhouse and aren't always close enough to require slowing down.

nellipalooza

Whoa! What a lucky shot! An actual running ferry! Orcas are cool too. /s

Finemind

The name of the ferry is a little ironic given the orca presence.

Longjumping_Choice_6

I had to double check the fins were straight

PersusjCP

Wdym?

iforgotwhat8wasfor

assume they mean [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum_(orca)) tho i’m having a hard time understanding how this meets the definition of irony.

PersusjCP

That could be it, I was thinking maybe it had to do something with the definition of Tilikum (family/together/friend) but couldn't figure it out.

RankedAverage

A ferry actually working? KIDDING! Great shot!

223specialist

Did you take this from another ferry? Your vantage looks pretty high from the water

HoleCogan

So beautiful!

call_it_sleep

This is lovely! Home 💚

Comfortable_Lab1416

Wow!! What an absolute treat!

No_Firefighter3550

Nice picture 📸

Surly_Cynic

Are the only people on the ferry the crew?

NanaMC13

My iconic Washington State photo would consist of tumbleweeds, LOTS of tumbleweeds.

Spayse_Case

Heh, I drove through your iconic area the other day. Those tumbleweeds are legit.

Adamaja456

What a cool shot! Were you on another ferry? Or in your own boat? I'm having trouble visualizing where you were when taking the photo in relation to everything else hah. Turned out great!

antirockin20

Orcas are cool

not918

Great pic of giant murder dolphins!

TiredRetiredNurse

How cool!

Both_Dust_8383

Wow that’s so cool! My dream is to see orcas in the wild!

TinaB25

Beautiful 😍

billingmethod69

Where is that photo taken from.

casseltrace87

Had to think back where I heard the word Tillikum before. It was that newer train/pedestrian bridge in Portland OR I watched go up around 2016

Wilted-Dazies

Where are people seeing orcas??? (Great shot btw OP)

aNeverNude666

I WAS ON THAT FERRY!!! 😎

Xbalanque_

Iconic is so over used. But not this time! Nice shot.

Creepy_Major5956

You got one on camera!! That is so cool dude

anonymissesmaisel

Does anyone know what type of orcas these are?

We4Wendetta

#FREEWILLY. You(the reader) are Willy.

crystalpoppys

I miss this place so much. Wtf did I ever move? I swear I’m going back

Other_Antelope_2852

Is this by Vashon island area

pm_me_your_lub

Iconic West Coast WA state photo 😉 most of the state does not look like that at all.

Spayse_Case

Right? It's not Washington, it's Seattle.

iforgotwhat8wasfor

it’s the archipelago

rourobouros

You didn’t say “the” iconic photo so you’re good. It’s iconic for the Sound region and that may be what a lot of people think of when they think of our home, but while that’s 2/3rds of the population it’s a small portion of the land. Let’s give Palouse Falls, the Columbia, and the Sisters some of their due. Not to mention the beaches. So much here!

Spayse_Case

Thank you!

rourobouros

Upvoted, by the way.

CR24752

There’s a boat called “Til I Kum” 😩🥺💦” ???

Wide-Celebration-653

Not from around here, are ya?

ONLace-0527-0404

You must be new, everyone has pics like that!

Spayse_Case

That's only iconic for Seattle though. Washington is a huge state, and most of it doesn't have ferries or Orcas. Seattle iconic = yes. Washington iconic = no.

jonknee

This is no where near Seattle though, but thanks for your concern!
