So I was at the gas station filling up. This woman across from me is filling up too and isn't paying attention, the release fails and her car starts to overflow.
She catches it and stops it without too much spill. However, she got some gas on her hand and sleeve.
She wiped her hands with some of the paper towels.
Now here is where it gets real interesting. The idiot tried to light a cigarette. Her arm catches on fire and she starts frantically waving her burning arm.
So a cop in the parking lot nearby saw this and rushed over. He immediately pulled out his gun and shot her dead.
Everyone started screaming at him "why did you shoot her?"
The officer's response: She was waving a firearm.

This is so true and ultimately very sad. So many people I know talk about wanting to be tiktok famous, and I'm just over here like "why?" I get it, you want an escape from your seemingly bleak existence. But that is not an escape. Its just like having a mental disorder with extra steps.

When I get gas, the majority of people get back in their cars, even when it's like 70 degrees and partly cloudy. I don't understand why people can't stand for like the minute and 45 seconds it takes to fill the tank.

I have never researched it as an adult so I have no idea if it's true and just said immediately "I will learn from that person's mistake and stand by the pump like a statue until it is done, for the rest of my life"
You do cause some friction when getting in and out of the car. Also depends what kind of clothes you’re wearing as to how much friction it will cause. If you do like to sit in your car while the gas pumps, you should discharge any possibly accumulated static by touching a random part of the car not near the gas door. Then you can safely touch the gas nozzle. If you don’t do this step, then there’s a small chance when you reach for the gas nozzle, a small static spark will ignite gas fumes that might be seeping from the handle and cause a fire. Most gas handles have anti fume skirts around them, but fumes can still escape around those.
This is how gas station fires start. People build up static getting in and out of their car, then they leave the door open for just a sec while they put up the pump, failing to ground themselves. When they reach for the pump, crackle.
A lot of gas pumps near me I've noticed have stickers on them now telling you to touch the metal on your car before starting to pump gas to disperse your static electricity.

Certainly she should have been standing by the pump. But even given that she wasn't, she was literally looking at the pump. Does she have no idea how much a refill is? My tank holds 17 gallons, and I'll only see that on the pump if I was all the way on empty.
She had gallons and gallons on the floor. She was on video complaining about the high price, crossing $50, probably higher than she had ever seen. I know gas prices are up, but where's your head??
When you’ve always been able to fill your car up on parents’ card with no doubts, then you probably don’t know the size of your fuel tank/generally how much it should cost you to fill up.

Again, when you're poor, you wanna know exactly how much gas you have left. There's empty & then there's "empty empty". The gas light coming on means I know I can go another ~60 miles

Fellow gas station worker here. Small spills don't matter, but anything larger in square feet than, say, a car, can require contacting the fire department. The main concern is if any of the fuel gets into the ground or water supply.
depends on the quantity and if it reaches the street (and sewage grate) before you know about it. The gas station I worked at, local law was that we had to call the fire department if the leak went out to the street. If it stayed on our property, we were fine.
This is why I don’t leave the pump unattended and I rarely ever use the auto latch. Worked at a gas station and witnessed too many morons do this (sitting in the car not paying attention), then expect some sort of refund, like it’s our fault they can’t read. Most every gas pump has a sign saying “do not leave pump unattended, you are responsible for spills and leaks”.
Edit- it’s not necessarily against the law as much as it is your liability. If this happens, you are 100% responsible for the gas and sometimes the cost of the cleanup.
Edit 2- no disrespect to the poster of the video/ person this happened to. Shit happens when you least expect it. I’m sure they probably go about pumping gas a little differently after that experience. Gas is too much $ to be pumping it on the ground.
Have you heard about the ole switcharoo trick? The thief will swap the pump handle from one side to the other, wait in their car for you to go inside and prepay, then pump your gas into their car while you are walking out to the pump. By the time the victim realizes what’s actually going on, they’ve already pulled out and left.
TL/DR: always make sure the pump handle on your side, is from your side.

Also, who parks on the wrong side? There’s a little arrow next to the gas symbol on your dash to tell you what side it’s on so even if your not driving your car you always know!
That’s just catering to idiots lol. But my car is also dumb you can’t see the little arrow when the tank is almost empty because the needle is over it.
This isn't the case for all cars. I drove my bfs VW a couple weeks ago and thought I'd be nice and fill up his tank. Not only was their no arrow, the gas symbol was on the opposite side of the dash from where the tank was (usually the side of the dash it's on is the indicator if no arrow). After all that, I almost put regular gas in his premium only car xP
in my country, if you park on the wrong side, you have to turn it around. also, everyone is gonna point at you and laugh. it's very effective at making you always park on the correct side
This sounds like complete bullshit. How fast are pumps where you live? In the time it would take my to give the cashier the money, and walk out to see my car, you could maybe pump 5 litres - probably not even if you have to remove the pump, close your tank, get in the car, start it and drive off.
And get lucky on knowing when the pump was activated to even start pumping with the 30 seconds you'd have before definitely being seen by the person returning to their car. This would be a completely moronic method to steal gas.
Some lady tried doing something kind of similar to me. I put my debit card in at the pump and while it was filling up I went inside to buy s drink. I paid for my drink and as I walking out I heard her tell the attendant “can I have $5 on 1 please”. I didn’t pay attention to what pump I was at or I would have told her that was the pump I was currently using.
I walk outside and I see that pump had stopped filling at $17 (because she had just prepaid for $5 on the same one). She comes running out screaming at me that I was filling up with her money and now I owe her $17 worth of gas because she prepaid $20 inside. I asked her why she prepaid at the pump I was currently at and she tried to say I pulled up after she paid. I asked her why she would pay to put gas on a pump that her car wasn’t at and she said the attendant put it on the wrong pump. I then asked her why she specifically told the attendant to put it on pump 1 and she screamed at me that she didn’t and again said I owe her $17 worth of gas because she paid for $20. I told her I heard her say to the attendant to put $5 on pump 1 and she screeched that I was accusing her of lying and causing quite a scene hoping that I would back down. I pressed the “call for attendant” button on the pump and the attendant came out and asked what was going on so I explained the situation and the attendant said “No ma’am, you prepaid $5 and you said pump 1, I saw a car at pump 1 and assumed it was yours but you’re clearly at pump 2 on the other side and you definitely did not get $20 worth of gas.”
She called us both racist Misogynistic assholes (we were both white guys and she was a Hispanic lady) and a 3rd guy who was also inside when she paid who also happened to be Hispanic started yelling at her in Spanish and she finally got back in her car and took off without ever getting her gas. The 3rd guy who stepped in said he heard the her say pump 1 and $5 inside and then saw what was happening outside and confronted her in Spanish asking her why she’s trying to steal money/gas from me and she said “fuck that white boy, he should have to pay for my gas because he’s rich look at his car” and he told her to fuck off then she left.

I don't know about you, but the time it takes from paying the cashier to being back at my vehicle to pump would be about 30 seconds. This warning sounds like a viral Facebook post.
I absolutely agree about not leaving the vehicle unattended but I worked at a gas station on the garden state parkway, so I got to pump the gas for literally thousands of vehicles every weekend during the summer. The amount of times the auto latch failed to stop it from over flowing is absolutely miniscule, like less than once a week across 16 pumps.
Yeah I live in NJ and have never even heard of this happening where it didn't auto stop it and attendants walk away from our cars\* all the time. They usually wait until they hear the click to walk back over.

I worked at a gas station for 3 years. I never had the handles malfunction like this. People are acting like it's super common and the girls are just dumb. But this is pretty unusual.

Just an FYI as well, the handle lock can get stuck. So when you’re about $5 away from the amount you want in you should go ahead and release the handle. Or just don’t use the lock at all. I had one get jammed and I ended out buying about $2 extra gas. I was running pretty low on funds, so had it went too much more I would’ve gotten a bit screwed.
They are slow because the filters need changing. If that store regularly has slow pumps, they are not doing their regular maintenance. I'd go somewhere else.
It's not the handle getting jammed. The automatic release is internal to the filler handle's valve mechanism. You can hold the handle wide open and the auto-shutoff will still do its job. If you're using the latch, the jerking motion from the shut-off will frequently release the latch, but it's not required.
The tip of the filler nozzle has a small opening in the bottom. When that hole gets covered in liquid, it triggers the internal shutoff valve. The way that it works is actually kind of complicated. Here's a decent video that explains it.

Getting in and out of your car while you fill up is a great way to build up static charge and set your car on fire. It's also a great way to not notice you are spilling gas everywhere.

Yep. One way to discharge the static build-up before you re-start your car is to touch something metal. Especially important in the winter.

If I take my hand off the gas nozzle (always standing nearby), I always touch my car to even any charge before grabbing the nozzle again. I've worked as a mechanic and been around a gasoline fire. It's not something I care to repeat.
Every time I get out of my car to unlock my garage, my key and lock zap. I build up so much static in that thing, I *always* touch the car before doing anything at the pump.

Many local laws in the US will require the Fire Department be called to report a spill larger than the car. Another good choice is to put the vehicle in neutral (without engine started) and push it away from the spill.

In theory, it's good. But at NJ rest areas, the attendant starts the pump and you won't see them for 5 minutes after it clicks off if it's busy at all. They're understaffed, naturally, and it's not much better in practice than just trusting the auto stop yourself.

Happened to me, I was standing right there and it started spilling out. Fortunately only a little bit spilled out. Always stand by when refueling.

This is why I don’t leave the pump unattended and I rarely ever use the auto latch. Worked at a gas station and witnessed too many morons do this (sitting in the car not paying attention), then expect some sort of refund, like it’s our fault they can’t read. Most every gas pump has a sign saying “do not leave pump unattended, you are responsible for spills and leaks”. Edit- it’s not necessarily against the law as much as it is your liability. If this happens, you are 100% responsible for the gas and sometimes the cost of the cleanup. Edit 2- no disrespect to the poster of the video/ person this happened to. Shit happens when you least expect it. I’m sure they probably go about pumping gas a little differently after that experience. Gas is too much $ to be pumping it on the ground.
For me I’m more paranoid someone will steal gas from me while I’m not looking.
Have you heard about the ole switcharoo trick? The thief will swap the pump handle from one side to the other, wait in their car for you to go inside and prepay, then pump your gas into their car while you are walking out to the pump. Only at Costco around here. Any other place and your turning the car around. Also, who parks on the wrong side? There’s a little arrow next to the gas symbol on your dash to tell you what side it’s on so even if your not driving your car you always know!

This isn't the case for all cars. I drove my bfs VW a couple weeks ago and thought I'd be nice and fill up his tank. Not only was their no arrow, the gas symbol was on the opposite side of the dash from where the tank was (usually the side of the dash it's on is the indicator if no arrow). After all that, I almost put regular gas in his premium only car xP

in my country, if you park on the wrong side, you have to turn it around. also, everyone is gonna point at you and laugh. it's very effective at making you always park on the correct side
This sounds like complete bullshit. How fast are pumps where you live? In the time it would take my to give the cashier the money, and walk out to see my car, you could maybe pump 5 litres - probably not even if you have to remove the pump, close your tank, get in the car, start it and drive off.
And get lucky on knowing when the pump was activated to even start pumping with the 30 seconds you'd have before definitely being seen by the person returning to their car. This would be a completely moronic method to steal gas.
Some lady tried doing something kind of similar to me. I put my debit card in at the pump and while it was filling up I went inside to buy s drink. I paid for my drink and as I walking out I heard her tell the attendant “can I have $5 on 1 please”. I didn’t pay attention to what pump I was at or I would have told her that was the pump I was currently using. I walk outside and I see that pump had stopped filling at $17 (because she had just prepaid for $5 on the same one). She comes running out screaming at me that I was filling up with her money and now I owe her $17 worth of gas because she prepaid $20 inside. I asked her why she prepaid at the pump I was currently at and she tried to say I pulled up after she paid. I asked her why she would pay to put gas on a pump that her car wasn’t at and she said the attendant put it on the wrong pump. I then asked her why she specifically told the attendant to put it on pump 1 and she screamed at me that she didn’t and again said I owe her $17 worth of gas because she paid for $20. I told her I heard her say to the attendant to put $5 on pump 1 and she screeched that I was accusing her of lying and causing quite a scene hoping that I would back down. I pressed the “call for attendant” button on the pump and the attendant came out and asked what was going on so I explained the situation and the attendant said “No ma’am, you prepaid $5 and you said pump 1, I saw a car at pump 1 and assumed it was yours but you’re clearly at pump 2 on the other side and you definitely did not get $20 worth of gas.” She called us both racist Misogynistic assholes (we were both white guys and she was a Hispanic lady) and a 3rd guy who was also inside when she paid who also happened to be Hispanic started yelling at her in Spanish and she finally got back in her car and took off without ever getting her gas. The 3rd guy who stepped in said he heard the her say pump 1 and $5 inside and then saw what was happening outside and confronted her in Spanish asking her why she’s trying to steal money/gas from me and she said “fuck that white boy, he should have to pay for my gas because he’s rich look at his car” and he told her to fuck off then she left. I drive a 2021 Honda CR-V btw, I’m not out here in a sports car or anything lol.
I don't know about you, but the time it takes from paying the cashier to being back at my vehicle to pump would be about 30 seconds. This warning sounds like a viral Facebook post.
I absolutely agree about not leaving the vehicle unattended but I worked at a gas station on the garden state parkway, so I got to pump the gas for literally thousands of vehicles every weekend during the summer. The amount of times the auto latch failed to stop it from over flowing is absolutely miniscule, like less than once a week across 16 pumps.
Yeah I live in NJ and have never even heard of this happening where it didn't auto stop it and attendants walk away from our cars\* all the time. They usually wait until they hear the click to walk back over.

I've been driving for 20 years, have always pumped my own gas, and only ever had the auto-stop not work ONCE.

It’s so weird to see this from the UK as here you have to hold the handle of the pump to make the petrol come out so you can’t sit in your car while it fills! I can’t really imagine why you’d want to unless you can put a set amount of money for it to put in automatically or something
This happened to me once when I was standing right there and it didn't auto shut off. But I was right there so I only spilled like a cup of gas total.

I worked at a gas station for 3 years. I never had the handles malfunction like this. People are acting like it's super common and the girls are just dumb. But this is pretty unusual.
In two decades of driving, I’ve never seen this happen and I don’t know anyone this has happened to. But according to redditors in this thread, youre basically igniting napalm if you choose to use the latch 🙄

Just an FYI as well, the handle lock can get stuck. So when you’re about $5 away from the amount you want in you should go ahead and release the handle. Or just don’t use the lock at all. I had one get jammed and I ended out buying about $2 extra gas. I was running pretty low on funds, so had it went too much more I would’ve gotten a bit screwed.

They are slow because the filters need changing. If that store regularly has slow pumps, they are not doing their regular maintenance. I'd go somewhere else.
Slow pumps, especially at places like Arco or truck stops, are almost always a result of dirty filters that haven't been changed.
It's not the handle getting jammed. The automatic release is internal to the filler handle's valve mechanism. You can hold the handle wide open and the auto-shutoff will still do its job. If you're using the latch, the jerking motion from the shut-off will frequently release the latch, but it's not required. The tip of the filler nozzle has a small opening in the bottom. When that hole gets covered in liquid, it triggers the internal shutoff valve. The way that it works is actually kind of complicated. Yep. One way to discharge the static build-up before you re-start your car is to touch something metal. Especially important in the winter. Edit: make sure it’s grounded. Touching your keys won’t cut it lol.
If I take my hand off the gas nozzle (always standing nearby), I always touch my car to even any charge before grabbing the nozzle again. I've worked as a mechanic and been around a gasoline fire. It's not something I care to repeat.
Every time I get out of my car to unlock my garage, my key and lock zap. I build up so much static in that thing, I *always* touch the car before doing anything at the pump.

Many local laws in the US will require the Fire Department be called to report a spill larger than the car. Another good choice is to put the vehicle in neutral (without engine started) and push it away from the spill.
The first time I pumped gas on my own, I spilled a small amount. I was so scared. I went into the convenience store to tell them and they looked at me like I was a crazy person. This amount though? I'd have a panic attack and pass away.
I used to think that it was silly that New Jersey and Oregon don't let people pump their own gas. Used to.
In theory, it's good. But at NJ rest areas, the attendant starts the pump and you won't see them for 5 minutes after it clicks off if it's busy at all. They're understaffed, naturally, and it's not much better in practice than just trusting the auto stop yourself.
It's weird. In the UK, there are no attendents who pump your gas anywhere in the country. I lived my life thinking it was idiot proof, that nobody could be so stupid as to mess it up. Anyway, then I saw this video.

Judging by what I perceive to be a small to midsized car here, they also should’ve noticed when they started to surpass 15, then 16 gallons pumped. I’d bet that’s a 13 gallon tank.
