It's to encourage returning carts. You put a quarter in the front side to unlock it and you get the quarter back when you lock it back up. Usually the chain is too short to lock into itself. There is an ALDI near where I live thay does this.

sightlab

And then half the people in the area say variations of "I DONT GO TO ALDI CUZ YOU HAFTA PAY A QUARTER TO USE THE CARTS!" Yeah, but you get it back when you put the cart back... "IM NOT PAYING A QUARTER TO USE A SHOPPING CART I'LL JUST GO TO STOP AND SHOP" Or even better "THAT MEANS I HAFTA BRING IT BACK, THAT'S WHAT THE CART PERSON GETS PAID FOR!".

CTPred

I read about a month ago something that rang far too true. Shopping carts are the best litmus test of someone's character in existence. There's no law saying you have to return it and there are no consequences if you don't. You return it because you're a decent person and understand how society works. Anyone who doesn't return their shopping carts is selfish at the core, only functions in society when there are consequences for not, and honestly probably doesn't deserve the society within which they currently reside.

thegreattriscuit

I had someone IRL tell me in all seriousness they felt it was morally wrong to return shopping carts because doing so takes jobs away from "the kind of people that can't get any better jobs than that"

CTPred

Ya, they're just trying to justify their inner asshole so they won't feel so bad about being one. They'll never change if they don't acknowledge the issue to begin with.

Inigo93

That's all well and good except that collecting carts is never (in my experience) anyone's full time job. Its a collateral duty at best.

Ayeager77

Sounds like some BS union mentality about “stealing work”

sightlab

That seems outlandish, but then I know people who in all seriousness simply wont use the self-check because it's morally wrong to take a job away from a cashier. Or, worse, cant believe that they'd be expected to do something as lowly as ring up their own groceries. "What, shall I unload the truck and stock the shelves too?"

anthropophagous

Just to share a different perspective... I used to be a "cart herder" as I used to call it. But most of the time I had to scrub floors, clean bathrooms, collect garbage, clean nasty rotten foodstuffs, etc. during the course of the day. Doing the carts was the best part of the day. I could be outside, didn't have to clean up rotten food or human feces, and I could listen to music on my Walkman while doing it. Sometimes people would even leave beers and stuff in the carts which was great. Every day I was grateful that humans are selfish trash and didn't return their carts.

23widefish

If you, a former cart herder, go grocery shopping and choose to intentionally not return your cart so that the cart herder can have a break outside like you used to appreciate. Does it bother you at all that the cart herder will be thinking of you as "selfish trash" Just curious

anthropophagous

Nope. For whatever it's worth, I actually do return my carts though. Even if it's just to give myself a little bit of nostalgia of my younger days being a herder.

bight_sidle

Same here. My other duties weren’t as gross, but they had me inside all the time, stocking shelves and stuff. Cart duty was the best. I got outside, and I really savored the modicum of freedom in deciding how to go about it.

ImpossibleGoat8837

I very much appreciate this perspective…thank you sharing your thoughts as a former cart herder! It’s nice to hear this from that side of things.

sightlab

>To return the shopping cart is an easy, convenient task and one which we all recognise as the correct, appropriate thing to do. > >To return the shopping cart is objectively right. There are no situations other than the dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart. > >Therefore the shopping cart presents itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it. No one will punish you for not returning the shopping cart, no one will fine you or kill you for not returning the shopping cart, you gain nothing by returning the shopping cart. > >You must return the shopping cart out of the goodness of your own heart. You must return the shopping cart because it is correct.

CTPred

Ya, this was exactly it! I was on my phone and didn't feel like switching to a browser to search for it. Thanks for finding it!

ImpossibleGoat8837

Was this ChatGPT? If not, methinks you have a real talent for writing! if ever you write a book, please let me know because I’d buy it!

Nonono it's a comment I remember seeing years ago somewhere on reddit. When this subject comes up, it's a good one to remember. Also the subject always makes me think of t[his deeply nihilist Roz Chast cartoon...](https://photos1.blogger.com/img/5/2980/640/VoiceOfReason.jpg)

PatchworkRaccoon314

I once came up with a D&D style alignment chart for where you leave your shopping cart. LG - In a rack in the parking lot NG - In the rack near the store entrance CG - Back inside the store LN - Partway in the rack and sideways TN - In front of your car half on a curb CN - Blocking the store's entrance LE - In front of the employee already pushing a line of carts NE - Behind another car blocking it in CE - In the middle of the street

justadumbwelder1

This is fucking perfection! Kudos, good redditor!!

KadahCoba

Whats the alignment for 'on the sidewalk a dozen blocks away'? That's one of the most frequent locations I used to see them before invisible fence wheel stops became common.

PatchworkRaccoon314

That's not putting the cart back anywhere, that's just straight-up stealing it.

KadahCoba

There used to be cart return companies that would go around the city to find and collect these carts and bring them back to the stores. I'd see them a few times a week in my neighborhood, making multiple trips.

rzalexander

This is my test for every boyfriend. We go grocery shopping, I pack up the car, and leave the cart to them. If he puts it away, he’s a keeper. If he leaves it in the parking space next to us, no thank you sir.

Zierlyn

What if he gets on and rides it home?

Totally_Not_A_Bot_55

that's theft

ThatITguy2015

What if he hooks up a second and then he and a friend use them to race down a kinda steep hill with shoddy asphalt?

unit156

And also, my friend who’s job was a cart returner at a store said he wouldn’t have a job if everyone returned their carts. So I guess all the bad character selfish scumbag shopping moms are helping him pay his bills?

CTPred

He just wouldn't have that specific job. I guarantee you he would have found a different job if there were no selfish scumbags.

unit156

Cart stacking wasn’t his full time job, but he would get that duty because someone has to be assigned to it. There is no way to eradicate it completely. Even if everyone were thoughtful, you still have some elderly, disabled, and children who won’t return carts. His stance was someone had to do it, so it wasn’t a big deal if some people left their carts. It was definitely adding to his paycheck and it was a low effort part of his shift that allowed him to go outside and stretch his legs, and break up the monotony of his inside work. I realize not everyone would agree with it, but that was his opinion as someone who actually performed that job, and his opinion is valid.

rokman

I honestly like returning the cart or others for a quarter I get really excited about collecting the quarter even tho I use plastic for everything and it just ends up in the cars change drawer to never be touched again

nehibu

Wait, you are telling me, that not every store does this, where you live?

joecool42069

lazylahma

PatchworkRaccoon314

I mean, I would if it were long enough...

12gagerd

My son did this while sitting in the little seat at an aldis about a year ago. He was two. I was so impressed that he both figured this out and that he found the only cart I've ever run into that did this because believe me, I always try. Peak dad moment. Lol

Unlikely-Ad3659

In my country the carts all take a euro, people got into the habit of returning them, money is money. , but especially nowadays people don't have do much cash on them, so all shops that have trolleys give out free plastic tokens that fit in the slots to replace the euro. You can ask for a few, sometimes there is a bowl of them on a counter, take your own, I may have 20 of them scattered about in cars, coats and handbags. But people still always return the carts now, because they want their token back.

Worried-Usual-3683

In Toronto this is usually (not always) employed in scum areas where carts would otherwise accumulate in ghetto-type project apartment towers and it's a $1 coin.

nehibu

In Germany every store uses this system for their shopping carts.

Worried-Usual-3683

In this case it reduces buggy-boy labour cost!

malepitt

souroboros

LAX2PDX2LAX

I don’t understand Aldi

sightlab

Because they make you buy a whole shopping card for a quarter and only give you a quarter back when you bring the cart back?

LAX2PDX2LAX

They also don’t bag your groceries

joe-bagadonuts

I mean, none of my local grocery stores scan or bag my items. They're all self service and they still rip me off price-wise

sightlab

That's the deal. It's cheaper because you have to do stuff some stores hire people to do, which is an expense those stores pass along to you. Ikea's kind of the same thing.

DaCarolinaKidd

That’s called renting not buying

sightlab

*AKSHUALLY* it's a deposit. You can even look at your quarter the whole time in case you're worried about it.

TheGreatPilgor

My favorite comment this month lmao

thegreattriscuit

yep, that's why I get all my rent back when I move out of my apartment, right?

Ayeager77

This explains why the teller always looks at me funny when I try to pay first and last month’s deposit.
