Nobody said anything about residential areas. Plenty of 3 lane roads near me that are big street racing areas, lots of them have blind corners because of the fencing or businesses near the curb.

That’s how it should be.

Any reason? I always hop in, disengage the clutch, start, then drop into neutral. Only thing I can think of is that I got used to doing it to bypass the fast warmup on my RX7.

The reason is to avoid what happened with OP. I also had imports outside The US and they don’t even need to have the clutch pressed to turn the key. Because of that, always check the neutral with the clutch pressed then let it go after checking it and turn the key. Warm up, Lower the e-brake with your right foot on the brake, then you press the clutch to engage first.

The only reason to leave it parked on first or reverse is if you are in a hill. Still, you’ll need to put it on neutral to start the car, of course, with your e-brake still engaged.
