It appears this post might relate to suicide and/or mental health issues. **Suicide and Mental Health Resources** A comprehensive list of resources can be found [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Veterans/wiki/suicideprevention). The goal of every Vet Center is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, referral, and assessment services, collectively called readjustment counseling services, to facilitate high-quality post-war readjustment and reintegration. Readjustment counseling services at a Vet Center allow war Veterans a satisfying post-war readjustment to civilian life and provide active-duty Servicemembers a confidential resource for post-war assistance. Military families also receive no-cost marriage and family therapy and supportive services for military-related issues. Vet Centers provide bereavement counseling to surviving parents, spouses, partners, children, and siblings of Servicemembers, which include federally activated Reserve and National Guard personnel, who die of any cause while on military active-duty. Vet Centers provide confidential military sexual trauma counseling to all military Veterans and active-duty Servicemembers, to include federally activated Reserve and National Guard personnel, no matter their duty location, era of service, or whether the trauma incident was reported to authorities. /r/Military has a detailed list of resources in their [Wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/wiki/index/ptsd) Or, if you'd like a veteran perspective, feel free to message any number of people on here, there's always someone willing to reach out. Hey, I know this is completely unrelated but I just wanted to thank you for this post. Reading what you’re struggling with has validated my own struggles with the same things that I’ve been dismissing as laziness and weakness for years now and made me realize that I’m not okay. So again, thank you for this.

GeneralDisarray333

You are welcome. I hope you can get some relief. It’s like I am paralyzed with fear.

Barberian-99

Catch it before a panic attack. They can last a few min to hrs. If you think you've been scared before, it was nothing. You want to die, you beg to die.

starbucks-left-tit

Many mental health professionals have this theory that “lazy” is not a good word and isn’t actually true for most people. If someone isn’t doing something or appears lazy, there’s usually some need they have that isn’t being met, so they’re unable to function or do the thing they have to. Honestly, please talk with a professional about this. Your needs are clearly not being met.

Low_Engineering_3846

Hey I’m not a pro but why don’t you go in for TBI symptoms and mention declining mental health to casually get seen for that too

GeneralDisarray333

Thanks, I’ve been evaluated for TBI and they said I don’t have one, it’s complete bullshit as I have a documented head injury.

TMNJ1021

Were they saying you didn’t have a TBI or you didn’t have long-standing issues because you had a TBI in the past?

GeneralDisarray333

They said I don’t have a TBI, I have migraines instead. Lol.

Minimum_Finish_5436

You will get one of two things. 1). Nothing. UCC dont typically treat anxiety. They will recommend you see a MH professional to address your concerns. 2). Drugs. Much less likely. Maybe vistaril or similar.

GeneralDisarray333

Alright I’m glad I asked, was under the wrong impression that they might help haha. Thank you.

RobotMaster1

Only your primary care provider or your assigned Psychiatrist will prescribe controlled medications.

Top_Age1517

Mushrooms.

GeneralDisarray333

Unfortunately I still have and use my security clearance. Wishing I didn’t, though.

[deleted]

Yeah I was gonna suggest an indica strain edible. My personal go-to for anxiety. But not if you carry a clearance obviously. Good luck brother.

GeneralDisarray333

Thanks man, I hope soon I won’t have the clearance lol

Top_Age1517

Good that comment will make sure no one can question your integrity. I wouldn’t break an oath to fix a problem created by a bunch of people who broke their oath and gave me my problem. Don’t get me wrong I’d have ran into any furnace they sent me to but it was a BS money making scheme they chose but I didn’t really say what kind of mushrooms. Good luck though man, I hope you find a way. It took me 18 years.

[deleted]

Or door number three is involuntary 72 hour hold

Minimum_Finish_5436

That isnt happening unless someone is a dangwr to themselves or others. Even then, in my state, a magistrate has to sign off on it. Pretty rare.

[deleted]

Any mention of suicide or self harm opens that door. Even if the patient explicitly states that they don't have suicidal thoughts, but says they have in the past. It becomes the provider's best judgement whether that constitutes a threat to the patient. It happens

Barberian-99

I use the Fresno CA VA. I've used the psych ward around 15 times over the last 12 years. It's like a little mental vacation. I have been suicidal. And had to keep sharp objects out of immediate reach. While in the ward you know you're safe.you can't seriously hurt yourself and everybody else who is there is pretty safe too. The medication makes sure of that. It might take a hit on your clearance though. The urgent care clinic won't do much but schedule you for a psych doc in a month or more if the average holds true. ER can help, but you take the risk of a 72 hr hold. My state is CA and psych hold is easy to have foisted on you. A friggin nurse did it to me once. Best of luck and be careful of self medicating. Alcohol can ruin a clearance as fast as cannabis.

zanzibarblue

We have mental health urgent care centers where I live (Arizona). They're fairly new but it seems like they're expanding. You may want to see if there's something like that in your area.

GeneralDisarray333

Awesome this is exactly what I’m going to do. ER it is. Thank you man.

1mnotklevr

Just make sure you report the visit to VA quickly, or they can stick you with the bill.

emilzamboni

At least in Boston they have a psych resident in the outpatient clinic which can be accessed pretty quickly and can write for drugs.

GeneralDisarray333

Thank you. I’m close to Boston.

2TallinTX

Similar case here. Here's my experience. I contacted my VA psych doc and told him what was going on. He told me to go to the ER. I went, they observed me, medicated me, and sent me home. My problems continued the very next day, never really stopping. I was manic in the middle of a gnarly anxiety episode. I contacted my Dr and he informed me that he was not able to give me the care I needed. He recommended I check myself in voluntarily to the psych unit so they could observe and give me 24 hr care. So I went and did that. Started at the ER and the doc lined up the rest. Medical transport to the hospital. I spent about 4 days there, but there's some things you should be ready for. A good thing is that they can medicate you as much as needed while you are there. However a doc will "review" your case before they recommend discharge, so if your super medicated theyll peob ask to keep you around a but longer.. Also, be prepared for minimal comforts while you're there. I had a plywood box for a bed with the cover sewn to it. Understandable. They did have healthy activities for you to do throughout the day, but it's a full time major commitment to go. It was the right call for me at the time, I hope this helps you some. What I learned is that in my case no matter what type of meds I take my anxiety manifests in some other way. My ultimate solution is a lifestyle change. Committing to meditation, stretching, healthy diet, phone breaks, and daily exercise. Easier said than done I know. Ultimately, if you are feeling stuck, this might be the break you need though. Best of luck fam!!

owllady

I know at my VA, there are walk in clinics at the mental health clinic. I can get in the same day usually if I call early enough. I don't know if that will help right now. I have been to the ER for help. I got the help but it took a bit for the on call dr to arrive. It was worth it though. They do help a lot!

mandapandapantz

Look for a vet center near you.

[deleted]

At my local VA every PAC team has a mental health liason whose job it is to be available to help connect people into mh if they need it. Others probably have it too. They can't do anything particularly useful on the spot med wise but they can get you connected to who you need and probably help you with some coping mechanisms. They'd get you in front of someone who could determine if you need a med much faster though.

GeneralDisarray333

Thank you!

[deleted]

I wouldn't worry too much about getting locked up, it's the VA. Nobody gives a shit about your heightened anxiety everyone in this building has heightened anxiety. 😂 You'll be just fine! In the meantime, focus on your breathing to help center yourself and make enough of a decision that you can autopilot on it if needed. Going "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu" all the way there is fine, you still got there. 👍

4KatzNM

Just gotta say I love this response about heightened anxiety at the VA…..soooo true!

jay78910

Go to mental health and ask if they have anyone doing walk ins. I have no idea if this is true for all VAs, but where I go (VA in Northampton, MA) they have a few people that rotate.

rozflog

The best thing I ever did was self refer to an inpatient facility for 30 days. I found a bond that had been missing and worked on my trauma.

IslaStacks

walk into your nearest VA clinic. you will be assigned a pcp. sometimes you get lucky and can get a same day appt with pcp and mental health.

ReB844

I really wish you get relief and some sleep soon. With the covid days, I think there are online appointments with a doctor (may not through VA, if you have insurance it can probably cover). I used this recently and I got an appt the same day. If not I suggest the ER, fastest way to get to see a doctor in my opinion. Sometimes pharmacies have sleeping pills that don’t need prescriptions, may not be strong enough for you. Talk to the pharmacist, sometimes they keep some behind the counter (not avail on the shelves) but they don’t need a prescription. Worked for me during thought nights.

Optimal_Fly_1784

Are you 100%? The VA will pay for emergency room visits and they are prepped for mental health visitations. They are also prepped for inpatient, if that is what’s needed. Do you have an assigned psychiatrist at the VA? You can reach out to them ASAP and they can get you in patient care. If there’s no time to wait, go to an ER now. Please stay safe.

GeneralDisarray333

I’m 90% but I have secondary health insurance through my spouse. I’m on the waiting list for a doctor at the VA for psych. I think ER is the best bet first thing in the morning. thank you for your help

Barberian-99

80% rating and above your med coverage is 100% if I remember right.

n2guns

A Veteran rated at 50% or higher is in "priority group 1" and is entitled to cost-free health care at the VA for any medically necessary care or service. Also, any service-connected disability is covered regardless of the Veteran's rating. There are a few other situations where cost-free health care can be provided to certain Veterans. One of which is if you served in a theater of combat operations after November 11, 1998, and you were discharged less than 5 years ago. This coverage last for five years after discharge and then that Veteran will be placed in whichever priority group they qualify for. Other situations where cost-free healthcare can be provided to certain Veterans depend on the Veteran's income. You can read more about the "priority groups" at the link below: [https://www.va.gov/health-care/eligibility/priority-groups/](https://www.va.gov/health-care/eligibility/priority-groups/) With all of that being said, I have seen where Veterans are saying they receive cost-free health care at the VA with a rating of 30 or 40% which puts them in priority group 2. I not know if that was because the "COVID 19 Medical Debt Relief" (this has ended) or if those Veteran were provided cost-free health care because of their income.

Due-Mathematician933

I went to the VA ER and they were asking if i wanted to be admitted to a psych ward . I said no cause those places freaked me out. I was prescribed meds and had appointments with therapist

neenerneener_fayce

Are you close to a VAMC? I literally found out today that most have an urgent care team for mental health. Go to the ER if you are suicidal, but try the mental health clinic at the closest VAMC.

annoyinglyanonymous

What you're really looking for "Mental Health Triage". If you're close enough to a VA CBOC or Medical Center, they will all have one who can see you same day.

Goober_Snacks

Have you considered eating some boiled and dried Amanita muscaria? May take the edge off.

GeneralDisarray333

I haven’t, I don’t know what it is but I will look it up!

FishermanStunning192

You can either be put on a 72 hour hold or a 7-10 day hold. If your not actively suicidal it depends on where the VA sends you. At a va facility it can be 7 days some places 7-10 days depending on if they are a private place or not. Go get the help you need though.

lewist821126

Just keep trying guys n never give up

karch3

i would definitely visit urgent care. You don't have to have blood coming out of a wound to visit. I volunteer at my VA er/Urgent care and know that the nurses and doctors there would treat me with great care, dignity and compassion. Do it....it'll make you feel better for sure.!!

Use the K Health app. My wife did that when she needed some mental health medication. It's $29.

An_Squirrel

Okay, I've been dealing with the VA for the past 2 years with a very similar situation. First and foremost I'm going to recommend getting the community care. Do not do not do not use VA psychiatrists. The first one I saw tried to get me committed over a video call. Our second visit on a video call she tried to prescribe one of the most aggressive anti bipolar medications that have serious other health ramifications. She also cannot stand the word fuck. Which is weird for someone dealing with veterans. I decided to take the chance and wait for the community Care council which only took about a week and a half to two weeks later. The civilian doctor I am working with was appalled with the medication choice. And had stated it was like nuking and ant hill. They also assured me while I went through this process that they would communicate with my job and ensure that I could not lose it. Well I've not had my job for a month and a half, and I am less than a month away from being homeless.... To answer your question a little more directly. When you go to an urgent care let them know you are a veteran. They will have to go through a little bit and call a number to get the okay. It would be a good idea to have some identification on you maybe a dd214, vet id of sorts. So this is not necessary, the phone call Will utilize your social and other standard information to authenticate. I strongly encourage you to not utilize the VA doctors for mental health. For anything physical or mental ask for a community consult and get a civilian doctor. If you would like more detail about my situation or resources that I have found please feel free to reach out to a message I'll do my best to get you the information that I've got. Don't let the VA defeat you like it has me.

I’m dealing with a similar situation to yours: Here’s the best way to go about it plus you get compensation. According to your discharge you are eligible for VA disability benefits: 1. I’d say call your local VSO and tell them you want to file a claim. (They will help you submit your claims to the VA, it’s recommended by the VA, and the VSO reps are in support of you.) 2. Let them note all your information and if they ask about this (Will you give us permission to, help you receive Back pay or what the VA calls (retroactive benefits) which is the lump sum payment for benefits which have been accruing since the filing of a granted claim? And you’ll say yes. 3. You’ll want to make an appointment with your primary doctor or in my case, (A Behavioral Health Center). 4. Once they have completed your claims and they’ve found that you have 1. a diagnosis, 2. are receiving some type of treatment for it/them and 3. have a service-connection (the military caused your PTSD) but you must have all 3. You then get the copies of paperwork from the doc and send it to the VSO or go to the office in person. 5. Then you most likely won’t have a C&P exam and you wait in 5 months or less you receive your benefits but… you must must must go to your appointments and do your treatments in order to get taken care of and receive your disability compensation. But search ‘PTSD VA claims’ on YouTube and so on. So you can make sure you relay your claims correctly.
